Young Homeless Man Shares Real Truth About Sleeping Rough in Cardiff, Wales.

- Опубликовано: 11 июн 2018
- Andy has been sleeping rough in Cardiff, Wales for the last three weeks. Andy's dad is an alcoholic and he feels safer sleeping outside than at home with family.
When I first saw Andy is was sleeping. As a rule, I never wake anyone up. Andy shares about how he has been walking around at night and desperate for sleep. Sleep deprivation is common for homeless people sleeping rough. A good nights sleep is rare.
Although Andy shares about rough sleeping in the United Kingdom, the challenges of living on the streets homelessness are the same in the United States and Canada. People don't just walk by, they spit on you and call you names. People even with good intentions give an overabundance of food yet refuse to help with money or other basics needs besides Mcdonalds or Burger King meals.
Here's a post I wrote about panhandling and people begging for money: “Giving Money to Homeless People Is Okay byrslf.co/giving-money-to-hom...
Andy's story is powerful. He's only 21 years old and he's experiencing more pain and suffering than any young adult should. Sadly, Andy's story is far too common among homeless young adults. Instead of giving a sandwich we all must work together to end homelessness.
Thanks to all of your support, we got Andy inside tonight. He found me a little while after this interview with all of the change he had made from panhandling in his hand and said "I am going to give this to a charity box." Just by helping him get inside tonight it changed everything.
Special thanks to Crisis www.crisis.org.uk

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.
A homeless friend once shared a story about when he needed a toothbrush. He stood in front of a grocery store displaying a sign asking for money to buy the toothbrush. It wasn’t long before people started to give him food. He gratefully accepted multiple bags of fast food meals as he tried to collect money to buy a toothbrush. He set the bags next to him. Although it was clear he had already been given food, people continued to give him more. He never was able to purchase the toothbrush he needed.
Jeffery is homeless in Toronto, Canada. “You’re cold. You get soaking wet. You never know where you’re going to sleep,” Jeffery said about homelessness. He also went on to say that the one thing you don’t have to worry about is food when you are homeless. ruclips.net/video/0RPnZkL-6H8/видео.html
People like to give food. Nonprofits have programmed the public the homeless people need food because they know people will donate money for food programs. For those of you having an issue with Andy talking about throwing away Burger King the point Andy is trying to make is he already gets plenty of food - too much food even - yet people still keep giving him food and more food. What would you do with 15 hamburgers?
The public needs to be educated about homelessness and real needs. The simple solution is to ask and listen - then help when you can.
You can never go wrong giving out socks - How to Give Socks to Homeless People. ruclips.net/video/RVHaf4FtsfE/видео.html
Another option is period products for homeless women. Some cities have organizations set up for this exact purpose.
That is why when someone begs for money I give them what they need. A ride, food, blanks, or toiletries but never money.
As you say, talk and listen is the most important thing. Only then can you help them.
Invisible People help them find a job instead taking videos and post.
No, it's not the "most important" thing. They need REAL help. Don't pester the homeless trying to talk to them because YOU think that's what they want.
Homeless people never cry, until they tell you how hard their life is.

You wouldn't believe how many people just walk by without even glancing. I was on my way home from work one day. I gave him some cigarettes and sat down with him for a chat. I couldn't believe how many people walk past in their own little world, or laughing amongst their friends when somebody is literally at their feet struggling. How many hundreds of them have a 50 pence piece in their pocket, and they won't even give that. It genuinely is unbelievable.
I haven't seen him for a long time now. I often wonder how he's doing. I didn't catch his name, sadly.

Because you're a chicken
How can someone who is homeless secure a job?
to secure a job, a person needs to have an address and present themselves at the interview, at the very least, in a clean state. How can someone who is homeless get a job? Is it laziness or a lack of empathy on the part of those who mistreat people living on the streets? Not everyone uses drugs; many have severe issues, including mental health problems. More respect is needed
There are a lot of homeless people that have jobs. There must be a way around the address thing.

When I was 18 years old I was living on the streets of London going through the same issues problems as you. I woke up one day and said enough. I walked straight into an army recruitment centre in the Strand London and said I want to join the army. This was the biggest and most important decision of my life. In the army you get fed, housed and paid a kings ransom. That was 26 years ago. Since then I have left the army, been to university, got a masters degree and now I work for a top global company as a consultant. I earn a fantastic salary that I never thought was possible. I have no regrets about making that decision 26 years ago. Today you need to go to 8th Floor, Southgate House, 84 Wood Street and ask about joining the Army. A big decision that will change your life for the better.
Id agree.Unfortunately and as I'm sure your aware the Army isn't the same thing it was 26 years ago. Most of the recruitment process these days is done over the phone. You need to have an Email address and a working smartphone to download an app before you even talk to a serving soldier face to face. If however he rocked up at an office and told them the situation its just luck of the draw if there is an actual serving recruitment team there that can help him through the process. Not just a MOD contracted civvie in a 'be the best tracksuit' who only knows how to play dvds and what one certain unit did during 1984 to 2002. During peace times it would be trickier as the MOD doesn't pump as much into recruiting . Also remember its not for everyone and no matter how completely useless some of your blokes have been, it does take a certain type of person to even see it as a possibility.
Barney Geddes agreed
it is we who put one foot before the other who go forward ...sitting beggars make me puke...
The military is a good option if its your only option, but then you are a servant of the military industrial complex. The modern miltaries (and in Britain's case, their old empire) of the west throw their weight around the world for PROFIT/POWER/RESOURCES at the expense of innocent communities. No blood for oil, minerals, and strategic lands. Please don't join the military. If you are American, consider joining Americorps, a domestic community service program that trains/pays young people.
ok boomer
I became homeless after 911 when I lost my job. I moved to the West coast and started a technology company called Electron Mechanical Corporation.
I survived by recycling cans and bottles making up to $70.00 a day.
Hustle or die. Never give up!
NEVER
That's awesome to hear, Great job!
Yes. I did the can thing too. Copper whatever. Then day labor until I got hired full time. Got to stick with it and push push push forward.
How can you start a Company, being homeless? People with money have a hard time starting and keeping a business... so tell how that happened...
cool name for a company
I hope this sick world has not erased the humanity in this young guy. I wish from the bottom of my heart that now he can be safe.
How is he today? I need an update... My heart is crying watching him... 😟💔💔💔😭
I have a feeling this conversation stopped him from wanting to die, and gave him hope to see a brighter future.
Hopefully 🙏🏾.. because bad situations tend to repeat themselves
@tac0cat hes trolling im pretty sure
@galexio Give me the proof!
@@siddharthkumaryadav8565 what did he say??
Never, ever give up.
That is too easy to say when you are doing just fine.
My heart is literally broken in peaces watching this poor lad. May God be with him😔🙏
Amazing channel shedding light on this. My heart goes out to you my friend hope things get better for you my man
Everytime he said “thank you for stopping” my heart ached. Hope he’s in a better situation now.
@Yousif Omar shit. really unfortunate but appreciate you letting me know. Rest In Peace :/
@Yousif Omar give source
@A Godartti oh wow I don't know why I assumed he was being honest. Ya'll are right, shouldn't trust anything without a source.
I'd be so happy to know he is safe.
Can someone just take him home? He needs a family that will care for him. I cried just by watching this. My heart goes out to this young man.
Why don't you? Housing isn't free
I am scared what will happen to him. He seems too emotional and weak right now. Maybe be he has anxiety and malnutrition. His face shows injury maybe he was attacked by gangs. Don't know what he will do.
why doesn't he get on welfare instead of lying there on the ground? He's 21 years old. He is eligible for welfare.
You wouldn't be able to get job seekers allowance in that situation, you need to be actively seeking work to qualify but how can you apply for jobs when you don't have a phone number, address, etc
V W you can live in a mens shelter and apply for allowance, and use the shelter as your address. wake up, this guy is lying. like 99% of the idiots who bug you for money downtown, they all think they are the frigging embodiment of Fagin (from Oliver Twist) , Charlie Chaplin (street urchin entertainer) , and Robin Hood (taking rich people's money to share with friends etc. ) all melded into one sad sack of crap
Sir, you are an absolute hero. i've been in your position. And have nothing but total respect for you. I'm glad that you told us about the real needs of those who've been there.
He needs to learn that beggars can't be choosers..
Thanks for helping and listening to him.
As somebody who is homeless for 2 years after getting out of serving our military. I can tell you for a fact that all of these problems that you all are commenting on or absolutely true. What do you think homeless people do stupid stuff in the streets to get arrested we do it on purpose because if we know we go to jail we can have three free meals a warm place to sleep in a free shower where we won't be sleeping outside. Why do you think a lot of homeless people do that stupid stuff in the middle of the winter? So they at least have a warm place to sleep. I did stuff like that when I was homeless cuz I had no choice because you go days without eating when I was homeless you all I had people pee on me. I had somebody like my sleeping bag on fire when I was in the middle of the night when I was sleeping food dumped on me. I've been cussed out had stuff thrown at me from outside of car windows. He spit on me dump drinks on me. People do horrible things to you when you're homeless. And I wasn't doing anything bad. I've never done drugs in my life. I'm an ex Army veteran. I drink on special occasions for birthdays and on New Years. That's it. But I was just homeless I wasn't doing any bad. I was just outside. And people would just constantly stay the same thing that they would say to this young man. Get a job. Stop doing drugs. You're a junkie. You're a bum. You're worthless. I'm a human being I was just struggling.
And at the top of it all, people consider the homeless to be parasites of society. "Just get a job and stop being homeless!" they say.
I know a guy who as a manager of a retail store and was fired after the boss discovered he was homeless. Plenty of jobs and employers require you to have a rooftop, much because a lot of people think being homeless is the same as being an addict, the society's scourge.
I'm sorry for you struggle💔
Anyone who went through basic training should never be homeless
You are a soldier. Maybe others won’t agree with me, but in my opinion you are a soldier and people should learn from people like you. Whatever homeless people wish for, we have that, but we think it is for free or something, man, you guys are absolute soldiersz
God give you lots of love sir. Please take care. I hope things get better for you in life
"Have a nice house, have a nice job, and have a family."
I'm 25 years old, and my mom and dad were extreme alcoholics my whole life. From 9 years old I've lived in motels ridden with bed bugs, and slum apartments.
I'm in my own place now and have been for 3 years.
What he wished for hits home for me so hard because he's suffering just like I did. I did everything I could to get away from my father when I lived with him, including sleeping in parks or going wherever I could just to be free of it all. I wish I could speak to him and let him know that one day things will get better. He needs a good friend and someone to lift him up. I hope from the bottom of my soul he finds reprieve. If there is a god, I pray they show him mercy.
If there wasn't a GOD you wouldn't of made it out of what you where going through it's time to give you're life to JESUS and give him a chance!
@@soldierforyeshua1 I'm not here to argue about religious beliefs, I just wanted to share my feelings for this hurting soul. Please don't make it about religion.
I was raised in a Christian family. I was devout, even considered becoming an evangelical like yourself, but I can't deny my reality. There is no reason for me to draw the conclusion that there is a god, or even that there is not a god. All I know is that I know nothing.
@@user-xj2td9sd7w that's the problem its not becoming a pastor ect it's about have a relationship with JESUS by faith most of these church's and pastor's are not of GOD! The Kenneth copeland the Paula white the benny Hines ect they are all sold out for money you need to come out of the corrupt church system! And get a personal relationship with JESUS right in you're own home or basement ect and ask him to lead you by his Holy Spirit and everything else will fall into place!
Total respect for overcoming such hardship, beating the odds and making something of your life. People who have been lucky enough to have been brought up in a loving, stable family don’t have any idea what it takes to find the strength inside to raise yourself. All the best for success and happiness in every aspect of your life.
My heart sinks watching this video. Thank you for educating us about real problems in this society.
The part that did it for me and made me a blubbering mess was when he said he held off carrying a blanket for two weeks because he was embarrassed, but now he doesn't care ... if I had 3 wishes Id wish for him the life he deserves.a happy one full of warmth and love..
Amen LORD give him his hearts desire
he was smiling at first . it is the judgemental beasts that makes him cry not the hunger nor the cold . they broke his spirit those rat bastard
Absolutely heartbreaking. Something so basic like toothpaste or a flannel to wash his face is out of his reach. Such basic essentials we all take for granted. I'm moved to tears everytime I watch this and hope he managed to get himself into a better situation. Would have been extra challenging on the streets during covid. The high streets were empty
I hope that poor lad is somewhere safe now with someone who loves him. Life so unfair sometimes.
He looks so torn down and broken like he wants to cry.. poor guy.. i think he needs a mama... someone to hug and love him and bring him in.
sup mama? goo goo gaa gaa. lmao
same
you can be my mama
Why don’t you setup go-fund-me’s for the people you interview. Your audience clearly wants to help out, I’m sure most wouldn’t mind giving these folks at least a dollar.
Ruben Gonzalez it’s not easy to set up , so many formalities and procedures to follow, yo will have issues with tax departments too, Think before you speak.......
It would also get quite fast exploited by money hungry people
Brat Balal “so many formalities and procedures to follow, yo will have issues with tax departments too”
That’s big government for ya...
Absolutely
I think he should set up the funds he should manage the funds for them cuz I think he's a good man for doing these don't give the funds to the homeless he should make like a fund of some sort and try to help them out
Omg this is heartbreaking. Same age as my son who was at one point living in his car, unbeknown to me, but that broke my heart when I found out. He has been living with me (his Mum) ever since. I was not long divorced at the time and my son didn't want to bother me! He was in tears, so was I, the idea of him being homeless and vulnerable out there, terrified me. This young man I would bring home to live with us if we were there. Poor thing. Bloody alcohol ruins so many lives. Alcoholics choose alcohol over their own children which I just can't understand. Mate I hope you're doing okay. You don't deserve this
Wow! I just cried watching this young man tell his story, can we all just take a moment & be grateful for being safe, having a roof over our head , food on the table & a family to come home to. I pray God he gives him better days & show him that there's light at the end of the tunnel, I believe in everyone's life dark days don't last, god bless you, I will keep you in my prayers. 🙏🙏
I don’t understand how people can be so rude and unhelpful to those who are less fortunate
Then I want to ask you, how many homeless did you help? Give me a a number
because fear and anxiety are needed to make people work the shit jobs they can get
@@aboomination897 That sounds like a conspiracy theory and a good one
@RUclipsUser It's not a predatory society, it's just society. There's no such thing as a perfect one and people have the right to choose not to care about something. Sounds harsh, but at least there is free will there. I choose to help people if I can afford to. But a world where you don't have the choice but to, wouldn't be a free one.
I’m shocked. I’m only one year younger than him. His story make me appreciate that I have a home. I really hope he’ll have a bright future one day
I believe he will. You should have seen the smile on his face when he left to go get inside for the night.
Invisible People you Mark are one of the few that people really trust on the streets. You were there, suffering like him but now you have returned to help. You're amazing!
No good hoping do something about it the next person you walk by give them whatever money you can afford
