K2 sounds fuller and natural. It has solid outputs. Only some people can understand this fact. It will fit best in the mix.
Her vocal pitch starts "low" on the K2, and rises every take with the next up mic.
No one noticed/mentioned. Makes a HUGE difference on a recording if the singer sings more in her or his vocal comfortzone (or even a little higher).
..My no. 1 choice in this tube mic shootout, ..the K2:
Round and thick sounding, like a tube should in my opinion. Se and Warm Audio more bright/sibilant (more like condensor mic's) and some obvious plosives.
No, I don't own a K2.
I agree with you. I found the SE the worst of the three, and the most sibilant.
Really handy and detailed review of these workhorse tube mics. Good to know about the phantom power not damaging the mics but possibly introducing some background noise if it is activated. Top stuff and thank you.
Hi Brad and Meg, thank you for this review. I have just bought the SE Z5600ii after considering the Rode K2 as well. The vocal test really helped.
I had also looked on Audio Test Kitchen which is a great site, but found easier to hear the difference with Meg singing - part of the problem with comparing mics is how different mics favour different voices.
As an aside, part of reason why I was considering the K2, was how it sounded on the drums/kick drum in particular on audio test kitchen.
Regards
Paul
Loved This! Helped me make my choice, thank you!
This is my favorite series on RUclips. Hello Is It Mics You're Looking For freaking rules. I wish you guys did one of these every week.
Meg, your questions are very valid! Don’t be afraid to ask them because there are plenty of folks who just don’t know. We’ve all got to start learning somewhere. I commend you for asking questions in the first place!
the K2 is definitely cleaner but this can be a good thing for some tastes and applications, and you can give it more character swapping out the tube and driving a vintage preamp. it still has the smoother top end of a tube mic, so i don’t agree the “might as well be a regular condenser” comment.
I agree 100%
I run a Rode K2 through a blue robbie into a KT76 and it is absolutely killer. It's a clear and thick/ warm sounding. Highly recommended. Even when i run the K2 through my RND 511 its incredible.
For warmth I like the WA47, for detail and more of a modern tube mic sound, the SE, I was surprised and just how nice the SE sounded. They really have a good line up of mic offerings. Their dynamic vocal mic is very nice.
The SE2200 is amazing for the money!
Awesome! Review! Thank you for sharing your awesome video...Your the best
nice work guys !!!
Thanks great, would to know can i record Hip Hop ,Pop, Deep House and RnB with Z5600A in studio.
Second how do u use the Z5600A, if i have Audio Interface and Pre Amp
Just like any other mic, plug it into a mic input on your audio interface. It doesn't need phantom power as it has its own power supply.
The WA-47 had a big proximity boom on the p in champagne and colors the sound way too much. The Rode was by far the most transparent and clean. What is described as "clinical" is known to audio engineers as superior.
Yes to ribbon shootout! Would be very interested in R121 vs 4038 vs M160 on voice, drum OH and guitar cab.
i really appreciate this comparison... only request would be to hear the mics with a little bit of processing, like some reverb etc
Que interface uso en ese video ?
WA is so clean , got smooth hi-end and the quietes !
A couple talking about knobs love it great mic info too
Meg, Love your sound! Great mic comparison! cb
Also, yes please on ribbon mic shootout. I'd love to hear
1. A ribbon mic shootout
2. A Ribbon Vs Condenser Vs Tube Condenser Vs Dynamic (Something like an N22 VS WA-47 VS TLM 102 VS SM7b) That'd be pretty awesome.
Also, for me, the Warm Audio was the definite winner here.
Z5600 as an allrounder.
WA47 if I had the budget to also get a second vocal mic especially for that super sensitive beefy bedroom stuff (think "I'm Your Man" by Leonard Cohen). Or just extra beef, period.
The K2, as you mentioned, doesn't really fit in with the other two as a tube mic. Just too thin.
Thanks for a great video. Would be nice to hear mics on different sources also. And YES, ribbons of course!!!
Loving the atmosphere in the room btw, it feels so natural and relaxed. I could watch this over and over. But I won't. Gotta scan YT for ribbon comparisons now ;)
I found the Se the least sounding of the three, not as warm sounding as the Warm Audio or the Rode and definitly more sibilant.
K2 sounds clean and fuller.
"that's not a satisfying knob" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
How long were the mics left to warm up? I've found after 45 minutes or so the K2 becomes a different beast.
I have the nt2a, I find it very harsh, is the k2 a massive improvement?
@@oliverbones8966 I'm happy with it. I had an NT1A which I sold. The K2 does sound best when left on for sometime. I changed the tube to a Phillips Made In Holland JAN tube. Makes it smoother.
@@simononeill941 Nice, thanks for this
True k2 is beast.
I would LOVE if you did a Warm Audio Preamp shootout.
Could you guys perhaps do another round of Live dynamic mics & also analog vs digital Wireless systems!
Thanks guys, love your stuff. X
You are absolutely right. K2 sounds clean and flat.
Ok, not exactly fitting this category (transformerless & tubeless); but assuming the UK price isn't way more, for vocals you should also check out Neuman's TL102.
I've only had the cheapo seX1 mic from SE. And somehow it made me think like SE is a little "meh" perhaps. But in this comparison the SE wins hands down. It gave the recording way more energy, felt a lot more vivid. And here i've just been a Rode fanboy all this time. I'd love to hear it through an API 512c pre. Gotta be a pretty sweet combo i think.
Thanks for posting! WA47 all day…. The SE was nice too though. The WA47 is excellent at taming sibilants and has a natural composition to it.
WA 47 is fail mic. Pl. watch PODCASTAGE WA 47 review.
My WA-47 jst arrived 5min ago - the Z5600A mkII will next week because I like both.
Which one you prefer, I have three Z5600s but want to buy the WA-67
@@snipperacoustics Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to test the Z5600. I usually switch between the WA-47 and the WA-251 or the SA-87T when it comes to tube mics
I like the WA-47, but I’d like to have the Z5600A cuz I could tweak it and do more with it. Meg, love your voice and the flamingos today, so cute. These are definitely NOT the mics that when you are finished, you hold out at arms length and drop to the ground...
sooo FET mics next?
Yes! Do one on ribbons.
Is this Anderton's in Guildford?
WA for sure, se in second, WA was more present and full, but clear
no pop filters used???😮
The SE really stood out through my Presonus monitors.
K2 is king. Needs a good preamp to shine.
@@michaeljensen1625 Which preamps do you use with the K2 Michael?
Hi, what do you recommend?
@@michaeljensen1625 It is the least sibilant of the three!
@@ward63 maybe. Honestly my response was from 3 years ago. I don't remember this shootout and I'm probably not going to watch it again.
100% right.
A pop filter during Meg's vocal demo would have been nice... The Z5600A is up there for versatility in the studio but if you are a 1st time buyer then the K2 would be the best introduction, and the WA-47 if you truly needed the softer touch ...
Dang she went for the knee touch 1:15
K2 sounds the best. Australia can't be beaten in case of Condenser microphones. Other two just have coloured vocals. Only natural sounding microphone is preferred.
If you place the mic’s on a table in front of you you don’t have to turn away from the camera all the time!
SE Z5600 (1 Place)
I am more in the under 100 instead of 1000 demographic xD
Rode K2 for $450?? Definitely tell me your dealer because I got it for $600+
Even in the country it was made in (Australia) its $800
Did you hear a usa or australian accent, gents? So, British pounds. Greetings from a dutchmen.
@@meanmr.mustard Go back to Pirates of the Carribbean!!
@@SnipySnob Aargh!
If I might be forgiven for paraphrasing Luke Skywalker, "everything you've just said about valve/tube microphones is wrong". GOOD transistor microphones ( as opposed to cheap modern ones) aren't intrinsically "sterile" or "bright" and good tube microphones aren't intrinsically "warm".
seems pretty biased.. i mean she sings way better with the k2... the rest she goes flat and less lively... but yes... K2 is the best i think.
Best thinking. K2 is best.
SE Z5600 (1 Place) , warm Audio WA47 (2 Place) and Rode K2 (3 Place)
she has a great voice, we'll forgive you for not knowing what a tube mic is.
i dont like the boomy sound of the WA a lot of pops
she is stoned lol !
You simply do not need a 1000 pound microphone. As long as the quality is of a (100 pound) SM58 equivalent that is all you will ever need. The public who listen to your music will never know the difference. Don't get caught up in the G.A.S syndrome.
what. ever heard an sm58 AB'd with a proper recording mic? everyone will know the difference.
@@matthijsblomjous3671 No your listening public will not know, guaranteed. When you get down to it it's all about the look when it comes these large diaphragm mics. Cool factor.
@@Neil-Aspinall honestly not sure if you're being sarcastic or not
@@matthijsblomjous3671 I was wondering the exact same thing about you Go An. But if you must have a cool looking mic go ahead I get that too.
@@Neil-Aspinall anyone will hear the difference between an sm58 and let's say a u87. I will gladly use an sm58 when performing live because of it's ruggedness. you can throw these things in a glass of beer and they still work. however, for recording vocals outside of a live situation the sm58 just isn't optimal, and people will hear that. it's way harder to make vocals recorded on an sm58 cut through a mix than vocals recorded on a u87. you will have to use so much processing that it will destroy the sound of the voice, and then it still sounds like it's recorded through a tube. it doesn't have the crispness people are used to these days. don't get me wrong, the sm58 is a great mic and I use sm57s all the time on drums and guitars and I also don't think any amateur would need a 1k dollar microphone.
She says right off, she knows nothing about mics----why would I watch?
SEz5600aII totally won that shootout
Thanks great, would to know can i record Hip Hop ,Pop, Deep House and RnB with Z5600A in studio.
Second how do u use the Z5600A, if i have Audio Interface and Pre Amp
Yes you can. A lot of rap is recorded on Tube Mics. Your setup will be Mic➡️Power Supply➡️Preamp➡️Interface
its pretty much a regular xlr mic with power supply in the middle. Mine came with a special 7 pin xlr cable but from the power supply you just run a regular 3pin xlr.
Since both hardwares have powers so doni need to turn on Phantom Power on the Pre Amp, or which power do i switch On or Off on both Hardward Pre Amp and Power Supply
@@tebqzik_music no phantom power. if you did by accident it’s ok the mics have a built in protection circuit but should try to disable phantom power
Ok cool thanks i will disable the Phantom Power...on my Pre Amp
