- We demonstrate the Welch Allyn Ear Wash System on a patient who needs impacted ear wax irrigated from his cerumen impacted ear canals. The removal is not complete, but that is the patient's request for us to stop the washing.
Pretreatment and continuing maintenance is recommended with half-strength hydrogen peroxide or over-the-counter Debrox or Murine ear wax softener.

I loved his wink at the camera when he said he can take care of the rest with Qtips, LOL! Your patients know they can really trust you, and joke with you!
They all are a great group to work with.
Last week I had a patient (well, the doctor did I'm the student) who had wax packed behind her hearing aids. I know she could hear so much better after the doctor took it out!
I am a nurse and we used this ear irrigation apparatus but we thought it wasted too much water. The old syringe technique worked better for us. Worked in a college health service and had a lot of kids with waxy ears from ear bud use!! Retired now-yeah!!
Did you ever run alcohol through it to see if it dried any faster?
No we didn't. We would put the tubing on a towel over night but we really stopped using it after everyone tried it once. Of course we would start it near the sink to get any water out of it before we put it in the ear and would check the temp. We had a very eco-friendly campus so we just couldn't justify the water. I wish I would have videoed some of the "globs" I have removed! Love your videos!
Not only a lovely Doctor but great patients as well
He IS a great patient.
I am just seeing this now for the first time, so I am guessing that this wasn’t the best as I have never seen it again?
Oh Ralph! I like his sense of humor! Quick with the wit, that one is! I loved it when you asked him if he wanted you to get the rest of that wax out and he said he's get it at home with a qtip! LOVED IT! Thanks for the chuckles!!!!
He got me with that one.
NEWS FLASH: Ralph survived!
He didn't seem too sure before we got started.

You have the best rapport with your clients.
Ralph is pretty awesome. Reminds me a bit of my hubby in that he seems to be a man of few words...but the words he said were aptly placed for maximum humor. And as always, love your interaction with your patients. When I'm treating a patient, humor can be a great adjunct treatment tool. Thanks for sharing.
Jacee, you understand how fun medicine can be when the right approach is used.
I wonder if I had this done if it'd help my hearing improve at all in my right ear
You guys have the greatest patients😊
Yes. He was another great one.
Great channel!
Thanks, Clifford. Please enjoy our videos. You will probably catch more of the new ones if you subscribe to the channel. You might also like our medical comedy channel which is based on the comments from this channel. It is called Dr. Terry Buhl.
This irrigation device seemed far less noisy than the other one and Dr Mark appeared to be happy with it and the results it provides. The patient didn't wince when it was started up.
The patient seemed to be at ease (a tribute to Dr Mark's personality) and also had a good sense of humour and no discomfort with being on camera.
I like your videos.
You're so cute and dorky! But mostly a very caring good doctor! :)
As a grad med student, is it safe to use the device when you can't see the TM to confirm/rule out cholosteotoma/perforation? Love the simplicity of the device
There is some risk, but it is minimal in a patient with no history of sudden change, known injury, or history of diabetes.
I have always used straight peroxide. My mom used it on me and I continued with my kids
We use it diluted with an equal part of water.
Are you still using this equipment?
Medheads... I love it! I'm sorry his ears were hurting, but I wanted to get that wax out so badly. lol
+Lindsay Antwine glad you like it. I think someone else came up with that when we did the Medically Speaking Radio podcast. That was before we started the Doctor Terry Buhl channel.
No more Qtips.. lol.. I have a question.. When my doctor checks my ears, I ALWAYS get a quick body shiver... Is that normal??
+Lady J it is not unusual. I find that patients are sensitive in different parts of the body. It is not uncommon for a patient to be ticklish during the portion of the examination when I palpate their abdomen.
good job. your closed captioning mistook 'big chunk' for an expletive (5:42). regardless that was cool to see.
Can someone fix it for me? ruclips.net/user/timedtext_video?ref=share&v=Ffz-gtZm8DA
That must have been a different video. There is no dialogue at 5:42 of this video.
you are correct.it's at 5:01 sorry I wrote the wrong time...after you show the gentleman what's in the cup.
I fixed it. Thanks.
Hahaha he's so funny
Buhl can add to his candle.
Good one.
Are you still using this device?
No
Is it normal if my ear pops while I'm on treatment? and my earwax is wet from it.
+HisWife MrsLeduc get it checked
Auburn Medical Group sure will, should I call my family doctor if she prescribed it to me? or my ear doctor? sorry for a lot of questions. do u think with me having dry skin in and out my ears is a big part of my ear problems?
You can start with either, but I really can't comment without examining it.
Auburn Medical Group I understand doctor. cause I got skin in the inner ear and the outer and behind and in my cartlige too. I will definitely call and make sure things are ok
Aww he was funny! It's really just not any fun when your ears are hurting! I find it quite interesting that you guys use peroxide as a household all rounder when it comes to cuts, wounds or things of that nature. I'd never heard of it until I started watching RUclips and I thought people were using peroxide that you put in your hair!, I had to look it up. We don't use it here so it's a strange thing to me, do you know why America uses it and the U.K. Choose not to? X Claire X
I don't know it to be unique to the US. It is not recommended any more in the US for use in wounds. It is damaging to the tissue when applied to an open wound. It is useful for softening a scab during healing, especially before suture removal.
Auburn Medical Group that's interesting as Dr Gilmore uses it quite often when he's removed cysts and things so will he be damaging the tissue in the wound then?. I think I can get the peroxide here (on Amazon I've seen at least) but it's just not something that's a household item like it is in America. X Claire X
Hi Claire! We use peroxide for various uses in Canada also. I always have it in my medicine cabinet and first aid kit. I hope you are having a good day!!
Take your hose outside, swing it swiftly around so that you have an high and low orbit within the same orbit. The force will get all the water out and you won't risk the hose either. Just don't let it hit the ground.
I think the hose is 12 to 16 feet in length.
I guess it could be cut, but I wouldn't want the hose length any shorter. It is just right for our current exam room set-up.
Ralph is such a cutie.
Aww- no cold water calorics? ;)
I guess you have to run the thing in reverse to do calorics.
well geez, ears are so complicated!!! i scratched my ear with my nail..(outer ear) the other day..
They get in the way by sticking out.
yea. mine are not are bug as my dads ears..
Regina Sclafford
Ralph was fun 🙂. If you put a q-tip far enough in your ear you'll vomit.
That can happen if the correct part of the canal is stimulated. Thankfully I've only it the part that causes a cough.
BooBoo Kitty wow that's interesting I didn't know that! I better make sure I don't met my kids learn that one as they grow up because you just know they'll try using it as sick days off school lol X Claire X
Why do people tend to use Qtips instead of a Jobson Horn for their ears? I use that but it's mainly for scratching my ear because I have dry cerumen and I swear it makes my ears itch
+Tired N Snarky I tend to think that when it comes to sticking an object in an orifice of one's body there is a preference for something which is disposable.
