Closing Universities Is Creating a Housing Crisis for Students

  • Megan Job is a Brooklyn native who is studying neuroscience at Middlebury College in Vermont. She used to live on campus, but had to leave after the school closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. She is uncertain where she will stay until the campus reopens because she is what housing advocates consider “housing insecure.” Throughout Megan’s life, her family has experienced homelessness or housing insecurity.
Megan says her mom, Maxine Stanford, worked full-time but struggled financially to raise two daughters in New York City. Maxine has been renting a room in Jersey City, NJ for a few years, but recently, Megan’s sister needed to move in. Megan doesn’t want to stay there more than a few days because she doesn’t want her mom to lose her housing.
According to a study by The Hope Center for College, Community and Justice, a research center focused on education and social policies, an estimated 14 percent of four-year college students are homeless and another 60 percent are considered housing insecure.
Middlebury told VICE News that a prorated room and board credit would be applied to students’ accounts when they returned. Megan doesn’t have the money to rent a room in New York City, so she is having to get creative with short-term solutions.
She is currently staying in an Airbnb in Brooklyn, which one of her former teachers was able to help her pay for. She will only be there until the end of the month. She will then possibly work as a nanny for a couple who needs childcare. In exchange, they will let her stay in their empty Airbnb. This will give her a stable place to live until she goes to Washington D.C., where she will work as a summer intern for the National Institutes of Health.

Once local restaurants close, the only way they could eat would be campus dining, and social distancing would be virtually impossible with shared dorm rooms and bathrooms. @peter tuann at least she has full-tuition, etc. I'm a single mom, my daughter was straight A, president of many clubs, graduated 5th in her class & only got enough scholarships to pay for part of her tuition & none of her food, books, housing, etc. She took out some loans & has some help from her godmother, but she barely scrapes by. She's in 3rd year so she's off campus now & in an apartment, but being out of work for her college job, but wasn't getting enough hours for unemployment, so she can't stay at her apartment because she has no money for food, electricity/water, etc, so she's currently forced to stay with a friends family, since I'm staying in a home with 9 other people. It's tough for these kids that are trying so hard but can't find the help they need.

Few outlets are talking about college students right now. It's rough to go from living on campus and learning in class and asking questions face to face to *everything* being online and having to find a mew place to live at the same time. A lot of classes just aren't designed to work online only and professors are scrambling to change their lessons.
I am so very fortunate to have had online classes only this semester and live at home with parents mostly unaffected by closings.
For everyone else in college... good luck getting things together. Put the work in to pull through and it'll be worth it. Figuring out how to make things work when your plan is ruined is a lesson no class will teach you, and the experience will come in handy one day.

I attend CUNY, and it was my last choice. I got into all the state school and even NYU, my dream school, but taking out loans to attend an undergraduate program is something I believe is not worth it. I would’ve loved to attend NYU it is just not realistic if I want to change me and my families financial situation. Debt is a very scary thing as most adults have warned me about. It is a shame that higher education in the united states is about making the rich richer and the poor take out loans and ultimately becoming poorer. I did not want to feed into that cycle.

I work in Higher Ed and my institution has kept housing open for this reason! Campus is currently working remote but students that have housing issues were given the option to stay in the remaining open residence halls with the dinning hall open!

I'm so proud of her for not being a victim. The interviewer tried to frame it as a failure of the state @ 3:00, and the young lady said "it's really not their job."

then whose job is it to protect people who can't protect themselves? this is literally what we create governments for, to help people in solidarity.

What about keeping the students in the dorms and live there?

It’s probably a concern for the easy spread of disease in such a dense setting. Imo Maybe they could’ve sent most home & allowed those who depend on it to keep their student housing. Closing dorms might be convenient since they wouldn’t have to keep the staff or dining halls

American society has a very cruel underbelly that is being exposed by Covid-19. Homelessness, housing insecurity, poverty and lack of adequate healthcare are all being exposed. No, the governor should not have the sole responsibility of providing housing, but in the richest country ever on the face of earth, having a huge swath of people pursuing college degrees who face homelessness or housing insecurity is a national disgrace. It should be American society's responsibility as whole, especially for young people trying to educate and elevate themselves. That you cheer this on as her embracing libertarianism is a shameful. Who cares about your ideology of selfishness and greed when it causes people to suffer or even die?

I work in a university in the UK and it's such a contrast to here. We charge roughly $11,000 dollars per annum, this poor girl is paying $71,000 (which I hope is her total 4-year fees). With that kind of investment they could do more, we're trying to do what we can without going bankrupt for our students making it our responsibility. Separating the students between the spare flats, food deliveries, Security on campus, Infirmary is open and a quarantine house setup, Chaplaincy, Disabilities and Health&Wellbeing are providing remote counseling. Our department is providing laptops to students who need them. Labs for COVID19 research and workshops to make PPE. We've had no support from the government. I'm not anti-Capitalism but it seems wrong this company is safely at home taking a mini-vacation on their student's money without providing them support because it can be blamed on a natural occurrence.

@@JohnSmith-oe5rx Homeless shelters are very dangerous and unsanitary. Not only dangerous risk of getting sick, but also physical risk for lots of hateful lunatics are present.

She’s a very smart girl and she’s handling this like a champ, it’s not easy having to come from a poor family and earn a higher education, I just graduated and I’m still facing hardship and the job I recently got is in danger due to this virus.
    I’m praying for this girl!

That’s rough. I just checked my Alma matter, and The University of Maryland is leaving housing open for those who truly need it. I will be donating to help out. I wish everyone the best!
