a note about music stands: players like to take notes on our charts, so make sure you don't get those wire-y, collapsable ones that don't have a solid backing to write against
Yes. Manhasset brand stands are the ones to get. Slightly pricier than $50 but worth every penny. You can also buy a conductor's stand which is wider and can accommodate 4 pages, perfect for drummers reading longer charts.
Some random items I have found useful in the studio: Alien tape. Gaff tape. Duvetyne. Velcro. (Straps and strips) 9V batteries. GTR Picks. Thumb tacks. Metal binding clips. Bricks of various sizes.
the timing is insane. I literally just filmed this video to release next week. hahahaha I was waiting for November to have it be a "holiday gift guide". 😂
Grab a sandbag from your video rig and add it to the studio Locks in your mic stand placement.. especially for multiple mics, usually can fit 1 bag over 2 stands
Tip for music stands: Get some solid orchestra stands with holes. That way you can hang them on some coat hangers/ hooks on the wall when you're not using them, giving you more floor space :)
Tip to those considering candles for some fragrance. You could try a wax burner or cup heater. That way, you don’t have to worry about the flames in your space
Liked that Mk.Gee sounding music over the intro. Nicely done. And yeah, easy to forget to budget for all the utility stuff like chairs, tables, music stands, headphone amps (even many headphones). Ikea has a nice affordable set of nesting small tables, bench/tables, that's around 100, but gives you around 5 tables but can be used as chair/bench/tables. And they all nest together so when not in use don't take up much room. I'd maybe add a mic locker of some kind - something appropriate to safely keep the mics organised and stored safely where they won't gather dust, fall or have things fall on them. Some kind of whiteboard or perspex glass that you can write ideas on is a neat idea, I saw a clear one recently in a studio tour and thought it was a neat idea. For TODO lists, orderings etc...
Great video! I’ve also found success finding many of these items on the used market (such as chairs.) Could not agree more with the lighting and candle tips!
All solid picks!! I would add some small continuous lights since everybody wants to also record videos when in the studio so it’s cool to have some lighting to make things look good 😉
Tea LOL. I was an assistant on a Elton John overdub session that was booked at the last minute. Gus Dudgeon Elton's producer ask for some tea. So I go and get a cup of hot water and bring in some Liptons tea bags and I think we had some other herb tea bags to give him a choice. Gus is dipping the tea bag in the cup and says... You Americans and your F&*king tea bags! Note to self when British artists come in get the stuff to make "proper" tea.
as a british person I can honestly say I've never seen loose-leaf tea in the wild have no idea what I'd do with it if I did. then again, I'm northern. bring on the bags!
If you really want to go wild, put an outlet at like shoulder level next to the sofa in the control room with USB ports and a small shelf underneath for a phone to sit there.
Sometimes lights/switches with dimmers and in some rare cases there can be a lite ground hum that can be traced to some lamps. It's a good thing to check if you're getting noise in the signal path.
If you can afford to have separate isolated circuits for your audio equipment - which is best practice, really - then that solves a lot of ground issues with the lighting out of the gate. I realize, though, that that sort of thing is rather expensive.
@@thenotsoguitarguy9429 Yes I agree that coupled with tension stabilizers (like Furman) it's the ideal configuration. But it is easier when you design the studio from scratch with those ideas in mind.
@@itsstudiotime not to mention unshielded cables. I stick to balanced cables where I can which use phase+ and phase- to cancel out any RF interference like the 50/60Hz mains hum, and the notorious mobile phone receiving a signal thing. but sometimes you can't escape having to use unbalanced mono, like with guitars, or just old gear that uses unbalanced TRS or phono

@@JoshuaHoweySame like I was at school when she threw a chair. Mrs.jonson grabbed her my the shirt and dragged her to the prinibles office!
As a blind person, looking to create his own recording studio and loves the process of audio engineering, this is amazing

funny enough, we only had one of the same item. 😄
Can't wait to see it bro - As you can imagine this is somewhat of a never ending list.

Really solid recommendations. So easy to overlook the little things that make all the difference. Anything that reduces stress is a bonus.

Great advice. At different points in my career, I've needed every single item on this list.
This is a daily reminder video for myself.
Great video! Those are things you don't typically think about until you need them!
Absolutely

Side tables with power strips and usb are awesome! And can be found surprisingly cheap.

It’s the little details that make the bigger things happen!!
Great list Andrew, thank you.
Absolutely!
Thanks for the tips Andrew. These are really good ones.
Glad you like them!

hahaha welcome to america! My wife makes fun of me about the tea bags as well.
I was at Olympic studios for years. Tea was the difference between graduating from a runner to an assistant engineer 😂
The Beatles made there best music drinking tea

Nice studio 🎙
Thank you 🙌

Lot of Gabe Neal action here I'm into it
Gabe in the house everyday!
My top 5:
1. Phone chargers
2. Phone chargers
3. Phone chargers
4. More phone chargers
5. Notepads
Are there cases where lamps could have a bad impact on audio recording? Or not, it's just a myth? I think LEDs are a preferred solution anyway.

You forgot the Lava Lamp
When did you start this channel?
January 2024!
😊
...no cowbell?
Amazon Basics music stand is $37 👀 Anyone used one before?
i have like 5 of them lol they work great but not as strong as the more expensive ones so don’t bump into them with expensive mics lol
Instead of candles, I use incense!
you forgot cables
Cables are something you’d be expected to have from the beginning as essential. Everything on this list is a non essential quality of life thing.
Cables are music-related. These are non-music items. Utility and decor items.
and a soldering iron, solder, flux, wire strippers, heat-shrink wrapping, replacement/resolderable jacks... cables could be a video in and of itself
