Homeless Woman's Husband Is Seriously Ill yet LA County Outreach Just Brings Water

  • I have traveled to over 300 cities connecting with thousands of homeless people from Anchorage to Los Angeles to Tampa and to New York City, the one constant no matter where I travel is the insane amount of times a homeless person seeks help just to be turned away.
Around ten years ago, homeless service providers started to prioritize helping homeless people based on what's known as a Vulnerability Index. These days there are other tools like the VI-SPDAT but the theory is the same - people who are more vulnerable access more services and thus cost taxpayers more money. If we house them, it would save money. It's always about money!
As a former outreach case manager, helping people who were seriously ill with severe health conditions wasn't about money. NO ONE should die outside without a home. NO ONE!
Dawn and her husband Mike live in a tent in Hawthorne, California. On March 21st, 2019, the couple and their three dogs were left stranded in a Walmart parking lot. Dawn says nothing prepared them for homelessness in Los Angeles County.
So the couple has food and other needs, Dawn panhandles and recycles when she is not taking care of her husband. Mike is an insulin-dependent diabetic. Because they do not have refrigeration, he cannot keep his insulin cold. Mike had four shoulder surgeries and is in chronic pain. As a result of being diabetic, he has peripheral neuropathy in his feet and hands. Most recently, Mike was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
Mike is dying in this tent. He is extremely vulnerable. Dawn thinks the reason they have not been housed is because of their dogs, but homeless services have started to realize homeless people do not want to be separated from their pets. Having pets makes it a little harder to find housing for both housed people and homeless people, but it is possible. Case managers just have to work a little harder to make it happen.
It's extremely upsetting that Dawn and Mike are not getting the help they need. Dawn says outreach teams show up from time to time making promises, but other than bottled water, the couple gets more help from volunteers who are part of Street Watch South Bay.
Very special thanks to Street Watch LA streetwatchla.com

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I’m praying for Dawn & Mike, please keep us informed as to how they are doing. My husband and I were homeless for 7 months in 2011. We live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and were homeless from May 2011 to November 2011. We were lucky enough that our church helped us get the money we needed to get an apartment. If I could afford to give to Dawn & Mike’s go-fund-me page I would, but it’s hard when you live on Social Security and Social Security Disability. Please if you could give a message to Dawn, please let her know that there are people who are praying for her and her husband to find housing with a yard for their four-legged children. My husband and I are continuing to pray for Dawn & Mike. Our church will also be praying for them. Thank you for the work you’re doing, keep spreading the word about the homeless issue in America!!

I have been homeless 3 1/2 years because I won't betray my hospice animals. I had 2 long term jobs. Both went out of business within 2 months of each other. My roommate couple stopped paying rent and wouldn't leave. I was able too.i keep the apt. for a year before being evicted, in the middle of an ice storm. I ended up in some woods in a park, in a dangerous ghetto city. Social services refused to help. I am 57, don't drink, dont do drugs, no criminal record. It's almost impossible to hold a regular job when homeless. Most of you have no clue. It takes hours every day to gather water, clean without running water, e.t.c, - have everything done befor the sun goes down. Not having an address makes things extra hard.Just pray for all of us normal people who are homeless. Most programs I believe, are pocketing most of the money and not helping people.

The entire time I was in court filing 3 day extensions. Only 3 allowed. I was not given those months extensions.why? Because I wasn't on assistance. Every time I went to court, they added $1000.So the original $2000 I owned became $6000,iwas only asking for the 2 months rent I owed, while I looked for another job. I offered to pay it back in installments.I finally got a 3 day sheriff notice that the padlock was coming . That's when I set up a tent, grabbed the animals and went back to get some clothes, pet food and supplies. Meanwhile, like 75%+ in this city is on assistance, most don't need it. And just because they are on assistance, you would not believe how many things they get automatically, free. Even vouchers for expensive shops to buy kitchen appliances, linens, e.t.c- all I asked for was a loan to not lose my home. Just keep me in your prayers. I will keep you in mine.

Her husband was working and now is unable to work due to serious disabilities and he ends up homeless with only his wife taking care of him. Disability benefits denied, housing denied still. People must change that, it is not just the irrationality and perversion of the system that is obvious. People without a LOT of savings and assets, which are the majority of people, can end up sooner or later like that, if circumstances arise. So most people should react for just reasons of self protection, instead of preoccupied with celebrities and memes (i am saying that for me also). It is a miracle of human strength, that in a such crooked system, with no integrity, many of its victims have so much decency and such values., like this woman and many others.

In last 5 years i lost mom, grandmom and granddad. Fortunately my dad pays bills for me. If anything happens to him, i will be homeless too. The problem is, we never got along due too different characters and because i dont have a degree or a profession of any kind. World is a mess. Lots of narcissists and psychos setting rules, lots of insensitive people. As life became unbearable i got addicted to benzos and alco due to my struggles breathing. I know i will not survive on streets with social anxiety. :/ Dont know what else to say. God bless all homeless people that are not in their situation due to their fault. Life is unfair.

Hello everyone and again thank you all for taking the time to watch my interview. I have read many to most of these comments and respect that you are entitled to your opinions. If I were on the outside looking in, I don't know what I would think. Take away the problems and uphill battle my husband and I are facing and look at the rest of the interview. This society needs to pull together. If we all see that powers at be aren't taking care of their own, why would it be so hard for any of you to take a second and ask anyone in this position if they need anything? A monetary handout isn't all we need out here. We need blankets, food, hygiene items, propane or butane to cook, ice to keep things cold(such as insulin). Things of that nature will help tremendously. But more than the material aspect of it, the thought of a complete stranger taking time to let someone know that yes, they do care. That alone does so much.
As for my children, I have asked this before but please don't assume they are not doing what they should. As a matter of fact they are living the life I had always wished for them. I want them to enjoy it and live their way. I will not burden them with any of this. Yes we are homeless but I would never put them in any position to feel they never lived their lives because they had to take care of me so early on. They deserve more than that. I won't be the reason they ever come close to being where I am. Sure as hell not at my expense.
To all who have selflessly donated, thank you will never be enough. It is my wish that you all live prosperous and with many blessings. You are what this world needs more of.
Please keep praying not just for us but anyone who suffers on these streets and even beyond. Prayers work. Prayers are powerful. More powerful than any of us can even comprehend.
    Again, thank you all.

Dear Dawn, I allow myself to suggest you to turn to your children for help. You want to let them live their live, that's nobel, but.......how can they do that, knowing that your homeless? Give them the chance to help you. In a ideal world, no child would want to live "normal" by knowing their parents ( or siblings) are sick and homeless. I would rather go live in a tent and take my parents and siblings in my house.

A vehicle is much more doable than them making buildings... They are a lot cheaper. No it's not ideal... but it's a lot better than a tent.

With respect, there is no right age to support our loved ones. The idea that family can just opt out of caring for each other because the timing isn't convenient, is unbelievably problematic ... and a good part of the reason homelessness is getting out of control. If you have adult children, you are their responsibility. That's how human society has always worked. We care for our young, and they care for us when we're old or sick.

@Stay EZ My Friends Hold on a second. I never ever said charity is NOT good enough. What I say is charity never solved a social crisis. We have to fix why people need food and housing. Plus, it's OK to feed someone in the park as long as you're doing something to get them out of the park.
If it's safe and the person wants it, we will provide a fundraising link. The point of this work is to get the viewer to take tangible actions in their own communities to help end homelessness. I am probably the only nonprofit leader that tells people to give locally to help end homelessness instead of giving to us.
I have worked without income or healthcare for eleven years. I spend every waking moment working to help homeless people. Every day, I help people with what may be considered charity, but I also work to help end homelessness.
The public has been trained that a sandwich ends homelessness, but that's not the truth. We must get people into housing, and food will not do that. No one should go hungry, so if a person needs food, we must feed them, but just feeding alone does NOTHING to end their suffering.

Hi Dawn, your compassion is awesome. I met Dawn and Mike through another organization that's working to help them, and our hope is this video will be seen by the right people and they'll be fast-tracked to housing. I suggest you find a local organization that's working to end homelessness in your community to support. We need to end homelessness for everyone. The first priority is to get Mike the medical help he needs and to get Dawn's nose looked at. This couple needs to be housed.

In Germany, there are more people dying than there are being born, since decades. That is why Germany needs immigration in order to fill all the job oprnings. Without immigration, millions of jobs would be open, meanwhile. Most immigrants come from other EU countries, or other first world countries, like Japan, GB, US, etc.
Only every 10th immigrant comes from a non EU country.
