This week I was back out on the streets of Traverse City with an outreach team. They told me Michael was still homeless and he wanted to talk to me. They updated me a little on what happened in the last year. My heart broke listening to how Michael has gone through more tragedy.
After I interviewed Michael last year, he was able to get inside for around four months. He was living in a house with his fiancée and a group of people. Michael's fiancée passed away, and he could not stay in the house any longer. I was told by people connected to Michael it was very tragic.
As if that's not heartbreaking enough, Micheal's other son was killed a few months back by an improvised explosive device (IED) while serving our country. Then a few days later, his brother was murdered.
Even worse, Michael was recently diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He says that cancer has already spread from his pancreas all the way to his right side. Michael says he has a year to live.
All though Michael has suffered more tragedy, he claims to be happy. I can't even imagine what he must be going through.
The public needs to understand that homeless people are not homeless by choice. If you look past the homelessness, the drug abuse, and the mental illness you'll often find layers of trauma. Everyone deals with pain and suffering differently. When you see that homeless man on the streets, the public needs to know there is a story behind the person.

And by the looks of it, he is just an alcoholic and a drug addict who makes up stories to get some sympathy. I send that message because for me everything that happened was just a bit over the top. And I got confirmation that he is still alive and off the streets.

@@Brad_Pittstop Your comment brings such a relief. I honestly have been in shock for a couple of days after watching this interview and kept thinking about this man. Although it might be true what you are saying about addiction and making up stories, but I still think people should be helping the channel. Maybe we will see another interview with Mike in some time again.

I am financially comfortable - not rich but I have my own home. This beautiful person is an example of why I always give at least $10 to people asking for money on the street; I don't judge them. It may not save them but it may give them a moment of peace/happiness.

I lost both of my parents last month but after watching this video, I realize that life is full of miseries, there are people out there suffering in a way no one can imagine.
The big thing is none of us are as alone or as uncared for as we think we are. All of us here care about this man, and some of us are willing to even show it through whatever we can aid him with financially. Same with you. I can't offer much other than the reassurance that you are seen, and I pray you receive strength and encouragement as you carry your miseries.

So let me get this straight:
- homeless for 11 years
- his first son died at 5 and a half, his second son died in military service
- his brother was murdered days later
- his fiancee passed away ripping away his only hope of housing and happiness
- on top of all of that he got stage for cancer
- and his car that he worked hard for was towed, his best friend got stabbed and his shelter closed down
And yet he still tells us to smile.
I'm lost for words honestly.

Im a homeless man. Was a cancer survivor. Lost my dad. I have 2 sons. Recieved a decent job though my comissions wasnt enough for both my sons and my sickly mom. And my siblings. Now im back in the streets and malignant cells increasing. I used to sleep under bridges. Or near a dump. Coz its not that cold there. G*d bless everyone of us. We deserve a happy life...

Dipset As the son of a GP I can tell you this. No doctor in the world would Tell him he’s got 1,5 years to live with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It would be more like 1-3months, especially without treatment. This man is clearly a crack addict (eyes, no teeth) and an alcoholic. In two years his wife, his fiancé, his two sons and his brother passed away and he gets diagnosed with stage 4 of the worst cancer you could get. It’s all a bit much.
But he got what he was hoping for, thousands of people feeling sorry for him and praying for him.

He couldn’t confirm Michael was a pathological liar. But he did confirm he met up with him during the holidays of 2019 (almost 2 years after this video was shot) and he was in housing!

Most people nowadays are incapable of critical thinking and take everything they see or hear on tv in for truth. The likelihood of this man being a stone cold liar, an alcoholic and a drug user looking for some sympathy is far greater than him living with stage 4 pancreatic cancer for over 2 years (after diagnosis) without any treatment what so ever.
Listening to this mans heartbreaking story really makes the little problems in life seem like a waste of energy.

She was only 29 years old (Marlena Ciambrone) and I left everything behind and lost myself. This gave me a sense of hope, even as lonely as I feel. Thank you, Michael. RIP brother. Hmm, good point. But I just don't think money will solve it. Even if not said in the interview I think substance abuse, and/or mental health is at the root of all this. There is no easy fix for this. But would be good to know if ppl. getting mental health help, perhaps can start there, help them towards that, so they then perhaps can help themselves.
I know that I, personally, am going to make a conscious decision to reframe my prejudice regarding homelessness. We all carry our own cross but what I take for granted in my life would be Christmas to others on the street. I am talking basics. A toothbrush and toothpaste. Bandaides. Tylenol for heaven's sake! I may not be able to solve the problem or to fix anything for the greater good but I can sure as hell treat them as human beings and if I can afford to get together a few care packages to pass along then I will be the one who has been blessed by being allowed and able to do so.

I feel for this man. I am 32 years old, 9 years ago my girlfriend and daughter died in a car accident. It's hard and I have no family and I just work and very difficult being solo only paycheck. I am alone but got to survive and feel for him

Somebody said the more we suffer here in this world the more we will get rewarded! My 5 years old son just passed away suddenly a month ago and I’m just turned 43 as well. Heartbroken, feel of emptiness, sadness all this bad sensations is with me and our family… sometimes you feel you have it all and next morning you realize you have nothing!!! It happens. I am sobbing, thinking of this man. I have accrued debt that I am incapable of paying back because of a worthless diploma and am headed toward homelessness due to the mess that I have become, emotionally, psychologically...I wish I had a tenth of the strenghth of this man...

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer on July 8th. Six weeks later, he passed away on August 21st. He went so fast.
I feel so badly for this gentleman. He seems like such a wonderful soul.
I was so close to giving up. I’ve suffered so much trauma. Idk sometimes if I’ll ever make it in the real world again. I have a car, a crap one, and I was going to just go get in it drive and die. Attractive enough to get drugs (I don’t even do them) enough to make it easier on anyone who might still give a shit about me.

I used to be an outreach RN in shelters and started to understand a tiny bit. Realized how judgemental I used to be. An older man really let me in to his trauma and sadly he’s passed now, but I think of him all the time when I hear stories from street-involved people. It’s heart breaking to see so many in need of kindness first and handouts second

Here in America, our war Veterans often end up homeless, addicted to drugs, or end up committing suicide because they can't deal with what they saw (and did) in the war. Very sad, and the government does nothing about it.

Losing your love ones is the worst thing a human goes through in life and at least for me I can relate to this man as I lost everyone in my imediate family and this has left a hole of pain I can't seem to dig myself out of. If I wasn't well off I maybe where this man was. The depression is real and seems like I am in a losing fight. It gets so bad at times that those dark thoughts are so overwhelming and I feel like smashing things and doing harm to myself. If I wasn't some what mentally strong I think I wouldn't be here now.
