Austin Homeless Man Shares on Addiction, Prison, and Depression

- If we are going to end homelessness, we must house everyone. We cannot pick who is worthy or unworthy of housing. HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT, or it should be. I want you to like Martin, but I know some of you won't get past parts of his story. Martin shares openly and honestly about addiction, depression, prison, and homelessness.
Martin is homeless in Austin, Texas. His story is long. Martin rambles a little. He is a methamphetamine addict. Before you judge, I was a meth addict too. Meth and heroin are the perfect drugs to escape the pain of trauma and homelessness. I am sure many of you are thinking addiction is the cause of homelessness, and it can be; however, the vast majority of the 40 to 52 million people struggling with mental illness or substance use disorders don't experience homelessness.
I first met Martin three years ago. Martin agreed to an interview, but he started to get emotional and stopped. So, out of respect to Martin, I never posted the video. I didn't know until this interview that Martin was going through a severe depression. Shortly after we first met, Martin jumped off a bridge to kill himself. Two police officers saw what they thought was a bag floating down the river. When they realized it was a person, they jumped in and saved Martin's life.
Martin spent 25 years in prison. I don't know what he did. It must have been awful to get that much time. But, for me, it doesn't matter what Martin did. He is no longer in prison. Martin has always treated me with respect. Since he has been out, even as a meth user, Martin has stayed out of trouble except for getting tickets for being homeless.
When I first met Martin, he told me that he would never go into housing. Martin actually changed my thinking. I once believed everyone would go into housing, but people who have done hard time don't want to be in a box.
People change. Martin is doing much better mentally, and he now wants to go inside. Martin's story is important. He went into prison at 19, and he says 25 years later, when he was released, he was still just 19-years-old. You can judge Martin and others all you want, but it still doesn't change the fact that exiting people from incarceration to homelessness is wrong. Even if you don't have a heart, as taxpayers, we pay huge money for every homeless person outside. Housing people saves lives and saves money. Our criminal justice system must provide some kind of support for people when they leave jail or prison.
Martin went into prison at a young age. Inside, you cannot show emotion. You have to be tough or your life will become harder than it already is. There are times in this interview Martin lets down his wall to show his kind soul. As I said, I don't know what he did nor do I care. The Martin I met is doing the best he can to survive life after prison. I hope Martin gets into housing soon.

If you fall on hard times, get sick or have a family tragedy you can spiral downwards very fast. We should not judge. I'm a 62 year old RN, spent a few years homeless and living outside due to cancer and getting fired in a small town. No family. After a year of living outside and spending every day in the library applying for jobs and learning new skills I picked myself up. got a place to live, and am still currently indoors and working. Most people all want the same things- safety, a bit secure, food, water, shelter and cleanliness. What is so excessive like this.

Oh but I do, it's a bunch of bull crap. I am homeless and don't drink or do drugs. And I'm 58 years old had my backpack stolen while I was asleep which had all my diabetes and heart meds in it and I can't find shelter living like an animal. While all these losers who don't want to work and have a gd roof over their heads with food and showers and beds to sleep in. Total bs....
I spent a lot of time with Marty while I was on the streets in Austin. We had many long talks, and we looked out for each other. Let me tell you guys, he is stubborn as a mule, but a decent man. Watching this made me understand a lot of why I did the things I did just to get through the days. The summers are miserably hot! And that winter storm was a beast in a tent. But Marty is a good man, who made a terrible mistake when he was just a kid. But to all of those who walk past them and snub your nose as though they are lesser....Know that most of you are just one paycheck from being there too. Though I am housed, and have been for a year now, being out there really f-ed up my head. It is a difficult thing to get through.....Be kind.....You don't have to give money, but at least acknowledge your fellow man......

This guy is so wise. The things we go through, the things we have trouble dealing with and our mistakes do not dictate our worth as a human being. All of the systems are broken by design. God bless him.

Ok, this is a pertinent conversation. Some of us were abused in a way that we also cannot be held in a closed space, need a way out, even if in a 'home or apt'. Can't be surrounded by alot of people, like parking lot tiny homes. That's why homeless is better, alot of times. Living in the wilderness in a car or van. It's safety, until you get attacked.
Geez. People need be more compassionate.
And some of us never hurt anyone, aren't on drugs or alcohol, just want a space where people aren't trying to use or control us.

He looks like a wise, well spoken, friendly and educated person. A beautiful soul. I wish him all that he ever wanted in life, to come through for him, all the peace, the love, the comfort and all that he has missed in life. Thank God, that his attempt to commit suicide was unsuccesful.
People in struggle are the ones I want to speak to. Their ego has left and they’re authentic souls. I’ve been through it myself and getting my life back. Praying for this genuine man.

I'm from Austin and where I work they do sweeps under this bridge literally every Monday morning and it's so tragic. And now people are having to sleep in the cactus bushes... It's horrible

@@powderandpaint14 get into rehab as many times as it takes, seek on going mental health therapy group or singular that would be a good start, many homeless people stay in denial of their life situation and surround themselves with other like minded people who are addicts making their daily life so much more " normal" for them, if they live that way change never comes
@@nightfangs2910 but the thing is they go through rehab and then they get out with no-where to go and end up back on the streets where it's very hard to stay clean.
@@powderandpaint14 yep, I agree the system as a whole has become an all for profit business from the homeless shelters to the drug rehabs etc. but bottom line if you don't find a way out and stay relentless to get and stay off the streets you will die out there, you have to do whatever it takes to make it happen
@@nightfangs2910 that's a hell of a lot of responsibility to put on very vulnerable people. If there could be could be more sober living places for then to go to after rehab a lot more people would be successful long term, so why not do that.
Los Angeles county jail is worst than prison. I’m sober 20 years and homeless 11 years. I do my best to deal with my mental illness. Always praying 🙏…

It seems paranoid, but I understand. After going to prison it is easy to feel like everything can be taken from you and everyone is against you. I spent just 20 months in prison and when I finally came home, I couldn't sleep or eat for 3 days because I was worried the feds would try to arrest me again, even though there would be no reason for it.

The landlord income requirements are worse than he says. In Austin, what landlords typically require is that you make three times the amount of the rent to be considered as a resident, so to rent a $700-dollar-a-month place (an almost unheard-of bargain for Austin), you'd be required to make at least $2,100 dollars a month to even be considered for a place, and that's the norm throughout Austin, many other places, too. It is messed up.
Austin is my home, born and raised there.
Unfortunately, cost of living in Austin has gone up to extremely high prices. It's really sad to see. I've been calling in Austin, CA now. 😬
Raleigh NC the same,you have to make 3x the amount for rent.
If there is an organization to provide homeless individuals with no interest car loans below 10k for 5 years, their expense for living inside a 10k car will be less than 200 a month.
with thick sleeping bags, this could provide a viable way to get through hard times.
Austin was so gentrified so quickly, I became homeless there too. And it was because a drunk driver with 8 felonies nearly killed, and permanently disabled me, as I was driving home from work. Austin and Texas left me to be homeless on the streets, telling me I didn't qualify for any help as a woman disabled by violent crime.
This man is a very humble genuine man nothing phony about him he doesn’t pretend to be nice like a lot of people do he’s a man with a story the people hurting the most are usually the most compassionate and loving people in this so cruel world

Prayer feels good, but it only helps yourself.
Personally i prefer to help people through more physical acts. Buying them food, offering a shower or getting them medical help, listening.. stuff like that.
If god exists, he already knows about our issues. And since he's all powerful, he obviously doesn't care to interfere. Otherwise things would be different yeah? If he exists, he's not stepping in. I think he gave us this existance and its up to us to shape the world and our future. We have to take responsibility.
I pray for this man in Jesus Christ name may he if he has not accept you Jesus Christ as lord and savior or send a preacher or prophet his way so he can be saved I prayed for him to sister in Christ

I couldn’t understand why a person I knew in Flint, Michigan owned a home and preferred to live homeless and wonder the lonely streets. His own kid had a great job and could not understand it. Isolation? He isn’t addicted to drugs but mentally something is off with him. It could be near zero degrees and he prefers the streets. Everyone in the neighborhood knows him offers him stuff. He always declines.

This makes me wanna help people. Good thing im 1 year away from a degree as a therapist. This is going to be my life and im so excited about that :)
We need to save our climate, practice empathy and mindfulnes and make the right (altough sometimes uncomfortable) choices in life.
I'm not a big fan of therapy but it helps a lot of people
I wish you keep your own place of happiness, like my therapist does. She's always welcoming, even working long hours at a public hospital with not so good paying here in my country in South America.
At 18 years old I went in got out at 36 years of age another 15 on parole 62 years old today been homeless 4 times I'm fucked up mentally have housing
Edward Rozanski, I have empathy and compassion for you. I was diagnosed with serious mental illness. I have JESUS CHRIST in my life and HE healed other disorders. Jesus loves me so much.Self hatred has been ebbing away. Day by day. You can have a loving relationship with HIM. HE is real and paid for all ours sins. In this life we WILL have troubles but I can take heart, JESUS overcame the whole world for those who ask HIM to save them. I am liking myself more and more and one day I will be at home and rest in HIM. PEACE is tangible with HIM. You can not argue this with me. I know HIM and HE knows me and still loves me anyway. I was drinking and talking to myself one night, parents called the police they took me to a psych ward. I was held for two weeks and released. Had to walk 25km without shoes back to my parents place, they left my shoes outside and called the police again. Said I would be arrested for trespassing if I returned. I had no where to go, spent a month homeless, sleeping outside, thank God I had some money so I could get food, but i felt hopless, unloved and unwanted.

Everyday i thank the stars,that i didnt become a full on addict till my mid 40's...At my last request by my employer to take a drug test.I retired..That was 7 years ago .Im now 50 with no alarm clock.Floating through the clouds.Building funky bicycles,making art projects..and living off of stock dividends....Life can always be worse

But even when you've been given affordable housing (that you can really afford) after being homeless you are still controlled by the system. They will decide if your voucher or whatever assistance will be renewed based on their subjective ideas. If you have $$$ & can afford to live wherever you want no one bothers you. That's 1 of the reasons homeless people don't try for permanent housing.

That's why I never chose to participate in section 8. I bought a RV 20 yrs. ago and lived as cheap as I could with my son. I have always been a nomadic spirit 🥰

My son is being relised in 5weeks after 10 years in prison .but thankfully he has me here for him..getting high is a no no.even if you have degrees.well done you .but hay sober is what we want you 2 be.

This is a mental health and substance use issue, homelessness is a byproduct of that
40 million to 52 million Americans suffer from addiction and mental health issues and will never experience homelessness. MOST HOMELESS PEOPLE ARE SOBER!

This is a journey that , if you have never been in a situation that you don't have your own place 2 call home, you just don't understand. Homeless situation's come in all ways this can an dose happen 2 all kinds of people.ita made worst , because of how society looks down on them. Everyone of all homeless population is different. He's a realist. We all have a different journey in live. Just because he's doing something outta the normal doesn't mean he's wrong. We should legalize drug's and stop hiding who we are. Stop stigmatizing people that want to live life on their terms.

Martin is a very intelligent and articulate man. Like ALL men, he suffers from failings. The most horrific human failing, one that is inexcusable, is greed. No person deserves to be homeless, NO ONE! and no one deserves to be hungry. This means no human being walking our planet. If our government was to follow this mantra, rather than the mantra of defending and sacrificing human lives for strategic resources, our world would be an exponentially kinder and less violent place.
He is honest and respectful. Hope He gets a break.
I in no way want to judge you. My daughter is currently on the streets. I pray every day, that she is ready to be done. I think you should try to get on something legal that will help you. As long as you use illegal drugs, society will be down your throat. Perhaps an ADHD med would help. My daughter refuses to get help and I can't force her, it's heartbreaking. I hope you get housed and life is what you want it to be.

While I feel sadly for this man's troubles, he should have some sense of mind not to be admitting on camera that he's presently high on smoking Meth. This could effect his ability to obtain help, or require him to enter a detox program. His difficulties will just be prolonged if he to smoke Meth, and it's never to late to quit one's bad habits. I doubt that him admitting such will have any impact on obtaining help. His name is not even on the title and in a program that (stupidly) cares whether you're on drugs, they'll test you. I appreciate the honesty. People should stop lying.
Also, drug addiction is a very complicated illness that hardly anybody actually understands. To say he should quit, especially under his circumstances, is unreasonable.
Please don't judge him, living on the street is really hard, drugs can help.
That he’s so authentic is why I want to help him more. The honesty is necessary.

Well he has to have a "safe space" after visiting his Dope Shooting Gall... uh, "Harm Reduction Center!" Next we should serve him a Rib Eye Steak, Baked Potato with buttered sour cream, Baby carrots, Water crest smothered in balsamic vinegar. For dessert an ice cream sundae with whipped cream and roasted walnuts in syrup. Oh each course MUST served with an expensive wine of his choosing. All of it provided at expense of taxpayers! That's life in Mark's perfect socialist world!

Many people have a chemistry where meth normalizes the imbalance, and also helps ptsd- for some people.Whats to judge? if it was legal, it wouldn't be a big deal.

But there are much safer, non addictive alternatives to meth. Using it to medicate yourself would never be a valid use of the substance. Its not a solution or healing you. It just makes you feel different and you pay for that escape with your long term mental and physical health.
