George, that was a fantastic video. One of the most informative videos I can recall seeing. Its unfortunate in my area finding a landscaping/soil company of that quality is virtually impossible. Still, in all, superb video with tons of info!
Down south where we have creeping warm weather grasses like centipede, sand can be very effective, especially if you have trouble with drainage. But you are correct; make sure it's dry so you can get it into the lowest spots faster.
I wish there was a supplier of Tim Wallace's caliber in my area. We have just a handful of landscaping suppliers in my neck of the woods (under 8 in a city population of over 450K) but assure you, none are on a level that can compete with the scope of services Tim and his crew offer. With all that said, a very helpful video George. It's opened my eyes to view the importance of how higher quality material can make such a difference in the success of lawn maintenance.
This was a great video and very informative . In N FL. we don't have a place like this . Nothing covered only know of one placed that screens it not sure if they do all their soil . They mix this special blend its $ 55 a yard . Regular yellow sand down here is like 350-400 a load 18 yards . Used to work in site prep and drove dump trucks . A 10 wheel dump truck can only haul legally 20 tons most aggregate facility will only load 18 ton so they don't over load you. Most folks sell by the yard on everything if they don't get a full bucket you get ripped off. The place I goto has a bucket that 3x3x3 it's 1 yard so you pretty much get what you pay for but not always. Yes you are right about the bag soil being full of sticks and other clearing debris , also they are full of insects that will eat your plants upThanks for your videos.
I like to use all purpose sand mixed with Black Kow. After I get the leveling done, I top dress with Black Kow using my roller spreader. I use the all purpose sand because it has a darker color. Play sand is bleached white sand. I think its ok, but all purpose sand looks better when its applied. A lawn leveling rake and roller spreader is a great investment if you want the best lawn around.
Another great video George. You’re so lucky to have a locally owned business like that so close to your house. Unfortunately the local companies around here don’t really have a pure product, so I have to use the big box stores.
Boots on the ground reporting George!! Great info and you’re definitely lucky to have a landscape company like that. Tough to find that quality soil/sand. 👏👏👏
I wish they were here in NH. We have 'the dirt doctor' and from my first (and last) 2 yard load of top soil (which I had to hand sift with my DIY 1/4" screener), my yard became infected with pink patch and a white & a black smokey looking fungus within days... 28 years with no problem with such things until I went there... I wound up taking more than 2/3rds of the dirt to my local dump. Thankfully, I didn't put more down on my lawn but just walking around (or my dog walking) spreads it everywhere....
Nice video. I ordered a dirt/sand mixture from a different place and it was rather wet and full of small rocks here and there. Certainly not pulverized or screened down to the levels that this place claims (Sand to 1/32" and Soil to 1/4" to 3/8").
This video was awesome! The man you interviewed was really informative. I wish I could get soil like that closer to me. I live in the Nashville area. I have 2 acres of land I take care of. So I topdress every year in the fall. It's such a job because even though I think I'm paying for soil blends like this, I get clumpy hard to distribute through my lawn. Thanks for the info.
I was a week late of watching this. I wish I would have done some research. I just got 6 yards of a 70/30 blend and it was clumpy as hell. Good learning lesson though. Keep up the good work.
Man wish we had a company around here that cared this much. Its very hard to find dry, pulverized or screened soil in my area. The last time i ordered some we got it almost 100 miles away 😂.
O.K., you made a really nice informative video there. Especially for your Chicago area viewers. If I was living over there, that's exactly where I would go, Tim Wallace Landscape supply. Again "GOOD" video, thank you, and thank you to Tim Wallace for taking the time.
Another excellent video! I moved from near you - (Bartlett) to South Carolina, built a house and had a sod Pacific Palisades Ziosia lawn put in. ( I wanted Bluegrass but that would not do well in the south of course). I told the landscaper it HAD to be level but he messed it up. I have 18K sq feet of lawn so to get the proper soil to level will be $2K +. When I do finally break down and buy the soil, I will watch your videos again to do it properly. Thank you so much!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I think Chicago will always be considered home. We still have family there and my wife and I spent our entire lives up there until a few years ago. With that said, the weather in South Carolina is hard to beat. I don't want to spend 4 or 5 months inside the house anymore.
I'm just north of Columbia and overseeded spf30 hybrid bluegrass last fall. So far, it's holding up really well and seems to be blending nicely with my Bermuda. I had the only green lawn in the neighborhood this past winter 😅
I didn't know places like this existed. I've got to do some research. I've been hand mixing bags for the minor level, but wanted to bring the grade up 2 inches across the road. Gotta get researching!
I just shave some off of the high spots and put it in the low spots. I know that sounds complicated but it works really well and doesn't cost hardly anything at all.
A nice, clean, widely-available bagged product is Kellogg's Topper mix. No sand, but lots of fine organic material and compost - no lumps, sticks, garbage etc. My local landscape supply sold me junk with tons of plastic and glass in it - was picking out all the garbage for 6 months (glass shards in a lawn??). So be careful you don't buy stuff that has any municipal 'green waste' in it.
There is dirt, and there is soil. 😊 I wish we had such a supplier in the NW VA area. Nearly all have uncovered damp product that is infested with weed seeds from exposure.
Great video. I have been researching this process and found this video the best by far. And to make it even better is I live in Plainfield and have ordered material from Tim Wallace in the past. I had no idea they had a product like this though!
It also depends of the soil you have. Where we live it's 1 inch of soil and under is clay. I had to clean a big area of land from clay as much as I could and make a mix of soil with sand, mulch and other stuff to resolve water sitting days in my lawn. This year I'm going to use sand strictly with some peat moss on top to help seeds germinate. Pure soil or mix of soil with sand is not an option... I already have lot of clay, I need to let water dry faster from my lawn.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare aeration was done before the winter. I still see some holes in the ground, so... it should work. But I need to try as is and see how it works :)
Outstanding Video with Phenomenal information. You allowed me to go into my pre-Lawn level mode for September. I have bumpy and lawn diverts due to the Lawnmower. I will be shopping around for a place that has a blender machine. Thank You Sir. Thank
I had a big/heavy oak tree taken down some time ago that left a trench. In addition, I had a tree stump grinned down that over the years has sunk into a cavity. Really complicates mowing ! At this stage I am looking for a pro landscaper to fix this situation. I will refer whoever I hire to your video or at least use it to make sure it is fixed correctly. Thanks
Ha! I asked my soil guy about mixing it. He said "nope." The best they'd do it put in into the same truck and it would be "mixed" when they dumped it. I think he should have a conversation with Tim. LOL.

Love seeing how far you've come. You, sir are a professional. Thank you for putting in this good work for us.
Thanks boss! It’s been a fun journey 😃
Nice video. I ordered a dirt/sand mixture from a different place and it was rather wet and full of small rocks here and there. Certainly not pulverized or screened down to the levels that this place claims (Sand to 1/32" and Soil to 1/4" to 3/8").
Thanks Kevin, sorry to hear about your experience
This video was awesome! The man you interviewed was really informative. I wish I could get soil like that closer to me. I live in the Nashville area. I have 2 acres of land I take care of. So I topdress every year in the fall. It's such a job because even though I think I'm paying for soil blends like this, I get clumpy hard to distribute through my lawn. Thanks for the info.
Appreciate that Eddie!
Sounds like you have quite the project every year!
I was a week late of watching this. I wish I would have done some research. I just got 6 yards of a 70/30 blend and it was clumpy as hell. Good learning lesson though. Keep up the good work.
Thanks boss! And sorry to hear!
How did you get rid of the clumps?
Great video man I wish there were more places like this around
Thanks dude!
Some of the nicest top soils I've ever seen! You'd be lucky to be near Tim's business!
forsure dude!
Wow. You guys are super close to me. I’ll be reaching out next spring. The last company I used gave me a yard full of weeds.
I never knew such a great establishment existed, thank you very much, Awesome video! Very impressive and informative.
No problem Nesto! good to see you back for another season!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Always here brother, trying to learn from the best.
Man wish we had a company around here that cared this much. Its very hard to find dry, pulverized or screened soil in my area. The last time i ordered some we got it almost 100 miles away 😂.
Oh, now this is what I am talking about. Thanks for this video. I will check it out. I wish we had a supplier like Tim over by O'Hare!!!
No problem neighbor!
Ask him for a shipping quote to the Twin Cities area. This guy does it right! Another banger bro!
haha not so sure he crosses state lines but ill ask 😂
Outstanding video. That place is awesome. Love how he produces a excellent product. Wish we had a place like there in San Antonio
Thanks Mike! Appreciate you stopping by!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare no problem. Looking forward to more videos and learning from you.
O.K., you made a really nice informative video there. Especially for your Chicago area viewers. If I was living over there, that's exactly where I would go, Tim Wallace Landscape supply. Again "GOOD" video, thank you, and thank you to Tim Wallace for taking the time.
Appreciate it Richard
Another excellent video! I moved from near you - (Bartlett) to South Carolina, built a house and had a sod Pacific Palisades Ziosia lawn put in. ( I wanted Bluegrass but that would not do well in the south of course). I told the landscaper it HAD to be level but he messed it up. I have 18K sq feet of lawn so to get the proper soil to level will be $2K +. When I do finally break down and buy the soil, I will watch your videos again to do it properly. Thank you so much!
Hey neighbor! i gotta ask... where do you like living better, chi or SC???
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I think Chicago will always be considered home. We still have family there and my wife and I spent our entire lives up there until a few years ago. With that said, the weather in South Carolina is hard to beat. I don't want to spend 4 or 5 months inside the house anymore.
I'm just north of Columbia and overseeded spf30 hybrid bluegrass last fall. So far, it's holding up really well and seems to be blending nicely with my Bermuda. I had the only green lawn in the neighborhood this past winter 😅
Nice video George. I’m in the area I’ll be call them to help with my lawn in the fall. Thanks very informative
George,Tim = Professional’s
Awesome video. Great for clarifying on what to use for lawn leveling!
No problem Keith! Glad it was helpful
Awesome content George! I will be looking for the Minneapolis version of Tim’s product this season!
Thanks Jamie! Happy to hear as our goal was to help people find quality suppliers to find the best mixes for their leveling projects
Just leveled out my grass, can’t wait for the next top dress, should be even smoother
that second level will be the major game changer
I didn't know places like this existed. I've got to do some research. I've been hand mixing bags for the minor level, but wanted to bring the grade up 2 inches across the road. Gotta get researching!
We need a Tim’s franchise! 😂 Can’t find this level product anywhere that delivers 😢
I just shave some off of the high spots and put it in the low spots. I know that sounds complicated but it works really well and doesn't cost hardly anything at all.
i seen that done before! pretty cool!
thanks for sharing
A nice, clean, widely-available bagged product is Kellogg's Topper mix. No sand, but lots of fine organic material and compost - no lumps, sticks, garbage etc. My local landscape supply sold me junk with tons of plastic and glass in it - was picking out all the garbage for 6 months (glass shards in a lawn??). So be careful you don't buy stuff that has any municipal 'green waste' in it.
Great tip Arthur!
Thanks for sharing!
I’ll keep kellogg in mind next time I need some bagged soil
There is dirt, and there is soil. 😊
I wish we had such a supplier in the NW VA area. Nearly all have uncovered damp product that is infested with weed seeds from exposure.
Great video. I have been researching this process and found this video the best by far. And to make it even better is I live in Plainfield and have ordered material from Tim Wallace in the past. I had no idea they had a product like this though!
Thanks Neighbor!
I already have lot of clay, I need to let water dry faster from my lawn.
are you going to core aerate before leveling with sand?
those holes will act like mini drains
@@PrincessCutLawnCare aeration was done before the winter. I still see some holes in the ground, so... it should work. But I need to try as is and see how it works :)
Outstanding Video with Phenomenal information. You allowed me to go into my pre-Lawn level mode for September. I have bumpy and lawn diverts due to the Lawnmower. I will be shopping around for a place that has a blender machine. Thank You Sir.
Thank
No problem! Glad it helped!
Thanks
Pro tip: don't ask the guy who sells the stuff what you should get.
Why? They know what they are doing
Ha! I asked my soil guy about mixing it. He said "nope." The best they'd do it put in into the same truck and it would be "mixed" when they dumped it. I think he should have a conversation with Tim. LOL.
Wish we had a place like that out here where I live. Great video and info thank you 🙏🏽
No problem green! Appreciate you taking the time to comment
Tim,
Bro your videos are getting more and more interesting....good job!!!😊
""George
and thanks! appreciate it!
