  • Part 3 of our visit to the Maryland and Pennsylvania area focuses on the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad and Monongahela Railroad lines in the Pittsburgh, PA area with a little bit of Union Railroad and CSX action thrown in. Join us as we tour the Pittsburgh area starting up at Conway Yard along the mighty Ohio River. Several iconic locations are included in our footage including shots at CP Penn just north of downtown Pittsburgh as well as Duquesne on the south side. While having only a short time to tour this railfan hotspot, we were able to check many things off our bucket list including rare footage of the Union RR crossing the Monongahela River, a shot of a CSX train pulled by a pair of BNSF pumpkins, and the NS 1069 Virginian Heritage locomotive pulling a hot eastbound intermodal through town. We hope that you enjoy our visit to one of the must see railroad locations in North America where coal is still king and towering bridges dominate the skyline! As always, thanks for making RailfanJunction your destination for railfan videos. Now celebrating 10 years on RUclips!!!!

    Every time I see the Virginian Heritage Unit, I'm hearing the theme music from the '60s TV series "The Virginian".

    The old PRR era signal bridge at CP-Rochester in Rochester, PA has been gone since June of 2019 & I do miss seeing that bridge

      Enjoy! To be honest, it wasn't quite what we were hoping for traffic wise. During a visit 30 years ago by my dad, there were Conrail trains stacked up all the way from Conway to downtown Pittsburgh and Conway Yard was overflowing. Maybe we just hit it on the wrong weekend or overall things just aren't what they used to be. It certainly didn't have the level of traffic that would've warranted a 3 track mainline much less the 4 tracks of years past. But even so, the scenery was unmatched and Pittsburgh definitely is unique in a great way!

      Sadly, no, you were there on a pretty average weekend. Maybe 1-2 trains waiting from leetsdale-pittsburgh. The union railroad catch was very good though.

      That's what we figured and it is a real shame. Industrial railroading in rugged mountain scenery is about as good as it gets but without trains it is hard to make a good video. Sad to think that CSX and NS fought to take control of Conrail yet 20 years later, both seem to have far less traffic than what they inherited :(

      Including with what EHH is doing to CSX nowadays

      The hard part about Pittsburgh was looking around at all of the infrastructure and imagining what it must have been like 50-75 years ago. CP Penn was especially depressing seeing the rotting concrete surrounding the trench and the decrepit bridges. It must have been absolutely fantastic back in the day when the area was in its heyday especially when the pedestrian overpass was still there. Between the bridge at the south end of Conway and CP Penn, I don't think I would've ever gone anywhere else back when it was PRR.

    I'm 64 and this isn't what I saw in the '70s with container trains. But I saw finally if there wasn't Railroad would not exist much anymore. I'll watch any train without a caboose nowadays.

    How do you obtain the train schedule names? such as 'C35', etc...is their a web data base? TY!

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  6 лет назад +1

      The only way we could keep track was to have a radio scanner with us. Whenever trains went through construction areas or were given instructions, they would give their train symbol. Otherwise, it is anyone's guess.

    • @markklinefelter9263
      @markklinefelter9263 6 лет назад +1

      You can then look up the origination/destination of the train by googling NS/CSX train symbols.
