  • Karla is homeless in San Diego, "America's Finest City." I really enjoyed talking to Karla. She is full of life and she shared important insights into homelessness. At 11:52 in her interview, Karla walks us through a day in the life of a homeless woman in San Diego
    A Day in the Life
*You're up at 5am Every Day; otherwise, you'll be ticketed for sleeping on a sidewalk.
*Then you have to run and stand in line at the day center for two hours because only the first 15 people in line receive all of the services like laundry and showers.
*Day Center opens at 6: 30am, but staff doesn't arrive until 8am. So you stand in line waiting.
*Men can shower at 8: 30am; Women can shower at 9:30am. But the showers are two blocks away. So you store your stuff, walk two blocks to get your shower, then come back to get your stuff.
*At 10am, you have to go stand in line for food or you'll never get a plate.
*In the afternoon, there are a few hours to take all of your belongings to storage then go to the library. At the library, you can charge your phone, and possibly get computer access to look for employment and contact family. Most libraries limit access to 45 minutes.
*At 4: 30 pm, the day center has closed and the storage facility is about to close. If you have not picked up your possessions from the day center, they will place everything by the side of the road, and people will go through it. The priority is getting to your storage to get what you need for the evening.
*It's now 6pm. You put your stuff in the space where you feel safe to sleep and now you have to go find dinner. The choices are to stand in a food line or, in some parts of town, people will drive by and give out food.
*You cannot set up your tent or sleeping bags until after 9pm or otherwise, you'll be ticketed by police or go to jail.
Homeless people do not get a day off.
There are no vacation days. There are no sick days or personal leave. Homeless people in every city have to go through this type of routine just to survive each and every day. If you don't, something bad will happen.
Someday, Karla would like to walk across the country to bring awareness to the issues of homelessness in America. She says there is a large group of people who believe homeless people are all drug addicts or lazy.
Karla explains homeless people often start using drugs simply to survive. "Many people are drug addicts because they don't want to sleep. They don't want to get raped, they don't want to get mugged, they don't want their stuff stolen. They are scared to sleep. People don't choose drugs over jobs and housing."
She also talks about the insanity of credit score requirements for low-income housing. Karla walks us through how her own credit situation snowballed after her husband had to take a severe pay cut when the company he worked for merged with another company.
She closes with three wishes: her children to have what they need; a roof over her and her husband's head; and the ability to get others to understand what's going on in the world - compassion is more important than status.

The vlog puts into context one of our nation's most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America's homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.

Betty Harrison What an ugly act, taking my kindness, my feelings and turning them into something hateful. You know NOTHING about me. I go into homeless camps, and bring them what I can to help them. I sit and listen to them. Really, they just want people to see them as human beings. I don’t have a lot of money myself, but I give what I can. And really, the greatest gift you can give a person is kindness.... please think before you start spewing hate. There’s already too much of it in this world.

@Betty Harrison really? I would of thought seeing more homeless in the local area would be an indication of higher rents.
Higher rental properties and their landlords/landladies need people with good stable well paid jobs.
Have noticed an increase in rents over say the past 18 months?

You're absolutely right and the city unless they're making money somehow that's what the problem is if someone's not making money so the answer is here's the building people and she could be the leader and organizer and you drop off the materials let them be self-sufficient and have a place so they have an address so they have a phone number a bathroom and go get a job cuz when you're worried about your s*** you know are you going to go look be successful looking for work probably not but yes I get so tired of the government not listening cuz the government's just for the damn government and that's all there is if they don't think we see that they're blind as a bat have a good day you are God bless

Whatever got them there, it is obvious that any help available, is not reaching the masses, and therefore keeping them destitute & without shelter. This epidemic is not privy to the US alone. I live in Toronto and since I was a child I've been told, by my single mom of 3, that homeless people are just like us. (We were getting our groceries from food banks and churches. Sometimes I would steal food at 8 years old for us, I would put packs of chicken in my backpack and then buy a chocolate bar). We would stop and give products and talk to the homeless, even though we didnt have much. 20 years later my family is secure but I still feel what these homeless people feel. My mom and I now volunteer constantly to give back, boxing at food banks, serving food at the shelter, donating clothes directly to homeless and every Christmas we raise money to get hundreds of gloves, socks, hats etc. The smallest thing makes the largest difference. I found your channel a couple months ago and been making more of an effort to have a conversation. Last week I met Ricardo, he was a vet, we talked for 20 mins. I gave him whatever i could from my purse (gum, kleenex packages, some change and tampons for his girlfriend) . Thank you for doing what you do.

I almost became homeless 3 years ago. Fled an abusive family, moved, ended up long-term unemployed with no income. I was middle class and hit extreme poverty until I found a downwards mobility, poverty wage job. I’m not uneducated, I speak 2 languages, and I don’t consider myself dumb but I am working poor. This lady is a champion for the poor! Of course, there’s a war on those in need all over this nation. All this revitalization but those most in need are being pushed out. Greed and corruption abounds this nation! Empathy is something people need to relearn these days. If you’ve been blessed enough to never endure hardship in life, consider yourself lucky! We can all do better as a nation to help those most in need. As a nation we’re rich in money but extremely poor in compassion, understanding, and empathy. We’re morally bankrupt in this nation and greedy. There are plenty of employed people who have massive addictions, the only thing that makes them different from the poor, money! When money is worshipped as God, we are all in for a rude awakening!

Yes,very true the only difference is that the rich have money to cover the fact that they have many addictions! They can keep themselves up with healthy food, nice clothes ,hygiene, good rest and what not !...They spend as much as they want selfishly without no guilt or interruptions! ...Not that they don't work for what they need but what they want is the problem ! It is written, we are not our own and bought with a price ! The blessed materialistically should be a reflection of Jesus to those that are lost and or suffering ! It's deeper then believing and confessing he is Lord !...To believe is to also believe everything written!( his doctrine)The Lord requires us to do his will here as it is in heaven,we have to do the works of Jesus ! The selfish/evil rich( not all that are rich) continue with no fear,no fear not even of god, because the reality is in their minds their money is their god ! When money becomes a god to a people, they have no need to pray or to really "know"the true god our creator Jesus Christ,! In their minds money is the answer to all things and nothing else. ....They have nothing lacking materialistically but infact are uncompassionate, unmerciful, hypocritical, judgmental,in other words poor in spirit ! EXACTLY. IF you're lucky enough to have a spot a a shelter or to have a shower much less to properly store your meager possessions be able to be clean And wear clean clothes...let's take about using a bathroom. Especially with businesses clothes even when open, they see even a clean cut homeless person and are rude or call the cops...it's wrong. Let's not forget as a female when it's that time of the month. Not only needing hygiene products but being able to get to a bathroom and shower even half the AMT time people get use who have a home
I promise every little detail done for homeless is appreciated beyond belief. All things ppl take for granted one doesn't take for granted. Waking up another day. Waking up without being assisted or murdered or raped or messed with by cops or ppl.
Shelters also rise you up n out at 530 am with only a sink and toilets available no showers or towels and even if you have somewhere open they don't welcome the ppl from the shelters as they are close by even if they buy food or something they make them leave
Tell me where one goes at five A.M in the WINTER TIME EVEN BEFORE THE SUN IS UP?

Tell the solution, please! It’s easy to point out problems but it’s the solution we really need to hear. It’s easy to say to just give them housing but that doesn’t work as many/most have mental health issues. Many states have tried everything you can think of and it just doesn’t work. Look at LA, they gave everyone a place and it’s worse now than ever. Someone has to pay for all of this.. if you live in California you’re lucky to keep 48% of your paycheck already, trying to pay for this. You have to make $100k a year here to live worse off than a homeless person that is being helped by the state. Please, tell us the solution! Please!

There’s an absolute war on the homeless and also a thinning down of the lower socioeconomic class. At the same time minimizing the middle class to lower income by making it harder to stay in that income bracket. Big business and the government are in this together. I’m sure if they could get away with something more drastic and inhumane that they would certainly do so!

Downtown San Diego has DEFINITELY changed since 1994 but as a whole its HUGE like LA, the county goes all the way out into the desert! Walking across the country on foot might have been a lot more footloose and fancy free in the 70s but not in this day in age.
