Ithaca's Tent City "THE JUNGLE": Living Homeless Sucks!

  • Опубликовано: 31 авг 2018
  • This past January, I vlogged a tour of Ithaca's infamous tent city called "The Jungle" [ • Tour of Ithaca's Tent ... ]. It was freezing cold outside. So cold it's hard to imagine homeless men and women living outside in a tent yet approximately 40 people call the woods around Ithaca, New York home.
For some reason, I imagined a tour of the same tent encampments this time of year a little easier. I imagined homelessness during the summer months somewhat easier as if there is anything about living homeless is easy.
The mosquitoes were relentless. You can see welts increase on my face while I vlog. When I got home, there were bites all over my body. The darn things even bit me through my shirt. I am still itching. I cannot imagine the challenge of having to go to the bathroom outside.
The vlog I posted before this featured residents of Koreatown stepping up to take tangible actions to help their homeless neighbors [ • Los Angeles's Koreatow... ]. This video is similar in many ways in that it features ordinary citizens assisting homeless people in their own community. The big difference is that Koreatown is in Los Angeles and Ithaca is a rural community that faces the challenges of rural homelessness.
Carmen Guidi of Second Wind Cottages is a superhero. He may have the biggest heart of anyone I know. Carmen is also pretty much the only help homeless people living in the tent camps around Ithaca have. Government is not helping. The faith community is not helping. Truth is, there is little support for homeless people to get out of homelessness in Tompkins County, New York.
Carmen owns an auto body shop. He is not a social worker. Carmen has no background in professional homeless services. He is not wealthy. Carmen simply cares for people but not with just words, he takes actions to do whatever he can to help his homeless friends in the Jungle.
In this video, Carmen shares why he started Second Wind Cottages almost six years ago. He also shares his thought about NIMBY and bunch of other brilliant ideas I hope you'll watch to the end to hear.
And yes I said BRILLIANT because to me Carmen is a genius! You'll hear throughout this video Carmen talk about other people who have an academic background. It doesn't take the smartest person to see that homeless people need housing, but only a person with extreme intelligence would actually do something about it. Carmen is the king of YIMBY because he built 15 (soon to be 18) cottages in his backyard. Carmen lives YES IN MY BACKYARD every single day!
It's inspirational seeing more regular every day people taking real actions to help fight homelessness. We need everyone to help. EVERYONE! That includes YOU!
Please support Second Wind Cottages here www.secondwindcottages.org

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they're on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can't ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation's most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America's homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I give Carmen all the respect for what he's doing to help those who are homeless ! Carmen has more heart and passion for people than Trump ! Trump don't give a shit about the homeless and he doesn't even help them . Two thumbs up for Carmen and those who are helping him to feed the homeless !

I am so sorry you had to go through that. I was sitting in a spa and two people started talking about how disgusting nyc has become because of all the homeless. I was so disgusted by what they said that I said "excuse me, but alot of the homeless are victims of violence and child abuse" they said sorry but it still bothers me. I was homeless and it's changed the way I look at people. Not everyone is a good person with a caring heart. Most people believe in social hierarchies and that's why I do not like many people.

I don't understand why churches aren't helping out more. Where I live several churches get together and do a winter shelter. People are first background checked, for safety, and brought to a different church each night. They are served a hot dinner & breakfast. The men are separated from the women, again safety measures, and then given a hot meal before being dropped off for the day. Many homeless have camps with fires where the folks will hang out at until pick up time. It's not perfect but better than most. Also the churches have a joint ministry that is run from a thrift store and donations. They have a food bank, will wash the homeless clothes, give vouchers to shower at the local pool, plus help with case workers, emergency housing, utilities and rent, etc.... I've been truly impressed how this community works together to help people.

I'm in the Milwaukee area. It was terrifying what these women - and men have gone through in shelters and worse, how they got there. And, many of the women had their children with them and only what they could carry when they arrived.
So, ladies and gentlemen, teach your children how to behave. What I have seen and gone through is truly a snap shot of our culture and society and how we are evolving.

I'm crying my heart out... I also watched a series called.. Love and drugs ❤️💐😢😭😩, I'm sorry I haven't been on the Internet for a year nor spoken to a single soul.... Isolation so bad.... And I had a horrifically abusive childhood... RAPED at 4..i can't believe I've found my own Dominique Ruocco voice again... I had 2 beautiful beautiful children... MY son is struggling here in Cape Town as are soo many of his generation he's only known struggle.. We were poor.... I made everthing by hand.. I studied sculpture and finally became an artist at age 38 I began my seven year study.. Scrimping.. My son won awards for most hard working student in drama class to pay for his bare necessities... Anyway after one year of compelete muteness and some very hard hard years after being evicted from my house by by husband!!!..... I knew... Oh God I'm 44 now.. With a 6 year old beautiful beyond belief girl... And my son who I had ar 20 and just refused to abort him give him away..... Ect... This was my very first home. And being a sculptor I did most of the work... Laying a cement floor.. The place was my dream.... Wild huge garden next to a bird sanctuary and Bush.. Like a farm a hideaway a true sanctuary for my family and anyone who meant no harm was welcome to stay... MY son came home one day and said he knew a guy his age who was just coming off herion and he said had a nowhere to go... Not anymore... Anyway I digress.. I'm bad with names... The big man I spoke about this morning to someone for the 1st time.. I said I really respect this mani just watched a utube.. About a women with brain damage running to the streets to be safe from her abuser. Domestic violence!!!... She was in times square.... She was beautiful.. But it was my 1st vidoe and I was listening carefully to the interviewer whom I could not see.. So it was his gentle total sincere voice.... I said he is AMAZING.. AND clicked on all his videos... Till this one.. Boy when I "study" with my heart abd toes and tears... So I sought out ot they sought me out... The right medication for my disability and my long wait for a reapplication of a disability grant... Its 1700 rands in South Africa!!! U can't live on it.. The rents keep skyrockinting in Ooooh so beautiful Cape Town.. MY ass... Exuse me.... 1percent super rich and tourists flooding Cape Town because its so..... "Very cheap" as a holiday..... Its an extremely expensive city Full. Bloody stop!!!millions in this city in such poverty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Poverty does not discriminate. Anyway I know I must try a very hard struggle.... I'm also a domestic abuse survivor.... If u met me u would ever guess my story... Ive been told so. Often about various forms of of activism and my face book has been used to get help. Of all kinds for brilliant struggling artists... I am able to write well on art that is totally new.... Peoe will. Say "I can't see it" ".... Then I show you what them speaking my thoughts not something I learned an exam for... I've never had formal art classes.. I learnt in different studios at night to taking one night class a week here and everywhere there was a crack... Savage hardworking girl... Till I. Got injured.... So Everbody in this video has great passion.... U may look quiet and unassuming..... But all the men and women lugging.. The camera women... All are people who love people and are like me a lot...... A movement against suffering!...... Heroes all. Sky-blue hearts.... The frustration is high and hurts and up. Against the senseless insanity... Where we throw people in the garbage all over the world.. If u think in that greed no humanity... "uuur gh.. The unloved.. Unwanted lepors.. I too wrote a lil. Thing about Mother Theresa in a comment this morning.. To. Admonish a comment with all the the usual suspects and some new ones... Pray any pray warrior s out there for me that I make it so I can DO WHAT I Was........ Bornto do.... I will need guidance practical. Advice... See where I can be most useful in helping... I have a very strong protective and knowledgeable and BIGGEST LOVE FOR TEENAGE GIRLS.. YES.. MY DEAREST FRIEND A POET... SUPER INTELLIGENT SAID.. DOMINIQUE U R SO LIKE Artemis.. One if the virgin Godesses in Greek Mythology..... She has a total protector of young girls... But also. HERA WHO IS THE MOTHER.. I wrote this morning I wish I could have all these girls with me they need a huge dollop of love... I'm talking about the Tten girls solely living rough.. In Brighton!.. God bless and now I can share all Yr videos and tell everyone what to watch..... U R ALL BEAUTIFUL.. xxx I think people are beautiful. Thank you so much for letting me talk. Carmen made a good point re. "we're supposed to be the smartest, greatest country in the World"; The US is slowly becoming a Banana Republic; The gap between the "Haves" and the "Have-nots" continues to grow. Many people have to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. a "living wage"....? Medical insurance for all...? Compare the incarceration level in the US with the rest of the "developed" world, and then drill-down into the "imprisoned-demographics". Racism, Gang violence, drug addiction, a lousy public education system; Oh, almost forgot the homeless. American "leaders" need to take a long and serious look at themselves and the "status quo". If they can sleep easily afterwards then the official crowning of the U S of A as a Banana Republic just become more inevitable.

I deliver beverages around Ithaca sometimes for my job and there's always homeless people on street corners. I remember one woman was out in 90° weather sitting in the sun. Crazy. I gave her my water bottle.

Hi Mark. My name is Pam, I came across your channel by chance and felt so touched. I, therefore, just HAD TO continue watching so many more! I couldn't help but feel inspired and compelled to congratulate and commend you on all the most AMAZING work and obvious genuine acts of kindness that you along with all of your associates continue to do for all of these less fortunate people who of course are after all just normal human beings just like you and me. It takes a really genuine, special person, one who is a truly compassionate and caring to accomplish or even just to begin to do what you guys and girls are doing, It's wonderful to know that there is still such incredibly kind, beautiful people in this world and it gives me hope. I can only imagine how strong your motivation and commitment must be for the cause and how much it must mean to all of you. Not to mention the many sacrifices you must have to make, The time and effort AND at times the impact it must make on your private, personal, and family lives too. I would like to take this opportunity to honestly and most sincerely commend and congratulate you on everything that you have already achieved and for everything that I am truly certain that you and all these other amazing, special people will continue to do, and for being prepared to do whatever you are able to for these desperately poor and deserving people. WHAT A REMARKABLE JOB THAT YOU ARE DOING. ******* Please note that I'm actually posting this against my partner's profile, unfortunately, I live in South Africa and can only dream and wish that we had caring people like you here in our country!! If only I could be part of something like this, I've ALWAYS had this yearning, longing and strong desire to help people. I'm just a minute fish in a BIG SEA but would love to do something no matter how big or small here or in fact anywhere else. Before I end I'd also like to ask you to please pass on these words and feelings to Carmen and his family too, what incredible human beings they must be too. Your stories are just so unbelievably awesome and mind-boggling to me. I have to say that This DOES NOT happen here. Lastly, I would also like to especially EMPHASIZE A MASSIVE ACHIEVEMENT, VERY WELL DONE on turning YOUR life around, for turning a bad situation into something extremely positive, and magical, not just thinking of yourself but also impacting the lives of so many others in such an unselfish positive way!!!! Your mom MUST BE VERY PROUD OF YOU! She has obviously raised a very good son. To all of you keep up the extraordinary work. I'll be watching.... lol Greetings from the small city of East London, South Africa!!!!!!
