Mission: Impossible Movie Description:
When U.S. government operative Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his mentor, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), go on a covert assignment that takes a disastrous turn, Jim is killed, and Ethan becomes the prime murder suspect. Now a fugitive, Hunt recruits brilliant hacker Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and maverick pilot Franz Krieger (Jean Reno) to help him sneak into a heavily guarded CIA building to retrieve a confidential computer file that will prove his innocence.
Mission: Impossible is a 1996 American action spy film directed by Brian De Palma and produced by and starring Tom Cruise from a screenplay by David Koepp and Robert Towne and story by Koepp and Steven Zaillian. A continuation of the 1966 television series of the same name and its 1988 sequel series (canonically set six years after the latter), it is the first installment in the Mission: Impossible film series. It also stars Jon Voight, Henry Czerny, Emmanuelle Béart, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Vanessa Redgrave. In the film, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) seeks to uncover who framed him for the murders of most of his Impossible Missions Force (IMF) team.
Numerous efforts by Paramount Pictures to create a film adaptation of the television series stalled until Cruise founded Cruise/Wagner Productions and decided on Mission: Impossible as its inaugural project. Development initially began with filmmaker Sydney Pollack but most of the final screenplay was complete after De Palma, Steven Zaillian, David Koepp and Robert Towne were hired; De Palma also designed most of the action sequences, while Cruise did most of his own stunts. Principal photography began in March 1995 and lasted until that August, with filming locations including London, Pinewood Studios in England, and Prague (a rarity in Hollywood at the time).
Mission: Impossible was theatrically released in the United States by Paramount on May 22, 1996. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, with praise for the action sequences, De Palma's direction and Cruise's performance but criticism for the convoluted plot. It was also negatively received by cast members of the original television series. The film grossed $457.7 million worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 1996, while the dance rendition of the original theme song by Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton became a top-ten hit internationally and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The film's success led to a long-running film franchise, beginning with Mission: Impossible 2, released four years later in 2000. - Развлечения
I'm not sure where the myth that people don't like this movie as much as the others came from - this movie is why the rest of them even exist and is classic!
It's ranked toward the bottom on most ranking lists but in my opinion the lists are all wrong. All the others are bigger and louder but as far as entertaining spy films with a suspenseful plot go the first one is easily the best.
This is the closest to the source material. More leaning to noir feel instead of the next gen action of the new ones. Newer audience probably don't like it as much?
I know a lot of OG fans of the show despise the movie because of what it did with Jim Phelps’ character.
@@iknowwhatyoudidlastmidsomm2388 That's right. I forgot about that controversy. To the fans credit they were correct. It was out of character for Jim Phelps to turn traitor but if you look at the film as a stand alone piece of media from the tv series, it's a good film.
I felt like what they did with Jim Phelps and Ilsa Faust’s arcs were just unforgivable
The reason this movie is ranked lower is not because people don't like it, but because this is a rare series where each movie is better than the last, making it one of the best series of all time.
Underrated this film was a big hit back in the day and is considered to be one of the best action films ever
That theme song is just so iconic Tom Cruise played the character perfectly
I love this movie. It was ICONIC when it came out. That's why there are so many. The only people that wouldn't like this is because it's been copied so many times, they've seen all the scenes from other movies, and the formula that was new at the time is now overly done - it's become cliche. Of course, when it debuted it was completely new - it's the OG.
Damn, you knew who the mole was immediately! That’s impressive.
Not really. When you watch 3 movies a week every single week forever as a job, you start to see through all but the most opaque plots.
Believe it or not ,this is the darkest movie in the franchise .
M:3 is way darker imo
@@greatarchitectI agree. I was literally about to say the same until I saw your comment
I'm glad that you're getting into the Mission Impossible franchise. Great reaction! 👍🏿
One of my favorite action spy movie franchises!
Originally, Alan Silvestri was hired to compose the score for the movie, but was good fired from the project as Director Brian DePalma complained about the score for not being powerful enough. He hired BATMAN composer Danny Elfman instead.
Silvestri's rejected score would be reused for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Action Thriller ERASER.
Alan is the second best composer next to John Williams and Hans Zimmer would be 3 imo,but it doesn't mean they are always great.i mean John's music wasn't memorable at all for the new trilogy,I think the directors imput plays a huge part in that.
3 is good, but 4 is really where it gets really interesting.
3 was great but after that is when they got crazy AF with the stunts.
@@ericseitzler81 ya, but we like it. The crazier Cruise is, the more we love him.
J Abrams taking over help push the action and cinematography
@@jeffm9481 yea just don't ask him to plan out the next couple of movies bc for some reason he doesn't know how.
3 gets too much credit. I think 2 is better it has personality. 3 is meh and the ending when he elbows PSH (only good thing in movie) while holding his head is so god damn stupid and corny.
whole franchise is great and gets better and better
M:I is based on one of several tv series, created by Bruce Gellar.
Among many to hit television of the 1960s Spy craze.
My introduction to M:I was the second series from the late 1980s that featured characters of the original series with newer characters.
Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer by forming a company with Paula Wagner.
Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie.
This was 1 of 2 films for Cruise in 1996 (the other was Jerry Maguire).
This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat.
Thanks to this franchise, Cruise becomes a even bigger movie star and the consummate stunt performer we know today.
The legendary theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement.
Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did the new version for the 1st movie.
As reruns of the tv series resurged during the movie's success, Cruise definitely had a franchise.
Also there was tie-in media, the video game by Ocean and the M:I comic book series aka The Ethan Hunt Chronicles from Marvel.
I couldn't wait for more missions as an fan, coming soon and I chose to accept them all.
I’m back Mell coming back watching you. I had to take a break from RUclips. Apparently I guess I was watching too much but I missed you while I was taking a break I was like am I missing any videos? I got to catch up but you know I’m here and I’m here to see and hear you smile and laugh and make jokes cause I’m ready to laugh. I don’t care about nothing else in this world but you, my favorite RUclipsr ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤧
I've never watched any of these movies but the soundtrack to Mission Impossible 2 was what got me into rock music. As a 14 year old girl in Puerto Rico, while everyone else was listening to reggeaton I was looked at as a weirdo for liking Metallica and Rob Zombie. 24 years later and I still listen to rock music 90% more than any other genre lol That soundtrack shaped my life!
Mellow bringing us content that's different from everyone else!! Absolutely love the channel!!
I wish Jean Reno was in more Hollywood movies he was great in this, Godzilla and the vastly overlooked Ronin the fact he hasn't done a MCU or DC movie is terrible. Jean Reno Hiroyuki Sanada in a Batman would be awesome.
Yea he would make a great Hugo strange or Ra's al ghul.
@@ericseitzler81 Ra's Al ghul yeah.
Reno really did help make Godzilla fun
This is why mello is legend 🎉another banger remember watching this on repeat as a child
@@HelloMellowXVI I agree this movie is underrated and don't get the love it should 💯🎉
Never seen these movies and never planned on it but always up for a Mellow upload! Not gonna lie, still exhausted from the 8 hour Sims livestream you did last night lol! I don't know how you do it Mellow, but we appreciate ALL you do so very much! Hope you are doing great, and much love as always! :)
Your missing out big time by not watching these movies
The edits are so funny! Good job editor! ❤😂
I love how hyped you got for the song! I love this franchise and Tom Cruise 😍
Everyone su my boy uploaded 🤭
This movie is solid AF. When it came out people didnt like how they made Jim the villain. Other than that it was awesome.
Saw this in the cinema and watched it on repeat on VHS because I loved it so much. Its different from the others because it's more in keeping with the TV show.
saw this in theaters and also Independence Day on the same day. this MI is my favorite tho
I saw this in theaters when it was released and it was amazing. It's one of the best in the franchise. It may be the *the* best since it sets everything up. I'm really partial to Rogue Nation + Fallout. They're really like a "part 1/part 2" and were incredible. Christopher McQuarrie has done amazing things for this franchise. Him + Tom teaming up is what keeps it from failing like other newer action/spy thrillers.
Too bad Dead Reckoning 1 was an absolute bore with the lamest villain possible.
The original is still #1 in the franchise for me, then Ghost Protocol followed by Rogue Nation to round out my top 3.
I think it's rating as 2nd worst of the franchise is actually a testament to how great all these movies are, as they just continue in better and better with each film.
'Cept the 2nd movie.
The second movie is the worst but it's way better then people say it is
@@sephjnr I would put Dead Reckoning 1 last then MI2, MI1, MI3, MI4, MI5 and MI6 in first.
Just wait til you get to Ghost Protocol!
PLEASE REACT TO "SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON"! It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken.
I cry every time i watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥
I’ve commented this movie as well multiple times, love this movie hopefully he sees it
Almost 30, and I still ugly cry when I watch it.
@@RayHardman7567 beautiful movie man
@@amirk3666 ya. Still waiting on a second one. The 5 TV shows are crap.
Eh
Can't talk enough about the impact of having Jim Phelps as the villain in this. Phelps was the leader/main character of the original TV series from the 60's. It was so unbelievable to many that hed be the bad guy, and some are understandably angry about it still lol
I grew up watching the original series and while they changed the concept a bit on the demise of the team, it still hits right. Great reaction. ❤😊premiere action.😊
“YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT!!!” 28 YEARS AGO TODAY MISSION IMPOSSIBLE PREMIERED IN THEATERS!!!!!!
Ethan Hunt is one of my favorite spy ij films. The hate the second movie gets is for the girlies who hate epic camp films. But 3rd and 4th are it's pure perfection.
Awesome reaction of my favorite Mission Impossible movie!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
I think that people don't like first movie because they like old series more and they don't like second one just because it was John Woo movie. I personally like the most third movie - it have the best villain in this franchise.
luther is defiantly my favorite character also love Emilio Estevez randomly being in this for a short length my ranking minus dead reckoning since i haven't seen it yet 4, 6,1,5,3,2 (mainly because i couldn't take the last fight sequence seriously 😅)
Thank You for all that you do. ❤️ 🙂
Love this franchise. ❤
The smartest and best movie in the franchise. This movie is the most loyal to the tv series (both 60 and 80) compared to the other movies. Fyi the original actor who plays Jim Phelps Peter Graves Rip refuse to play in this movie because what happen in this movie that is why Jon Voight plays in this movie. You should also see Jack Reacher and The Firm.
8:59 that's called a Dutch angle, Mello. And there's a number of them on this movie (look back at the scene where he's on the pay phone, for example). But in this specific scene it's very, VERY Dutch.
You want other examples of this, try Kenneth Branagh's works, including Thor, and *especially* Dead Again.
Let me tell you these tumbnails are bombing keep it up brother ❤
I've always liked the first one, the sequels get a lot crazier. The reason some people don't like this is because they turned Jim Phelps into a bad guy at the end, he was the lead character in the original tv series. I personally love the twist of making him the villain and passing the torch to Ethan Hunt.
This was very close to how the tv show was (in the 60s) - SO, maybe modern audiences didn't like that it wasn't a huge high-octane blockbuster like the more modern ones. I love the suspense of this first one - how he was a team and, within the first 15 minutes, his team got slaughtered. That was so unexpected and unbelievable, when we first saw it.
I know that “underrated” is just a click bait title but it still made my brain twitch 😂 there are 7 movies in this franchise Mello please 😭
Did you actually watch the video and listen to what I said to know why I titled the video that???
The series was new. The first is directed by De Palma. A great director with a Hitchcock like approach. The second was directed by John Woo. A stylish action director who took it that direction. The third was directed by JJ Abrams who started the series in the direction it’s stayed at and people are familiar with. They all have something to offer.
JJ Binks directed the third one, that explains why I think it ends so bad
@@endless013 I think it ended ok. Was a great start really to the stretch and it really was the first one in the series we know. It ended. Everything does.
Before the sequels ever came out, this movie had plenty of love and fans. Still does. It was one of the biggest movies of the summer of 1996. This one has more suspense than action, but the sequels are more action oriented. I think that's why most of todays younger audience likes the newer ones more. I've seen every one of these in a theater. This one is still my favorite. Then Dead Reckoning, then part III. Fun reaction.
Maybe it's just the nostalgia, but this is my very favorite of the series. I love tom cruise, but this was the most grounded. The others had MUCH better action and stunts but this one was just great!
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the words mission impossible and underrated ever used together. Bro is just out of touch.
The amount of people who are literally saying this, shows me yall surface level thinking and that yall don't pay attention. I clearly told yall several times in this video why I got the video titled like this. But instead of yall using yall brains yall want to insult me lmao smh.
@@HelloMellowXVIdon’t listen to them Mel
I dunno who told you people didnt like this one, a lot of critics I know loved it, a lot of fans liked it too. The main point of contention for some was that they took Jim Phelps, who was the main character/leader of the OG team in the 1960's of the tv show and made him the villain.
Everybody liked this film, but there were certain nitpicks that in my opinion dont matter too much.
As a not very diehard fan of the franchise, i can say the original is a movie classic. I'm surprised you heard it is was ranked low.
Every film besides arguably the 2nd one is a classic/future classic
Yesss they use to smoke on planes. I was a CHILD and I had to deal with it.
This is the only franchise I’ve seen ALL of.
One of the reasons why this is one of the lower rated Mission: Impossible films was because some people found the plot to be convoluted. And the cast from the TV series also hated this film because of Jim Phelps being the villain. But I personally think it's a very underrated film and my third favorite of the series following Fallout and Dead Reckoning.
Loved your reaction as always. You should watch society of the snow. It's a great movie and I would love to hear what you have to say about that one. If you do watch it I recommend the original language with subtitles, the acting was amazing ❤
i dont watch reaction videos because they are kinda boring and in my opinion, the reacter often looks fake. but when you are hyped, you are hyped. kinda feeling it.
3:24 He was cute here but gracefully aged.
The elevator scene has stuck to me for life after seeing the mighty ducks coach crushed. 😢
This has been the only MI I have seen but liked it. Only disliked Angelina Jolie’s dad as the big bad, didn’t get his appeal.
Yoooooo mellverse, been a fan for years now, really would love the maze runner franchise from you bro, really enjoy your opinions and views, lol just rewatched your the hunger games vids for the 3rd time😂😂
I bought the box set a couple years back cause I've seen some of them on and off. My favorite is M.I. 3 just because Philip Seymour Hoffman. I love psychological bad guy and he did AMAZING.
Yes, rewatch all 7 MI movies
The best in my opinion is mission impossible 4
The main reason, Mello, the first film is rated so low is just because the movies after this just keep getting better and better. This is an amazing franchise.
Another reason is that people who saw the first movie in theaters, particularly the ones who remember the old show, were kind of angry that they made Ethan the focus of the movie and made Jim Phelps a bad guy who murdered his whole team in the first ten minutes. It completely took them out of what they were expecting. Still a great movie, though.
Mello she was like 80 😅, you into them gilfs dawg
It’s not so much as this movie wasn’t good. It’s more that the other movies (minus the second one) are better than the first.
23:40 pauseeeeeee😂😂😂😂😂
Hot Take: Mission impossible is the spiritual successor to the James Bond franchise.
@MellVerse
I can't wait for you to see both Mission Impossible 3 and Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation!
Mell when you see characters at odd angles that is called a Dutch angle, meant to cause a sense of unease or disorientation in the viewer.
MI IV is the best one IMO. Hope ya love it!
The train scene is still the best action sequence in the franchise, I think. So creative, so fun and so awesome. Close second is Burj Khalifa and the train scene from the latest 😎
Mell! When you’re done with the franchise, I got movies for you!
Sugar & Spice (2001)
Chicago (2002)
Duplex (2003)
All are free on RUclips!
✌️
God I love this series, 3&4 are quite good but I agree that 6 is the best
I would assume doing your own stunts keeps most of the money in your pocket instead of going to a stunt double. Risky but keeps the pockets large.
I think the reason it isn't as popular at least to some is because it took a character from the original TV show and made him bad. Jim Phelps was the main team leader in the TV show played by Peter graves and he was awesome. I went back recently and watched the original series and it's still brilliant. Ethans character has a lot in common with rollin hand played by Martin landau.
I've loved all the movies theyve truly captured the spirit of the original show. Though I do feel the rogue element is a bit overused.
You should watch Jean Reno's comefy, Wasabi (2001) good france/japan fun 👍
Fallout is from 2018. The latest one is Dead Reckoning (2023).
If you never seen all of this franchise, you are in for a ride!
Tom cruise is the last movie star??wtf : Keanu reeves
The lists that rank these films are all wrong. MI1 is one of if not the best of these films. The actual tier list should look something like this:
S-tier: Mission Impossible, MI: Ghost Protocol, MI: Fallout, MI: Dead Reckoning
A-tier: MI: Rogue Nation
B-tier: Mission Impossible 3
C-tier: Mission Impossible 2
Notable though is that none of them are bad. Even 2 is still an enjoyable action movie despite not being as engaging as the others.
Rogue nation should be s tier as it’s arguably the best one
@@randywhite3947 I disagree. The later MI movies are essentially top tier action movies with somewhat interesting plots. While the opera house sequence is one of the best in the entire series, the underwater vault heist, the centerpiece of the film, is a notch below the the central action sequences of 4, 6, and 7.
2:28 😂😂😂😂😂
I hope you react to the whole franchise. would love to see you react to it.
You should watch the "Hollow Man" movie
Glad you got to see this one. This was the best film in the series, until the third one came out.
The third film was the best in the series, until the fourth one came out.
The fourth film was the best in the series...
Please give the Star Trek franchise a chance. 🖖🏿🖖🏾🖖🏽🖖🏼🖖🏻🖖
This film reminds me just how good Brian de Palma was.
Yeah, besides the 2nd movie (and even that one can still be enjoyable as an over-the-top b movie), the rest of the MI movies are so good. 1 is lower on my scale, not because it's a bad movie, but because this franchise just aged like wine with each one upping the stunts, stakes, and plot that 1 isn't as crazy by comparison. The opening and the hanging off-the-wire scenes are still amazing though.
You got to see the movie Monster Inc. if you have not seen it
Man you gotta watch the last 2 Indiana jones movies
The first MI is hands down the best in the series. Superior story and spy elements. #2 & #3 were a huge step down. They took a good break in not making more of this series. Then from #4 on they have been better and better. Overall, great series.
3rd movie is my favourite.
If you liked Fallout, then you must know that the blond woman (White Widow) at the party is speaking about Max, the same lady from this movie.
No one said this movie was underrated🥰. It's one of the best ones. My ranking : MI 1, MI 4, MI 3 and the rest, MI 2 is last on my list. The shorter Ethan's hair is, the better the movie. Ppl think just because you have more explosions and deaths, that makes a movie better. It's the reason why cinema today has traded authenticity for shock value.
Hey Mellow ever had Mello Yello soda from back in the day?
Pls do all the saga
Hannah Montana The Movie
The second is not the worst, only the cheesiest. It's still good in a weird way, I can't help but laugh at the lines and scenes in the second film.
It’s still the worst
Best to worst 4, 3, 1, 5 , 6 , 2. 1 is in the middle because ive seen so many times. Haven't seen 7 yet.
The N64 game....took me like 15 tears to finish it

Please “Watch Blood In blood Out” and “American Me”. Thank you 👍🏼
If this movie was so bad then the others wouldnt exist. MI 1 is my favorite next to MI2. all the others are just fun
Please react to Cloudy with a chance of meatballs
23:29 you pinpoint the whole movie You're right it is predictable
eww "tasting the goods" lol
