      what kind of mic is that square mic and is it as good as the TLM 103 or U87 or Telefunken tf51 and tf29?

    • @1stCorinthians2_14
      @1stCorinthians2_14 4 года назад +1

      Freddy Jason - I’m a big fan of the TLM 103, but I got to use a U87 once in the same studio where I was familiar with the 103’s and I was stunned. The mic wasn’t even 100% right and needed some work done to it. I have much more experience with the 103 though & I loved it on vocals (usually male), stereo pair on piano, spaced pair along with a KM 184 on acoustic guitars. So I’d say the 87 & the 103 are both amazing microphones. There are some pros and cons for each that you’ll want to weigh. /// Those Telefunken mics look awesome and I’ve listened to them online & on RUclips, but haven’t gotten to use them in person yet. Archie is going to have to enlighten us on the square mic though please!

      @@1stCorinthians2_14 I truly agree, I have all the mics I mentioned and I actually use the TLM 103 and the telefunken TF51 the most. Fun fact Telefunken used to badge Neumann mics back in the day that's why they have a $20,000 Telfunken Neaumann mic and that's why I think their symbol looks very similar.....but yes I really wanna know what that square microphone is!!!

    Late to the party but I really appreciate you highlighting less expensive options that punch above their weight! I recently purchased an MXLCR89 and it is now my forever Mic. If someone is looking for a microphone for low baritone or bass vocalist voices then This is the best budget option I have ever found. It’s got this amazing V shape where it’s full and lush, but then also really crisp and defined. So full body but not muddy on deeper voices. I got mine for 200 bucks on Amazon, open box special and I don’t know if I’ll buy another microphone for myself again.

    Thanks for another awesome video! Definitely looking to get this mic... I know you've done microphone and interface comparisons in the past. But wanted to see if you would every do a video that helps explains the relationship of picking an interface that supports the microphone or vise versa...Like understanding the preamps and signal flow aspect for us beginners that might be looking invest in a higher tier of equipment... The best example I can give is... you probably wouldn't suggest or recommend buying/pairing a U87 with Focusrite solo... what interface or equipment options would you recommend in this scenario, or with the NTK. IDK if I'm making any sense... But I feel like there's not a lot of videos that cover this topic... and would love to get your expertise on other interfaces that you think would work well with the NTK

    • @archiebeatz
      @archiebeatz  4 года назад +3

      You are so welcome. To be honest, Microphones and preamps pretty much have a different sound depending on the artists and when paired that opens up wider results. I’m looking to do a pretty decent upgrade to my studio since I’ve just began making money by recording artist. I currently have an M-audio 2x2m (hate it, poor quality USB Constantly disconnects.) and a røde nt1.
    I was looking at getting the us apollo x6 mostly due to the dual headphone jacks and the rack style design. However now that I think about it maybe it would be better getting a quad and upgrading my mic. I really wanna get into the apollo eco system with real-time plugins when recording vocals.
    What’s your input on this?
    Should I get the x6 and not upgrade the mic or get a quad, upgrade mic to then ntk and then buy røde headphone splitter. (For direct monitoring for both the artist and producer)
    What’s your input, any other options you would recommend?
    The price of the x6 is my max budget. :)

      Incredible microphone. The transparency in all blue microphones is unmatched. I hope this helps.

    I just have a steingberg mic that came with my first audio interface kit. I was thinking about getting the aston spirit, but maybe the rode might be better cuz i want a warm sounding mic. Until i get a u87 haha.

      What’s up? Yeah either the Aston spirit or Rode NTK would work for great quality but the Rode NTK is incredibly warm and big 🙌🏽🎶

      😂😂😂😂 heyyyy man, it has to be protected plus I'm lazy and haven't replaced the tube. I did get the K2 and mannnnnnnn. It's close to the NTK put has switchable polar patterns. I post a review on the K2 and it blew my mind with the similarities.

      @@archiebeatz I’m just jkn. I’ve got a ampherex tube but just won a telefunken 6922 tube on eBay to try out in my NTK. Haven’t used this mic in years since I dismantled my studio but I just bought a new universal audio Apollo twin heritage with a new iMac computer and hopefully I’ll get all of us back together give this mic some breaking in. ☺️

    If I'm going to pay 500 bucks I might as well get the new UT87 from United Technologies and get their new take on the Neumann U87. It actually gives you two different versions of the 87. Check it out.

  • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
    @RoomAtTheTopStudio 4 года назад

    Although it's a fixed polar pattern the best Neumann mic that I've ever worked with is the U47. I do a totally different style of music and vocals compared to the Beatles but I remember thinking this and actually saying it to the recording engineer at the time that the mic made my voice sound like the Beatles and this was years before I finally found out why. It's not the sound of my voice that I was hearing it was the sound of the mic. I just associate that sound with the Beatles as I've heard it the most with them but there are other old classic tracks from the 50's and 60's that have that sound that the U47 gives.
    IMHO the U87 is the workhorse that can really do everything but without the coloring that the U47 gives. It's balance is precise without the aggressive vintage nature of the 47. With the budget in an ideal world it would be great to have the two and be able to choose which one for certain types of acoustics as a producer. Vocals, strings, horns, giving them either the vintage of a desired balance.

    Does anyone know how this mic compares in quality/fidelity to the Slate VMS ML-1?
    About to pull the trigger after much research, but do the extra “mics” (Neumann models) with the VMS overcome the dedicated sound of the NTK that I’m looking for?

    Cool vid...your neuman mic is only as good as your monitors and ad/da converters...PS..remove that chinese valve in the Rode and replace it with a telefunken....then you have a top end mic...your welcome!

      Thank you! Yes, I'm totally aware. This is my old studio. I know have the flagship apollo x16 and x8 plus an Antelope Zen Tour. The converters are excellent. I have some RME stuff as well that I can't talk about yet. So yeah, you are absolute correct about the converters. Also, because I have a few Telefunken Microphones now as well and some are tube mics, my rode NTK is officially retired. I may do a project with my son when he turns 4 or 5 where we replace tubes and capsules on some mics in my locker. That should be interesting. Thanks for stopping by and dropping some advice!

    A guitar should inspire you to play .
    Same with a microphone .
    It should give you INSPIRATION everytime you hear it back .
