  • In most major American cities, residents have been told to stay home and avoid unnecessary contact with others to slow the spread of coronavirus.
But California has by far the largest homeless population in the United States, and while state and local jurisdictions have taken certain measures to protect the unhoused from COVID-19, the vast majority are being left in the lurch.
That’s why a group of families in Los Angeles decided to take matters into their own hands, forcing their way into a number of vacant homes owned by Caltrans, the state transit authority, in the East LA neighborhood of El Sereno.

VICE News not saying what they’re doing is right or wrong but I’d like to point out the fact that I don’t live in CA because even though I can easily afford a 2 bedroom apartment, I refuse to pay that amount of money; therefore, I live in a safe area in a brand new apartment “luxury” gated complex with every amenity anybody could want. On the river .. for less than half...all they have to do is leave and move someplace more affordable.

Tampatec Here in New York it’s the same. What is defined as affordable housing is absolutely ridiculous, even in neighborhoods that are less desirable than others. If there is a part of the progressive platform that we have truly dropped the ball on is homelessness and affordable housing. We became too territorial to the point in where we have blocked off any ideas to provide a viable idea for affordable housing and the homeless in the city. We have swept it under the rug, and have turned into the very people we’ve fought against. We got ours, why should we care, even though the homeless New York population has increased. Why progressives haven’t fought harder on this issue is beyond me, and the numbers aren’t going to get any better. We are in desperate need of a solution, but no one wants to do a thing about it because of the “Not in my neighborhood” mentality. If not in your neighborhood, than where. We could do something about it, we just don’t want to lose our precious real estate to do so. It’s a shame.

If there was someone willing to do the research, they would uncover that the vast majority of California's apartment complexes, business buildings, property lots and family homes are owned by foreign investors. Who most likely have never stepped foot of those properties but instead they hire either American based or local property management firms to do the work typically done by the owners who live in this country. Just in my dads neighborhood, I know that the empty and vacant for now 20+ acres was purchased by a rich Chinese couple who likely bought it on a whim while here on vacation. I just hope they don't do what another rich foreign property owner did on the other part of town, build another one of those damn ugly track homes.

Dear Tampatec: I didn't learn until I moved to California from the East Coast how little of the state is considered a really desirable place to live. Most people where I grew up don't realize that by "California" they really mean that thin strip of beach front that runs from Oregon to Mexico. Anything more than 50 miles from the CA coast is in a desert climate. The coast has the desirable Mediterranean climate. The point is that there is lots of much cheaper housing as you go further inland, but the problem is that most people don't want to live there. I'm one of those people. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

How? Let me buy a house for 200,000 and then only get maybe 50,000 for it which depress the housing values and can cause issues.
What they should do is either demolish the house and sell the land for a lot of money to recoup their investment or remodel the home and sell it for a modest profit. What you do not do is give it away to people who are already dipping into your pockets day in and day out.
Most of these people are not poor by accident but by choice. How many forget that sex leads to children or that spending all their money on crap and not saving can lead to being poor. I am Learning myself that saving and investing is how I can stay afloat.
Tell me... why is it that they cannot do the same? Are they stupid and if not then there is no excuse and they should not get a full house for free. Otherwise it diminishes the hard work of those who did not make everyday crappy decisions.

It looks like the mother has only essentials in her home. I don't see any Louis Vuitton bags, pets, or any luxury items in her home. You seem to forget that poverty is usually never a decision, especially when people are working. She fulfills an essential role in our society, yet you believe she is inferior to you because her paycheck isn't as big. If you just make your living by investing you are doing no actual work (providing intellectual or physical labour) therefore you're literally a drain on society. I am a low income disability almost 36 year old. I live in Colorado but I am from the Bay Area in California. I signed up for section 8 shortly after my doctor told me the news of permanently disabled when I woke up from emergency surgery. It’s run on a lottery system here, thankfully I won and got my section 8 about 6 months after signing up. Between my social security and disability I get less then $800 a month to live off of. Section 8 pays the majority of my rent I personally pay $300 to make up for the difference. Also sign up for food stamps I only get $15 a month for groceries but I can get a couple of meals out of it! I also have to go see my doctor every month which I have to pay for so that’s another $300 out of my pocket. The remaining $150 has to last me all month. After groceries and gas I try to make what little I have left last for as long as I can! Anyways just wanted to share some ideas with you that have saved me! I wish you good luck on all your future endeavors! Live long and Prosper 🖖

@Sydney Austin I have had friends who act surprised when they find out they got some weekend fling pregnant. It's not like it's difficult to not make a baby. I was in a relationship for 10 years with no birth control before we had a kid (intentionally). Not one pregnancy scare in over a decade. And it wasn't difficult. I just cannot fathom what is going through a dudes mind when he is about to bust that leads them to just keep going at it. It has never been an issue, and the thought of getting some woman pregnant for fleeting pleasure is just mind numbingly stupid.
All that said, we cannot assume that people were always in the same place financially before and after having kids. Sometimes (usually) things don't go according to plan. Shit changes, often for the worst. I was in a really good financial position when we had our kid. Not so much anymore (still alright though). The current pandemic is creating exponential amounts of these families as we speak. Things rarely work according to plan, and that leaves some good people and their kids in unforseen places.

Housing, cost of goods, transportation, education etc. Stop acting like your state hasn't been affected. If you haven't felt the burden yet, believe us- you soon will. I rather them be in homes then loitering on properties and trashing grocery stores all day. What the govt is doing is called price gouging if rent was lowered less people would be outside.
Rent was never this high in the 90s. 500-800 for a house that now costs up to 4,000 a month to rent. That's why there all vacant. Stop pretending like less homelessness is a bad thing its a good thing the economy would balance out and people could walk or ride there bike to work in peace. The crimimals would be the only ones left homeless. Easier to catch that way too because some shelters don't let trouble makers in either..
