  • Dr. Gawayne helps Diane, a patient recently recovered from Bell's Palsy, by cleaning out her ears. He uses curettage on the left ear, and both curettage and irrigation on the right ear. There is unusual pain with parts of the cleaning in the right ear because of her recent Bell's Palsy. Bell's Palsy is thought to be a swelling of the facial nerve which results in weakness or paralysis of the muscles of the right side of the face. It includes the muscles of the upper face, because it affects the nerve AFTER branches from both sides of the brain join on their way to innervate the face. Typically a stroke will only cause weakness or paralysis of the lower face, sparing the muscles that control movement of the eyebrows. Thank you to our patrons on Patreon at the $5 level and higher:

    I had Bells Palsy on the right side of my face when I was 13, which resolved within a couple of months with only a residual lag. I developed it on the left side about 14 months ago, at 47, and it hasn't resolved at all. There was no pain the first time, but when it started this time, the pain around my ear and jaw was excruciating! It's so odd how differently it can affect you.

    So Bell's Palsy can ONLY affect the right side of the face per the video? So what is it called if there is the same kind of nerve paralysis on the left side of the face?

    • @auburnmedicalgroup
      @auburnmedicalgroup  6 лет назад +7

      +Pamela Schramke it only affects one side PER EPISODE.

      Auburn Medical Group Thanks! I thought in the video he said it ONLY affects the right side of the face and then I was confused. Thanks for the clarification!

    • @taraoakes6674
      @taraoakes6674 6 лет назад

      Bell’s Palsy can affect different parts of the face depending on what nerve is being pinched. Mine was on the right side, and after years I still have some drooping on that side...it all depends on how much the nerve was pinched and damaged. Having the paralysis on just one side is the most common. The best treatment is anti-inflammatories and lysine to help the nerve recover.

    Its amazing that India and other countries use a camera inside the ear and instruments to clasp and remove the cerumen. But in the good ole USA with the costliest healthcare in the world we are using a squirt bottle and a bowl.

    • @McSuperfly101
      @McSuperfly101 6 лет назад +36

      It probably has more to do with the fact that people America and other western countries tend to have soft wax which can be easily removed via irrigation whereas in places like India or China they have very dry wax that often requires tweezers to be removed.

    • @chrissypoo2711
      @chrissypoo2711 6 лет назад +15

      pal98111 I agree with. McSuperfly101. In addition, here in America we tend to be more aggressive about bathing and cleanliness of our parts than in other parts of the world. Many scholars from the world say that Americans bathe too, wash hair too often etc. It’s cultures.

    • @matthewwhitt6060
      @matthewwhitt6060 6 лет назад +5

      pal98111 only the rich in India have that ability. Cameras are only really used for viewing by an audience. There’s really no need for the ear canal.

    Did you seriously just use a water pik to clean her ear??? I'd think the pressure would be on the high side for an eardrum, but I'm no doctor either - just going on how it feels when flossing with it.

    • @hissibling933
      @hissibling933 6 лет назад +2

      just asked Dr. Mark the same question the other day. It is a Water Pik but it has a special attachment that is folr cleaning ears. It probably comes from a medical supply house. I would venture to say that the particular Water Pik that is used for cleaning ears at Auburn Medical is only used for that purpose.

    • @auburnmedicalgroup
      @auburnmedicalgroup  6 лет назад +2

      +His Sibling that is correct. The attachment and the tip are both modified for use in cleaning ears with studies proving both efficacy and safety, even in children.
