HOW TO Level your LAWN FLAT. Topdressing

  • I have spent years leveling my lawn. WHY SAND AND NOT SOIL? Stay tuned to the end of the video. This is the process that I have used to make my lawn flat and smooth. If you have very deep holes in the lawn that need to be filled in, I would recommend that you first use soil, and then seed your lawn. This lawn is a cool-season kentucky bluegrass lawn. Cool season lawns want a smaller amount of sand. If you have a bermudagrass lawn you can really go heavy at it.

    I've commercialy cut for over a decade. As much as we love flat lawns, make sure you're not a dummy and regrade your home slope pitch. Get that water away from your home or your foundation will be gone. New viewer here, and don't know if you regraded your pitch. All lawns should have a pitch. No matter how flat you want it, flat doesn't mean it has to be "level" with your foundation. Flat could be flat on your pitch. Great job at the top dressing though! I see some small pitch changes

    Sir, thank you for this video. I live at the end of the street where we have the privilege of being the end of the drainage and water run off. They finished off my yard and it looks like it could be a rollercoaster. I’ve had to use top soil to fill in to even that out. It’s been expensive because the back yard is over an acre. Then I have let the soul settle and I keep adding as it lowers. The grass is growing through it. Then I’ve had to watch the heavy rains so I know where to redirect it so I don’t mess up what I’ve done. It has been a process. Then the weeds. Crabgrass and every thing else you can imagine. I am going to do what you did to your yard once I get it under control. I work out there every day! Your yard gave me goals. Also, you have fabulous hair. I don’t know if people tell you that but I thought I would. And the boy is going to grow up to be a hard worker.

    I noticed from top dressing greens at a golf course. When dragging, the faster you go the more sand you drag with you. The slower you go the more sand that falls into the grass. So you speed up over thick areas of sand and slow down once you hit bare spots to spread the sand.

    Really appreciate the detail regarding soil vs. sand, after reading the description it seems like rough lawn could use a soil application first year then sand after. It was great to see how heavy the application looks at first and the logic behind bringing it down to the base of the soil level. This answered a ton of questions I had about top dressing. The problem with sand is it makes a hard pan when mixed with many soils. It’s not a good idea to level with sand unless you know your soil make up. Leveling with organic or loam will take longer but not run the risk creating a hard pan. Otherwise his technique was good.

    The weight bearing ability of concrete is not only dependent on the thickness of the concrete but the thickness of the gravel underneath which acts as a cushion for the concrete slab. It also provides drainage in case there are cracks in the concrete that allow water to penetrate the concrete. This important in cold climate areas because if there’s water directly under the concrete, it will freeze and crack the concrete. The rebars will only keep the cracks from separating further.

      @@nutandboltguy3720 - I have always done a lot of aerating and if you think about a few hundred/thousand holes in the lawn, they will let a lot of the material fall into them and it's gone from the surface... Which is what you want if you don't have perfect, sandy loam soil... Get the reference - "sandy" loam soil??? In Central California along Highway 99 north and south, east and west, there lies the most sandy loam soil I have ever seen...Thousands of acres... And because of this great mixture, everything grows so well! That is why California provides over half of America's need for produce, vegetables, grapes, nuts, etc...That great soil mix... So, aerating in my experiences works very well and everything that falls into those holes is gone, and mixed with compost, fertilizer, the breakdown of the compost, etc., and the grass, plants, etc.. just use it up.. Good luck with your project !

    Love the video! Always look forward to your leveling vids. How come the quarry doesn’t go by volume instead of weight when charging you? If there’s moisture in the sand you get short changed.

      Most likely it’s because it goes by the weight that a truck can haul at any given time so they know what each load cost

      The cost of the sand and equipment rental would be relevant to deciding if this is worthwhile. Not just the one year cost...if this is annual maintenance, what does the 5 or 10 year cost look like?

    I'd love to see a good core (like a pro plugger size core). I'm curious how much sand you are sitting on now. You've been top dressing for a few years now so I'm curious to see what that looks like over time. It seems like so much, but it probably isn't.

    Forgive me if someone else already asked, but I'm curious to know if the huge truck used to haul the 10 tons of sand and then more later is part of your business's fleet or how you came to use it. It looks like something you need a Class A license to operate. I'd sure love to be able to operate one some day and haul around my own material!

    • @Big_John_C
      @Big_John_C Год назад

      Class A is for towing a heavy trailer over 10,000 lbs, class B is for a single unit of any weight.. In Michigan if the truck doesn't exceed 26,000 lbs no CDL is required

    Would you use sand over soil when you have 3 and 4 inch deep low spots all over your yard?

    • @mrkraymnd
      @mrkraymnd 2 года назад

      Depending on your turf you may want to either 1. Dig out turf, backfill, then put turf on top (southern lawns mostly) or 2. Fill with soil/sand and seed (northern lawns mostly)

    • @derektestorff1900
      @derektestorff1900 2 года назад

I was going to spend it anyway on the house cause it was a dump. My neighbors would drive by and say I like what your doing to the house when I told them I was just renting they would look at me like I was crazy I would remind them that they liked it right?
