Former Social Worker with a Master's Degree Homeless in Charlotte

- I joined Urban Ministry's outreach team looking for a homeless man in Charlotte, North Carolina. We drove to several locations, and the man was not in his usual spots. We saw a group of homeless people on the side of the road and stopped to ask if they knew they knew the man we were looking for.
Michelle approached the car and leaned in to inform us of the man we were looking for passed away a few days ago. Michelle spoke fondly of the homeless man. They were friends. Michele shared with a tear in her eye how the man passed away with money in his pocket and wearing new clothes. That thought made her happy. It was a moment that's hard to put into words. Michelle clearly had an understanding of the streets.
Michelle then went on to make a few suggestions to the outreach team. Allison, the outreach director, started taking notes. Turns out, Michelle is a former social worker with a masters degree. She had invaluable insight into life on the streets.
Michelle lost or job and then her apartment. Michelle's daughter went to go stay with her godmother while Michelle ended up on the streets homeless. She thought it would only be for a short period of time. That was almost two years ago.
Michelle is hurting. She is vulnerable. Although I was homeless myself, I can't imagine what Michelle has had to do to survive each and every day! My heart breaks for her because I know how hard the transition from the streets to a home can be. Because of the severe lack of affordable housing, It can take months and possibly years to get Michelle off the streets. That's where you come in.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Hospitals are scary places. How can we fully mobilize People Care? I have some savings and would be willing to donate 1K specifically towards that purpose, and towards Michelle helping facilitate that. I know that isn't a lot to start with, but it's something. Let me know how you'd like for me to do this. I can donate more as needed --- I'd like to keep a buffer of savings for myself and my dog but would be glad to donate up to three thousand more, to be used strategically.
Long as there is greed it ain't going to happen
@@dreameryoung38 You are very mistaken. We have to do things in spite of that. Otherwise, nothing is going to happen. Shit don't happen by sittin on our asses.
Mark, I went on and put the first sum through .tv. I want to support everything you are doing but/and really want to help get something additional started that is going to help create continuous, sustainable change. I hope that makes sense. If I earned enough I would donate the 24K that would help pay a year of 'salary.' My income has been fairly weak since 2014 and I'm currently paid by the hour w the work I do, and it fluctuates. Am committed to supporting this endeavor and would like to contribute the additional sum/s. Thought it might be good to space it out just a little.

Some of us are working and homeless....

Yea I mean thanks for the tip dude. Obviously

I pray that she isn’t living on the streets anymore. Such an intelligent woman.
Very intelligent and well spoken. We all can pray for the homeless. Give them food or a juice when u see them if u think they are gonna use the money for drugs. More and more people are becoming homeless when we need to help them with food and shelter. Its not a crime to be homeless its a crime not to help them. God bless.
I pray someone reach out to her give her shelter a job, reunite with her daughter, she's willing to work SOMEONE SHOULD PLS HELP HER WITH A REGULAR JOB.
How can someone help her if they wanted too
A also I used to wonder why some individuals that are homeless would refuse or turn down food as well. But I had to realize, just because they’re hungry doesn’t mean they’ll accept whatever comes across their face. I have dietary restrictions and they might as well. They may want what I’m giving them with every bone in their body but it may have cheese on it and they may be severely lactose intolerant. That’s a mild example but it could be a real one. “They” are not a different kind of people, they may have food allergies just like someone who isn’t homeless. I think it’s a good idea to maybe offer to buy them a meal instead.
So just intelligent people get special treatment. If you didn't have all these qualifications and degrees and papers, peope wouldnt be so nice. And thats proven fact.
This is an aspect of being a Social Worker people don't talk about. The extreme low pay and burn-out and sometimes even PTSD from the things they see working in the field. God bless her and I hope she can make it back on top, get her PhD and become a success story and help others do the same.
A PHD won't help you if it's not employed in services...

If anyone is interested... I just moved to Charlotte a week ago and saw Michelle on a corner during my lunch break today. She is still homeless, but still SUCH a bright personality and was so nice to talk to while I was waiting for the light to change. She's a good woman, you can see the kindness in her. She looked at me and said, "you know, I wasn't always like this and at one point I had it all. Don't ever take it for granted".
Wow, I’m sad she is still homeless 😞
Why is she not teaching? Every State has a shortage. I never heard her explain that. Please ask her

@@waydewatson5720 because there may be a level of mental capacity which is associated with acknowledgement or in denial thereof existence of a mental capacity, that this individual might be dealing with you as a social worker, why haven't you thought about that because I would say this here from my own life experience quote: Calvia Hill "sometime we're too close to a damn thing,we can't see a damn thing". This breaks my heart. I'm also a social worker with a master's degree. I was living in FL working two jobs and still couldn't make it. @@Thinks-First true!! People when they say they pray they want to say something without doing anything really. Just to feel better for themselves
@@pasdpasse439 That may or may not be true of those who pray. But it's ABSOLUTELY true of all the commenters who claim they "support" or "advocate" for antisocial people like the one in this video. Like you said, they want to pay lip service to make themselves feel good and virtue signal but they won't take these "victims" into their OWN homes with their OWN family and property. All phonies.
Most of them are drug addicts with mental illness. They need to become wards of the state and institutionalized. This would act as a deterrence to vagrancy and antisocial behavior.
These Pelosi-vills and Biden-vills are a drain and blight on society. Move them to THEIR home towns.
Most of us don’t realise how lucky, just how lucky we are.
well, it goes a little beyond luck. In the particular case of homelessness, the defining element is how close you are with your network of friends and relatives and how wealthy they may be. If this network is really strong, you may be as unlucky as to lose your home, but you'll never have to sleep in the streets or a shelter, because your friends and family will stand up for you. This is actually the defining element in putting you back on your feet. Just look at the situation most homeless people are in. Their primary network is made of other homeless people and government institutions. That's a recipe for disaster. When you have nobody (who really cares about you) to resort to, and at the same time, if you don't have anybody with a minimum of resources to resort to, you are doomed. In capitalism, government agencies and NGOs have an extremely limited ability to deal with a growing homeless population, because the priority of capitalism is to constantly elevate the price of housing. In capitalism, every day that goes by, each homeless person is farther and farther away from being able to afford housing. And I'm not even starting to talk about minimum wage, which is the 2nd or some times the 1st cause of homelessness, together with mental health..
No not luck but Blessed 🙏
Until it happens to you. We live in a awful capitalist society. Basic housing is a human right. It’s only four walls. Don’t make it out to be much more. Homelessness is created
BLESSED we are 🙏🏾
Lucky enough to look for a job? or get hired?
This person who's going through a real struggle every day is 100 times more qualified to be a social worker than most of the drones currently occupying those positions.
Why? Still no chold should be homeless, hungry or go without air or heat(in certain climates where there is extreme weather) and no child should be abused period
Shorya Cione no one should be abused. It’s capitalism. It’s money, it’s ego or being better than others somehow equates to self worth. When we reach a point in which we already have, that a program of thought, that can actually dehumanize others, this is the time to consider what intelligence actually is, or isn’t. Critical thought is almost, if not arbitrary. In other words, do white People get their sense of self based on the trials and tribulations of “other” you’re damn right the most unintelligent do.. they live for the illusion. People need to stand up more and have more of a voice when it comes to things that don’t really make sense. And if not for the “other” than for yourself
I agree that she would be a wonderful social worker but calling others names who are out there trying to help others for shit pay makes you a drone 😡
I agree 100 %
Cecilia reinheimer exactly. Ppl don’t become social workers to be drones, the system drains all the empathy and compassion out of these helpers until they’re nothing but an empty shell.
So far everything this woman has said is true. I grew up with a single mother who had 8 kids. We lived in tents, cars, homeless camps, sometimes shelters. My mom wasn’t on drugs, she had mental health issues and was paranoid along with a few bad decisions following her.
It took so much therapy for me to understand that even though I was raised that way I am equal to others.
It’s so difficult to make ends meet and then when rent goes up they have no where to go.
Michelle is welcome to come here to my farm in Colorado. If u see this Michelle, I have a large home, and an animal sanctuary.. you are more than welcome to come here abd get on your feet. My daughter in law is in the masters program in social work.

Many people who don't have wealth are willing to help others, but the ones with the wealth never wants to help.
Ppl help “up”. Ppl generally don’t help “down” unless they are enlightened. This is the result of a crappy social safety net and exploitative labor system. This is not a meritocracy
This is not true. Millionaires on average donate way more money to charity than poor people do. Problem is if the political system is broken then it doesn't matter how many billions you put into charity, the result will still be the same.

It is scary to think that a lot of homeless people have family members who could potentially provide housing, at least temporarily, until they can get back on their feet, and yet... they are homeless 😞
It’s not family responsibility to make sure a person manages their money correctly most Americans buy things they don’t need like new clothes every couple of months which isn’t needed clothes that was previously bought can still be worn new cars instead should be putting whatever little money that is left over after pay household bills in a saving account if more people do this then they wouldn’t be homeless because I practice this my husband & I were ok during COVID because of my rainy day fund
I became to homeless due to a layoff and it's definitely NOT a family's responsibility to house you. And to be quite frank I didn't want to do that. My relationship with my family is far from ideal. Plus there are other things to consider, your family may be 3,000 miles away. I am no longer homeless but I never expected anyone to take me in. I got through it. God had my back.
@@DanaeLaurenTolbert1 what is family for if they can’t take you in. Some of y’all Americans are not family oriented at al. In some underdeveloped countries you don’t see much homeless people because their family would take them in unless they maybe had a mental illness’s even that the family will be there for them and try to help them sought treatment and not be on the street. The dynamics in some American family is not not, each man for himself crap. There is no sense of community or family. I am not saying let your family members keep mooching off off you but at least take them in temporarily let them sleep on your couch at night while trying to find a job or do better rather than stay out on the streets or a homeless shelter full of strangers some of which can be dangerous
@@moonlightandstaryeyesbestr6061 I agree with you. The mentality people have that family is not supposed to help scares me. I think it’s a lot due to not having a strong healthy relationship between family members, both parents work, living a lot of times far from the grandparents. I grew up with grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and even people from church were like family, I would call my mom’s friends aunts and their children I still say they are my cousins. I know that if I needed to stay living with one of them for a week or two or even longer in some cases I would be able to and they with me.
@@moonlightandstaryeyesbestr6061 Well this is not a perfect world and everyone doesn't have that option or want to take that option. This was even explained by the author of this channel. Until you a have been homeless you wouldn't understand. You are speaking from a naive, idealistic Brady Bunch/Cosby Show perspective. However, it is NOT everyone's reality. Living life with the expectation that family or close friends are obligated to cater to you when life throws you lemons enables you. In addition, it develops a sense of entitlement, causes one wallow in self pity, as well as build resentment/bitterness. Speaking from my experience, I am glad I didn't have that nor did I expect to be taken in. It forced me to rely solely on God. He is my everything not people (family, close friends, whomever). If I didn't go through any of this I wouldn't have seen the flaws in the shelter system. If I didn't see the tremendous flaws in the shelter system, I wouldn't of created my businesses that provide REAL help to homeless singles. As stated earlier, I am glad I became homeless and didn't get taken in by family. Life's lemons allows me to produce a beautiful refreshing gallons of lemonade. I discovered my calling and purpose. I LOVE what do. I'm still in the process of creating more assistance. It may sound crazy or corny even. But my clients, who are homeless like I previously was, share the same perspective I do. I don't depend on human beings my source comes from God alone. He gets all the credit and the glory.

I can never understand why in Europe they have public baths and public facilities but in America, unless you have money, you have to shit in the street and forget about being clean.

Carlton Poindexter Depends where you are in America.
JoJoe MC AMERICAN GREED destroyed it
@JoJoe MC what about corporate wealthfare? The fire department is socialism... schools, police... all socialism... maybe you are thinking of something else? A middle class does not naturally occur in capitalism, it is an artificial creation based on government policy (ie: socialism) and economic policy. for me it was a waste of time. although i loved all those art classes. there is no need for college now when you can take online courses and get certification. some things are happening too fast and colleges are too far behind already. like marketing for instance. companies are in need of digital marketers and that is real money. i was a graphic designer and that career path was going nowhere. once i saw the company lay off the creative director, an art director and hire young copywriters and focus on social media i knew i had to do something. many of my coworkers are stuck in their rut and won't ever get near 100K. my whole life i focused on the hundreds i had in my bank account, not the thousands. i saw my chance to get out so i did.

This woman is an example 💯 for all to understand we are nothing....I mean noooo body without each other. Human-beings need one another so we can take off. We never born with wings so we need that elevation.
People care is what we need. Brilliant woman.
She is so correct. I WAS ALWAYS ONE PAYCHECK AWAY from being homeless for years raising my girls. I know her pain, after losing my home12 years ago, my state of mind was very fragile. Now I have to live with one of my daughters. No matter how much I have or don't have, God has so far allowed me to have something to help. I pray she has been safe, her relationship with her daughter is well and she is doing well.
I was a single dad for 15 years. Not much money. I refused to be homeless. 😎

She needs to write a book, Homeless with a Masters Degree.
Exactly
I need to write a book. Never Been homeless with barely a high school diploma. She should have gotten a master's degree in how to survive.
I wanted to be a sociologist also. I remember loving the sociology class I took. I spoke to my sociology teacher and she told me it was a horrible idea because her generation was pushed into sociology due to it being a field that needed people. Since many people entered the field, the profession is over-saturated with people. She said, it's difficult getting a job in the field and the pay is low. She said if I am really passionate then make sure I get a doctorate because anything lower will be less than competitive.
I'm sure her situation is worse because she is a woman and she is black. If she has an ethnic name, that will make her chances even worse. One thing I learned is, public service jobs don't pay.

High and very...?? She doesn't tell us why she lost her job or why she lost her apartment. Seems like she's blaming it on other people. Was she living beyond her means? Did she have issues on the job..perhaps attitude since she claims she wasn't being paid what she was worth (racism is in there somewhere)...if you want to help this woman, you need to know exactly what went wrong. No one with a Master's Degree is a victim. A person can be intelligent and educated and still have psychological issues, you know. Also, God blessing her isn't going to help at all.

Back in 1983, My father, who I was working for at the time, got into an argument with my ex wife and, over a period of 3 days kicked us out of the house we were living in and fired me from my job at a business he owned. At the time, we had 3 little boys, ages 5, 3 & 1. We had a tent, so we went into the desert and pitched it. We told the kids we were going to be camping for a while. They were so happy and excited. I was able to get a job with an office. Outside of my office there was a faucet. Every morning, around 5:00 am we would wake the kids, drive from the desert into the town where my office was. Each of us would bath in the hose outside of my office and hurry to get done before anyone came around. We would eat fast food, bbq when we could and really make the best of it. Sometime when it was really hot, we would sneak into my office, lock the doors and sleep on the floor. With the air conditioning on it gave us a sense of good. It made us feel like we weren't homeless. All these years later, our kids are grown. My 2nd wife and I have been married 23 years. We have a boy and a girl ages 15 and 13. We've lived in the same house for 21 years. We paid our house off about 6 years ago. I've never forgotten the experience, homelessness is an experience. And with a young family, it's an experience Like wouldn't wish on anyone. But, if you hold your head up, never give up, you can get out of it. To this day, my boys still think we were camping. We always made it fun. Good bless those who are homeless. If you read this and need a hand reach out to me, maybe I could helped you. My email is alohapressurewash@gmail.com

I've found many job counselors diminish efforts such as Kept Good order for child with Adhd..during a divorce.. keeping the home pleasant with Leg numbness and a husband wanting to spend time with his games and boyfriends. That was not anything. I did Rehabilitation with persons with Brain Injuries. Could I do that if I wasnt truly committed to Others succeeding? I highly doubt it. University and college..got played down if I wasnt Currently studying another area. Children and adults were where I applied behavioural and life enhancing strategies, with genuine efforts and heart..clients were not coerced to suit my career checklists. ( degree knowledge doesnt stand alone). Knowing I have to hold my actions under the microscope wasnt hard when I did consistent steps toward the People and their challenges. They can tell anyone I did have to Push them when they were sticking with Doing nothing. They knew I didnt give up on them. Years of being in teams..got diminished by persons in positions to I'm not doing that anymore, including husband in his tech focussed world and gaming platforms. Real people..not seen as worth investing in? Toxic thinking that Helping lives isnt worth doing..is truly deplorable in its mindsets of conquer by competition. Discounting well balanced Values and Streamlining I lived to Be that community support worker..is no respect to Vision building. I kept in what I built my knowledge on. Human development..and the abnormal forces wanting to make it be something it's not ( we are not machines without conscience..not able to brush people off as Nobody.s). Current theories ensue we can be doing more..That displaces relational patterns which Are meant to keep cohesive groups going forward. Aka..value driven and conscience balancing Groups. Every person faces times when much does not go as one intended ( good actions were done with good faith). I faced homelessness..though working. The couples w 2 incomes got chosen over my 1 income. I had to budget and put up with lazy bf liking the comforts. My son gets free..bfs with no conscience get nothing. He was an engineer ( status he can do less for Knowledge of math?) Applications were not adding up in finances reflective of said knowledge. I worked my plan and it achieved a home and child focussed wellness. Add city evicting people for redundant bylaws..where other higher income earners rent and fail to follow bylaws? It's outright disparity claiming the $ are the only bottom line that weighs in. Sorry for those with lesser consciences..spoiling just lawful practices with They can push for doing less quality, simply because they own a home. They dont realize value is in people who do keep high standards of accountability. I had injuries..paid my costs. As though no person has downswings while also giving their best to many in need. I speak to anyone who understands coping w setbacks. Never expected setbacks..my personal conviction was to get well and maintain my efforts. Ex loved to create bad stories I was not responsible..living alone w a son. Funny..ex didn't want help..why was his gf living in his place..not paying half the rent either? She wanted ex to cover sons room..and she did the least possible. Funny how Doing less gets exalted. Btw..she moved out. My son wasnt impressed with her attitude she did so much. Non wives get great regard..but get No onus put on them to care or keep to values. Results confirm less is not adding to Standards of Virtues. Truth is perseverance in the face of illogic. I may be w paychecks away from homelessness..but I know I must hold my line. Idiots talking pleasures..can be observed sponging off Gov.mt and multiple Agencies. All free is what they have settled into. I know that's not earning one s way with merit for efforts. Social worker shamed..is a horrible representation of her colleagues ( advocates for people?) Dis their own is obvious Selfish viewing that Nothing like that will happen to them. Now we see Biz owners..hat in hand. Sure hope they werent all high and mighty to folks with challenges in their lives. Humility works best when it's done Regardless of Success. Am beyond disappointed in Heartless people thinking they re secure. Let that go..see people for the wealth inside.

With her credentials she should be able to find a job no problem instead of waiting for a handout. What use is an education if not be employed in services? My grandmother worked 52 years, finally only recently retired at 93. Started renting when her husband passed away in 1995, sold the house, she saved her money to pass down to her children's children, instead of pissing it away with loose living. Their home was spotless, but then again they both have lived through the Great depression and understood the pissing away money is foolish or expecting handouts for free. The Gospel of Christ makes it clear, if you can't provide for yourself you've denied the faith and have become worse then an unbeliever. 1Tim 5:8

This woman is very humble. She has a heart of gold without blaming or holding others accountable. She has owned-up to her situation without entitlement. This video is as raw and as real as you can get. I feel her pain, her struggle. And her dignity as a human being. These are the personal struggles of the homeless America does not see. And turns a blind eye as the crises continues to get worse. The day to day struggles for survival many of us would not last a day. We are so privileged in America we take our standard of living and what wealth - if any - for granted. We cannot treat people less than subhuman if we are to thrive together as a republic. I share both your pain and warmth in your heart in you're struggle to move forward. There is goodness and greatness in you. This is just temporary. Things will get much better.

I was there, only I was staying in a shelter, so it probably wasn't "as bad". However, I was a cashier, so I remember having to fake that smiling face and pretend that I was ok, going to bed hungry. I remember getting written up for being 5 minutes late because I couldn't have people pick me up from the shelter and couldn't drive... I was walking in ice and snow. I told my supervisor my situation and they didn't care.
Yes, been there too. No joke at all. Thanks to the most high.
Xo Xo 😔
She's been blacklisted.
It’s like hearing about “a bank of well needed resources “, untouched, unused when others need them. I’m seeing this when we are in the middle of a pandemic, where the mentally ill, the disenfranchised are hurting even more...This beautiful lady with all her experience and training could greatly help......
Thank you for this post.....It’s so informative.....Causes one to think.....Perhaps.......!!!
