  • Derrick is a survivor. After losing millions of dollars in the Great Recession of 2008, Derrick's life then snowballed to living in a tent homeless in Oakland, California.
Over time, other homeless people started camping around Derrick, and a small homeless encampment grew into a tent city. I featured the tent community here: • Oakland Tent City Home...
Derrick is running for mayor. You can learn more and support his campaign here: / derrick-soo-for-city-o...

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

It's happening all over. There's a homeless area on the outskirts of Bozeman, MT that's just beautiful (green grass, mountains rising up in the near distance) where there is one or two long streets with campers lined up. Apparently almost everyone living in the campers, trailers, etc. work and some are even small business owners. So outrageous. The wealthy arrived in droves and home prices and rental costs went through the roof. Societal collapse all around us, aided and abetted by local, state, and federal governments.

This is crazy, i lived in oakland for 14 years. I come from a middle class family, went to the Air Force and when I got out of the military from my last duty station in California I moved to Oakland cause it was the most affordable. Within a few turn of events I became homeless myself sleeping in my car. I was on the verge of sleeping on the streets when I decided to reach outside to an apartment manager that I knew. By the grace of God she let me into one of her units for three months for free with the promise of paying it all back once I started school using my GI Bill. I thank God for her and my situation definitely humbled me. Praying for this man that God brings him out of this misfortune.

Sorry to read your story. If you owned a lot of luxury homes and clearly had a successful business and lifestyle, how do you lose all the homes you owned? Is that because everyone foreclosed banks loans and it all has a knock on effect? I knew people that lost jobs and homes and were back at their parents place in their 40's in 2008. It was a brutal crash worse than the early 90's when I was in my 20's. The 87 crash I was 14 then. My grandfather lost money in shares. I remember him talking to my Dad about it.

@@dd007x investors put up 30% and got loan approved for the 70%, when the real estate melt down we lost our money first, the equity or down payment evaporated fast, then we had no money coming in because 19 homes in escrows did not closed 3 of them were funded the same day when the banks recalled the funds. It was a mess. We could not sell, so we tried to rent and nobody paid rent either. The house went back to the lenders and we still got stuck with the capital gains for the one we sold and did 1031 exchange. Our family lost everything, but most importantly we had business that generated income besides RE investments. However it was very hard, I did buy more and more thinking I got the house cheaper then I could make it out alive. The RE sunk badly in Las Vegas, the first went up and the first went down. We could not sell, there were thousands and thousands of homes belonging to the banks. Well, we are here in 2022 and are safe. Watching these videos, it is so fascinating to know that it is a simple lifestyle with freedom. I am older and I only travelled on the cruise ship, I admired these people they are so brave. We know where to go for a month on the road in the summer. Nice meeting you David. I did not lose money in 1987, I almost did. But 2008 was my biggest loss, we made a lot of money when I moved to Nevada, but we lost it all because we did the 1031 exchange, our portfolio looked so good, until the market collapsed. We cried. People don’t realize a big chuck of LA’s homeless would never be homeless if housing costs weren’t off the charts.

I would not want to stay there. Too expensive and not worth it. It's priced that way to keep the😳 streets clear for the "upper crust".

So true , majority of landlords have the attitude . ."keeping up with the Jones" in other words if one area raises the rent then it becomes a chain reaction !

The market determines housing cost, the more someone is willing to pay the more the price goes up

Even if he had work he still probably couldn't get a place to live. He was even talking about UPS drivers and other people living in his tent community with jobs yet they're all there, homeless.

I was homeless after working in the steel industry for 20 years.. same company until it shut down. I didn't make this much but it was respectable. At the top of 08' I had a house, cars, savings, 401k, stocks, and fiancé.
Now,,, I work full time at Amazon and am renting a very expensive motel room, no car, a couple hundred saved for a studio at some point, my clothes and some miscellaneous items that All fit in 2 suitcases,,, single.
At least I can be thankful to sleep in a bed with heat tonight and have the possibility of everything getting better gradually. America is a struggle for people who are poor, it just seems so much harder these days.

It broke my heart when he said a UPS driver can’t afford to rent a house where he works, this is insane and unacceptable. I hope he wins the mayorship, and I’m rooting for him.
