- New BackPack Sprayer? In this video I show you how to take any backpack sprayer and understand how to use it to spray your lawn. in this video, I'm using a My4Sons backpack sprayer but before I go giving out a bunch of Amzon links, I want to use it quite a bit more and make sure it's going to stand up to a bit more punishment from me. So far though, I like it after I had to fix some wiring issues.
Here is part one of "how to use a pump sprayer" series:
• How To STOP Lawn Weeds...
Here is 5oz prodiamine:

Keep in mind, in this video I restricted myself to using the tips that came with the sprayer. In part 3 I'll show you how to flex and that will include a lot more than just the tips! I may even do a part 4 because there is plenty of room to go deep!

Awesome video, Allyn! I happen to be using the brass fan tip as well. Looking forward to the advanced tips video.
Thanks for posting the video. I will be walking sections of my lawn that I have sectioned as zones on paper to calculate my walking pace. Can't wait to see how the aftermarket tips you have work on part 3. I am truly a lawn nut!! Lol
Ay mate splendid this! Arrived home with a new backpack and boom you showing me how to work it! Thanks again for this! Bravo mate!
Can't thank you enough for this video. I purchased a backpack sprayer and attempted to put down prodiamine yesterday. I was getting so frustrated that i packed it back up and set up the return to send it back.. I found this video the next morning and by 2:30 in the afternoon had sprayed my yard and my parents. Thanks!
Terrific video bro! Really made it simple and appealing!
As always a very informative video. Thanks.
Great presentation on understanding your sprayer, and how to benefit the most from it. You should have used Arnold's phrase "Pump you up". That looked like a workout too. Fit lawn for a fit LCNer!!! Thanks Allyn!
Appreciate your videos and all the tips you offer! I recently purchased a My4Sons sprayer myself. With the brass tip at 60 PSI i'm getting about 1 gallon every 2 minutes and 48 seconds. When calibrating my walking pace to the sprayer I found a free metronome app keeps me on track! At the current rate of my sprayer, 65 BPM works well for my stride (taking one step per beat).
Superb video! Very informative
I used a backpack sprayer for the first time yesterday and now my thighs and back are sore lol. Got my workout and lawn work done at once! I used the Hydretain off of your site for my first application -- we'll see how it works :)
Thanks Mr. Hane for helping me tremendously understanding my own M4S sprayer even better. Till I can walk better, I’ll use the variable pressure at maybe half pressure or even less.
sounds good! I will do a lot more with this sprayer in the next couple vids too.
Having walking issues is the pits. I've got spinal compression that limits what I can do... which as you know, makes being an LCN very difficult.
Your timing is impeccable. I just got my My4sons (gold model) sprayer. I used it to spot spray my winter weeds. You have saved me time playing with the nozzles. Next week I will put down the granular Protamine. Mine came with the spray gun which might produce a higher PSI. I think I have an adapter that will fit my pressure washer nozzles. So I will try those and see. And yes I went out and bought a scale.
Do you get 30 sec per quart at 60 psi, I’m getting one minute ?
You Nailed the "half way Mark" (2 gals. left)as Bobby Darin use to say!!!!!
Thanks for the tip tips!
love the video as always. Allyn- you NEED to review the new Honda HRN216 pushmower... just a BEAST and only $400! Bags a TON of grass due to double cut blade system/bag fills tight and a new 170 CC motor has GREAT power! Love mine, but need a REAL professional review
Thank you! Lots of good info!
Get part 3 up already! haha! Great work Allyn. I recently purchased the My4Sons sprayer and used it for a Dismiss application with a Teejet nozzle. Absolutely a dream to run. Love the fact I no longer have to pump to keep the pressure regulated. Looking forward to your nozzle recommendations.
Irodom, what TeeJet nozzle are you using, and how are you connecting it? My4Sons has a metric connection, and I thought that all of the TeeJets were standard.
@@fredcurrier5912 the nozzle drops straight into the my4sons threaded collar. I used a flat washer and an o-ring on top of the nozzle to make a good seal. So far, it's been working with no issues. I do need to update the nozzle though. My current one's volume per minute is too low for my liking. It takes me roughly 20-25 minutes to spray through 4 gallons. I'd like to get down closer to 10 minutes for that volume.
@@lrodom I had a feeling that it might fit into the collar... and what I was hoping. Which specific nozzle are you using? I'm thinking of 1 of the reds, which should put out around .91gal over 1Ksf at 40PSI and 1.0gal at 50PSI, both walking at a 3MPH pace. Not sure of how wide the spray pattern will be yet though.
Al loves that Millenial Farmer Hat 👍
Great video!
I have the same sprayer and have no complaints. Battery lasts forever on it also
I like that sprayer. I really need to get a battery powered one. Thanks Allyn! 👊
I like it so far - will do a full review in a month or so once I beat it up some more
@@Thelawncarenut beat it! 😬🤣
Love the M4S. I use the pink one as a "fogger" when I spray my insecticides.
What PSI are you using with the pink "fogger" for the insecticide applications?
@@ericsandman4508 I keep it on the max (65 psi)
First! - Nice videoMr. Hayne!
@LCN Where’s part 3 with the aftermarket tips?
Great info!
Did you ever do a video on the aftermarket tips?
I knew when you said you left room in the sprayer RGS was coming out to play!!!!!!
I have had the M4S sprayer for 2 years now and the variable pump is nice. The tank seal at top failed right away. I wish I had bought another as the wands and threads on it are not standard so you are stuck with the cheap fittings and adapters they sent with it even after paying for the upgraded sprayer fitting kit. To use other sprayer tips I would have to rebuild the hose. It just felt like the different tips seemed cheap. I call them the Tonka spraying kit. I stopped using it for lawn spraying and only use it now with the adjustable tip and Pest Control.
Great video.
Hey Allyn I know I'm late asking this question I received a shipment of the Prodiamine from you guys have A quick question once I spray it on my lawn do I need to water it in? I Appreciate all of your knowledge and helping us Diy guys out been A follower A few years thanks!
Very interesting... thanks for sharing.
thanks for watching MD. 👊
I have for those prayers they are the best on the market I spray eight hours a day and still going strong battery is awesome I charge it at night
"I wanna be REALLY accurate. Ok that's about 31.9 secs, so we'll call that 32 secs" You got me bro 😂 5:12
I just got a M4S backpack sprayer this summer. Thanks for doing the hard work for me😂
you're welcome!
Justin, you're still going to have to find out how much is left when the liquid is sloshing around too much for the pump to prime anymore. For me, it was about 14oz... so I added 14oz above the 1 gallon/K so that I had even pressure throughout... and slowed to a crawl to get that last bit out.
Very nice sprayer and great video thanks alot
thanks VP!
No thank you brother
Allyn, you "said" at the end that the brass fan tip that you used was best for weed control. I presume that's due to droplet size? Pre-emergent weed control and soil apps (large drops), or post-emergent needing smaller drops? Yesterday, I used my sprayer and the tip that you used for the first time, to spray RGS and Humic. I'm REALLY looking forward to the 3rd installment, especially since the wand connection is metric and most TeeJets that I've looked at are not.
I haven’t been able to find the part 3 where you discuss the different types of aftermarket tips you recommend. What’s that video called? Thanks so much!
When is the ADVANCED TIPS video coming out?
@thelawncarenut where can I find Part 3? Need to see what aftermarket tips are available
Hey Allyn, did you ever review that green works mower?!
Hi Allen, where did you buy the telescoping wand you are using? Thanks for the great content / teachings you provide…
It comes with the My4sons sprayer. A little late but it might help someone in the future
What happened to the tips to use on the sprayer video
Help! I'm confused. I'm trying to figure out how long it takes to walk an area of 1000sqft. To get my sqft area measurement don't I need to know (or measure my spray width output of the nozzle I'm using) swath area? It will take less time to walk 1000 sqft if my swath is 5', 6', 7' vs 1', 2' 3' swath. Or did you mention to measure the swath area and I just missed it?
I have but Bahia and Saint Augustine mix grass, how do I treat that for pre- or post emergent or for any type of weed killer?
Is there a reason why you chose M4S electric over a Flowzone? SiteOne has Flowzone for sale and you can swap the tip for a Chemlawn gun. The psi can get you 1.5 gal/1 min/1000sqft with a better spray (bigger droplets) pattern out of the gun.
General question from a brand new NUT
I am not sure if I overlap spray patterns like you describe so I’m using the Approved blue dye to mark the spray pattern. Does this affect the product effectiveness . I also use it to spot treat.
I am literally. Just starting out to be a NUT.
After using for a year, do you recommend this backpack sprayer or is there a different one you recommend? Thanks in advance. I just purchased your digital lawn care programs for cool and warm grass.
Looking for a sprayer wand/tip that won’t leak! Having a hard time finding it. Any help?
Allyn, is there a reason you use the Teejet Turbo Floodjet vs Teejet Turbo Teejet Induction. Looking at the Teejet chart for the droplet size: the Turbo Floodjet doesn't put out the UC (Ultra Coarse) droplet size for pressure greater than 30-40psi depending which one we looking at. For backpack sprayer, it usually has 40psi or greater which means we wouldnt get the UC (Ultra Coarse) droplet size. The Turbo Teejet Induction indicate we can still get UC droplet size at 60psi.
Can you let me know some of your thoughts on this please? Thanks
Hey what did you think of that two blade greenworks walk behind mower I spotted in the background?
Nice Hat!
First time I used my new battery operated sprayer The battery ran out. 3/4 thru application post emergent application. Never thought the battery would not make it
Depending on what that tip is rated for you could get more gpm at a lower PSI. going beyond the psi rating for a tip produces a finer mist which can lead to fewer gpm. in short more PSI doesn't always mean more gpm.
Where’s part 3?
Still waitijg
Would like to see you review GCI Turf spray nozzles with this sprayer. Pete claims you can get an eight foot wide spray from the spray tips he sells. Thanks for the sprayer review and tips on how to use. On a side note, would be good to show your viewers how you determine how wide a spray pattern each tip provides. This will help in knowing the space between each row you spray. Thanks again.
Add Lazer to any of your mixs and measure/determine from there. Since you are "throwing it down" already 🍻💪.
His stuff is all confidential/proprietary to what he does You'll want to ask him about tutorials on them but for me, I'm just using off the shelf stuff.
By the way.....Blues Brothers Briefcase full of Blues is Prime Mowing Album!!!! But your straight lines might go crooked because you want to dance like Belushi while mowing or spraying!!!!!
Can you tell me what wand you have please? Love your videos
I live in Cherry Valley, IL near Rockford. I bought my house a year ago a d I hired Tru agreen to do the 1st year of fertilizing and weed control. They are charging me 150 an application and not real happy for what I am paying, so I am going to try doing myself. I wanted to know what the best towable sprayer to get. I lot is totally flat. I also wanted to know what it the best way to mix it sjnce it will be a tank? Thanks
I like the M4S sprayer, but found all tips useless except the brass fan. Also, the gallon marks on mine were not correct so I measured out 1 gallon at a time and made new marks, may want to check yours also.
Someone else said that too. I'll def check on that.
Gotta ask...Because your gallon per minute is so low...could you double your product per gallon and still put your a$$ into it? Keeping you from walking the lawn twice. Thoughts?
Thanks for your help LCN...big fan in Denver, NC!
Where did you get the metal extendable wand that you are using in this video?
What width of spray do you use to determining number of passes to cover your 1000 sq ft?
Cleetus! Haha! Let that sprayer “bog deep,” Allyn.....😜
doin' it for Dale!
The pink commando 450 looks great for fogging plants with insecticide..
Yes it does. A nice mist.
I bought this sprayer Nov. 2020. But now there doesn't seem to be any follow up videos. Did you change your mind about these backpack sprayers?
Where can I find part 3 of learning to spray lawns?
What tip and drop size do you recommend for post emergents? Trying to get rid of Bent grass using Tenacity. Ive been using a blue Turbo Flood Jet at 30 psi. I think I may be appying too large a droplet?
Bump. I'd also appreciate an answer being posted to @Erik's question above.
How many inches to mow your lawn is it 3 inch, 3.5 inches or 4 inches
Hahahaha at 8:51 that's the most gangster shot
Is there any chance of anyone making a pre-emergent for nuts edge or something like a post-emergent that will kill it and not come back the following year
I am debating a battery pump sprayer this past week. I was thinking to go to the local hard despot to get me one of them der dinkum ryobi backpack sprayers to have for my next app of trimac in a few weeks. I been bogging deep up here in the lawn. Look forward to your next video about the "tips".
From what I've read, the straps on the RYOBI aren't that comfortable. The ones on the My4Sons are like luxury seats on a private jet.
Need some products. But no shiping to Puerto Rico. Help me out ! Pls
I too have begun a journey down the rabbit hole for nozzle tips, what am I doing with my life
Genius
The engineer in me is compelled to comment: measuring a full gallon once will be more precise than averaging 3 separate quarts. Assuming similar measurement error for both time and volume under each condition, a single, larger spray will be closer. Of course, averaging 3 one gallon sprays would be even better.
good thing we are only caring for grass and not building bridges 😂
@@Thelawncarenut and not high value crops! This is what we did at the pine seedling nursery I used to work at. average of 3 full 300 gallon tanks over a known number of acres.
I use a metronome app on my phone to keep my pace lol.
I live in Riverview Fl. When is the best time to put down preemergents?
Here you go drive.google.com/file/d/1FIEWJweUc72LXWVF_GQMQYyCf9oLFDzC/view?usp=drivesdk
First Aussie 😁
I know it’s a spray video but can we throw granulated in this heat? Thanks....
sure, go for it
Hey there LCN! Great video! Just what I needed, but I’ve got admit I’m a little disappointed. See I came looking for you because I knew as analy precise as you are you’d be the one that would do the gum bucket test by weight. “Lemme see, a gallon of water weighs 7.62 pounds, but you don’t have to spray a gallon. You could do a quart, but I wouldn’t because diving 7.62 pound would carry you tree places and you’d have to round up, so let’s do 1/2 pound out 2 places. Now just put you bucket on the scale, TARE it out to 0 and start spraying to 3.81 pounds. Bada bing!” 😂😉 Love ya and once again walked away learned!!
That first brass “fan tip” you used is actually a deflector tip.
good to know - it worked really well. I like the pattern it makes.
The Lawn Care Nut
We use those here in the U.K. for lawns, I use the green one, sometimes the blue, if you hold the wand about 1/2 meter high it will spray a metre wide swath.
A basic two speed pump is going to be better for most people and easier to calibrate. With that variable speed knob, you are never going to get the same exact speed/pressure every time -- unless you want to re calibrate before every spray job.
Agreed. That is why I just used the max.
"This N-Ext step is optional". Nice pun @11:37
Many of us get weeds in our flowerbeds. Is there a reason you don’t spray prodiamine in there?
The yellow can stain. Use preen or snapshot.
Where is part 3 with the aftermarket tips?
question: being blind, I can't exactly see how he is spreying. I know its a fan tip and I understand that, and keep the tip near knee height. But does he move the tip from side to side as he walks, or is the fan tip wide enough that he just holds it still both in vertical and horizontal
He does not move it side to side. Keeps it pretty still vertical and horizontal
Where is the 3rd video ?
You should try Pete’s backpack sprayer he uses.
he keeps his nozzle assembly to himself - doesn't want it out on the public so I respect that wish of his.
I’ll stick to my Milwaukee tank sprayer 🤣🤣
Where is Part 3?
Turn it up to ludicrous power!
It'll go plaid!
Why should we never submerge our hose into the tank? Did she that too?
because you will get the chems on it and then you'll touch that with bare hands later. Also, there is a small chance backflow can get up into the hose.
have you tried pete’s from gci turfs spray nozzles?
I have not - but I know he has some really smart setups.
I've used Pete's sprayer nozzle assembly on my Sprayer's Plus BPS for the last year with great results. Had a few hiccups in the learning curve, but been happy with results.
You should try Pete’s foam weed killer.
It’s a clutch tool.
Jeff Poplin i have the strom sprayer with his nozzle sprayer and cannot complain.
Chopper Style i will have to try it out. going to be trying his tall fescue this yr so excited to see the results
So are we going to see LCN and Goonzquad do some videos?
ha ha, I'm all out of free lawns this year, sponsors all tapped out 😂
Just the tip.
That's what she said.
Cleetus shirt
Imodium Ad can help you with that leaky valve problem 😳💩🤔🙄😜🤣😂🤣
Does this mean end of the Ortho Dial n Spray
just giving some fresh options. ✌
@@Thelawncarenut Speaking of the Ortho vs the My4Sons, GreenPunch is not recommended with a backpack due to needing a 20:1 ratio. Can you just use 6oz/gal to get that ratio? That's the same ration as 6oz of RGS per gallon, ain't it???
Allyn, What do you suggest for larger lawns?? I have close to an acre. Been looking at the pull behinds...
I have a 25 gallon pull behind sprayer from Agrifab. Works awesome
😎✌️💪
