Anyone Can Become Homeless

  • If I didn't meet Sunshine in front of the tent where she sleeps, I would not have guessed she is houseless. She does not look like stereotypical homeless women most people hold in their minds, yet Sunshine lives in a homeless encampment near Los Angeles International Airport.
Sunshine (not her real name) prefers the term houseless, which is a term that's gaining popularity. Even NIMBYs (not in my backyard) have started using the term houseless. I prefer the term homeless, which made for an interesting conversation with Sunshine as we both shared our experiences with homelessness. Someday soon, I'll produce some content on homeless phrases. In short, people should be called whatever term they are comfortable with. I only used "homeless" in the title instead of "houseless" because no one searches using houseless, and people must find Sunshines video.
Sunshine is from Utah. She was on a road trip of self-discovery and ended up stranded in Los Angeles. Before leaving Utah, Sunshine lived in her car and sometimes in a park in Salk Lake City.
Sunshine survives through the community in the homeless encampment and from the help of organizations like Street Watch, a coalition of organizers working to help unhoused people in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. You can find more information about Street Watch here: streetwatchla.com
Sunshine wants to go back to Utah. She has a son that she misses. Sunshine also has a big goal of building homes for homeless people. She believes God wanted her to experience homelessness so she can better help the unhoused community. I am always in awe about how many people experiencing homelessness want to help others.
I love the conversation Sunshine, and I have about the humanity that society could learn from unhoused homeless people. One of the reasons I LOVE homeless people so much is we have an extreme tolerance for others. For the most part, homeless people respect and extend grace to other people. This tolerance of others is not demonstrated in executive board rooms or even our Congress.
The reason Sunshine ended up homeless doesn't matter as much as that; we must get people like her the help they need to restabilize. The longer Sunshine lives outside, the harder it will be to get her out of homelessness.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I went to a park, filled up a two-liter soda pop bottle from that park's water fountain, then spritzed off in a Porta-Potty, then wiped up all the water that I spilled in there (w/the free t.p.). This went on for a couple months, then I quit the burger-flipping job, kept the factory job. Saved three-quarters of the money I made during those five or six months. Then got an apartment. I've been homeless intermittently all of my life. I am now 35. I was born homeless...My mother resided in a hotel while I was a newborn with my two older brothers. We were homeless again when I was 13 until 15, and then I was homeless again from 25 until 27. I lost another home, and was homeless for 6 months at age 30. The entire time I struggled to complete school while living out of my car. People...Prepare your children better so that they don't have to endure the struggles of homelessness and poverty. Had my parents been more responsible and made better plans, there's no reason why I should have ever been homeless. And people today don't believe I've ever been homeless. I'm a Director for a Fortune 500 company, building a home with my husband and living a really extraordinary lifestyle. I've come a long way but I am humble.

    • @DivineRenegadeDeanna
      @DivineRenegadeDeanna 3 года назад +2

The Way of Christ is not to "give" forgiveness. The Way of Christ is to LIVE and BE forgiveness without bounds. It is not for me to forgive anything that did not directly impact me, and if I feel a need to forgive it, then I'm not actually living in the way of christ. Forgiveness is that which we do for ourselves to free us from the bonds of hate that we've built in our own hearts by failing to live in the way of christ.
Christ said "forgive them for they know not what they do". He didn't tell them face to face what their crime/offense/sin/MISTAKE was and shame then for it first, and then grandiosely proclaimed to them that he forgives them so it's all better now that they've been called out, accused, shamed, and "corrected" publicly and forgiven publicly. That's the behavior of the Pharisees (church goers). He had to forgive them without them knowing of any offense or sin, withouts them desiring it and without them even knowing, and without them seeking forgiveness, in order to cleanse and purify his own heart from the hatred instilled in it by those who had him killed for speaking and teachng kindness, gentleness, mercy, self-governance, joyfulness, patience, and love for each other. See, that was the problem. Even then, humanity was inhumane, and it's only gotten worse.
If one feels that they are qualified, in their self-righteous accusations and slandering of another, if one feels that they are OWED an apology in order for them to GRANT forgiveness to ANOTHER, they are definitely in an anti-christ position. As Christ said "blessed are those who are not offended by me". They were offended by him and they killed him mercilessly, without peace, with deception, in a fit of rage and egomaniacal self-righteousness.
And folks need to quit "blaming" and "accusing" "the Jews" for it. That's just a regional racist position. Christ is killed by the indignant self-righteous every time he arrives here ... And Christ has arrived here many times. (Ghandi, Sitting Bull, Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus Christ, Adam, and many others), and the Pharisees (church goers), Sadducees (elites/powerful of the time), Politicians (government), False Prophets ($ profits), and inhumane hateful humans, kill them for teaching and exampling kindness every single time.
Forgiveness ... There's a decade worth of lessons from which all of humanity would benefit.

A friend at the time said "come out here". I went out there, found employment and today I'm safe in my own apartment - gainfully employed. Looking next to buy a little bit of unrestricted land and then a Van for my retirement. I don't know what would have happened if he didn't make that offer. It was winter and I was going to head to Oregon during a very bad time. I didn't care whether I lived or died. How someone copes when in such a predicament varies but one constant that will Help everyone is HUMANITY and EMPATHY if we show folk in these circumstances that we want them to get back on track and achieve their potential then HOPE is built and society as a whole can benefit from each person living a valued life. I hope Sunshine finds her way back to her family and friends in utah and builds on what she has experienced on her journey. There is no higher achievement than helping those in need. As long as we demand that others fix it.and.clean up our messes, the longer it remains and worsens. They'll keep stealing our money for fixes to it, pocketing the funds and growing the problem so they can steal more money to fix it ... And the cycle continues. Only We The People can fix it. But We don't want it to take time, take societal change, have to alter a thing in our own lifestyles, cost us anything (cuz I pay my tribute to the kings I appointed over me), treat people with kindness, or get down off their self-rigjteous pedestals of priviledge to offer a hand up to another human.

A couple of hours in the evening at the university library, working on personal projects. Hop in the back of my SUV at night with a blanket and I'm up again at 5 to start again. I waste almost nothing - resources, time. Nothing.
Circumstances forced me into my car. I was terrified at first, but I've found it's the best way to live. It's not the easiest life, but it's also impossible not to learn compassion for people with even less than me - and that's made the experience worth the effort.

She was homeless in Liberty Park in Utah but she wants to go back to the peace of a small town and her family? She has a son but doesn’t see him any more? She had a car but not now, just a tent? There’s a few missing pieces in this story I think.
How much would a ticket to Utah cost?
    Do people still hitch hike?
It doesn’t seem like an insurmountable challenge to get there.

    Hi Sunshine.
She speaks about the homeless here in Utah at liberty Park. She's probably knows me by the lady who brings bread often to a guy named " Chef Michael." He' himself is homeless and cooks daily for the people in the park that are living in their tents or cars.
Mark if you come to Utah go interview him. He's an awesome Chef !
He gets donations from various people and food banks. Sunshine probably had eaten one if his meals.

The homeless haters who don't know how easy it is to become homeless should watch more of theses. When I was young, there was an older homeless guy who did odd jobs in the neighborhood who slept in a coal shack behind a neighbors home. My mother treated him kind and with respect, fed him and gave him odd jobs, no matter how bad he looked or smelled ....kindness. Everyone on our street did. Later my mom explained he was once a great doctor who fell apart after his wife passed away and began drinking. I was taught to treat everyone with kindness and respect. The same you meet climbing up the ladder, are the same people you meet you meet down the ladder.

It's bad everywhere, but the way everyone glamorizes California, you'd think it was some kind of picnic. My people have been urging me to move out there for years because of all of the opportunities relative to Saint Louis. Man, thank God for RUclips and channels like this dispelling these myths about how swell California is. I wish this young woman the best. Thanks for putting human faces on the homeless epidemic.
