I planned on replying to every comment here, but the amount of them is a little overwhelming... I have read most of them though. I love you all so much and appreciate all the support too! To those of you struggling with a substance, I hope sharing my story helped or at least provoked some positive thoughts on possibly making some changes in your life. 3 years later and I am still sober: ruclips.net/video/kb8gLNYNah0/видео.html

My circadian rhythm was FUKKD and I used to plan my meals around it. My friendships suffered and I was soooo tired of hiding my habit! So one day l woke up, got ready for work and put all the bottles in my cupboard in a bag and threw it in the communal trash on my way out. Never looked back and although my body is still in recovery, l do not miss that life of planning everything around alcohol anymore. If I can do it, so can you. Good luck ❤

Little late to the comment. Something that has helped me is to understand that it's not our fault. It's the drug and poisons fault. It's not that we lack willpower, it's that the poison robs us of ourselves. All of the problems are because of a addictive substance we trick ourselves into believing is controllable through will power. A lot is never enough, a little is always too much.

I'm 54, quit drinking 11 months ago after about 30 years of being drunk. Being sober is hard lately. I don't want to drink though. What's hard is realizing the life I built on booze sucks. My job sucks. I hate where I live--it's ugly. The people are ugly here. Garbage everywhere. I keep thinking a geographic cure will fix things but they never have in the past (forget strange cities or countries, I've woken up after black out drinking on a couple different continents). I left my drunk wife of 7 years. I gave her an ultimatum--she chose booze. I don't blame her but don't want to be with a drunk. Plus, she was a real bitch. Genuine. So ugliness abounds, existential yearning and regret torture me. To quote the poet James Wright, "I have wasted my life."

That’s really inspiring. 8 years. Wow. That’s great.
I know how it feels. I would tell myself that I would quit after today, after today. And it got bad. I would start going two days tops without drinking. Two days was like a record and rarely did I make it to say three. I’m trying hard to take a break. I’ve been sober 7 days. It’s 2019 and I can’t remember the last time I went a week without being drunk. Seven days. It doesn’t seem like much but honestly, seven days is so rare. Proud of myself. I want to share my accomplishment but it’s hard because no one even knows I suffer from alcohol abuse. No one knows my accomplishment.

Yes. It's like a lover who cheats. You keep forgiving them but they are inherently unfaithful until eventually you've had enough. But not everyone throws out their cheating lover. Or the booze. But the betrayal will continue for alcohol belies the danger it poses to your health and wellbeing. Ask me. I am now a quadriplegic after just a few drinks too many one night I fainted. I suddenly lost consciousness and broke my neck. Yes, this shit is dangerous. It should be sold with a skull and crossbones label. It is a poisonous substance that shouldn't be bottled and sold as a form of entertainment. It's liquid disease.

1 year is HUGE. I'm on day 39 myself. While I miss the brief moments of euphoria - I don't miss the constant negativity that engulfed me. When the brain is being given artificial happiness, it STOPS producing natural happiness. THAT was the key insight for me.

Jesse Munson 1 year, 1 month, and 16 days sober today. It has been one hell of a journey. Lost a lot of so called “friends” but I finally found peace within myself. I used to go to AA meetings, but it’s not for me anymore. I still talk to my sponsors here and there. Time heals, just keep occupied. The relationships with my family is stronger, I have better relationships with my actual friends, and my overall health, mental health, and physical health is way better. Getting sober was the best thing I did for myself. Keep strong, and take it one day at a time.

SPOT ON YES WELL SAID. YES. We need to educate about this! ANY drug that makes the brain “happy” will confuse and depress the brain when it leaves. And those “brief moments” are awesome but are so hard to reach without going through so many mental gymnastics (for me anyway) just so isn’t worth it. Other ways....exercise, “soft focus” on a beautiful scene, so many other ways you can reach euphoria even if briefly every day.... when SOBER.

Excellent point of view; sleep, diet, exercise -- it's all important. You mentioned a well-known person and I know we're taught in the rooms not to think about them as role models but when I think about the late great Tom Petty, he was reticent about talking about drinking and the cocaine year working with Dave Stewart and then finally after a long time he gave his biographer carte blanche to speak the truth about his nightmare father and his Dantesque mid-life breakdown when he was on heroin for a year and couldn't get off it alone. The irony in his case was as he said, 'I turned pain into anger into ambition into an acute sense of social justice and finally into forgiveness' and his death from an accidental overdose had nothing to do anymore with addiction; he fell on his sword for his audience, to whom he felt great loyalty so months and months on a broken hip on pain killers, so tragic and so ironic; he still had so many plans; he was incredibly thrilled to be a grandfather, all that.

I can't say whether or not she will forgive you because I'm a different person. But giving up on alcohol is the greatest chance you'll ever have to taking your first best step through the door of a new way of living your life. You cannot change the past but you have all the power you could ever ask for by changing the future with not giving alcohol a chance. I believe a lot of people are stronger than they give themselves credit for; people do drink for a lot of reasons and people tell themselves at times the alcohol numbs the pain or helps them deal with the pain. But alcohol is one of those silent killers. It's like a heartless thief that you let into your home, he promises he's just there to hang out and make you feel better like a bad influence.. But slowly he's finding every way to take all of your enjoyment away and control you. This is alcohol, one of the worst enemies of joy. It's like a snake's slow killing venom. It's destroyed so many lives from yesterday to hundreds of years before us. So you have this chance to make your own history and succeed where others have failed before, when alcohol comes knocking at the door promising you he'll cheer you up with good times. Just remember how many other families he's ruined and be glad you never let him in.

Either way I’m not letting anything come between me & my long term goal of running a whole marathon. I’ve run 4 halfs now. i am 65 days sober. the biggest change for me came when i watched my usually emotionally closed off girlfriend who i love more than anything open up and cry to me about how much she wishes i could quit. she delt with HELL from being with me and told me she stayed for the guy i was sober. two completely different people. i lost my 17$ an hour job driving forklift all day easiest job. a week later i totaled my car and got a DUI. lost my liscence. that still didnt stop me. extremely suicidal. i also fantasized and planned suicide. my parents didnt really want me arround because i was an asshole neither did my sister or her boyfriend my best friend. everyone hated me and i hated myself. then i saw the pain in my girlfriends face and that was what it took for me to change. ive decided one sip = a series of bad things happening. more pain. one sip means walking into my own personal hell. that makes it alot easier to say no. god bless all of you and even if youre on day 3 fuck yeah man. its 100% worth it.

I have to say that as a Spouse of an Alcoholic, I feel the urge to say, I am so PROUD of you. I had an argument with my husband tonight, at nights, he’s in the red zone. He is a 12 pack of Budweiser a day kind of Alcoholic. He never goes without it. Or without his 2 pack a day cigarettes. When I met him he was working, and only drinking in the evenings. Then he lost his job, and would drink from the moment he got up, to the moment he goes to sleep. He did that for 1 year. Until he found a part time job. I have left him 5 times. I can’t even begin to explain the things he’s done. It is a horrible existence. You have love in your heart now. Never stop. Life can be beautiful. It’s what you make of it. You have a standing ovation from me. Thank you for being brave and posting this video. I might make my husband watch it. God bless you. Xoxoxox -Lucy Male.

Hi Lucy sorry for your troubles, my wife dealt with my drinking for years and nothing she would say could make me quit I would make a ton of promises but they would soon be broken, I had a moment of clarity one day I looked in the mirror and said God either take the urge to drink away or take me, the next day I just didn't drink, a week went by and it dawned on me that I had been sober for a week. I stayed sober for about ten years and gave casual drinking a try luckily I noticed that wasn't going to fly with me pretty quick. The main thing I want to say is take care of you, love the person hate the disease. Your Husband has to do it for himself and find added strength eventually from your relationship. The biggie is taking care of yourself and being whole for you. Remember if nothing changes well ... nothing changes. For me it's God his promises and the fact that he kept them, Yes I am now a Bible thumping Jesus Freak but I am really cool with it. This me is my best me. Good luck to you sending prayers.

You need the foundation before you can build a house. Basically you need to fortify yourself and get the hard part done with before you can start the process. Admitting alcohol is in control is the hardest part to realize when you’re drunk everyday. I don’t touch any of that maybe once a year no joke. All because I’ve watched my dad become a bad drunk to the point he beat my mom. My girlfriend is struggling with alcohol and she isn’t even 20 yet. She crashed and totaled 2 cars because of alcohol and I know she wants help but she can’t quite get to that point yet. She says she’s not ready to give up on it but she’s a lot better with it. I understand everyone is their own person and I can’t change her but I really wish she would take that step. I love her to death and I plan on marrying her but I’m not going to marry my dad. I told her that and she turned it around so I gave up on that. Now I casually tell her once and a while I don’t like it and she gets mad so I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing by just letting her do what she wants and going on her time with the process. You can make it man it’s a demon you need to battle before it kills you. Godspeed

Thank you for this video, I remember watching it about a year ago and it was helpful to make me quit. I'm 9 months now! Thinking and praying for everyone else starting to walk the path of sobriety!

I used to drink a lot, made some bad decisions and had some bad experiences. It’s very addictive. Then it started making me sick, I would get hangovers from only a few drinks. I started to hate how it made me feel. I used to be able to pound liquor with no problems and minimal hangovers, then I started feeling awful from only a few drinks. I started cutting back a lot and then stopped drinking altogether, i’m so glad I don’t drink anymore. I like feeling healthy and not feeling sick all day. It was a blessing in disguise that it started affecting me negatively, so now I don’t have any cravings toward it anymore and I never drink. It’s just not worth it, i’ve seen family members drink themselves into oblivion, spiral into mental illness, even get pancreatitis/liver cancer and wither away and die. I’ve seen a family member who was an alcoholic and drug addict commit suicide. It’s just not worth it.

This is inspiring. I am in a bit of a dark place and I know I need to get a grip on my drinking. Thank you for sharing

I struggled for years trying to quit, I watched this video maybe a year ago, and unfortunately failed at quitting on my own. I ended up in the hospital early this year with multiple organ failure! If you are reading this and are struggling, please get the help you need! It is not worth it. I’m thankful I was able to get through that horrible wake up call and can proudly say I’m 5 months sober and never looking back! It is not worth it.
