- Are you planning on Leveling your Lawn? Watch this first.
In this video I cover 7 common mistakes beginners make when leveling their lawns. This is not a how to level lawn lawn video but more of a what not to do when leveling your lawn video.
The secret to a perfect looking lawn is having it LEVEL.
Is your entire lawn or areas of the lawn filled with dips, ruts, low spots, and high spots? When your lawn isn’t level it can lose its once-pristine look, and lead to damage and accidents due to the craters making you twist your ankles and scalp your lawn with your mower. Good thing is, you can level your lawn yourself with your own leveling materials such as sand vs soil .
A level lawn also leads to a healthier and easier to maintain lawn. Not only does it result in a better quality cut, because your mower won’t scalp the lawn. Not to mention, mowing over a bumpy surface is uncomfortable. Low spots are of particular concern because as the tires pass over them, the level of the mower blade also drops, plunging it into the higher spots and cutting the grass too low in that spot. The last advantage to a level lawn is drainage. Holes and low spots tend to collect water in pools, which increases chance of lawn fungus.
Basic equipment needed to level your lawn: lawn leveling rake or lawn leveler or lawn lute or lawn level drag or any other kind of lawn level tool . Also you will definitely need a gorilla cart to haul around the thousands of pounds of material. The most important tool is the lawn leveling rake, I will link below for the one I used for my lawn. This rake is used by golf courses to level their courses. It removes stones, breaks up small clumps, and creates a super smooth surface. It does a much better job at final leveling than just a landscape rake or push broom.

I have been in the landscape industry for over 30 years. And this guy is the best description of how it’s done. This is how you do it. I can not begin to tell you how many homeowners argue with me the second I say the best method is with a fine sand. Many people think I have no idea what I’m doing as soon as I say sand. Sand also gives your lawn better drainage. If your concern about nutrients add compost after it is level. A thin layer it will break down and feed the lawn.
I have never heard of that before ( but I wouldn't argue with a pro, either). LOL
Fantastic video. My lawn is currently bumpier than a convention of turtles.
Same here. I’m the second owner of a house that is just over 2 years old. The soil is hard clay and doesn’t appear to have had much in way of top soil put down. This year was just prepping the soil for grass. My lawn is essentially a decent front yard where they sodded. The rest was a mess of weeds and garbage crab grass that I’ve slowly been weeding out. Next season will be the start of the leveling process.
Mine too... Bocce Ball is alot more fun this way - I know from experience🤣👍
Damn moles!!!
4 large dogs and 3 kids over 20 years... What's level????
Ditto!
You speak to the camera like you're speaking to a friend. It comes across so naturally and easy to understand. Great work - I've subscribed.
Yeah. I think George could have his own TV show
What d'you think George 👍
@@07BLUESTORM Thanks dude! id say sure but i dont even watch tv anymore 😂😂😂
only youtube these days:)
I agree! Just subscribed too.
“I’m guessing most of y’all have between 6k-10k sqft”
Me standing on my 600sqft patch, haha
haha no worries my friend, mine is not much bigger 😂
you should check out this video where i show you how to use bags of sand and soil from home depot to level, its perfect for a small lawn like yours: ruclips.net/video/gNhTNiLDyzA/видео.html
I'm on the opposite spectrum sitting at 20K or so. Which sounds like i need like 60 tons....way too much for me.
I have a big yard🤦🏾♂️
Pretty sure I would have made most of these mistakes. One of the better lawn care videos that I've seen without any clickbait whatsoever. Thank you!
Glad to help, lots of time and headache packed into this video, good luck with your project!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare
Hey man thanks for the vid
I have a question! I would want to overseed after leveling correct?
Also the soil/sand mixture should be bone dry so Im assuming the yard should be bone dry as well ?
we have been getting lots of rain lately but wanted to level this weekend unless its too late in the season??
@@travisskyski Yes you will want both to be bone dry, no wetness at all
I definitely would have made the mistake of using the bag straight from Home Depot.
This video is a gem...Thank you brother...
Wow dude I watched 10+ videos on lawn leveling last year and I got all my questions answered in this one video from you....Thanks
Awesome dude, thats great to hear! glad to help
The guy is instantly likable and not pretentious. I really enjoyed his tips and look forward to doing this to my yard.
You come across as a really nice guy and you deliver some real pearls of wisdom in an easy way - thank you George 👍🏻
Thanks Tim! That’s really nice of you to say!
Much appreciated buddy:)
@@George-pu5oi I think you’ve replied to the wrong person - I think you’re brilliant and definitely didn’t see any brown patches.
@@timhickman3407 Thank you Buddy
I went to an Ag & Tech college, a dorm friend (Ag Major) called me out when I mentioned that he worked with dirt. He said, "All plants live in soil. Dirt is what you find under your bed."
Smart man!
Have been putting of levelling my grass for last couple of years as I always get overwhelmed just before I start. I have gone thru countless videos and you by far hit it out of the park. Great explanations and encouragement thank you so very much!!!
Great to hear! thank you very much, good luck w your project!
I kinda brushed off your channel at first glance. But wow man was I wrong. Very well done. Full of info and well spoken.
Haha thanks Dan much appreciated
I cannot say enough just how much how I appreciate this video! I have been trying for days to find one that tells me what I need to know without all the "blah blah blah!" I hate the way many do theirs with repetitions and BS. Like, please just get to the point! I do have ADHD but I also have zero desire to hear nonsense when I have a million other things to do. You are perfect at this!! Thank you!!!
Nice to see a genuinely nice person doing one of these clips. Excellent presentation style and clearly explained. Plus, it's actually something people can do without being an expert. Nice job with this
Thanks dan, really appreciate that:)
im no expert but learned a few things over the years and am happy to share my experiences.
Thanks for tunin in:)
I agree totally! I just watched two of his videos in a row and they were both excellent. George is very personable and seems to know what he's talking about without coming across as arrogant. Genuinely wants to help. Also lots of his thumbnails are humorous!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare, at what point do you scalp the yard?
1. Do you scalp a week before as you put the fast acting Nitrogen fertilizer or
2. Do you scalp right before you put the sand/soil down to level?
Every time I mow I wish I could just steamroll over my bumpy lawn. Then every time I do research on lawn leveling I get excited to do it, but it's just sooooo much material to spread! I will do it one day, and you are helping me prepare for success. Thank you.
No problem good luck, these are all the "bumps" in the road i ran into so im glad it can some you guys out
Thanks George, your lawn videos are always informative and encouraging.
ahhhh dry out the soil completely that's genius. i used soil a couple years ago and could not understand why it was just burying my grass. now i know, thanks man
George, love how you own your mistakes and talk about them. My wife just points at me and says “you know “ when the mother in law asks what’s wrong.
lol thanks! no shame in this game!
this guy is off his lawn
I still have 3 minutes left of this video but I have to stop to comment already. Phenomenal job on this video! So helpful and informative, but also it all makes sooo much sense! Thank you!
No problem MT much appreciated!
We are looking at doing this, good tips. Cheers.
Going back into the archives for your vids George! Planning to level this summer, thanks for your tips.
This was a superb tutorial on how to level a lawn. I’ve watched a number on this subject and yours was by far the most helpful: thorough yet concise, and super easy to follow. You’ve got a new subscriber.
George..great video man, I am glad I found your channel.
Really liked how genuine you seem when explaining the do’s and don’t of leveling. Pretty sure I would have mad half those mistakes. I am looking to level part of my lawn this season. I live in Arizona and have Bermuda
I gladly hit that “like” and “subscribe”
✌🏼
Thanks Wookiee much appreciated 😊
Glad to share my mishaps with ya!
It’s nice you have Bermuda! That stuff can recover from anything!
Good luck w your project:)
Appreciate the like and sub😀
The fact that you put your self in the category of someone who has made this mistake, gets the thumbs up and props. Nice one.
Thanks! no shame in this game my friend
Thank you!
I’ve been researching this topic for months now...best video I’ve seen! Thank you!
Thank you meister! That is the best comment I’ve heard ☺️
This video is underrated! This is great!
Thanks clay, appreciate you watching:)
Best video I’ve seen on leveling so far.
Great work man, nice presentation
appreciate that sir!
Thanks for the tips George. I’m getting ready for sand leveling in a week.
Awesome pat! Good luck w your project 👍
How did you know I needed this? I didn't know this was an idea on RUclips was trying to figure it out on my own. Thanks
I can read your mind 😂😂😂
Hard to argue with that. Great video, George! Killin' it man!
Thanks man! Like wise!
I always seem to learn something from every vid. Love it!
Awesome! Glad to hear that! Appreciate you watchin!
Out of all the Lawn RUclipss, you're my favorite.
You the man D!
Well George, I've gotta tell ya, I absolutely loved loved loved this video.
I take self accountability seriously. You didn't just say, "this is the way to do it I'm a pro" like most people would have. Instead, you owned your mistakes and we all learned from them, not just you. Then gave us solutions. That's the ticket to growth! God damn I love your style.
Subbed, keep up the good work and EXQUISITE teaching method.
Jared, after almost 700k views on this video.. that is the most thoughtful comment i've received.
Thank you for making my day!
Gorgie !!!!! This is a blueprint to success.
No shame in the game - thanks for sharing your experiences. Always a fan of your great videos... 👍
Gio! Thanks dude, I tried to compile all the little things that ppl don’t talk about often that can really throw a wrench in your project.
Appreciate you watching!
Glad to find a channel from the area where I live! Awesome videos! Thank you!
Hey neighbor, nice to connect with you! appreciate the kind words:)
I love those Hardy gloves! They protect your hands as well as the fancy expensive brands, you can actually feel what you're doing, and you don't feel terrible if they get torn up because they didn't cost a fortune.
I'm happy with my "not so hidden valley"... My lawnmower blade is my yard leveler, as it slices through the tall lumps and distributes them around the yard, while the rain washes them into all the low valleys. :)
Lmao that sounds like a solid process!
Although, i doubt you'd be here if that was the case 😊
Gonna be starting my own lawn business here soon so this definitely helped
Awesome! good luck w your business endeavors!
I needed this video so badly before making all the mistakes. Now, onto leveling my lumpy lawn!
Nice work George!
Great content George! I have an area close to the house that has been punished with shallow roots from a river birch tree. Will be trying to build up that 200 sq feet over time since the remainder of the lawn is relatively level.
Thanks jayme! Those darn trees, I’m suffering the same issue right in the middle of my lawn 😒
But I cant get rid of it because it’s the only red tree on the block lol
EXCELLENT video George. This video should be Leveling 101 for everyone thinking about or doing a leveling project. Good job!
Thanks Brian! Lots of mistakes and headaches packed into this video 😂
All great info brother, got my attention. I need a great lawn!
This is the first video of yours I've watched. Absolutely brilliant video! New subscriber, looking forward to watching more!
Thanks a lot Emily!
Appreciate the sub 😊
George seems like a good dude. Video has good vibes.
Thanks john, i appreciate that buddy
Thanks for making these videos. All your info was clear and concise, and now I'm armed with enough knowledge to make some mistakes of my own. Really though, this and your other lawn levelling video are what I needed to know where to begin. Thanks!
No problem peter good luck w your project!
Glad I found you. Was trying to figure it out on my own. Thank you for sharing.
No problem, lots of headache packed into this video:)
thanks for watching!
Thanks man, good content. To the point. Has helped out a lot.

Great content George and as always amazing production on the video 👌🏾
Thanks cam! Much appreciated sir!
Never knew that about the sand that is definitely good to know
Thanks man! Had to learn that one the hard way
Great job as always!
Thanks blank man!
Thank you for this video. I look forward to getting started.
No problem, good luck!
Only lawn guy on RUclips that has worn out NEWBIES on his feet....those shoes have forgotten more than I’ll ever learn. Sir Take my sub/thumbs up. Glad I found your page!
Once you go new balance, there’s no goin back.
Appreciate the sub/thumb 😊
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I'm a Jordan guy but American made New Balances are the best I have a pair of solid burgundy 574 and they are great not only look good but they feel great I just don't like the color combinations New Balance comes up with I usually get solid colors and you won't catch me wearing a pair of solid white ones not a grandfather yet and those are the only shoes that would hold up when I was 265 lb going to the gym and powerlifting I would wreck all my shoes but the new balances always held up they are definitely the best quality sneaker you can buy those an italian-made diadoras but a lot of people don't know Diadora here in the states
Let’s see, mistakes I made last year: 1.) Went with the wrong grit size 2.) Didn’t prefertilize the lawn 3.) Didn’t allow the sand to fully dry 4.) Did not use enough sand (which might have been a blessing) 5.)WRONG TIME OF THE YEAR (applied too late as my lawn was heading into winter dormancy). Also, didn’t have a levelawn, just used garden broom and rake. This year I will do better! Great short reference video!
Thanks dude:)
dont worry, your not the only one.. as long as we learn from our mistakes, the lawn will just keep getting better.
Thanks for sharing, everyone reading this- make sure NOT to do these things
Anybody can make mistrakes.
Thank you for sharing this fella, very useful ❤
No problem! Thanks for watching?!
Awesome videos as usual George! One question, how often can you level at the rate of 0.5" during the growing season provided I have the material and time to do it? Or is it 0.5" or so no more than twice a growing season?
Great video! I've watched a few on leveling and yours was the most informative. Thanks for making it!
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your project!
My lawn was sodded 18 months ago and this will be the first growing season I can start top leveling. Glad I saw this video in my feed because you answered most of the questions I had been wondering about. Thanks for sharing your tips..... I can’t wait to get started!
Awesome! Good luck w your project!
Thanks for the great info. Leveling my yard for the first time this season and I'm trying to do it right the first time.
Go Cubs! Appreciate the I formation and since moving to Texas, I love hearing the Chicago accent! I need an Italian beef and Honkers Ale now.
Oh man that sounds good right about now!
perfect ending to a long day of leveling!
Thanks for watching:)
Thank you so much for the tips on the garden cart and sand size. Adam and I are just about to do our small lawn in our new place in a few months those two tips will save our backs and our mower. Subbed!
No problem!
And sweet! Just returned the favor! Look forward to checking out your content:)
Good stuff George. I'm leveling my lawn towards the end of May this year. I'm mostly concentrating on really deep spots this year. I think next year is when I'll go for the whole yard. I'm sitting around 7k sq ft. Tons and tons.
Thanks mat!
You got quite a project ahead of you!
Take your time, youll get better results
Appreciate you stoppin by:)
Thank you George, I'm old school so I took Notes!
That was an awesome video! Thank you for sharing all of this info.
Thanks man, had to learn the hard way with all of these. Hopefully I can help some people avoid my mistakes lol
I love the Chicago accent, brother! Keep up the good work. Go Cubies!!
Lol thanks Matt😊
Great video! Thank you. I'm starting the leveling process this year. It's going to take several years since my entire lot is sloped front to back. I need to do a little terracing along with to even be able to level! Also low spots in a slow draining lawn can be mosquito breeding areas. I found that out last year when we had rain, rain, rain. BTW, it's in red clay soil.
Thanks glena! much appreciated! if you want to help your drainage issues, aerorate your lawn and THEN level your lawn with sand. When those holes in your clay soil get filled with sand, you will notice a huge difference in drainage. Good luck!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Great idea. I need to watch a couple videos on that to get the best plan ironed out. Thanks much!
Very informative video and well presented. Looking forward to more tips and advice I can use on my own lawn.
Well done George, you're easy to listen to! And the info is great.
Great video George. Nice edit.
Thanks Ron! Likewise man, enjoyed your new video!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thanks sir.
Great info George, will store it in the memory bank for next season. I like your videos more than alot of other content providers because you give out alot of information as opposed to alot of filler. Keep them coming and thankyou!
Awesome, thank you! My goal is to deliver more content then fluff although i occasionally like to have a bit of fun too lol
appreciate the nice words:)
Definitely saving this video for when I need to level - most interesting thing I learned was the growth push with the Scott’s prior to the leveling. Cool clip!
Quite enlightening video George!!🙏

What kind of ratio do you recommend when you first start of sand and soil?
@@ernestpmiller 50:50
@Durham Reality my advice is to you... dont ever underestimate some one with a small figure
Or 50/50 wilko hard wearing rye grass with bunker sand. (Not the sand hitler used though ok).
I've gotten more out of this video than any of the others. Thanks for making mistakes to save me a lot of steps. Great video. I feel more prepared now. The best part is knowing it's not going to happen at once. Thank you again.
Awesome! glad to help! many years of mistakes packed into this video lol
Appreciate the nice comment sir! thanks for watching
Something else you can use I noticed you didn't mention that saved me a ton of time is rolling compost/peat moss spreader it's a roller drum with a handlebar thats basically just a squirrel cage barrel that you can fill up with your compost and/or sand and you can either push it around by hand or you can pull it around with a mower or ATV you can also rent them from Home Depot. A job would normally take two or three days you can do in a single day maybe even a couple of hours because it will only let material out in the low spots as long you don't go real fast.
Thanks for sharing. I have been battling the landscape around our house/property for nearly four-(4) years - I just wish I could afford some of the equipment.
man this is awesome, it's like having Jesse from Breaking Bad explaining detailed gardening shit
Lol never heard that before!
science bitch!
@@feralpanda5084 LMAO
Excellent video. We have a lawn that seems more prone to growing cattails than grass. Besides the ruts we have, we have about six areas ranging from 2x3' to 12 x 18 ' that holds water up to almost two weeks after a rain.
Thanks!
Leveling will help with drainage! 👍👍
Good deal man! Love the 50/50 sand mix idea. That earned my sub right away! I've watched a lot of lawn channels on RUclips and you're the first to mention going after that mix. I have a very soft, yet rocky unleveled yard in desperate need of renovation so these do's/do not's were perfect! I can see your channel getting a lot of traction. Keep refining your channel and you'll go far! ✌🏻
Awesome dude thanks for the sub!
i really like using the sand soil mix especially when you have to do major levling.
Good luck w your project!
Thanks George. I was going to start my lawn this spring but we just got snow in MA today. I would have been upset if I had started. Great tips. I like the tip about the sand also.
No problem gayle! good thing you didn't start! i know your probably itching to get out there!
We all are 😊 Thanks for watching:)
Great videos George . I really like the way you explain everything we need to know with no B.S
I'm gonna follow your tips , cool tunes too.
Peace Bro ✌
Thanks blue! Appreciate that!
Love it my dude. I have a mini-lawn of about 300 sqft. I tried to level it last year with all-purpose sand. Now I know to use mason sand and to at least mix in some top soil. Thank you very much for the informative video.
Thanks bro 😎
It might be 300sqft but you make sure it’s the best damn 300sqft lawn on the block!
That’s a good picture of you in the thumbnail.
haha thanks, i think so too 😜
Awesome video, we needed this
Sweet, thanks!
Great video George. What about really deep spots? I have two areas where trees were cut and stump grinded years ago and the lawn has sunk where the remains of the stump have decomposed beneath the surface. Am I best to load those dips with soil and just seed it this fall? They are probably 6-8” lower than the rest of my lawn.
Thank you for the video. I hope to start leveling my yard in the next couple of weeks, but it's a daunting task. I'm currently mowing over 5 acres of our property, somewhere around 250,000 square feet. I'm heading to the lumber store tomorrow to buy 8 foot long 4x4s to make a large version of a leveling rake that I can attach to the 3 point hitch on my tractor. We built the house in 2006 in the middle of a sloped hay field and the lawn gets bumpier every year; after watching your video now I know it's the organic material in the soil breaking down.
Good luck with you project! with the price of lumber i would just buy a leveling drag outright or fabricate one from metal
George - this is the first video of yours I’ve seen. Thanks so much for the great work. Clear and to the point - you are good at this, sir. I’m sure I’ll be stopping by frequently to ask questions, as I’ve only just recently caught the lawn bug. Thank you!
Such timely tips! Appreciate it
No problem Dennis, thanks for tunin in!
Good luck w your project!
Awesome advice. Never thought about incorporating sand into the mix. I thought that it was dirt only. No wonder my yard is crap...Off to the beach I go!
Thanks! Sand will give you a nice flat finish
I hope you're talking about a beach in some river or other fresh water body!
Sand from the beach (sea) with it's very high salt content, won't be friendly to your lawn, at all! ;-)
BTW it's soil, not dirt. What most don't realize is that soil, compost, etc. is basically organic material that will feed the microorganisms in the soil.
As such it will be consumed making the level return to it's previous condition! That's the reason why people using vast amounts of compost in their gardens. Don't see much change in the general height, even (or specially) after years of application. Otherwise it would pile up quite a lot, which it doesn't. ;-)
@@crpth1 I was being sarcastic. I guess I shouldn’t be because someone might actually get beach sand! Thanks for the info!
Step 1, get a lawn. Step 2, have some beer. leveling is boring. lets make it fun..
It may be boring but the outcome is anything but!
Thanks for watching@
Appreciate this info. Please continue to help those of us trying to support our lawns yearly. Thank you.
Another great video brother 👏
Thanks bro, appreciate you watching!
Great video. Before I level, I need to get rid of the moles.
Probably oughtta see a dermatologist for that, but don't let it keep you from showing your face to your neighbors! ;)
Original juicy fruit gum seriously
@@jillbook6469 tell me more! Never heard about that. Between the moles and armadillos my yard is a mess!
We have voles out here and those things are ridiculous, I ended up getting some of the solar powered vibrating spikes that you put into the ground and from what I can see there have not been any of those little rodents around I guess they can’t tolerate the sound from the vibrating of the stick every minute.
They absolutely destroyed my lawn but we live in Utah and the area where we are at 6 to 10 inches below the surface once you get through the topsoil is beach sand because millions of years ago it used to be the edge of the ocean and the great Salt Lake. When we moved here I didn’t know but I need to rent a skid steer to move stuff around in the yard and I was blown away after I got through the topsoil it was basically play sand so no wonder those little rodents have the best time ever but not at my house anymore. Those spikes drove them out. Amazon. They were called Thenos. I really think they worked.
... blast them
Lol, real talk.. I don’t even have a lawn. I thought this was a Paul Wall video. Lmao. However, I learned a lot, and now I wish I did live in a place with a lawn! #ThanksGeorge
What it do baby, its the iceman paul wall 🧊
no problem dude! good luck w your future home goals!
