  • Thinking about using Weed & Feed? WATCH THIS.
Weed and feed is a type of lawn fertilizer that contains both herbicides and fertilizer. While it may seem like a convenient solution for maintaining a healthy and weed-free lawn, the truth is that weed and feed is the least effective way to apply weed control to your lawn.
Firstly, weed and feed products contain herbicides, which are designed to kill weeds. While these chemicals can be effective at eliminating weeds, the mode of action weed and feed uses is not t effective. Weed and feed requires you to spread granular herbicide across a wet lawn. Granular herbicide is not as effective as using a liquid herbicide. In this video, I recommend using an alternative herbicide called Ortho Weed Be Gon which is a liquid herbicide and is much more effective
Furthermore, weed n feed products can have negative impacts on the environment. When you apply these weed & feed to your lawn, you broadcast it across your whole lawn, even to areas that don’t need weed control. Using an alternative liquid herbicide will allow you to spot treat weeds instead of broadcasting everywhere.
Another issue with weed & feed products is that they often contain high levels of nitrogen which is essential nutrients for plant growth. However, if these nutrients are applied in excess, they can cause harm to your lawn. Its very easy to burn your lawn with weed and feed as it contain both a high amount of herbicide and a high amount of nitrogen.
In conclusion, weed and feed products may seem like a convenient solution for maintaining a healthy and weed-free lawn, but the truth is that they can be harmful to the environment and your health. Instead of using weed and feed products, consider using a separate dedicated liquid herbicide and a dedicated fertilizer.

I’ve used Turf weed & feed in my yard for the past years with great results. The trick I’ve done is I do this early in match and during and will apply it dry or wet in my established yard. Usually I do before I know rain is coming and do at least twice and sometimes heavy and that will carry my yard for the rest of the year and my grass is super thick (high) and weed free

Ive also mounted my spray bottle to my rider, that way i can spot treat as i mow.

I use BOTH. A Scott 3 n 1 and the Ortho spray. The Ortho goes down first. Now with the lawn wet, i drop the Scotts 3 n 1. It now sticks to the weed leaves as they are damp. These works great and between the two, clears up stubborn weeds like Creeping Charlie in no time as well as feeding my lawn. Indeed since starting this approach my lawn is nearly weed free and is so thick it essentially just crowds out everything else.

I have explained to several people that weed and feed only works if it sticks to the leaves of the weed plants. The directions on the bag explain that as well. Apparently at least the people I have spoken to about it, will always disagree, they know better. Personally I will not use it because it is an overload of herbicide to continually apply herbicide to an entire lawn. I spot spray the weeds.

Thanks for the video. I’m the opposite when it comes to fertilizer. I specifically buy Lesco fertilizer because of the larger granules. The granules are heavier which means they get thrown further distance by the spreader. That’s important if you have a Scotts spreader. Most people will tell you they hate their Scotts spreader because it doesn’t properly distribute the fertilizer. That does not happen when you use Lesco granules in a Scotts spreader.

Big TMK I have some areas of the property that I'm trying to get the grass to continue to come in, expand from the rest of the yard and I'll use it as areas to let the horse graze. I am not going to break the bank or really spend a significant amount of money and would rather let it grow in naturally. What I've done was pull up as much weeds as I can and feel like lol and use an old school slang blade to sling small trees/shrubs and loppers to cut the one's that are a little thicker, I cut those down close to the ground. I think that once the grass starts taking over then it'll choke out those roots of the small trees and I'll continue to sling them down anyway. From what you just said though what do you think would be the best combo to use or thing to do and again I'm not trying to beautify my actual yard/lawn but just get the grass to come up evenly for the most part or decent then it'll be fine. Trying to give it a little boost I guess. I also think I need to give it attention in the fall as well as the spring to help it out but for now this late in the game what might be best to do, and spring fall recommendations?

The prill size is primo. Some brands are like spreading rock salt like YM. Once i deplete inventory i will be using some basic fert such as Urea and AMS. My lawn will look incredible regardless whether a 10 bag or 100 bag. Its more about passuon and effort to acheiving goals. Watxh my ProVista KBG project. Ah last video said only about 5 people in the US have it. Well im 1 of 2 that grew it from seed. It will be a showcase and will apply nothing special once current invenoty is gine. Was it “Weed and Feed” by chance? “Yes.” “Please don’t do that again. Your trees have been affected by that product. It is better to use regular fertilizer across the yard, and spot treat the weeds rather than spreading a herbicide all over the lawn.” Also, the feed the mature trees, he used a post hole digger to put two foot deep holes around the drip line, and pour in a slow release high nitrogen fertilizer. My trees recovered in a couple of months.

I tend to agree with this video, but if your lawn is big or completely full of weeds I would start with a weed and feed application at first and then spot spray weeds after they’re somewhat under control. Those sprayers can be hard on your back if you have to spray them a lot.

Also, the temperature for the weed killer has to be in the optimal range to be the most effective.

Another major benefit to the non-W&F STB is the uniform granules.
Fertilizers have multiple ingredients, and nearly all of the lower quality fertilizers just build the ratios of the ingredients by a mix of granules from each. Urea or ammonium, iron, phosphates, potassium, etc., each in individual granules of different sizes and weights, all thrown into the bag at "proper" ratios. This can cause some of the granules to setting in the applicator during application, meaning some areas of the lawn get more of one ingredient than they should, without enough of others.
Scotts uses a uniform granule. ALL of their ingredients are chemically bonded at proper ratios, *then* ground into uniform single granules. You can visibly see this in the examples he shows at 4:43. Look closely and you'll see the different ingredient granules in the Lesco bag, while the Scotts bag is uniformly the same single granules, each of which has a proper ratio of the different ingredients to feed your lawn.

Here in southern California, I always recommend Scotts Ultra Feed for lawns because it contains slow release fertilizer and has a high nitrogen content (40-0-5). It lasts about 6 months. The native soil here contains plenty of potassium and one only needs to apply phosphorous once because it cannot be flushed out of the soil so the fact that the PK is low in this fertilizer is of no consequence. Scotts Turf Builder (32-0-4) contains less nitrogen and it is not slow release so it must be re applied more often.

I always use Scotts Weed and Feed for “southern” lawns, St Augistine. I apply in March on a dry lawn and then hit the sprinkler system over night. I like to apply Spectricide granuals at the same time for the fire ants. I have the greenest and weed free lawn on the block. The weed and feed is a preemergant and does not work as well on established weeds. The Southern version is not messy as you desribed and quick and easy. It has a lot of nitogen to get the fast green in the spring and not good for rthe rest of the year because you will be making too much grass. I do not like weed sprayers, they are messy. If I have sprayed it is a gress edger type or a hose sprayer for the entire lawn. Once St Augistine kicks in it overtakes all weeds unlike northern lawns.

HUGE TIP: PLEASE state...upfront.... the region of the Country each product should be used in. The Lawns in Upstate New York are far different than those in central Florida. Here in FL most homes with larger lawns are typically planted with St. Augustine grass....which my NY relatives call (and consider) Crabgrass and generally, a weed despite how green and lush. Yes, it's not the technical term but old Uncle Harry will kill his lawn and flowerbeds if he didn't have better knowledge of the predominately ornamental grass types by region.
