Los Angeles Homeless Man talks Rats and Police Sweeps

- When I asked Norman how long he has been homeless, Norman responded he can't remember but thinks it's about six years. Norman lives on the sidewalk in Harbor City, a highly diverse neighborhood in the Harbor region of Los Angeles, California. Norman shares about how rats have driven out of his homemade shack. The noise from the cars and trucks driving by is constant. Norman says you get used to it. People adapt to living outside. He went on to say that homelessness has taken him to another layer to understanding a human being can survive no matter what the conditions are as long as there is oxygen and water. No one should have to live like this.
In Harbor City, police and sanitation sweep the area every three weeks. Norman understands cleaning for health reasons, but when LAPD takes all of their belongings, it forces homeless people to start from scratch again. It's rare to the point of almost never happening that services are provided. Homeless sweeps just confiscate people's stuff. Norman says they take their tents, their blankets - everything they have - forcing them to start over. Norman adds "if you are going to clean us out, help us."
The City of Los Angeles has increased street cleaning and sanitation services for homeless encampments over the past three to five years. The City has done so with an emphasis on criminalization, harassment, and removal of people and their belongings, instead of taking a health-based approach to ensuring safe and clean streets for all. In 2019, LA's budget allocated $30 million to homeless sweeps, which do nothing to end homelessness and are a waste of taxpayer money.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

They did that in Rochester and buffalo it really makes me livid. Nowhere else can they take your property and throw it out it's still your property even if your homeless how is that legal to throw your stuff out? They barely have anything anyway why would they do that to the poor homeless people that's not tolerable to throw their stuff out!
I have and will continue to advocate for this cause because it definitely needs to be fixed. I myself although not homeless (yet) am facing a similar situation at the moment due to no fault of my own and I receive an income but can’t afford what’s out there right now . It’s exactly how older and disabled people (like myself) become homeless. There is no recourse and ppl only care about dredging every penny they can from decent hardworking individuals who paid into the sates and federal entities their whole life to be tossed aside like trash . This is everywhere and more definitely needs to be done . If only those that hold all the power would grow a conscience and felt some sort of empathy that’d be a start .
@@LetArtsLive likewise they ticket these people endlessly knowing they could not possibly pay. This creates warrants. They do this as part of their way to get them to move on and away from their communities. Why else would they ticket homeless people? Our government is a joke and as long as their pockets are lined and they have a clean fresh bed and pillow to lay their heads at night they will continue to not give a damn . The homeless population will continue to grow and die alone out on the streets.

i saw a news video a day ago where tiny mini homes were being built for homeless by nonprofit group to help stop the homeless living in bad condition tents but, the middle class neighbors of the community protest against it due to worrying their neighborhood value will go down... its really a shame...
1) they have strict regulations to stay on those homes. These homeless people won't stay there. Same reason they don't go to current shelters. There's rules.
2) those tiny homes and tents always go up in flames. It's the reality of it.
3) it does devalue the neighbourhood and increase crime rates.
This is just reality. Like it or not.
RUclipsr 'German In Venice' toured a new tiny "home" community in L.A. recently. It costs $100,000 per resident to run! For a metal dog shed!
That's what happens, in a system that mainly favors some, but not others. Some of those 'some', will then have problems when it gets to helping those others later, due to having become used to the sense of 'privilege' from the resulting inequities. The US has already practiced some of that with 'race', now it's easier to do with simply housed vs unhoused, as there's not that historical stigma attached, yet at least.
Ya, if you have tiny home or camper trailer (the original tiny house) it's difficult to find a place to put it- restrictions, zoning ordinances ... the basis of all these rules is discrimination.

The political will. How often have I heard that one term, political will. I seriously doubt that California, and the country has any of the above ! The money has always been there. It's just that it's always being stolen. By the politicians and the oligarchy who back them. And shelters are beyond evil. They make money off the homeless people they warehouse.

Unfortunately our country is in such a state of disrepair that people like Norman have to live like this. My heart goes out to him. Our tent city dealt with the rats by feeding them…away from the camp. If we fed them away from the camp, they stayed over there where there were no people to have to deal with them and it kept our tent city clean and comfortable.

Why can't we just help each other... I did something... It was small... But i probably saved lives today considering we have very high temperatures here...
You have two resources. Time and Money. If you dont have one you have the other. You can volunteer at a homeless shelter, mission or food pantry. If you dont have means to get to one of those to give your time you can call them as see if you can make calls on homeless peoples behalf to find temporary shelters. When you find an open spot you call them back and someone with transportation can take them there. You can find out what clothing homeless people need from them then make calls to locals business and see what they can donate (out of season jackets, clearanced rain coats, open packages of underwear or sock). If you have a car you take homeless people to shelters in extreme heat or cold, take them to doctors appointment (a veteran or someone on social security has insurance), or to the grocery store to use their food card

This is a very well-spoken, intelligent gentleman. He sounds like a very genuine, goodhearted and kind person too. People often make negative assumptions about ALL homeless people that just aren't true. Some of the most beautiful, kind, intelligent people have had a cascade of traumas throughout their lives that have left them deeply wounded. Many of these people have suffered due to circumstances beyond their control, and have somehow endured and survived things that go way beyond normal human coping limits. And then they find themselves living out in the cold and the rain, without housing. However, this does not make them one bit less-than or less human than a sheltered person. These people have much more strength and have survived more horrific traumas than the average, "housed" person can even begin comprehend. And they have a lot to offer, in both their stories of survival and in their strength of spirit. A little empathy goes a long way.
All the people you interview are such beautiful people - cracks me up to see them go through such traumatic times

So well spoken and conveyed.
Purposely destroying their camps and belongings is tyranny. There should be safe encampments, at least. And a "shelter" isn't the answer. The poor will always be with us.
I still remember the story of a woman who was working at a KFC who was fired when they learned that she was homeless. They ended up hiring her back when the story went public and the company was shamed for their actions. Clearly, they didn't think that she looked homeless when they hired her. What companies will hire someone without an address, a place to sleep and shower, etc.? Even if you look clean and well dressed, there is a stigma against hiring people without homes. People need resources to get housed and then they can focus on the next step towards employment. Our country is not a great country if we can't do that for our most vulnerable citizens.
Too many politicians with their hand in the till
Brainwashing is a good word for that they don't seem to get it
Seems like a nice guy. The homeless situation is the same here in the UK. Our government and local councils approach is, go into a shelter and apply for council housing. A lot of homeless people don't want to go into a shelter, like this guy said.

I agree with you guys about housing being the most important thing to help fix homelessness. I think tiny homes are the solution. They're cheap, small, quick and easy to build and a bunch can be put on one lot. The state needs to buy up abandoned parking lots, clean them up and install a bunch of tiny homes. They can have communal bathrooms and dumpsters just like a campground. These people can become homeowners of their little lots and homes and pay yearly property tax on them so that uncle sam can get his fair share too. If they're unable to pay their property tax then they should be given the option to enroll in a program that will pay it for them until they can themselves.

The Politicians mostly care about the Politicians and those who are financially well adjusted. The people who can really make a difference in this homeless crisis that's been going on for years and years, do very little. Like this nice man said, "where is this money for homelessness going ?" What he says is an eye opener. Unfortunately, this Politicians are going to continue closing their eyes and ears to really helping this homeless epidemic.
The money is diverted and stolen, by agencies, developers, and politicians and their administrators,, but they do count on people being passive and indifferent, content with the stairs quo. Take the money AWAY from the agencies, and put it all into apartments and duplexes. Five people die each day in L.A. County.
