I gave my last day job (it rhymes with barfucks) a full month's notice, and they tried to demote me from supervisor to cashier on the spot. I told em sure, I don't want the responsibility, but you can't pay me a cent less than I'm getting now or I can, and will, sue for retaliation. They suddenly remembered that law when I impolitely reminded them.
I fell out when you said the person who leaves in mid shift. I left a job after my shift was over. I clocked out, walked out with no intention on ever coming back. Those fools called me for almost a week straight leaving me voicemails, trying to find out if I was going to come back or not. Probably one of the worst experiences I ever had along with many others. It's amazing how supervisors is okay with abusing their power and just expect you to bow down to their nonsense. Lots of love to you! 😊

I ended up getting an apology from the secretary on behalf of the person over me and still being able to use them as a reference. The office manager gave me a good reference even though I quit on the spot with no two weeks notice. Gave me a boost. I was cocky after that like I know damn well I was a good employee when I can quit unprofessionally and still get a good reference. The person over me was terrible and too disrespectful. Followed me around all the time yelling. I wasn't putting up with that ish. Let her be miserable on her own. Her boss gave me a good reference at the end of it all. Lol. Told the new employer, "she was a good worker we wish she came back." Lmaoo.
Well, it's valid for them to wanna know if you are coming back or not: You could be ill, in the hospital or in desperate need of vacation for personal reasons. You might wanna go back to work after x weeks. If you quit, that's also valid. They just need to know, so that they can replace you. They can't read your mind. Replacing you immediately would waste their time and suck for you, if you had a justified reason to stay away from work and wanna continue... But it's a bit funny, I have to admit.
I worked one day at a factory, the air guns for the caulking line absolutely destroyed my wrists after just one day. I knew it was not something I could or should try to adjust to. I'm very particular about how a job makes my wrists and hands feel, it's important to me. So I told a supervisor at the end of the shift that I needed to switch positions. He didn't really say much. Next day I'm right back there on the caulk line. First break comes and I just leave. The job placement service calls me the day after that and tells me they are "black listing" me or whatever. I hung up on them. This is my life and I will dictate how it goes.
Meaning "If they want to buy that ugly hat, let them", or "if they want pineapple and anchovy pizza, give it to them because they're paying for it". It's good and solid advice that has been bastardised by the worst people.
I have heard it as, "the customer is always right, or they're not a customer." Meaning, if they become too much trouble, you don't want their business. But "The customer is always right in matters of taste" makes a lot more sense to me. Thanks for this comment/thread.
Old person here: Back in the day you gave your employer 2 weeks notice, but if your employer canned you they gave you 2 weeks severance. You are correct it supposed to work 2 ways.
Quitting on your own terms is one of the greatest things you will ever accomplish. It almost always results in a better situation than sticking it out.
@@OfficialNice In general, this is why I typically do give 2 weeks. It's not for the employer's sake, it's for your coworkers. The one time I walked out though, the situation was so ridiculous that none of my coworkers begrudged me. They specifically contacted me to say "good for you" and to wish me well. They understood. Sometimes you DO have to do things for yourself.
The most miraculous way ive seen someone quit is they picked up the PA in the store and said "attention customers, something came in the mail today.... DEEZ NUTZZZ" (forgive them it was 2010 lol) and he RAN outta there. I will never forget that for the rest of my life.

Best advice of all here is "If you don't love your job, leave it." I worked a job I absolutely hated for 10 years out of some misguided sense of loyalty. The job constantly preached loyalty, and I loved the people I worked with so I was deluded into thinking I had to be loyal to my work friends who were just as miserable as I was. Know what that loyalty got me? Laid off without notice, on the spot. Your employer will never, EVER, be loyal to you. So never be loyal to your job. If you have monthly staff meetings where the boss constantly preaches about loyalty to the brand, or loyalty and dedication to the company just know that doesn't go both ways. They expect you to be dedicated and loyal to them, but will absolutely cut you loose without hesitation. Be loyal to your spouse. Your job doesn't deserve it. It's business. Go where the money is.
The reality is that most companies won't give a "good reference" regardless. All they will say are the dates you worked. Most HR departments are so afraid of lawsuits they don't want to say shit either way. Just quit if you don't want to be there.
You are so right about the 2 week’s notice. It is bull, especially if the workplace is a hostile and toxic environment. They are just going to treat you even worse or fire you within the 2 weeks.
Two weeks is a courtesy. It's there to let the company prepare to replacing you, set up interviews, etc, since you've likely already secured another job and don't necessarily need the two weeks of pay yourself.
This is an American thing; practically everywhere else has Paid Vacation laws, and in New Zealand (where I live) you're paid the remaining vacation once you complete the contracted leaving period (2 weeks+). So like, if I up and quit, I'd be losing +10,000NZD, and I'm just a commercial cleaner. This also encourages employers to work with you rather than fire you since to terminate a contract, they will still be required to pay the remainder.

I used to work retail. I would train associates and tell them that the customer is always right. After we all had a hearty laugh I would tell them that the customer is always FIRST, with the asterisk being that they are not always smart.

I've now silent quit 2 jobs back to back for unprofessional management... It's actually fun (minus the stress of finding a new job, but I'm always looking anyway)... They call, text, email... My last manager called me at 5am to come in (2 weeks after I quit), and again at 10pm cursing at me for not. I sent the texts and times to district, got her fired, after she'd been working there for 16 years. Don't put up with anyone because they won't put up with you (even if you did nothing wrong, like me). I now have a wonderful job working full time for $25/hr at a hospital as registration... Not planning on quitting this one.
It's wild to me that people can get fired on the spot in the US. That's very illegal in Germany unless there's egregious misconduct and/or illegal activities. There are some specific rules for certain circumstances like hours worked per month or type of contract, but in general, it's two weeks within the first six months of work, and then 1 month afterwards, for both parties. And if you worked at a place for multiple years, it will be several months until the contract ends, although I think that only applies when you're fired and not when you quit
I had a good working relationship with my college workplace and my supervisor told me in private, "I can't stop this, start looking for a gig now. We have to let you go at the end of October. (It was mid May)"
True story. I once told my boss this same exact thing about the two week notice. The next morning he brought it up at our morning meeting, said that he had thought about it all night, and looked one of my co-workers dead in the eye and said, “You got two weeks to find another job.” And then walked off with everyone looking around dumbfounded.
I used to work at Walmart for 4 years just pushing shopping carts back to the entrance. I always took my lunch 5-6 hours in because they couldn't schedule anybody earlier because they deemed evening coverage more important than employees' mental and physical health. And that's if the people scheduled don't walk away and quit before they get there.
I quit Walmart after my first day... Just didn't show up. Why? They lied to me that I'd be in a certain position... And on my first day, said they cancelled the position "but would you mind doing women's clothing?". No, not at all...for the next 2 hours of work, then I quit.
i was in TLE for a year and a half. only reason i lasted that long was i had a great supervisor. i almost got fired for having too much overtime, home office called and the store manager had to explain how it was either i work or the shop closes because they didnt have enough people to keep it open. knew i needed to get a new job after that. now i make 3x more with a way better job and even better work schedule

Most people they tried to hire were still in school and *technically* weren't allowed to use the cart machines with a *technical* 20 cart limit. Shit, we were ALL doing up to 50 at a time! XD Rules be damned, lol. Anytime a manager talked to us about it, we would stick to the rules for about a day, maybe 2. We always told them, it's either we stick to rules or the customers don't have carts. Even tried getting us to use the little hooked straps, that never stuck either. To busy for regulations to be followed. My favorite task was when we were occasionally asked to grab our carts from the rest of the stores on our strip. So I would take a machine and I could do a whole loop from the front to all the way around back of the stores. Sometimes it's around 20-30, but sometimes it's up to 60-70! I still thought those were a fun break. Always had to be careful bringing that much back down the hill, because never used straps meant I alone was the brakes, and sometimes 1 long line would separate into 2 medium lines. Never hit a car, though! (Unless they backed into me, that is.) I kinda miss that job when the weather's perfect, but I'll never go back.

Recently I put my old job on my New Job application when asked why I left I said I quit because of mistreatment and insufficient pay and overworked. Two week notice: for non-professional jobs, sure, but if you’re in a semi-professional or professional role, you WANT to leave appropriately because people who hire in those industries ask for, check, and consider references. But you are right, work cultural expectations have changed a lot since 1965!

I've never believed in "two-weeks notices". People are so easily led and will do things just because someone else told them they should. Putting in notice before you leave a job never made sense to me unless you plan on going back.
Well the thing is you never plan on going back, it just happened if you find yourself without any options. I can tell you for people who live in small towns as opposed to cities, not leaving on good terms is a terrible idea. Even if you don't go back, in a small town the businesses talk to each other. Your new potential jobs will likely hear how you left your last.
I worked at Hobby Lobby for 4 years. I turned in my 2 week notice and they fired me 2 days later. I tried to apply for unemployment and they told the state that i left on my own accord.
Did they give you paper proof of being fired? If so, you should be able to send that to the state. Not sure if Hobby Lobby gives pink slips though, they're a dog-shit company.

Only one of the four jobs I've quit got notice. First one I tried so hard to do my best at but as my mental health took a nosedive only for them to tell me "I know you can do it, it's only gonna get worse, there's no help coming:)" I left maybe an hour before my shift ended and never went back, sent them an email and was done with it! Second one I sent an email while I waited for my ride home in the parking lot after my shift, so long suckers should've taken my HR complaints seriously! Third one I had a panic attack induced by management for a half hour in the bathroom (while clocked in) then just grabbed my shit and walked out. Coworkers there still don't know where the fuck i went cause it was 90 mins into a good shift and then suddenly the only person in the department is gone! Fourth one got a one week notice cause I liked everyone there, my managers did the best they could, but the company is burning and its not my fire to fight. Treat me right if you want a notice. If you're not gonna make this a place I enjoy being in then I'm not sorry to inconvenience you, it's only fair if you're going to inconvenience my livelihood :)
I've always tried to leave jobs on good terms. I've only ever quit without notice once and the reason I did is because that job taught me the hard way how true your last statement is. I gave a two-weeks notice, worked my first week during which most of the managers treated me like absolute dogshit (and a depressing amount of people promised me I'd be back), then I was scheduled for 3 opening shifts in a row (starting at 4am), so I turned my phone off and went to sleep the night before the first one, woke up to 2 missed calls from the opening manager, and that was that. They didn't try calling me in for my last two shifts.
So I've only had a few panic attacks in my life, I think they were illness related. I was getting hammered with multiple things back to back for a bit. Then recently I started getting a few due to our manager that no one likes gaslighting me constantly the past few months. Finally I started filing complaints, going up the chain of command, ccing my boss' boss in certain email interactions (to include her original email she sent me) showing exactly what was going on. I guess she got tired of me fighting back and decided to give me up to a closer building, and better boss or risk me fighting her even harder. Although to be fair at least half of the people at my old building at no longer their and have put in for their transfers as well, or left to elsewhere.
My last job EARNED their 2 week notice. I gave them a one month notice with free consultation afterwards. I am a high level programmer, and this company has given me a TON of leniency during my hard times and my team consists of amazing people I would never want to let down. My job before that EARNED their no-notice quit and drop all major projects I was on, leaving them dead in the water. They screwed me over with benefits, made everyone miserable, and overworked us for measly pay. I laughed in their face on the way out.
I second that. I live in Germany and unions (as far as I know) played a huge part in securing workers right and the laws to back it up. Whenever I hear things like "They will give you a bad reference if you do x." or "They can fire you on the spot without a good reason (like servere misconduct)." I am so glad that I don't work in the USA because that shit is straight up illegal here.
I don't know how it is for other countries but to my knowledge the u.s. is the only country that actually has a thriving industry in Union finding and busting... In fact I actually feel kind of sad for the employees of crappy non-union companies because they'll be in some sort of middle management position 8 out of nowhere you're so crushing monotony is interrupted by someone from higher up the chain seem to actually notice you, you! Now granted they're not going to give you a raise they're just going to give you more responsibility because they know you can handle it, more importantly you know if you help out the company now and see them a little money by not asking for them to pay you for your actual work, surely they will reward you later on... Kind of like when people wouldn't snitch on the mob in exchange for a vague implication of a promise maybe later on. They tell you only you can do this special task, because not only are you a hard worker but you make sure your people know who's the one in charge. Most of all you understand this is my business, it's a family, and sometimes certain selfish members of that family who think they deserve more and other members and to think that they're going to somehow get away with this but refusing to pitch in and help!?! Well they know that you know exactly what type of person that is, in fact you probably know specifically which employee that is who is spreading ideas of disbanding your family atmosphere also they can demand more money, even though the company already pays them so well... The company is even nice enough to not offer things like benefits because those are super confusing and expensive and who wants to deal with that stuff anyway? But you, you're going to save the day I'm making sure all those awful devious people who want to tear your work family apart or held accountable and stopped from turning your job into just a front for communism. I worked in market research and statistical analysis, and that description is almost verbatim the script or response tree that would be used when planting out and organized union-busting activity.

Not all unions are the same they're still just companies I worked with one that didnt pay shit almost impossible to get a raise (there was ranks teir 1-5 depending on experience) but after you hit 5 your supposed to get bumped up to normal pay (pretty much youve proved yourself now you get paid what everyone else does) but most people had to threaten to quit (couple quit out right) to get that raise. And when you did finally get paid what everyone else does you only gwt a 25 CENT raise a YEAR to "battle inflation" like if your gonna battle inflation the pay raise will have to grow with inflation. Not only that after working there for 30 years you get a pention every month of just 1200$ mabey back in the 90s that was good money but today thats not even rent in most places how tf am i supposed to live off 1200$ a month in 2050!!! Point is its all greed the higherups will find a way to fuck you if you like it or not, only diffrence is you get a loli pop at some places and a popsicle at other...

I worked in Germany for years and they have a six-week notice there, but they don't make it awkward for you. Yes, you train up a new person, or if there is no one to take the position, you document how your job is done so they can follow up on it. Here in the States I have given two-week notice twice; at the first one, my boss flipped out and very publicly yelled at me. I stuck out the two weeks so was able to use her as a reference, tho I'm sure she grumbled. The second one I was swimming in the job, totally overwhelmed, on day one. The job wasn't what I thought I'd been hired for. They just told me to figure it out. I walked in the very last day of my three-month probationary period, informed my supervisor that the job is not working for me even though I had tried my best to understand it witht no help from her or anyone else. I gathered my things and went to leave. I had to do an exit interview with HR for some reason, where they tried to blackmail me into staying. Bruh. I went online to Glass Door that afternoon and left a scathing review. F them. My other jobs were as a Contractor; so much eaasier when you know your time there is limited. :D
I wish more people knew about and used Glassdoor! There are several times I haven't even bothered applying for the job, because of the reviews left. I always check now, and I always leave reviews when leaving a company!
Rules of work. 1. People you work with are not your friends. 2. Your company is not a family. 3. You are not obliged to answer emails after work and the weekend. 4. You do not have to tolerate sociopathic managers. 5. Do not allow them to dump other peoples work on you. 6. Do the tasks you were hired for, these are the things you and your employer agreed upon. If you are pressured to do so, demand a raise. 7. When your manager says the company had a record breaking quarter and to show appreciation they throw a pizza party rather than giving bonuses find another job. 8. If you are being harassed or you work in a hostile environment, HR is not your friend or ally. HR exists to protect the company not you. I’m retired now. I would not work in any corporate setting. The company landscape has changed becoming a desolate wasteland where CEO’s regard the employees that help made them rich with the same disregard as bags of trash.
Agreed with all accept for 1 and sometimes 2. I don't think I've ever worked somewhere where my coworkers didn't become my friends, and I've retained friends from those jobs long after I've left them. Some companies really can be a family, though it definitely is rare.
I'm a bit late but in the UK we have contracts and things that protect the employee so if they fire you for no reason, you just take them to court/tribunal and because you signed a legal document it makes the company as a whole look very bad. I know in Canada (where I'm from) there's nothing like that. If I ever move back I'll be making sure I get written docs for everything involving a job.
In most states in the U.S. you have to take them to court, then you have to prove that you didn't do what they claimed you did when terminating you. If you have no proof they're lying, you're kind of screwed.
@@FredrickTesla One of the main reasons why I moved from Canada. No contacts, government favours the employer, rarely any benefits or healthcare/medical insurance. Over here you can pay roughly £10 a month and get any prescription, any amount of meds, as much as you need and no extra cost.

Lol when I was 16 I worked at dunkin donuts and I worked Halloween night. My friends were having a blast and stopped by to visit. They left me some vodka hidden out back. I eventually couldn't take the FOMO, walked out, got my vodka and caught up with my friends. Lesson: do anything you want in your youth, dunkin donuts ain't gonna matter on your deathbed
Dude I would get high on my lunch breaks back in the day so I get it. On top of that I was still the most competent employee they had. Retail is a hell of a job I am glad I am not doing that anymore.
The part about the customers being wrong is all too true. They are part of why I am not a Supervisor anymore. One to-go order customer said he didn't get half of his order. That is not at all a rare thing, which is why I do random audits. I literally pull everything out of the bag, and inspect each item. So, I told him to bring his receipt. He brought in the itemized receipt, the one stapled to the bag. In addition to everything on the list having a check mark, the receipt had MY signature on it, which indicated I myself audited that order before I allowed the to-go team to hand it out. I once watched a Mexican lady put the entire table's silverware into her purse, only to have her call for a Manager (me) to the table, and say the Host never gave them any silverware. Really? I know the silverware is in your purse, because I WATCHED you put it there. For that alone, I could escort her out for stealing. But now adding lying to it, and blaming it on my Hosts? That is not going to happen. At the height of the BLM thing, a black dude came in, saying "I want a burger, but I am NOT going to pay for it." I asked what he meant, and he kept saying he should get free food because it is racial restitution. I denied him service at all. About a month later, I hear an altercation going on. Turns out, that racial restitution guy came in again, got sat, got served, ATE his food, and is now yelling at the server about how he is NOT going to pay for his food. The worst part was when he SPIT on the server. Police were called. He was Trespassed. The next time he came in, he got arrested. Of course, we also cannot forgot the end of the lockdown last year. We had ridiculous numbers of customers who ranted about being required to wear masks, and how that was somehow OUR fault. If you have a problem with the masks, DON'T yell at the symptoms. Deal with the root cause of the disease. In other words, instead of being angry at the restaurant, go to the Capitol, and pound on the Governor's door. The Governor made the law, so go deal with the Governor about the law. That is how change happens. So, are customers always right? Not even close. Most customers are orderly enough. However, most of the ones who complain are doing it to take advantage of anyone dumb enough to give in. I learned the hard way how being a Supervisor means you spend 90% of the day being a security guard. It was not worth the pay.
I work at a truck stop right now, the amount of BS I've had to deal with. Me and our chef who isn't even supposed to be working with customers at all. Regulars that come into the store complain about us behind our backs, I mean I had one guy get angry for not turning on the gasoline pump for him. For reference if you turn it on from inside the store, it bounces back into the store unpaid. So if somebody drives off it comes out of our paycheck. So I'm not turning on the pump for him, he comes inside and get's angry before marching to my managers office. Since she wasn't there I smiled evilly at him and said if he had any problems he could address them WITH me. Doesn't surprise me that he went behind my back and talked BS to my manager and coworkers. Now multiple this by three, from customer's throwing wallets, IDs and all manner of things. I don't give a crap anymore, I haven't denied anyone service but there are a few people I've gotten real freaking close to. Nowadays I'm just waiting for someone to make my day, be an asshole and you can get gas at the next stop. Another regular I considered my friend just walked straight out on me because he could get fuel elsewhere, that hurt so I'm not talking to him anymore. That's not even mentioning how hard the job is like, I swear to God if I have to empty one more trashcan full of p*ss bottles. God man, nothing has made me hate Humanity more than customer service.
Spitting on someone is considered assault. Racial restitution guy should have been charged with assault as well as trespassed. Also, being a supervisor is never worth the pay.
Their should be cameras at every drive thru. That way, if there is a freeloading repeat customer, then you can read their order back to them, have them confirm said order, then there is no way that they can free load. Seriously, fast food has kept me alive for a great part of my adult life. I respect and love any of you, whom take my menu order, and seemingly always cook and get it together in like 5 minutes, always under 10. It takes me that long to thaw a Hungry Man in the microwave, yet alone grill a burger. If you have to take out your frustration and spit in the food, then please twist it in real good so that I don't notice, I probably deserve it anyway, for being a fallible, sinful human being. Since you enjoy epic quits, you'll love this one: I worked at IBM, and had top level duties supporting a medical company (undisclosed due to NDA). I didn't get any extra pay for the extra duties, but did have the extra stress that came with it, along with being underpaid for the support provided. I decided to put in my 2 weeks notice, after I found another job (stay with me now). I went to collect on my paid time off during the 2 week period (which is required to be provided by law), they refused to give me the time off, so I asked for the pay instead (also required by law if time off is refused), which was also denied of course (illegal practice). Due to the fact I was denied both of them, I made sure to just walk out during the busiest part of my shift instead, and gave back the work laptop along with my badge, then hung out with one of the cool team leads and their primary team for a few hours and bought some Pizza for all of us. This video resonates so much with what I and my colleagues have been going through and saying at our last job. We would see some people do things they weren't supposed to and get off scot free, but those of us that do our work got targeted by management, because we always made comments about how they just sit in an airconditioned office the whole day, making PowerPoint Presentations. I've seen colleagues been dragged when they really didn't deserve it and when management stepped in, just double down on it and hold them hostage saying that they can't quit and that they must finish their contracts. Absolutely despicable! They don't value the fact that you're always early and submit stellar work and are just a great employee, but when you say you won't be signing another contract, they have surprised Pikachu faces like 'bUt YoU'rE sO gOoD aNd We LiKe HaViNg YoU hErE'. Eat me!
COVID and the Great Resignation have done a lot. Turns out employees are important and should be treated as such. If they could automate those jobs away they would have done so already.

I always feel self conscious about confronting mistakes because ultimately so many customers lie so often about stuff that when you get someone who is being legitimately honest they get brushed off. The server can and have made mistakes too, but yeah.. the customer is definitely not always right.

Like yeah, if you got shit going on, give em a heads up you'll be a bit late and if they're a good employer they'll understand. Oh man, I was a massage therapist for 8 years. I worked myself so hard, I got super sick. Turns out I have a connective tissue disorder and really hurt myself. Also, last massage studio i worked at, we rarely got lunch breaks. Bites in-between clients is the norm. Appreciate your massage therapists guys, please, cause its soooooooo much work.
I get rule #1…except in many jobs, other workers’ clock-out time depends on the next employee’s clock-in time. If you are late, you are preventing the employee from getting off on time. And if they have already worked a double, and know they have to be back in 7 hours, your selfishness prevents your coworkers from getting their sleep. And by the way, people who are chronically late will never work a double, but will happily work holidays to get the extra pay. It’s not always about your boss; it’s about your coworkers, too. If you don’t like your job, quit. But don’t make lives any more miserable for people who also have to work there. Trust me. You treat your coworkers like that, good luck getting any help at work when you need it.
Mostly agreed, but at the same time, I'm leaving at my scheduled time unless I choose to stay later for someone's benefit. About the only job I can see where you stay no matter what are jobs where someone's life depends on it, like medical services.

Not all jobs strictly ask for professional references. You can substitute character references in if they don't. In any case, the references are the last thing our workplace checks before making a final yes/no decision, and it's basically a done deal by that point unless one of the references gives a bad one. Honestly, your resume and cover letter are more important than your references. Don't fall for the trap of making one resume and throwing it at every job you apply to. You need to read the job listing, find out what skills they're looking for, then make a point of highlighting how your prior work/life experience demonstrate that you have those skills, or that you are at least trainable in those areas. You need to write a cover letter that indicates your clear intent, that is, why you want to work with that group, and why you are right for the job. Talk about your personal/professional skills and experience, specifically those that are relevant to the job posting which basically always straight up tell you what they're looking for. How does it factor into a potential career path, even if that path takes you to another workplace in the future? I cannot tell you how many resumes I end up passing over (that might have been perfectly good hires) because people are lazy with their cookie cutter application and make no effort to actually tailor it to our job listing. That's where you hear the horror stories of people applying to dozens, hundreds of jobs before getting any interviews. That's mostly because their resume sucked, not because the market is competitive (though that may be a factor.) To give an example, my workplace does basic IT support for a university. We support all students/staff/faculty, mostly over the phone. We look for folks that preferably have both technical experience either through work or their personal endeavors, and some customer service experience, especially if it involves phone work. I'll get an application from someone who is a programmer/developer, with no work history in customer service. No CS already isn't ideal, but that's easily trainable depending on the candidate. However, as a programmer/developer, the tech xp is mostly irrelevant... but they COULD talk about how the programming/development process involves frequent troubleshooting to solve code errors and bugs. They could talk about how they solved their client's/colleagues problems with the app they've developed, or regularly collaborated with remote clients/developers. That turns seemingly irrelevant experience into very relevant experience. But they almost never do that. They just tell us all the cool coding projects they've done. That might be fine for a developer/programming job, but it means nothing to us, because I cannot assume that they have the skills we are looking for based off the information they've provided. Sure they could tell us about that stuff in an interview, but I've already passed them up for the resume that did a better job of indicating they possessed the skills we were looking for in the first place. I only get around to interviewing them if those other folks don't pan out and I haven't received anything better since. Your resume is how you sell yourself on the job market, and every customer needs a different angle. It's more work, but you will get more interviews if you make that effort.
Always pick your fav coworker/work bestie who had some idea of how you were at your job and just give them as your reference. I always do that when I can tell a job is going downhill. The applications basically never say it has to be your boss/supervisor/admin anyway, just a work reference ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5:45 not really. Don't get me wrong, I get it. There is the occasional karen who does exactly as you describe. However, I have such a problem with how bad my orders come out that I've taken to ordering only simple things from menus so that way the employees (not even the cashier most of the time) won't mess it up. Example: I order the Baconator at Wendy's every time not because I want the Baconator, but because raw tomato's can kill me and no matter what I order they always seem to slap a tomato on it even when I tell them I have an allergy, except when I order the Baconator, most of the time. Another example: when I order a Mcdouble from McDonalds, why the fuck is there shredded lettuce on my Mcdouble? I didn't order it that way, yet someone is such a monumental failure at life every, almost visit to a fast food place involved me having to reorder. There was one time I had to have them refund my money because I ordered to Mcdoubles and they had to remake it 4 times because they kept putting lettuce on it. So I got my refund and stopped trying to eat at that McDonalds. It's to the point I just don't eat out anymore. Sometimes, not always, the customer just has really shitty luck.
I got lucky with my 3rd transfer to my new job. The first thing my boss said (after having mostly stressful, petty, catty bosses) was "were mostly a laid back office, as long as you do your work then were happy" been working here since then and hoping my boss never leaves anytime soon.

I once quit during my shift (2 hours before my shift end) because of the the "sanitary manager" who kept going on and on ranting about how I would be fired if he see any drop of water around the kitchen. 😃 when I just finished wiping the kitchen, it was all nice and dry and I went to bring food to the customer (i worked as a server but they made me do dishwashing and cleaning the kitchen bc it was during the pandemic and they couldnt affort hiring another staff) one of the chefts washed their hands and splashed water all over the place. I went back to the kitchen after bringing food to the customer and the sanitary manager (he called himself that) scoled me because there were 2 drops of water on the door of the fridge. I explained that I just wiped it 2 minutes ago but he insisted that I was the one splashing water all around. I went and told the other manager (there were 4 people working there and 3 of them called themselves the manager) and told him that I will leave right now. And I left :)) there were a lot of arguements before when that guy just blamed every mistakes on me and so many other problems, not just the sanitary thing. After i left, of course they were short of staffs. The owner apologized and asked me if i could come and help for 2 days but rejected because that asshole never apologized to me

Oh, yeah, if the employers want you to do the work of two or more positions that were never discussed in your job description, reply with adjustments in pay to reflect the additional duties. Otherwise, they can pound sand. They want to overwork you, they can compensate you. And....never be the one that is great at a job or task. You *will* be stuck there. Because you are now "the one who can get it done". Been there, hated that.

Don't quit on the spot. Be such a liability to your workplace that they fire you and have to continue paying you or can be sued. Like, apply for another job and start going to the new job instead of the old one, which forces them to fire you, but you already have another line of work. Having workers is like running a sports team, you motivate and you make sure people are fit and you get 110% work out of them, and it is the little things, polite treatment, snacks, keeping the workspace clean and in good repair, things that costs you little but is a huge morale boost. Best is if your worker gets the cold sweat contemplating working somewhere else. I always check the entrance for the workers in places i document, if it looks like shit then there is little hope that the company produces legit stuff, they lack the brains to make sure the things that make everything run smooth are taken care of.

I worked at an Uno's Pizzeria that eventually closed down back in late 2000's.. (Chicago suburb). They sent in to GM's to try and clean house, start a delivery service..Told us we we were the "pioneers". 😅 and I even took 14 hours of my time to create a take-out menu, and they had me sit down with the CEO! long story short.. GM's were rightfully fired.. skimping on all our weekly pay, and I caught wind before the storm. Promised "$5.00 before tip" driving.. and 8 dollars and hour.. GMO's had us doing ALLLL THE WORK!!! After the first 2 weeks, hearing "it will be next week".. fun fact, come closer, little too close, take me out for diner first. I would eventually walk in, clock in, and walk right tf out.. because they have to at least pay for the one hour, no matter what. I knew I wouldn't get it, but I just felt like having fun with it. 😅Just like the GM's who had us deliver no tip, free pizza's.. to cigar bars and putting ranges, so they can benefit off our absolute meaningless reasons to work there. That's why they got fired, and I remember them smooth talking other employees about the situation.. I laughed in their face, and told them "i've done more to help this place out, and you both are General Managers?" They just barked orders, while grooming us hardly 18 years olds.. with their sweet talk.. ALL THEY DID!
Started working my first retail job ever as a sales rep for cable and internet this year. I learned that TCIW very quickly. A lot of them do lie. And lie a lot. Trying to get whatever free services they can as possible. When I first started I was empathetic to how much people had to pay for cable even though I don't use it myself. That empathy changed quickly when I realized something simple. You agreed to those services and prices and now you're shitting on my doorstep over it.
"You've become the very thing you swore to destroy!" Kidding. But yeah, as long as they're nice to you, try not to be too upset about it. A lot of people are barely making it and getting bumped down to that first-year rate could mean they can make another bill this month.
I am German and it always amazes me how easily a worker in the U.S. can be fcked over. It took some time (decades) for our Unions to get us to the level of job security but that has something to do with the Unions working for their well being of their members, not being infiltrated by the mafia and become a cash cow for them.
It used to be a lot better in the US some decades ago but corporations and conservative lawmakers have convinced a lot of people that unions are bad for the economy and just drive up prices due to increased costs. It's amazing how many people will vote directly against their own best interests.
In my industry (I work at a retailer warehouse as a cherry picker driver) People simply get worked to death and just don't show back up, or get fired for 'not being productive enough' like we're a bunch of robots. EVERYTHING in retail is like this. Retail companies do not deserve your 2 weeks notice

I’m never on time. My company has to deal with it. It has no people. They are actually having to shut down locations because their reputation is so bad and no one is filling out applications. For respect to my hard working coworkers I won’t give up the name. Lunch break: My company took those away. No problem. Pay raise: …. This is just a joke at this point. People in my company are getting laughed at when they ask. Go back to my first rambling paragraph, focus on the lack of employees point I made. This is WHY. My company is paying at most 13 dollars an hour. Everyone else is paying 15 and most are paying higher. Customer isn’t always right: Yup. But our managers don’t blame our employees. We’re basically hanging up on the owner at this point. It’s wonderful. It’s glorious. Opinions: ….agree. Two week notice: Not planning on giving one. No one does. Most they get is a one week notice. And their lucky when people give them that. No one is replacing these people. I actually plan to quiet quit myself. No fireworks needed. No call no show works for me once I have another job lined up. Or better yet. As soon as I get the call I’m accepted to said new job in a middle of a shift.
I planned to quit my job at Corrections right before Christmas, so I put in for a 2 week paid vacation for the last 2 weeks of December all the way as early as September. I got the vacation approved by the Warden, then at the end of my shift on the last day before I went on vacation, I handed my 2 week notice to the Lt. in charge of my shift. So my last 2 weeks of work were a paid vacation spent with family during Christmas and New Years. That’s my favorite way to quit a job.
I agree that there are a lot of people that try to milk the system and say their order got messed up when it didn't but my order has also genuinely gotten messed up many times cause fast food kitchens can get very chaotic and it is very easy for things to get missed or misunderstood. But I'm always nice about it when I ask them to fix it and honestly most of the time I don't bother. I just eat whatever they gave me instead. I've actually found some new menu items that way.
I once got the wrong order at a Logan's and was like, "Oh, sorry, we wanted the steak version of this dish, not the fish :)." And three separate individuals, including the manager came by to apologize. Repeatedly. And we were like, "It's fine. Really. We just wanted steak." I don't want to know how often they'd been screamed at to warrant that level of panic and apology for a simple mistake.
@@goldenphoenixnaruto - this. When it comes to food orders I only bring up mistakes if it makes the food inedible, and I am as calm and polite as possible when I do it. Mistakes happen, I don't doubt things can get chaotic, and I know it wasn't on purpose. There's no reason to rant and rave or demand refunds/free stuff - the people who do that are 100% angling to get something for nothing.

I gave my last day job (it rhymes with barfucks) a full month's notice, and they tried to demote me from supervisor to cashier on the spot. I told em sure, I don't want the responsibility, but you can't pay me a cent less than I'm getting now or I can, and will, sue for retaliation. They suddenly remembered that law when I impolitely reminded them.

I fell out when you said the person who leaves in mid shift. I left a job after my shift was over. I clocked out, walked out with no intention on ever coming back. Those fools called me for almost a week straight leaving me voicemails, trying to find out if I was going to come back or not. Probably one of the worst experiences I ever had along with many others. It's amazing how supervisors is okay with abusing their power and just expect you to bow down to their nonsense. Lots of love to you! 😊

I ended up getting an apology from the secretary on behalf of the person over me and still being able to use them as a reference. The office manager gave me a good reference even though I quit on the spot with no two weeks notice. Gave me a boost. I was cocky after that like I know damn well I was a good employee when I can quit unprofessionally and still get a good reference. The person over me was terrible and too disrespectful. Well, it's valid for them to wanna know if you are coming back or not:
You could be ill, in the hospital or in desperate need of vacation for personal reasons. You might wanna go back to work after x weeks.
If you quit, that's also valid. They just need to know, so that they can replace you. They can't read your mind.
Replacing you immediately would waste their time and suck for you, if you had a justified reason to stay away from work and wanna continue...
But it's a bit funny, I have to admit.
I worked one day at a factory, the air guns for the caulking line absolutely destroyed my wrists after just one day. I knew it was not something I could or should try to adjust to. I'm very particular about how a job makes my wrists and hands feel, it's important to me.
So I told a supervisor at the end of the shift that I needed to switch positions. He didn't really say much. Next day I'm right back there on the caulk line. First break comes and I just leave. The job placement service calls me the day after that and tells me they are "black listing" me or whatever. I hung up on them.
This is my life and I will dictate how it goes.

The one time I walked out though, the situation was so ridiculous that none of my coworkers begrudged me. They specifically contacted me to say "good for you" and to wish me well. They understood.

The most miraculous way ive seen someone quit is they picked up the PA in the store and said "attention customers, something came in the mail today.... DEEZ NUTZZZ" (forgive them it was 2010 lol) and he RAN outta there. I will never forget that for the rest of my life.

Best advice of all here is "If you don't love your job, leave it."
I worked a job I absolutely hated for 10 years out of some misguided sense of loyalty. The job constantly preached loyalty, and I loved the people I worked with so I was deluded into thinking I had to be loyal to my work friends who were just as miserable as I was.
Know what that loyalty got me? Laid off without notice, on the spot. Your employer will never, EVER, be loyal to you. So never be loyal to your job. If you have monthly staff meetings where the boss constantly preaches about loyalty to the brand, or loyalty and dedication to the company just know that doesn't go both ways. They expect you to be dedicated and loyal to them, but will absolutely cut you loose without hesitation. Be loyal to your spouse. Your job doesn't deserve it. It's business. Go where the money is.

The reality is that most companies won't give a "good reference" regardless. All they will say are the dates you worked. Most HR departments are so afraid of lawsuits they don't want to say shit either way. Just quit if you don't want to be there.
You are so right about the 2 week’s notice. It is bull, especially if the workplace is a hostile and toxic environment. They are just going to treat you even worse or fire you within the 2 weeks.
Two weeks is a courtesy. It's there to let the company prepare to replacing you, set up interviews, etc, since you've likely already secured another job and don't necessarily need the two weeks of pay yourself.

This is an American thing; practically everywhere else has Paid Vacation laws, and in New Zealand (where I live) you're paid the remaining vacation once you complete the contracted leaving period (2 weeks+).
So like, if I up and quit, I'd be losing +10,000NZD, and I'm just a commercial cleaner.
This also encourages employers to work with you rather than fire you since to terminate a contract, they will still be required to pay the remainder.
The 🇺🇸 was built on forced labor and these companies are still using those same practices on paid employees. Also thank Ronald Reagan for getting workers in the 80's to vote against unionized jobs in favor of big business. Now yo silly self is making $15hr with a masters degree😂😂😂😂

I used to work retail. I would train associates and tell them that the customer is always right.
After we all had a hearty laugh I would tell them that the customer is always FIRST, with the asterisk being that they are not always smart.
Literally my HR rep said virtually the same thing when training me lol. Still in retail....

I've now silent quit 2 jobs back to back for unprofessional management... It's actually fun (minus the stress of finding a new job, but I'm always looking anyway)... They call, text, email... My last manager called me at 5am to come in (2 weeks after I quit), and again at 10pm cursing at me for not. I sent the texts and times to district, got her fired, after she'd been working there for 16 years.
Don't put up with anyone because they won't put up with you (even if you did nothing wrong, like me).
I now have a wonderful job working full time for $25/hr at a hospital as registration... Not planning on quitting this one.
Also, the potential awkward strain on every relationship there...

It's wild to me that people can get fired on the spot in the US. That's very illegal in Germany unless there's egregious misconduct and/or illegal activities.
There are some specific rules for certain circumstances like hours worked per month or type of contract, but in general, it's two weeks within the first six months of work, and then 1 month afterwards, for both parties.
And if you worked at a place for multiple years, it will be several months until the contract ends, although I think that only applies when you're fired and not when you quit
I had a good working relationship with my college workplace and my supervisor told me in private, "I can't stop this, start looking for a gig now. We have to let you go at the end of October. (It was mid May)"
True story. I once told my boss this same exact thing about the two week notice. The next morning he brought it up at our morning meeting, said that he had thought about it all night, and looked one of my co-workers dead in the eye and said, “You got two weeks to find another job.” And then walked off with everyone looking around dumbfounded.
I used to work at Walmart for 4 years just pushing shopping carts back to the entrance. I always took my lunch 5-6 hours in because they couldn't schedule anybody earlier because they deemed evening coverage more important than employees' mental and physical health. And that's if the people scheduled don't walk away and quit before they get there.
I quit Walmart after my first day... Just didn't show up. Why? They lied to me that I'd be in a certain position... And on my first day, said they cancelled the position "but would you mind doing women's clothing?". No, not at all...for the next 2 hours of work, then I quit.
i was in TLE for a year and a half. only reason i lasted that long was i had a great supervisor. i almost got fired for having too much overtime, home office called and the store manager had to explain how it was either i work or the shop closes because they didnt have enough people to keep it open. knew i needed to get a new job after that. now i make 3x more with a way better job and even better work schedule

@@TheUnseenPath I wasn't even on closing shift, either. My hours were mostly 10AM-7PM. Most people they tried to hire were still in school and *technically* weren't allowed to use the cart machines with a *technical* 20 cart limit.
Shit, we were ALL doing up to 50 at a time! XD Rules be damned, lol. Anytime a manager talked to us about it, we would stick to the rules for about a day, maybe 2. We always told them, it's either we stick to rules or the customers don't have carts. Even tried getting us to use the little hooked straps, that never stuck either. To busy for regulations to be followed.
My favorite task was when we were occasionally asked to grab our carts from the rest of the stores on our strip. So I would take a machine and I could do a whole loop from the front to all the way around back of the stores. Sometimes it's around 20-30, but sometimes it's up to 60-70! I still thought those were a fun break. Always had to be careful bringing that much back down the hill, because never used straps meant I alone was the brakes, and sometimes 1 long line would separate into 2 medium lines. Never hit a car, though! (Unless they backed into me, that is.) I kinda miss that job when the weather's perfect, but I'll never go back.

Recently I put my old job on my New Job application when asked why I left I said I quit because of mistreatment and insufficient pay and overworked. Almost broke my hand busted my finger because a Coworker wasn't paying attention yet they asked me to finish my shift because they were short of staff.
What does that tell you they don't care about your well being.

Two week notice: for non-professional jobs, sure, but if you’re in a semi-professional or professional role, you WANT to leave appropriately because people who hire in those industries ask for, check, and consider references. But you are right, work cultural expectations have changed a lot since 1965!

I've never believed in "two-weeks notices". People are so easily led and will do things just because someone else told them they should. Putting in notice before you leave a job never made sense to me unless you plan on going back.
Well the thing is you never plan on going back, it just happened if you find yourself without any options. I can tell you for people who live in small towns as opposed to cities, not leaving on good terms is a terrible idea. Even if you don't go back, in a small town the businesses talk to each other. Your new potential jobs will likely hear how you left your last.
In my state, if you want to be paid for all your un-used leave/vacation time, you have to give 2 weeks notice.

I worked at Hobby Lobby for 4 years. I turned in my 2 week notice and they fired me 2 days later. I tried to apply for unemployment and they told the state that i left on my own accord.
Did they give you paper proof of being fired? If so, you should be able to send that to the state. Not sure if Hobby Lobby gives pink slips though, they're a dog-shit company.

Only one of the four jobs I've quit got notice. First one I tried so hard to do my best at but as my mental health took a nosedive only for them to tell me "I know you can do it, it's only gonna get worse, there's no help coming:)" I left maybe an hour before my shift ended and never went back, sent them an email and was done with it! Second one I sent an email while I waited for my ride home in the parking lot after my shift, so long suckers should've taken my HR complaints seriously! Third one I had a panic attack induced by management for a half hour in the bathroom (while clocked in) then just grabbed my shit and walked out. Coworkers there still don't know where the fuck i went cause it was 90 mins into a good shift and then suddenly the only person in the department is gone! Fourth one got a one week notice cause I liked everyone there, my managers did the best they could, but the company is burning and its not my fire to fight.
Treat me right if you want a notice. If you're not gonna make this a place I enjoy being in then I'm not sorry to inconvenience you, it's only fair if you're going to inconvenience my livelihood :)

you must have worked in retail because so many jobs I worked I ran into similar issues.
I've always tried to leave jobs on good terms. I've only ever quit without notice once and the reason I did is because that job taught me the hard way how true your last statement is. I gave a two-weeks notice, worked my first week during which most of the managers treated me like absolute dogshit (and a depressing amount of people promised me I'd be back), then I was scheduled for 3 opening shifts in a row (starting at 4am), so I turned my phone off and went to sleep the night before the first one, woke up to 2 missed calls from the opening manager, and that was that. They didn't try calling me in for my last two shifts.
So I've only had a few panic attacks in my life, I think they were illness related. I was getting hammered with multiple things back to back for a bit. Then recently I started getting a few due to our manager that no one likes gaslighting me constantly the past few months. Finally I started filing complaints, going up the chain of command, ccing my boss' boss in certain email interactions (to include her original email she sent me) showing exactly what was going on.
I guess she got tired of me fighting back and decided to give me up to a closer building, and better boss or risk me fighting her even harder. Although to be fair at least half of the people at my old building at no longer their and have put in for their transfers as well, or left to elsewhere.
My last job EARNED their 2 week notice. I gave them a one month notice with free consultation afterwards.
I am a high level programmer, and this company has given me a TON of leniency during my hard times and my team consists of amazing people I would never want to let down.
My job before that EARNED their no-notice quit and drop all major projects I was on, leaving them dead in the water. They screwed me over with benefits, made everyone miserable, and overworked us for measly pay. I laughed in their face on the way out.

I second that. I live in Germany and unions (as far as I know) played a huge part in securing workers right and the laws to back it up. Whenever I hear things like "They will give you a bad reference if you do x." or "They can fire you on the spot without a good reason (like servere misconduct)." I am so glad that I don't work in the USA because that shit is straight up illegal here.
I don't know how it is for other countries but to my knowledge the u.s. is the only country that actually has a thriving industry in Union finding and busting... In fact I actually feel kind of sad for the employees of crappy non-union companies because they'll be in some sort of middle management position 8 out of nowhere you're so crushing monotony is interrupted by someone from higher up the chain seem to actually notice you, you! Now granted they're not going to give you a raise they're just going to give you more responsibility because they know you can handle it, more importantly you know if you help out the company now and see them a little money by not asking for them to pay you for your actual work, surely they will reward you later on... Kind of like when people wouldn't snitch on the mob in exchange for a vague implication of a promise maybe later on. They tell you only you can do this special task, because not only are you a hard worker but you make sure your people know who's the one in charge. Most of all you understand this is my business, it's a family, and sometimes certain selfish members of that family who think they deserve more and other members and to think that they're going to somehow get away with this but refusing to pitch in and help!?! Well they know that you know exactly what type of person that is, in fact you probably know specifically which employee that is who is spreading ideas of disbanding your family atmosphere also they can demand more money, even though the company already pays them so well... The company is even nice enough to not offer things like benefits because those are super confusing and expensive and who wants to deal with that stuff anyway? But you, you're going to save the day I'm making sure all those awful devious people who want to tear your work family apart or held accountable and stopped from turning your job into just a front for communism.
I worked in market research and statistical analysis, and that description is almost verbatim the script or response tree that would be used when planting out and organized union-busting activity.

Not all unions are the same they're still just companies I worked with one that didnt pay shit almost impossible to get a raise (there was ranks teir 1-5 depending on experience) but after you hit 5 your supposed to get bumped up to normal pay (pretty much youve proved yourself now you get paid what everyone else does) but most people had to threaten to quit (couple quit out right) to get that raise. And when you did finally get paid what everyone else does you only gwt a 25 CENT raise a YEAR to "battle inflation" like if your gonna battle inflation the pay raise will have to grow with inflation. Not only that after working there for 30 years you get a pention every month of just 1200$ mabey back in the 90s that was good money but today thats not even rent in most places how tf am i supposed to live off 1200$ a month in 2050!!! Point is its all greed the higherups will find a way to fuck you if you like it or not, only diffrence is you get a loli pop at some places and a popsicle at other...

I worked in Germany for years and they have a six-week notice there, but they don't make it awkward for you. Yes, you train up a new person, or if there is no one to take the position, you document how your job is done so they can follow up on it.
Here in the States I have given two-week notice twice; at the first one, my boss flipped out and very publicly yelled at me. I stuck out the two weeks so was able to use her as a reference, tho I'm sure she grumbled.
The second one I was swimming in the job, totally overwhelmed, on day one. The job wasn't what I thought I'd been hired for. They just told me to figure it out. I walked in the very last day of my three-month probationary period, informed my supervisor that the job is not working for me even though I had tried my best to understand it witht no help from her or anyone else. I gathered my things and went to leave. I had to do an exit interview with HR for some reason, where they tried to blackmail me into staying. Bruh. I went online to Glass Door that afternoon and left a scathing review. F them.
My other jobs were as a Contractor; so much eaasier when you know your time there is limited. :D
I wish more people knew about and used Glassdoor! There are several times I haven't even bothered applying for the job, because of the reviews left. I always check now, and I always leave reviews when leaving a company!

If you are pressured to do so, demand a raise. 7. When your manager says the company had a record breaking quarter and to show appreciation they throw a pizza party rather than giving bonuses find another job. 8. If you are being harassed or you work in a hostile environment, HR is not your friend or ally. HR exists to protect the company not you. I’m retired now. I would not work in any corporate setting. The company landscape has changed becoming a desolate wasteland where CEO’s regard the employees that help made them rich with the same disregard as bags of trash.
Agreed with all accept for 1 and sometimes 2. I don't think I've ever worked somewhere where my coworkers didn't become my friends, and I've retained friends from those jobs long after I've left them. Some companies really can be a family, though it definitely is rare.
I'm a bit late but in the UK we have contracts and things that protect the employee so if they fire you for no reason, you just take them to court/tribunal and because you signed a legal document it makes the company as a whole look very bad. I know in Canada (where I'm from) there's nothing like that. If I ever move back I'll be making sure I get written docs for everything involving a job.
In most states in the U.S. you have to take them to court, then you have to prove that you didn't do what they claimed you did when terminating you. If you have no proof they're lying, you're kind of screwed.
@@FredrickTesla One of the main reasons why I moved from Canada. No contacts, government favours the employer, rarely any benefits or healthcare/medical insurance. Over here you can pay roughly £10 a month and get any prescription, any amount of meds, as much as you need and no extra cost.

The part about the customers being wrong is all too true. They are part of why I am not a Supervisor anymore.
One to-go order customer said he didn't get half of his order. That is not at all a rare thing, which is why I do random audits. I literally pull everything out of the bag, and inspect each item. So, I told him to bring his receipt. He brought in the itemized receipt, the one stapled to the bag. In addition to everything on the list having a check mark, the receipt had MY signature on it, which indicated I myself audited that order before I allowed the to-go team to hand it out.
I once watched a Mexican lady put the entire table's silverware into her purse, only to have her call for a Manager (me) to the table, and say the Host never gave them any silverware. Really? I know the silverware is in your purse, because I WATCHED you put it there. For that alone, I could escort her out for stealing. But now adding lying to it, and blaming it on my Hosts? That is not going to happen.
At the height of the BLM thing, a black dude came in, saying "I want a burger, but I am NOT going to pay for it." I asked what he meant, and he kept saying he should get free food because it is racial restitution. I denied him service at all.
About a month later, I hear an altercation going on. Turns out, that racial restitution guy came in again, got sat, got served, ATE his food, and is now yelling at the server about how he is NOT going to pay for his food. The worst part was when he SPIT on the server. Police were called. He was Trespassed. The next time he came in, he got arrested.
Of course, we also cannot forgot the end of the lockdown last year. We had ridiculous numbers of customers who ranted about being required to wear masks, and how that was somehow OUR fault. If you have a problem with the masks, DON'T yell at the symptoms. Deal with the root cause of the disease. In other words, instead of being angry at the restaurant, go to the Capitol, and pound on the Governor's door. The Governor made the law, so go deal with the Governor about the law. That is how change happens.
So, are customers always right? Not even close. Most customers are orderly enough. However, most of the ones who complain are doing it to take advantage of anyone dumb enough to give in.
I learned the hard way how being a Supervisor means you spend 90% of the day being a security guard. It was not worth the pay.
I work at a truck stop right now, the amount of BS I've had to deal with. Me and our chef who isn't even supposed to be working with customers at all.
Regulars that come into the store complain about us behind our backs, I mean I had one guy get angry for not turning on the gasoline pump for him. For reference if you turn it on from inside the store, it bounces back into the store unpaid. So if somebody drives off it comes out of our paycheck.
So I'm not turning on the pump for him, he comes inside and get's angry before marching to my managers office. Since she wasn't there I smiled evilly at him and said if he had any problems he could address them WITH me.
Doesn't surprise me that he went behind my back and talked BS to my manager and coworkers. Now multiple this by three, from customer's throwing wallets, IDs and all manner of things. I don't give a crap anymore, I haven't denied anyone service but there are a few people I've gotten real freaking close to.
Nowadays I'm just waiting for someone to make my day, be an asshole and you can get gas at the next stop.
Another regular I considered my friend just walked straight out on me because he could get fuel elsewhere, that hurt so I'm not talking to him anymore.
That's not even mentioning how hard the job is like, I swear to God if I have to empty one more trashcan full of p*ss bottles.

Their should be cameras at every drive thru. That way, if there is a freeloading repeat customer, then you can read their order back to them, have them confirm said order, then there is no way that they can free load.

I worked at IBM, and had top level duties supporting a medical company (undisclosed due to NDA). I didn't get any extra pay for the extra duties, but did have the extra stress that came with it, along with being underpaid for the support provided. I decided to put in my 2 weeks notice, after I found another job (stay with me now). I went to collect on my paid time off during the 2 week period (which is required to be provided by law), they refused to give me the time off, so I asked for the pay instead (also required by law if time off is refused), which was also denied of course (illegal practice). Due to the fact I was denied both of them, I made sure to just walk out during the busiest part of my shift instead, and gave back the work laptop along with my badge, then hung out with one of the cool team leads and their primary team for a few hours and bought some Pizza for all of us. Never felt better about how I have left a job.
The moral of the story is: they really don't give a damn about you, so just leave without the 2 weeks' notice, because it really truly doesn't matter.
This video resonates so much with what I and my colleagues have been going through and saying at our last job. We would see some people do things they weren't supposed to and get off scot free, but those of us that do our work got targeted by management, because we always made comments about how they just sit in an airconditioned office the whole day, making PowerPoint Presentations. I've seen colleagues been dragged when they really didn't deserve it and when management stepped in, just double down on it and hold them hostage saying that they can't quit and that they must finish their contracts. Absolutely despicable! They don't value the fact that you're always early and submit stellar work and are just a great employee, but when you say you won't be signing another contract, they have surprised Pikachu faces like 'bUt YoU'rE sO gOoD aNd We LiKe HaViNg YoU hErE'. I always feel self conscious about confronting mistakes because ultimately so many customers lie so often about stuff that when you get someone who is being legitimately honest they get brushed off. The server can and have made mistakes too, but yeah.. the customer is definitely not always right.
Yeah I kinda feel like this video takes it too far in the other direction. Don't show up on time? Like yeah, if you got shit going on, give em a heads up you'll be a bit late and if they're a good employer they'll understand. But don't just skate and show up whenever you want, that's disrespectful to your other coworkers and your manager who has to coordinate everyone.

Oh man, I was a massage therapist for 8 years. I worked myself so hard, I got super sick. Turns out I have a connective tissue disorder and really hurt myself. Also, last massage studio i worked at, we rarely got lunch breaks. Bites in-between clients is the norm. Appreciate your massage therapists guys, please, cause its soooooooo much work.
I believe the employer's version of a 2-week notice is a Performance Improvement Plan.
I get rule #1…except in many jobs, other workers’ clock-out time depends on the next employee’s clock-in time. If you are late, you are preventing the employee from getting off on time. And if they have already worked a double, and know they have to be back in 7 hours, your selfishness prevents your coworkers from getting their sleep. And by the way, people who are chronically late will never work a double, but will happily work holidays to get the extra pay. It’s not always about your boss; it’s about your coworkers, too. If you don’t like your job, quit. But don’t make lives any more miserable for people who also have to work there. Trust me. You treat your coworkers like that, good luck getting any help at work when you need it.
Mostly agreed, but at the same time, I'm leaving at my scheduled time unless I choose to stay later for someone's benefit. About the only job I can see where you stay no matter what are jobs where someone's life depends on it, like medical services.

Not all jobs strictly ask for professional references. You can substitute character references in if they don't. In any case, the references are the last thing our workplace checks before making a final yes/no decision, and it's basically a done deal by that point unless one of the references gives a bad one. Honestly, your resume and cover letter are more important than your references.
Don't fall for the trap of making one resume and throwing it at every job you apply to. You need to read the job listing, find out what skills they're looking for, then make a point of highlighting how your prior work/life experience demonstrate that you have those skills, or that you are at least trainable in those areas. You need to write a cover letter that indicates your clear intent, that is, why you want to work with that group, and why you are right for the job. Talk about your personal/professional skills and experience, specifically those that are relevant to the job posting which basically always straight up tell you what they're looking for. How does it factor into a potential career path, even if that path takes you to another workplace in the future?
I cannot tell you how many resumes I end up passing over (that might have been perfectly good hires) because people are lazy with their cookie cutter application and make no effort to actually tailor it to our job listing. That's where you hear the horror stories of people applying to dozens, hundreds of jobs before getting any interviews. That's mostly because their resume sucked, not because the market is competitive (though that may be a factor.)
To give an example, my workplace does basic IT support for a university. We support all students/staff/faculty, mostly over the phone. We look for folks that preferably have both technical experience either through work or their personal endeavors, and some customer service experience, especially if it involves phone work. I'll get an application from someone who is a programmer/developer, with no work history in customer service. No CS already isn't ideal, but that's easily trainable depending on the candidate. However, as a programmer/developer, the tech xp is mostly irrelevant... but they COULD talk about how the programming/development process involves frequent troubleshooting to solve code errors and bugs. They could talk about how they solved their client's/colleagues problems with the app they've developed, or regularly collaborated with remote clients/developers. That turns seemingly irrelevant experience into very relevant experience. But they almost never do that. They just tell us all the cool coding projects they've done. That might be fine for a developer/programming job, but it means nothing to us, because I cannot assume that they have the skills we are looking for based off the information they've provided. Sure they could tell us about that stuff in an interview, but I've already passed them up for the resume that did a better job of indicating they possessed the skills we were looking for in the first place. I only get around to interviewing them if those other folks don't pan out and I haven't received anything better since.
Your resume is how you sell yourself on the job market, and every customer needs a different angle. It's more work, but you will get more interviews if you make that effort.
Always pick your fav coworker/work bestie who had some idea of how you were at your job and just give them as your reference. I always do that when I can tell a job is going downhill. The applications basically never say it has to be your boss/supervisor/admin anyway, just a work reference ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5:45 not really. Don't get me wrong, I get it. There is the occasional karen who does exactly as you describe. However, I have such a problem with how bad my orders come out that I've taken to ordering only simple things from menus so that way the employees (not even the cashier most of the time) won't mess it up. Example: I order the Baconator at Wendy's every time not because I want the Baconator, but because raw tomato's can kill me and no matter what I order they always seem to slap a tomato on it even when I tell them I have an allergy, except when I order the Baconator, most of the time. Another example: when I order a Mcdouble from McDonalds, why the fuck is there shredded lettuce on my Mcdouble? I didn't order it that way, yet someone is such a monumental failure at life every, almost visit to a fast food place involved me having to reorder. There was one time I had to have them refund my money because I ordered to Mcdoubles and they had to remake it 4 times because they kept putting lettuce on it. So I got my refund and stopped trying to eat at that McDonalds. It's to the point I just don't eat out anymore.
Sometimes, not always, the customer just has really shitty luck.

I got lucky with my 3rd transfer to my new job. The first thing my boss said (after having mostly stressful, petty, catty bosses) was "were mostly a laid back office, as long as you do your work then were happy" been working here since then and hoping my boss never leaves anytime soon.

I once quit during my shift (2 hours before my shift end) because of the the "sanitary manager" who kept going on and on ranting about how I would be fired if he see any drop of water around the kitchen. 😃 when I just finished wiping the kitchen, it was all nice and dry and I went to bring food to the customer (i worked as a server but they made me do dishwashing and cleaning the kitchen bc it was during the pandemic and they couldnt affort hiring another staff) one of the chefts washed their hands and splashed water all over the place. I went back to the kitchen after bringing food to the customer and the sanitary manager (he called himself that) scoled me because there were 2 drops of water on the door of the fridge. I explained that I just wiped it 2 minutes ago but he insisted that I was the one splashing water all around. I went and told the other manager (there were 4 people working there and 3 of them called themselves the manager) and told him that I will leave right now. And I left :)) there were a lot of arguements before when that guy just blamed every mistakes on me and so many other problems, not just the sanitary thing. After i left, of course they were short of staffs. The owner apologized and asked me if i could come and help for 2 days but rejected because that asshole never apologized to me

Oh, yeah, if the employers want you to do the work of two or more positions that were never discussed in your job description, reply with adjustments in pay to reflect the additional duties. Otherwise, they can pound sand. They want to overwork you, they can compensate you. And....never be the one that is great at a job or task. You *will* be stuck there. Because you are now "the one who can get it done". Been there, hated that.

Don't quit on the spot. Be such a liability to your workplace that they fire you and have to continue paying you or can be sued. Like, apply for another job and start going to the new job instead of the old one, which forces them to fire you, but you already have another line of work. This way you can give companies a severe "fuck you"

Having workers is like running a sports team, you motivate and you make sure people are fit and you get 110% work out of them, and it is the little things, polite treatment, snacks, keeping the workspace clean and in good repair, things that costs you little but is a huge morale boost.
Best is if your worker gets the cold sweat contemplating working somewhere else.
I always check the entrance for the workers in places i document, if it looks like shit then there is little hope that the company produces legit stuff, they lack the brains to make sure the things that make everything run smooth are taken care of.

I worked at an Uno's Pizzeria that eventually closed down back in late 2000's.. (Chicago suburb).
They sent in to GM's to try and clean house, start a delivery service..Told us we we were the "pioneers". 😅
and I even took 14 hours of my time to create a take-out menu, and they had me sit down with the CEO!
long story short.. GM's were rightfully fired.. skimping on all our weekly pay, and I caught wind before the storm.
Promised "$5.00 before tip" driving.. and 8 dollars and hour.. GMO's had us doing ALLLL THE WORK!!!
After the first 2 weeks, hearing "it will be next week".. fun fact, come closer, little too close, take me out for diner first.
I would eventually walk in, clock in, and walk right tf out.. because they have to at least pay for the one hour, no matter what.

Started working my first retail job ever as a sales rep for cable and internet this year. I learned that TCIW very quickly. A lot of them do lie. And lie a lot. Trying to get whatever free services they can as possible. When I first started I was empathetic to how much people had to pay for cable even though I don't use it myself. That empathy changed quickly when I realized something simple. You agreed to those services and prices and now you're shitting on my doorstep over it.

I am German and it always amazes me how easily a worker in the U.S. can be fcked over. It took some time (decades) for our Unions to get us to the level of job security but that has something to do with the Unions working for their well being of their members, not being infiltrated by the mafia and become a cash cow for them.
It used to be a lot better in the US some decades ago but corporations and conservative lawmakers have convinced a lot of people that unions are bad for the economy and just drive up prices due to increased costs. It's amazing how many people will vote directly against their own best interests.

In my industry (I work at a retailer warehouse as a cherry picker driver) People simply get worked to death and just don't show back up, or get fired for 'not being productive enough' like we're a bunch of robots. EVERYTHING in retail is like this. Retail companies do not deserve your 2 weeks notice

Not planning on giving one. No one does. Most they get is a one week notice. And their lucky when people give them that.

I planned to quit my job at Corrections right before Christmas, so I put in for a 2 week paid vacation for the last 2 weeks of December all the way as early as September. I got the vacation approved by the Warden, then at the end of my shift on the last day before I went on vacation, I handed my 2 week notice to the Lt. in charge of my shift. So my last 2 weeks of work were a paid vacation spent with family during Christmas and New Years. That’s my favorite way to quit a job.

I agree that there are a lot of people that try to milk the system and say their order got messed up when it didn't but my order has also genuinely gotten messed up many times cause fast food kitchens can get very chaotic and it is very easy for things to get missed or misunderstood. But I'm always nice about it when I ask them to fix it and honestly most of the time I don't bother. I just eat whatever they gave me instead. I've actually found some new menu items that way.
I once got the wrong order at a Logan's and was like, "Oh, sorry, we wanted the steak version of this dish, not the fish :)." And three separate individuals, including the manager came by to apologize. Repeatedly. And we were like, "It's fine. Really. We just wanted steak." I don't want to know how often they'd been screamed at to warrant that level of panic and apology for a simple mistake.
@@goldenphoenixnaruto - this. When it comes to food orders I only bring up mistakes if it makes the food inedible, and I am as calm and polite as possible when I do it. Mistakes happen, I don't doubt things can get chaotic, and I know it wasn't on purpose. There's no reason to rant and rave or demand refunds/free stuff - the people who do that are 100% angling to get something for nothing.
