When I was younger, I ended up homeless and I slept in a park using my backpack as a pillow, washing up in a tiny sink and hanging my clothes over a tree branch to dry. The whole time, I held a full time job and stuck it out until I got a place to live.it was tough but I made it! I feel for ALL who have fallen on hard times💖 May God bless them 🙏

If we give tax-exemption status to religion (like Scientology) because of the supposed help they provide to the community...why are people still homeless?
I will provide one reason: many transition homes are faith based, where you must worship their particular god. And if you can’t fake it, you will not make it.

@@Bat_Boy Hi, Bat Boy. Yes, there's such a long term permanent housing shortage in the country, my state, California in particular. Sad to say, many conservative Christians are against affordable housing. They think you should pay top dollar ( market rates). Shelters are dirty, violent and dangerous places that most homeless people fear, and won't go to. Shelters don't lead to housing automatically. For one, there's not enough housing anyway- it hasn't been built ! In my state, apartments haven't been built since 1980, for sure. Just luxury apartments, malls and offices went up, for 40 years. Shelters often warehouse people, and profit from the homeless. They are paid plenty to keep people from getting housing, actually. Five people are found dead each day in Los Angeles County alone !! There's many bodies that never get found. Ronald Reagan said, in 1984, that being homeless is a choice. As he cut HUD by 80%. And sold off the buildings. Wait times to get into a subsidized housing complex takes 5- 20 years, minimum. Don't take my word for it. Do some research,if this is a subject of interest. Housing is investing in society. But the oligarchs don't care.

I live in So. Cal. too. What I’m learning is, no one wants to resolve homelessness. They want to toss you a bandaid (some socks, sandwich, and phone numbers for over maxed resources) and wish you good luck. That’s society and government (local, state and federal) solution.

We haven't had regular apartments being built since 1980. We have a permanent housing shortage, with lot of housing stock destroyed, to make condos, razed for malls and offices. You can't arrest your way out of homelessness ! But tell this to City Councils and Mayors. They often oppose affordable housing. Even for disabled and senior tenants. They're okay with all the mass deaths- officially 1,500 in 2020, Los Angeles County alone.

What Ryan says near the end of this vlog is profound at 45:08 or ruclips.net/video/TIINeEJOjlA/видео.html We could look at her getting on a housing list two years ago as a success because we didn't even have a housing list two years ago, but the reality is while this woman waits for housing she desperately needs, her chances of going into housing get worse. We cannot pat ourselves on the back claiming success unless we look at the whole picture. This woman is dying and she may not make it another year. She is vulnerable.

As someone who is homeless and been couch surfing and about to go to the streets what you said at about the 46min mark is dead on! It's hard to trust people when even though they mean well the stuff promised never comes through and then programs get cut off and we feel like no matter what we do it never works out. Being disabled, homeless and having had so many betray me and my trust is very hard to keep going. Since there are no homeless shelters near me and the people in the community don't believe there are homeless in our community they just call the cops so can't stay around here. So I'm looking at having to hitch a ride 2 hours away from where I live to try to see if it's better there.

Being homeless is one of the hardest jobs in the world. I was homeless for 3 years and I know very well what you are describing. Being homeless makes a person very vulnerable. People will in fact prey upon you. Even when you find a place to live, if you live around the poor and they see you have gotten something they also will start keeping and eye on you and if you don't give them what they want they will go after you. Slum lords who pretend they're good people helping the poor are some of the most dangerous. I was just in a terrible situation with a slum lord and I cannot thank The Michigan Atty Generals office enough got stepping in and protecting me. The slum lord is a scam artist and if he comes after you for money, for no reason, and you don't pay up he has NO problem making sure he will destroy you. He WILL send you to a collection agency and they will go after your credit score to destroy you. He does it all the time. Been doing it for years. Man the stories I could tell. It's such a scary world out there.

    • @backdraft03bfd

      Chris F
That is a very good question. Many rural communities have very little help including churches. Many people turn there back to the people who are down and out.
I just saw an elderly couple living out of their campervan get arrested and their vehicle towed away for being homeless.

when i return to guam and do get a rental there i want to set up a food box/give and take stand if possible for people to grab and leave stuff for others in need. the housing part i dont know, that is a little tougher because you would have to section off a piece of your land for tenting and make sure its legal and safe for everyone involved.

    • @backdraft03bfd
      @backdraft03bfd 6 лет назад +4

      Chris F
You have to be very careful and check with the regulations in your area to make sure you can feed people cuz you can get in trouble for that. As for housing you can help set up a fundraiser to help the people of housing and then that's a good way to help people.

  • @mkl5448

One thing I always come back to when watching videos like this is, most people have others that can help. Friends, family, etc. It's pretty rare that people have nobody to turn to. Now, with that said, there has to be a want, and humility, to make that happen. I've just always been curious about this.

What Ryan, Goodwill and this community are doing just shows that as an organized group we can do so much more to help those in dire need. I'm impressed that the churches all came together to keep the safe harbor facility open. So often churches are given a bad rap with homeless advocates bashing them. As a Christian it offends me because I know many churches do so much good for the impoverished. Ryan and all the support of this community is a model for us to follow. When multiple groups come together they can do so much more and provide many needed services in an organized fashion. One other thing I found refreshing...Ryan is a humble soft spoken person who really gets the job done in an approachable way. We need more "Ryan's". He truly is a good man doing great works for others.

You are right, this is a model more churches should follow. Sadly, most churches are just a county club. As things like homelessness continue to get worse, I strongly believe it’s faith based groups working together to help their communities will be the solution.

You are amazing, so dynamic for creating awareness to the sad, taboo yet very real subject of homelessness , yet so caring and sensitive to the needs of the homeless, which many do not have. You show great respect, love and care and you are to be praised for your dedication. . Which areas are really affected in the US, as I live in England. You are also an inspiration, not just to me, as a human being but also infectious to others to create action and positive solutions to all affected. What can I do practically to help you, I can offer my fine writing skills, offer practical suggestions. I would just like some way in which to support you in achieving homes for all concerned,

California is really affected by homelessness. And the homeless, no matter how innocent, as in working, or seniors and disabled people, are treated like vermin and persecuted. The oligarchs oppose affordable housing. And believe that they can arrest themselves out of homeless issues. Instead of creating enough of a housing supply to end it .

You should take her to your quiet room at your church building together
Because this woman is not only feeling hopeless
    She is isolating herself
    PTSD
Get her into the heat before it is to late
    She has depression too

I am sure it was all Ryan could do to get her to meet him at a public location, like Taco Bell. She certainly wouldn't get into a car with him, or likely trust a cab on her own.
