66 thousand homeless people in one county???? and y'all call that a 1st world country? this is like some refugee camp in a war zone wtf
Bruh, its tent city. Truly tragic
USA should legalize assisted euthanasia for the homeless. It would save poor people all sorts of trauma over not having food, clothing, medical care or even a roof over their heads. It would eliminate welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, section 8 subsidized housing projects, a large percentage of ab0rtions, a lot of crime, d.rug trafficking and usage. And lower taxes.~
~~~Several Eur0pean countries such as Switzerland and Belgium have legalized doctor assisted euthanasia for the elderly, disabled, terminally ill, and in some cases, even just severely depressed people.~
~
That is my retirement plan~
~
Also recently Australian euthana$ia activist Philip Nitschke and Dutch designer Alexander Bannink invented a "$uicide pod". ~ Called the “Sarco”, short for sarcophagus, the 3D-printed machine comes with a detachable coffin, mounted on a stand that contains a nitr0gen canister.~
~
“The person who wants to die presses the button and the capsule is filled with nitrogen. He or she will feel dizzy, fall asleep, then quickly lose consciousness and die fast and painlessly,” said Nitschke, who has been dubbed “Dr Death” for his work to legalise euthanasia.~
~
Asked about the controversy surrounding euthanasia and legal hurdles, Nitschke said: “In many countries $uicide is not against the law, only assisting a person to commit $uicide is.”“This is a situation where one person chooses to press a button … rather than for instance standing in front of a train.” “I believe it’s a fundamental human right (to choose when to die). It’s not just some medical privilege for the very sick. If you’ve got the gift of life, you should be able to give that gift away at the time of your choosing,” Nitschke said.
66k only in that area my dude hahah
@James Page James , i have taken in homeless people and gave them food , clothing , cash , cigarettes ... and when i lived in Tampa ... handed out $20 bills and cigarettes and bottled water .
Some of them i would take to eat with me in a decent place .. not McDonald's or fast-food garbage .
i gave them nice clothing , had them go to a cafe for lunch or dinner and when the owner would come up to the table , i would say " this is my buddy , so and so , he's in between jobs ... do you think you have anything for him or know anybody else who might ?
Not everybody who cares about the homeless is all talk and no action ... some of us really do Walk The Walk .
And what have you done for your fellow human who is down and out ...
He's an idiot !!
La has had a homeless problem for decades. Whatever they are doing, it aint working.
LA is good weather.. gonna be a need,, always. How many people are willing to be stacked and packed for a few more days of sunshine and a Beach with Earth Changes? Cali Exodus.. many good lands left to call own and grow foods for those that are physically fit and able!
VOTE OUT NANCY PELOSI!!!
A friend developed schizophrenia in his 20's. At some point he drifted to California, but he also lived in Arizona and Texas. He was from Maryland. So I know that people migrate to the year round good weather. Many of the homeless have mental illnesses. Governor Reagan was responsible for turning mentally ill people out onto the streets 5 or 6 decades ago in California. There were supposed to be community supports. But you know how that went. Then he became president and finished off what he started in the rest of the country.
So many mentally ill people are in jails in the US - because of course with their behavior they sometimes run afoul of the law. It's easy though, once they are on the street they are bums, moochers, trash people to be reviled - not sick people in need of help and care. Christians, Ha! Many Americans have primitive 17th century beliefs and values brought from our mother country, England. Read some history to understand where all of our horrible attitudes have come from. But we don't have to stay this way. European countries had the same vile ideas but they evolved more humanistic worldviews and implemented them to benefit all the people in their countries.
What a country. It's no wonder other countries look at us with distaste.
America, in general, has a homeless problem, and studies have shown that providing housing for them would be far cheaper than having to install spikes or other methods that have aimed to harm homeless people. Not sure why this country wants to punish homeless people rather than help them.
Woohoo They are not blood related.
This is going to be so bad when they stop paying for rooms.
Plus the ppl being evicted
Yep right back into a depression again
I’d like to see that, I’m curious what ppl would do.
Why would the government ever stop paying for the rooms?
Wouldn't it be cheaper for the government to do these one room eco-friendly shack houses/communities on a massive piece of property that way they are not paying out of there we are free hotel rooms it's more like their tiny one room home.
Greed has destroyed humanity.
And the planet.
Strongly agree. And proper support and free mental health support would go a long way, too. So many have been on the streets because of mental illness and serious childhood trauma. It doesn’t have to be this way.
@Alana Weaver and what would you buy when nothing is being made? Who is supplying the goods we would be buying? This is not the same as 2008. 2008 banks over leveraged and borrowed more than they could ever pay back. 2020 government forced closures for lockdown. I agree with 2008 but not this time.
They definitely don't get an A but to be fair they've been way more proactive than most other state and local governments. For instance the state also has a program to house homeless people in RVs.
Yes they are an A. They don't have to do any of this. They don't have to house anyone they could leave them empty like a lot do. But they decided to help. What did you do to help at least 1 person??
Ya but they don’t have to follow the same standards as us plebs they got a degree and have a high paying job which is like an honor student with perfect grade average
They're trying! It is more than what most of us have done
I'm in the uk. My previous next door neighbour was a guy who had been homeless for a prolonged period of time. He was lucky and got into a temp programme who then helped him get a flat. He had been alcohol dependant and struggled with loneliness in previous attempts at housing. He ended up homeless because of marital brakedown. He was the kindest and most considerate neighbour going out of his way every night to lock the gate and let me know after a burglar tried to break into my flat. And when I was trapped inside due to poverty and disability he would still come and talk to me. People have a perception but sometimes helping someone back onto their feet allows them to support others. Sadly a couple of his friends who had known when homeless passed, they didn't get the chance and support he got. We all need a hand sometimes and it can change lives.
I wish the US were more kind to our homeless. Ive been homeless before and if I didn't get help from someone or I wasn't able to get a security deposit paid for by an agency, I would probably still be homeless. My mental state was very bad and it became a vicious cycle of depression and hopelessness. Now I try to help out when I can because it's so goddamn important to give back and help others.
SF spends one billion anually to aide homeless. That's just one city in CA
The richest country in the world should not have this huge number of homeless folks.
There's 356 million Americans and around 500k-600k homeless in the whole country. That's about 1/600. We need more affordable housing though the places where its worst have very restrictive housing laws and nimbyism.
The richest country in the world...more like the 0.01% of the people here. The rest of us, meaning the 99.99% are struggling. The rich have all the money and pay very little taxes while the rest of us shoulder the burden.
My friend couldn't afford to live in California so He moved to Indiana and bought a home there if you can't survive here leave the state I'm talking to you homeless people What's the point of staying here the drugs Period
Actually, yes it should. America is wealthy because it encourages and nurtures unbridled capitalism. That means that under the current status quo, there will always be people permanently left behind because they lack the tools/support to succeed in a capitalist economy.
Lots of people still want to come to the US. For a shot at the good life.
I actually recognize the faces of some of these homeless people from living in downtown for a year.
This is incredible. It literally hits home. I knew they had hard lives, but I had no idea.
I was homeless in LA For 2 years addicted to coke. Never had one person help me other than a occasional old meal or 5 bucks. You have to make the choice to leave that lifestyle or die in it. They need to be drug testing them and making the priority health issued people that want to actually wanna make the change, and not housing people that keep throwing away they’re lives!
We need the make affordable housing a priority. The effect Covid is having on the economy is going to lead tons of people getting evicted. To many Americans live in denial that they are a few paychecks away from the street themselves. Most Americans don’t have 400 bucks in savings
Yea only in California lol that’s what happens when you get taxed up the ass. Income tax takes away your check and housing tax raises rent. Ooops
I was homeless until I got help. Now what's important is what got me there and how did I get out. I got there by trusting my family, who is supposed to be there for me through thick and thin, rain or shine, that's what I use to believe, but I came to find out that my family never knew that, lmao, I can laugh now, thank GOD. And that is who I thank, IN GOD WE TRUST.
The reason we don’t have affordable housing in California is because we don’t build enough to meet the demand. When you have limited supply and too many people, prices go up it’s very simple economics. All I hear is anger towards landlords. But landlords don’t set the rent it’s market rate which is set by supply and demand. We need to blame local governments and their zoning laws which block more housing construction and people who preach NIMBY-ism not in my backyard, because they think more urban density means less public services and overcrowding/congestion/traffic or scream gentrification and block housing projects. The irony is we may actually see lower rents if tons of people get evicted and lots of units become vacant for long periods.
yeah, if you give a public house to a drug-addicted mentally unbalanced homeless guy, I'm sure his life will change!
@liacashmere58 No way to rehab or save crack-heads. Their brains are literally BURNED OUT by chemicals.
Why rich hotels in LA can’t they use the ones in San Bernardino, hell of a lot cheaper. And why can’t the homeless be hired for the recycling industry after Covid. Torn on this. On one hand, this isn't a permanent solution, but on the other hand, housing people like this can lower crime and overall, give them better treatment and attention to their mental and physical issues. Some can use this opportunity as way to start building themselves up and possibly enter the work force again, as they now have access to a roof over their head, a mailing address, a hot shower, and some meals. The bureaucracy is so thick and full of you know what !!!I can't believe the Housing Authority director saying or giving herself a pat on the back at 100% !!!when we have human carnage on the streets today. Supervisor Janice Hahn.... to say we're not getting participation form hotel/motel owners ...is the problem with County officials and the LA Housing Authority lack of leadership and understanding or caring about the private sectors interest. There's plenty of rooms available especially in the neighborhoods that service and where most of these folks live.... these are the 1000's of small mom and pop boutique motels/hotels 10 to 50 units that are scattered throughout the county. But in a nutshell, I'll tell you why they will not participate.
1) TOT (tax) LA County has waived this process but... it's very unclear how owners can take advantage of this when housing homeless folks through various agencies, this can account in some areas up to 5-13% in fees, so if you're only going to pay owners $50-$75 per night or LESS, when operators can get( $75 to $110) per day from the general public(the city of Long Beach Ca. will not waive the tax and they raised it up from 12% to 13% but they want owners to house people for less than $60 per night minus the 13% tax) all the rooms in the system consist of private rooms and bathrooms cable television air-conditioning and heating, if you minus all these expenses the operator may make $5-$15 or less(from normal rental rate profit of $45-$60 per night) and they have to deal with the tumultuous lifestyle and problems that aren't depicted in this video... that come with housing homeless folks... in some cases due to drug and mental issues..... deduct TOT off the top again, there is a waiver ( in some cities) we've tried calling to figure out how to submit it with no clear-cut answer from the tax assessors office or from local officials.
2) The 30 day transient occupancy problem this is the most problematic of the whole process; motels and hotels are not set up like apartment building owners, they can evict GUEST immediately by calling the police if guest becomes disruptive or aggressive toward staff or other guest from their rooms....if owners allow anyone over 30 days stay, they lose the transient occupancy status and must go to court to remove a individual. There's lots of these motels/hotel owners that were working with County and Nonprofit in the past until the funding ran out or the individual stop communicating with their caseworkers, some were being aggressive towards caseworkers then just left in the motels/ hotels. Now operators.... who are not landlords have to figure out how to remove individuals that are no longer being assisted by the agencies.There's countless of operators that have people who have been there 2+ years and have not paid anything and have severe mental problems/ drug issues and have shown aggression towards other guest and the motel owners or operators.... yes, they can call the police ,they will take them away and sometimes do what's called a "5150" but, you cannot re-rent the room because they are no longer guess, they are tenants "that's the law" and they cannot remove them unless they go to court through the eviction process and as of today we have a moratorium that's been extended again .
I've assisted various landlord and motel operators over the past several years, I've also owned real estate apartments for over 30 years in LA. It's a great narrative when we show people who are homeless what are in the right frame of mind and can communicate on camera but in reality that's just not the overall disposition of folks that need service let's be honest and show the true scope of the problem when it comes to individuals drug and mental problems).
We have a innovative way to help alleviate the problem MLPMLLC.com. We're poised to make available up to 3000 rooms (plus) within the next 6 to 7 months throughout the county but, also provide permanent housing solutions as well. We have banged on county officials and LA Housing Authority's doors with not even a "hey let's sit down and talk" about this. So to say the hotel/motel operators and the landlords are not cooperating is just insulting or to say we have a lack of affordable housing is wrong. Sorry don't mean to offend anyone but.... "It is what it is"!!!!
Very true. Not all homeless are bad or crazy. Most of them simply never had any luck or driving ambition to really earn money. They just gave up.
I stayed at a homeless shelter most of last year I wonder how they are coping with corona or was barracks style 52 people
In many cities, they have closed the shelters and put the homeless in parking lots. It's awful.
In DesMoines they are staying at the fair grounds, but I am wondering if where and how they can shower wash their hands or if the city is providing them food or only a place to stay and if people are spread out enough to social distance.
How does a country manage to send aid abroad when its own citizens lack basic housing, healthcare, and a standard of education commiserate with its wealth and global standing .... as an American I ask myself this regularly.
Come on, it's not impossible.
1. People are housed in hotels. ✔️
2. Help them get jobs, any jobs, beggers can't be choosers.
3. Give them the choice of staying in the hotel or getting their own place all discounted, 50-90%.
I'm sure, them with jobs will make them feel self sufficient, it will put the landlords/hotels at ease and this initiatives burden will lighten.
Although I don't understand what is going on? This is without a doubt a national problem that has made its way to the white house, if a landlord/hotel doesn't want to help, make them help! Not with a militia or deceit, but there are other means.
Come on USA! I'm hearing 40 years of homelessness, an army vet homeless, wtf!? The least the USA could do is look after those that looked after them.
Population in LA County 10 million and 5,5 million in Finland
Homelessness 66 thousand and 5,5 thousand in Finland
1/1000 people in Finland are homeless
1/151 people in LA County are homeless
Checked that as a country USA has much better numbers 1,7 people/1000. In overall there are 567,715 homeless people in USA so it seems LA county is a big mess.
How did you get out of it? Good for you!
It seems like la has a housing issue, which causes a homeless issue. Why not try to attach these individuals with jobs around the us so they can get their lives together instead of letting them remain in a continuous cycle.
Because housing is incredibly expensive in California. And what this video doesn’t show is that many homeless have severe substance abuse problems and mental illness issues. People don’t understand housing in California is kept artificially high using zoning laws and nimby-ism, not in my backyard. The same people that complain about not having affordable housing and the homeless problem actively block any new construction near them because they don’t want high urban density where they live because of increase in traffic, lack of parking, less government resources, overcrowding especially in school districts, noise, pollution, and maybe a tall building will block their view. Another common complaint is they scream gentrification to try and block housing projects. The local government is worse with their zoning laws and regulations. In some areas where it makes sense to build more housing using taller buildings to maximize limited space, local governments have laws that prevent that. Land is scarce and expensive in California. And a combination of all three is why we have a housing and homeless issue. So the cycle continues...
@@FoamandStuff a lot easier to be homeless in southern California too than the Midwest and prairies where the winter is fucked. Even New York compared to LA it gets cold there. And then as you said substance abuse, southern California is a hot spot for drugs being so close to the border with Mexico. In other developed western nations you don't see issues like this.
The more change you give the homeless the more there are. South Park did an episode on it. Your best solution to the homeless crisis is to stop all support for drug-addicted transients. They should be put to work. Or sent to an island for bums like an old leper colony if they won't work. I'm betting California government will just keep throwing money at them and more will spawn from the ether.
Let me get this straight...if you're homeless and a drug addict in Los Angeles, you get free health care and a luxury hotel room...but if you're a hard working American who lost their job, you're screwed. I know a guy who worked his entire life that lost his job a year ago and lives in his truck...
They may be Homeless, but they're not Hotelless
Addiction is the problem
When I was young it would really get to me seeing homeless people begging on the street. I wanted to learn more about why they were there and what could be done to help them so I went downtown San Diego with a tape recorder and started talking to them. What I learned was for many, it's a choice. They put themselves there. I'm less sympathetic now that I'm older. As Ben Franklin who himself went from rags to riches said, the best way to help the poor is to not make them comfortable in their poverty. Do not shield from misery those who choose to wallow in it.
Maybe they tell you that they chose to be there because they are embarrassed and ashamed. What person in their right mind would want to live in that garbage look pile of homeless people?
So I assume the state is paying for these rooms, and more than likely they are forcing the hotels into a fixed rate. They have essentially commandeered private property. This isn't a good thing.
