  • *** It's wonderful so many of you are reaching out with job offers for Mona. Your compassion is commendable. Mona needs some time inside with support services, otherwise, she would not be able to maintain employment. It's extremely rare that a person can go from homelessness to a job without support to heal, and that support must include housing. Mona is a great example of why we all need to advocate for more affordable housing and mental health services. This compassion that's driving you to offer Mona a job, please use it to help all of the homeless women like her sleeping outside. I cannot stress enough how important housing and support services are to help people with the trauma of homelessness.
Mona lives homeless in a tent near Los Angeles's International Airport. Before the pandemic, police made homeless people tear down their tents every morning. When COVID hit, the CDC recommended that homeless people be allowed to keep their tents up all day. Mona has lived in this park for four months, which she says is safe.
Mona's house burned down in the Thomas Fire, and when she lost her house, she also lost her work from home job. Mona has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. She is two classes away from her Master in Mathematics because she left to go to another college where she received a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering.
Prior to the fire, it had been a while since Mona worked in her field doing electricity research. She ended up working from home, and then that all crashed after her house burned down.
When I asked Mona if anyone is helping her, she says service providers come around providing meals, but there is no path to housing being offered. Mono continued sharing it's nearly impossible to maintain a job while living homeless in a park. Mona talks about service providers are overwhelmed, which is why it's hard to navigate the system.
Homelessness is a growing, national crisis. It should be addressed in Washington. Bottom line: Housing is the solution. We need more resources to get folks into housing. Demand action. With your help, we can end homelessness. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/get-involved/ to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

The solution is getting rid of regulations on the housing market so that prices can go down, then cut some inefficient government spending programs and cut taxes further making things cheaper and it also becomes easier to get a job.
Do never let the government do it, it will be corrupted so fast you cant even imagine it.

I have a masters in Mechanical Engineering with an A&P license with 12 years of hands on experience. I work at an airline now making around $200K/year but that's only what people see on the surface. I was near homeless only 3 years ago when I was laid off during covid. It all happened so quickly. My apartment lease had just ended (horrible timing) and they wouldn't renew, I had no family support, I had no income, and my gf since high school left me. A close friend of mine passed from a stroke related to Covid, and I entered a really deep depression where I couldn't get out of bed. I was living in a shared bedroom Airbnb and got myself in triple-digit debt and got severely addicted to alcohol. It's really a miracle that I dug out of that. I never judge anyone that is homeless now.

Everyone needs an emergency fund. They say 6 months expense but honestly, 1 year income is better.
Unfortunately, even people making good money are living paycheck to paycheck. Mostly by choice because we can't get control of our impulses. Used to be me.
I was lucky to retain my job through covid. If I would have lost it I would have been screwed. Too much debt, too much irresponsible spending.
Scared the crap out of me. Now I saved $250k in retirement and have a 6 month emergency fund working towards a full years salary.
Nice that money markets are paying over 5% I keep the emergency fund in there.
Hope things keep going well for you. Save and invest as much as possible. I'm pushing hard to get to 1 million invested as quickly as possible. Sounds like you could easily achieve that in less than 10 years.
Moving towards complete financial independence as soon as I can. The sooner I get to stop worrying about a 8-5 job the better.

She should have been able to get another job pretty soon after losing her house even if it was a lesser job before getting back to a professional job. Why does she have literally no one helping her? Most people have friends and family they can lean on. Why so isolated that you are on the street with that much education? What happened to insurance money from losing the house? It makes no sense. Also, why does she have no savings at all? Most companies have a 401k. Technically you shouldn't take money out of retirement savings but if you're homeless I think that should be an exception. It makes no sense to live in a place that's super expensive to the point where you have no disposable income. She could literally go to Texas, get a job at Costco and get an apartment. It's awful to see people like her who had it all but now have nowhere to turn. You may get everything you desire at first, but it is possible that they will vanish in the blink of an eye. Don't blame the employer, he may very well have had his reasons from his point of view. But do blame the lack of regulations. With the proper worker's rights laws, the employer would have to think twice before hiring in the first place. Like mandatory 16 days paid sick leave (in a row). 3 months standard leave of notice which may be challenged in court if not resonably justified. And worker insurance which accounts for force majeure like a fire. Maybe it would have taken the employer a couple more months before he could employ somebody. Or maybe the pay would be $24 an hour instead of $25 to account for these risks. But it would be worth it for everybody in the end. We have these laws in Norway.

Being smart helps but it is difficult to find a quick cure for homelessness. The first thing I would do is grab a nanny job that requires you live on the premises. I’d get in to see a counselor at the community college. I’d create a five year plan and begin studying at night for a degree. Along the way I would grab connections and letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation can come from attending church and participating in the religious education program, your teachers in the college or university, and your workplace. In five years you will have what you need to make a new start with a place of your own. It is painful and seems impossible but it isn’t if you stick with your plan and keep a steady head on your shoulders. Our society may not work but if you take people as individuals you can break down the barriers.

I can't help but feel that there IS something missing in her story, mental trauma set aside. If a smart woman owned a house that got torched, insurance should have been there to provide replacement. I suspect she was merely renting or rooming at the house that burned, so she didn't get any insurance money. But there is still something missing in this intelligent woman's story. She has no family or college friends to go to for help? The park is the only answer? And the fact she has been this way for 5 months also suggests something is missing to her story. Maybe a question to ask ourselves is, if a friend from college you hadn't seen for years called, especially after a well-known disaster like the Thomas Fire, and said they needed a place to get back on their feet, would you refuse them? (Kind of a twist on the old Cold War debate - If you built a bomb shelter and your neighbor didn't, would you let them in when the Nukes started flying?)
In Pinellas County Florida, Catholic Charities has worked with the county to provide a refuge called Pinellas Hope. Tenting in downtown parks in St Petersburg, Clearwater, or really anywhere else in incorporated cities in the county is not tolerated. Tenting IS allowed at Pinellas Hope which is centrally located in the county, decently near a bus stop despite our bus service being pretty minimal. There are showers, food, computer access, social workers, and security there. It IS possible to be flat on your tail and have a method of getting back on your feet. There is also an organization in Clearwater Florida called Homeless Empowerment which works to get people on the streets into stable life situations. A key component is where job seekers can get on computers to look for work, and have a phone number where they can get messages taken from prospective employers. Getting off the streets is not rocket science, BUT the homeless have to want to accept help and follow rules.

Life is hard, it is not easy, and it is not fair. But it is not as bad as the RUclips comments section or an average news article will make you believe. You will have options, you will have friends. You will make good choices and bad choices, and you'll look back on them and wish you made other choices. 580k people are homeless in the US, 330 million people. Do the math. Yes, it could be you. It is not likely. A solid way to look at society is, a game. Except with real consequences. If you die, you actually die. Etc. As such, while no one is immune from the plight of this woman, you'll likely be fine. Just choose a college major that is mundane but actually useful, and you could reasonably do it for a career. I recently met a dude at my job who got a degree in safety management. I asked him why (thinking, gee what 18 year old considers that a calling, I admit a bit judgemental of me). His response was, I chose a major where I knew I could get a job. .... Do that. Thus for instance if you're good at math, don't go for math. Go for something that uses math. Same for English or anything else, and think about the 20 year job prospects in that industry. We'll still need nurses and doctors in 20 years. Will we need as many broadcast journalists? Probably not, as it's a dying medium as younger populations get their media online or via social media. Etc. Worst case, you can also pursue a high end career that is in demand abroad. Many good to live in nations need more engineers and architects etc. Get a degree in that, and you can move to a country that matches your values. As for passions, get a minor in them, or, double major. But make sure whatever you study is practicable and not idealistic. Good luck.

Got stronger as months went by and it looked like i was getting back to normal income ..then in October 2007 the economic downturn hit my business and my income went to zero. Couldn't get other work, (couldn't even be a greeter at Walmart). No strength, no stamina for a 40 hr job... lost house to foreclosure in June 2008 which began my homeless period. No drugs, no booze, no mental impairment...I struggled to rebuild my business... got a few hundred dollars every other month or so, lived with relatives for a while, slept in my office, my storage unit, my friends/strangers couches, basement floors and many nights in my car ( Walmart mostly) .... got back to full time work again in 2012 for a half a year, business associates stole and defrauded me... sent me back into no money situation so I worked 18 hrs a day for the next year to rebuild.... then an autoimmune disease hit and that took all my work abilities.... lost my office space, phone, bank account, credit..... I couldn't pay attention...I ended up full time in the car for the next 4 years.. social security finally kicked in and gave me almost enough to live for a month...usually 3 weeks then no money, no food, no fuel.... car broke down 05 2019 which ultimately sent me into a Catholic Charities homeless shelter for the next year where I began filing housing applications for subsidized senior housing apartments... their waiting lists were greater than 2 years for most but i got accepted into one after 9 months... long story but not a sad story because I saw Jesus guide me through everything... good bad ugly, scary, he was there.... still is. While living in my car I realized I could relate to others in their cars or worse situations and encourage them to place their faith in Jesus for his deliverance... I mentored several individuals one on one over the next 3 years.... I never begged, never stole, never lied or cheated anyone... the Lord made a way where there was no way....and he hasn't stopped.
