@@HR2635 Interesting, I bought the Behringer clone when I was short on cash, and I thought it sounded quite good. Then my friend let me borrow his real Beta 91A, and it was like a night and day difference, with the Shure on top. Started out with the low grade Audix drum mics (ADX-90, f15, f10, f12, etc..) back in 07/08. Upgraded to CX212, Micro-D, D6, i5. Past couple years I've really broadened that inventory. The 91 has been my preferred “slap” mic on kicks for a while - usually with a sub-kick or the Warm Audio FET 47 clone on the outside if the drum has a reso head. It’s also super cool as a low/floor room mic, which can be really interesting in the mix depending on your room.

I have a behringer version of the beta 91a and it's awesome!!! For $60 it's a great mic. Uses phantom power. Sleeper mic for kicks. Also akg c214 great room or mono overhead.
My first set of mics was a super cheap CAD drum mic set, like $150 for the whole thing. They’re not necessarily great, but surprisingly still have use today if I want something totally different. The kick mic in particular sounds awesome on the floor tom if I just want that super low thump. Now I have a mixed bag of AKG and Shure mics. My overheads are a stereo pair of AKG c214s, and it’s wild to think how expensive just those two are in comparison to my original drum mics.
I also use SM81's as OH's. On snare I use an SM57/Samson CO2 combo, on bass drum I used to use an AKG D112 but now use a Sennheiser e-602ii. On rack toms I use SM57's and on floor tom I use the D112 and it sounds amazing on there. Your snare sounds really good.
I use de SM7 for HH, its a killer... but i have the Audix D6 for Kicks, and D2 and D4 for toms. KSM 137 for OH, SM57 for snare top and bottom, and a Lewitt DTP 640 for outside kick. And suggestions are more than welcome...

OHs Beta 27s in a glens John’s style. Kick Beta52 in with Solomon LoFReQ. Snare currently SM57. SM7b HH. And don’t get me started on ways to mic Tom’s and the room, space is the limit
Great sounding kit! What sizes are those Slingerlands? 22, 13, 16? Champagne Sparkle? If so, I have the same set up (1965) with the matching 5x14 snare! Amazing drums and I will never part with them. The bearing edges on my kit are just a fat round over with thick, maple reinforcement hoops. Huge, warm sound.
I see your drum mics/inputs are bussed to a drum bus, which is then bussed to your output bus. inline you've got a neve, and api, aireq...etc etc etc....what are you settings on all those plugins? You VERY briefly touch on this, and I don't argue these mics are great as I've used a lot of them in my own career. But it would be helpful to know what/how much work you've done to colour the audio from input to output.
Are you a shure reseller 😅? Haha im joking. Great selection!! Would you make a comparison video using similar mics from other companies? I personally prefer a little bit of this, a little bit of that 👌🏻
Hey Andrew, I really like your snare sound here. What snare, batter side head, and pitch did you use? Sounds like the resonant note might be a G#/Ab to me. Would you make a video going over your approach to drum tuning? Thanks man!
What’s on the drum bus? Main bus? It helps to know because it’s not the raw mics. That said, man, absolutely awesome video,… great drumming and superb sound! Great job
Great question, it looks like I have the Neve 1084 (EQ) + EQP1A going to the API 2500 Comp on the Drum buss, sending to a parallel bus with the Fairchild 670. Mix bus as the AirEQ - 33609 C - ATR 102.

What mic pre's are they running thru? And anything else. The Sm7 is a beast and so versatile, I agree.
Now this is what I wanted to know
Drums sound amazing bro! Do you have any tuning videos?
That snare sounds so amazing.
Thanks man!
sounds great! 🤘🥁
Great video bro! You should try the Neve 88RS in the unison slots lol
Try the se electronics v7x on snare and toms and thank me later man...:)
Se mic will kill shure
There is always one in the crowd eh 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️
Can you do a review of your WA273EQ? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!!
must wait and buy one DPA4055 Kick mic. once for all your life.
Boundary mic, i have thought about that. What about the, akg D112?
The D112 has a different sound. It's got much more midrange punch. That's the mic that I started with.
Did you use a cloud lifter or any other dB booster on the snare SM7B? And just snare top!? Sounding great Andrew!
Thanks. No cloudlifter on the drum mics.
Hey Andrew! I love watching your videos :) What are the clips you are using for your SM81 on this video? Thanks!
Cant go wrong with shure!
Good snare sound man .Can You share your snare processing ?
Nice video man! I am also a big fan of Shure mics. How did you set up your OH?is it space pair?thanks 😊👍🙌
OHs Beta 27s in a glens John’s style. Kick Beta52 in with Solomon LoFReQ. Snare currently SM57. SM7b HH. And don’t get me started on ways to mic Tom’s and the room, space is the limit
Thanks for sharing!
Great video man, guitar player who owns a drum set here. I'm curious what shell pack that is, they sound great. ??
That snare is absolutely killer! Is it just a Ludwig Brass Supraphonic?
Great sounding kit! What sizes are those Slingerlands? 22, 13, 16? Champagne Sparkle? If so, I have the same set up (1965) with the matching 5x14 snare! Amazing drums and I will never part with them. The bearing edges on my kit are just a fat round over with thick, maple reinforcement hoops. Huge, warm sound.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
@@AndrewMasters love your channel, keep up the good work
I see your drum mics/inputs are bussed to a drum bus, which is then bussed to your output bus. inline you've got a neve, and api, aireq...etc etc etc....what are you settings on all those plugins? You VERY briefly touch on this, and I don't argue these mics are great as I've used a lot of them in my own career. But it would be helpful to know what/how much work you've done to colour the audio from input to output.
Are you a shure reseller 😅? Haha im joking. Great selection!!
Would you make a comparison video using similar mics from other companies? I personally prefer a little bit of this, a little bit of that 👌🏻
Dayyuuuuuum the SM7 on hh OMG... do you use a cloudlifter or special pre with them?
I don't use a cloudlifter when the SM7 is on drums. I will use it if I am recording something a lot quieter, like acoustic or vocals.
Hey Andrew, I really like your snare sound here. What snare, batter side head, and pitch did you use? Sounds like the resonant note might be a G#/Ab to me. Would you make a video going over your approach to drum tuning? Thanks man!
Thoughts on the new UA modelling mics?
Have you checked out any of Beyerdynamic’s mics?
As long as we are nerding over here, what crash are you using? It's dope. As for the love of mics and drums... 4038. Wut.
What pro tools version are you using and what OS? Really enjoy your videos. Thanks
Hey, thanks man! I'm running Catalina and I'm on the Pro Tools Subscription, so whatever is their most up-to-date version is what I'm using.
Beta 91 is my favorite live kick sound for anything where you want booty.
Are you using that SSL UF8 much? Other than the SSL video, I haven’t noticed much use in your videos. I ask because I just got the UC1 today and the UF8 should be arriving tonight! Wishing LUNA would support controllers, but I’ll use logic until then I suppose. Enjoy your channel a lot. Have watched every vid and look forward to them each week. Congrats on 50k (or soon to be).
I do! I use it for mixing and don't make a lot of videos on mixing. But I have been mixing a record and it's been outstanding for me. Thanks!
@@AndrewMasters good deal. The UF8 just arrived. Will be spending weekend rewiring/arranging home studio. Almost bought the DangerFox desk, but went with the SSLs instead (for now). Now I’m making do DIY style on the furniture. Lol
Take care!
Great video!
I have a 52 and a 91 in my kick, 56A on snare, Beta 98s on toms. OHs vary - I like Beta 27s or KSM137s, but sometimes for a more vintage sound a pair of SE R1 ribbons sound great. Never tried an SM7, at >4x the price of an SM57 I've often wondered if it's worth it?
Hello Andrew
what a beautiful sound you have there. I've been playing drums for 6 years, I never took lessons, only youtube and drumless. I'm going to move house and build a garage just to make my studio with good acoustics. What software do you use to record the drums? Greetings from Portugal
I pick the software based off of the project I'm working on. Sometimes it's Pro Tools, sometimes its Logic and sometimes it's LUNA. Good luck with everything! Thanks for watching.
Whats the depth of the snare? Is it 8 or 6.5?
