Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band.
This is so true, that's a great "quote" my friend. 👍
@@YoCraps-og4kt so true.
And your studio sound engineer's favorite band as well!
They do not have one boring tune in the entire bunch. Tight, tight, tight. Their craftsmanship is divine, and the lyrics always have something big to say.
My favourite "band" of all time, hands down.
@@crowredeye8066 Agreed - "boring" was the only word they never quite understood!
Steely Dan lyrics often require a knowledge of subculture, literature, history, politics, or religion. They are always clever and interesting. They may drop references to things only the shadowy bohemian night crawler knows, or a reference to a business, a drink, or something one-off that you have to decode. Lots of thought and not a little education is a must.
The lower a listener's IQ, the less likely they'll dig the Dan.
Steely Dan ...is a reference to William S. Burroughs' 1959 novel Naked Lunch, a book I'll admit to reading but not actually understanding. In Naked Lunch, "Steely Dan III from Yokohama" is a steam-powered dildo, which is not really something that comes to mind when listening to "Reelin' In The Years."Jun 24, 2014
low rider definitely an interesting history lol I appreciate the band info! 🙏🏾
@@abovetheinfluence9361 your welcome. I had a good laugh on it too. Only recently found out myself lol.
low rider gave me a good chuckle too! 😂
Thanks..I'd heard 40 years ago that it was the name of a dildo from Behind the Green Door...Naked Lunch, huh? That's cool.
How did they use it?
You should check out EVERY cut on Steely Dan's "Aja" album... You will NOT be disappointed.
Right there is not a did on any of any of they're albums aja is a masterpiece
#Facts 🤷🏿♀️
The Electric Sitar Super Solo, never gets old even after 45 years
The Sugar Honey Iced Tea!!!
Every time I hear this it takes me back to a moment in time. The early 70's when I was young teenager. It's amazing how songs can do that.
'Deacon Blues' is about as close to a Steely Dan anthem, at least among actual fans, as there is.
Deservedly so.
You are going to find when you listen to Steely Dan that's so many people have stolen their riffs and redone their music...
They are the true originals..
it was mentioned that they are a band's band what that means is after great musicians finish playing themselves and wanted to kick back and party or just relax they put Steely Dan on.
True talent.
I agree; sometimes I’m a little frustrated when I hear ‘sampled.’ I have to side with you when you say their riffs have been stolen.
I was a teen when i first heard this song and I've been a Steely Dan fan ever since. I'm 64 now. How time fly's !!!
Steely Dan is eclectic perfection. LOVE their entire catalog. Hope you'll check out more. Green Earrings is 🔥🔥🔥
Lara definitely more Steely Dan reactions coming REAL soon! 😊 Thank you so much for watching! 🙌🏾
You just can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
That's my girl!!!
You'll hear musicians say they love Steely Dan. My brother in-laws are guitarists and have seen them twice. Duo who wrote incredible music with a variety of sounds! One just passed away. 💞
Lesmax2 your brothers in law definitely have great taste in music! So sorry for your loss by the way. 🙏🏾❤️
Steely Dan is a smooth, funky rock band, you can not go wrong listening to their jams. Check out the following songs by this iconic group: Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Josie, Hey Nineteen and FM (No Static At All), please give us your reaction. Thanks.
Peter Hudgens they definitely are smooth and funky for sure! I got “Black Cow” lined up next! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Thanks for the recommendation and watching!
"Deacon Blues" & "Hey Nineteen" Should be next!
Steely Dan is a treasure trove of phenomenal music.
This is off their debut album. Each album gets sonicaly more perfect. One of their later albums AJA' is perfection. There are dozens of gems.
Aja is not "sonically perfect". It has that treble distortion that was common in the mid 1970s. Perhaps the Gaucho LP, which sounded better despite many recordings on it being just one year younger. You can hear that "Thirld world man" were from the Aja sessions though, on the sheer sound quality. (But I see you are probably talking about musically or compositionally "perfect" in some sense.)
The album Gaucho is great too
The guitar solo is an electric sitar, with Denny Dias at the helm. He was the only one aside from Becker and Fagen who stayed with them through the 70’s
They joined Denny's band, so they stayed with him. 🙂
They are so amazing musicians. Another great sound from the 70s!
We didn't know how great we had it musically. But wow. So much greatness. Steely Dan is one of hundreds of truly great musicians.
My dad used to chill in his office getting drunk while listening to Steely Dan... Now I'm getting drunk in my living room getting drunk while listening to Steely Dan..
We come full circle homeboy
SD is a deep well. Dive in. My suggestion for your next song is “Green Earrings.” Kind of a deep cut, but I like it. It’s hard to go wrong with ANY song from any of their 70’s albums. Honestly.
Mark Drechsler I got swimming gear ready for the dive! Lol Adding “Green Earrings” to the list! Thanks for the recommendation! 🙌🏾😊
Steely Dan, Truly Iconic Groovy Music of the 70's.... "Do It Again", "Black Cow" "Reeling In The Years", "FM", "Don't Take Me Alive". "Deacon Blues". "Kid Charlemegne".... the groove continues...
I love Steely Dan. Such a different sound that came out mid 70s. King Of The World is my fav song but, honestly, I love all of them.
You must hear Dr. Wu...from Katy Lied, it's kinda the title song..awesome sax and perfect sound engineering . The Dan morph constantly, a lotta different band members, Donald Fagen keyboards and Walter Becker guitar are the core...
Steely Dan refers to a single woman's best friend. There are only two permanent Steely Dan members, Walter Becker (RIP) and Donald Fagan. All other musicians on their records are studio musicians. This allowed Walter and Donald to chose the very best musicians for each song, and each instrument and vocal. When they wanted a particular sound for one song, they chose just the musician who could produce the sound they were looking for. This is why you are hearing the very best drummers, guitar players, sax players for each and every song. If I were you, I would do it the way I did it, the way most of us did it, start with the first album and listen. This will give you many years on pleasure as you move up their discography. Fagan's solo album, Night Fly, is also top notch.
I don't think William Burroughs was interested in using Steely Dan on women.
You should definitely add Kid Charlemagne to this brilliant list of yours 😉🤘🏻more epic guitar licks (Larry Carlton) I know you’ll appreciate 😄
Down the Steely Dan rabbit hole.
Man! They have no bad songs, dude!
Incredible production. You can hear a drumstick hitting a precise point on a ride cymbal. Clear as a bell on a cold morning
Love your vibe man - I'm hearing this 3 years after the fact . . . .hope you are well. thanks for this
Steely dan is the name of a vibrator. Still a great band and definitely worth a listen. I gots to say love the dreads love the face and love the voice. You really got me now- cars
You have just started off down the rabbit hole with these guys...and it's a deep hole you don't mind being in!...One of a kind trip, man..."Josie"..."Peg"..."Aja"..."Kid Charlemagne"..."Deacon Blues"..etc., etc...Essentially made up of 2 guys who meticulously hired session players (and others) that would fit particular tracks..Very demanding on what they wanted, and usually got it...Studio geniuses...Have fun!
Not a Fender Rhodes. It's a Hohner Pianet with the vibrato switch thrown. I used one on the road for a number of years (with a broken vibrato). And the keyboard solo in the middle uses what, I believe, they refer to on the album jacket as a "plastic organ." The nearest I can figure is that they mean a kids' organ with a fan that blows through a set of reeds & plays like a keyboard. Glad you like the song. I think it might have been their first radio hit.
Just watched both your Steely dan vids. Nice to see someone actually pick out all the instumentation and talk a little production. Good vibes all round. peace from scotland
I went to a Steely Dan concert in the ‘90s & it was a blast. 💖✌️It’s great that you talk without stopping video
Another song Steely Dan did early in their career is called Ricki, Don't Lose That Number. They had many hits in the 70's and early 80's then faded out. Great music. Try their song from the FM Movie soundtrack called FM.
John Andrews did most of their hits come in the 70s? And im adding both songs to playlist! Thanks for watching my friend! 🙏🏾
@@abovetheinfluence9361 In 1999 they made a reunion album and released the single 'Cousin Dupree' that you may have heard. You've probably heard a lot of their '70s hits: Peg, Hey Nineteen, Babylon Sisters, FM, Deacon Blues, Rikki Don't Lose That Number.
'Rikki'.
The Fez and Home at Last will make them your favorite band ever. They are probably your favorite group's favorite group.
Love Steely Dan. Reeling in the Years , Hey Nineteen , Peg , start with those.
Another real funky band is Three Dog Night. You'll really like them. Check out " Joy to the world " and Shambala.
Enjoying watching you react to music I grew up to.
Stay Safe.
Cheers from Canada.
About the name Steely Dan:
Although Steely Dan's music was rooted in jazz and blues, the band's name came from a literary source--Edgar Burroughs' novel "Naked Lunch," which made mention of a "steely dan," a steam-powered adult toy. (Todd Whitesel)
Yes that's it, but it was William S. Burroughs, not Edgar, the Tarzan man
Welcome to the world and the rabbit hole that is Steely Dan, Kings Of The Groove. They are traditionally your favorite bands favorite band. My favorites by them are "Black Cow", "Kid Charlemagne", "Aja", "Deacon Blue", the entire "Aja" album, "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", "Reelin' In The Years", "Babylon Sisters", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Don't Take Me Alive", "My Old School", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Green Earrings", "The Fez", and "Doctor WU. There are plenty more because there's really no such thing as a bad Steely Dan song. Try "Peg" or "Black Cow" next and go from there. However, SD should be watched with a lyric video (Steely Ben is good for those)...and headphones are always required.
You should listen to everything they did. It is worth your time. These sessions used some of the best musicians in LA at the time and Donald Fagen and Walter Becker obsessed every single detail. Every thing they did had hard grooves, quirky cynical lyrics, and surprises all over. They have been sampled a lot. Start with the album Aja. Be safe.
Steely Dan is a great band indeed. And I have a great recommendation for you. If you enjoy watching talented musicians play live, it would be awesome to see you react to the 1973 live performance video of "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group. In terms of the sheer fun of watching them perform, they are one of the most entertaining and musically talented groups out there. I think you would get a big kick out of it. Stay safe and keep creating the great content!
The name STEELY DAN came from the movie Barbarella. The 1969 movie That debuted Raquel Welsh. Steely Dan was a character in the movie
Love Steely Dan's song "Peg" ! A classic!
Steely Dan is a masterclass in everything
King of the World and Any Major Dude are both faves of mine
Greetings Jay,from a brutha from downunder, the steely music 🎶 is as you said signature music because their sound is made with very versatile musicians, who know their instrument and it's unique qualities, a sound once heard will stay in the brain, regards to all ,Malcolm Lorna, Australia 🇦🇺

Doesn't look like you left anything out, Michael, lol, but I agree, their whole catalog is fantastic!!
@@hillaryc1874 I left out "Here at the Western World" which I didn't discover until recently. That's another good one.
lolol
So glad your diving in to STEELY DAN😃
Don't Take Me Alive, Aja, Deacon Blues, Black Cow, Kid Charmelegne, FM, Peg, Riki Don't Lose That Number, Babylon Sister, Reelin In The Years....Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker are Steely Dan!
Some deep Steely Dan cuts (as opposed to the many hits listed here that are reviewed a million other places) you should consider checking out: Babylon Sisters, Haitian Divorce, Home At Last, Caves of Altamira, Jack Of Speed, The H-Gang, Teahouse On The Tracks. All are epic, funky, and with the best/most interesting musicianship on the planet.
One of the very few bands that really don't have a weakness. Not a bad Steely Dan song, just a few that really stand out as you will see as you deep dive into the groove masters!
This is early in their career when they were a band.Later the two main guys Donald Fagen and Walter Becker kept putting out great albums under the name Steely Dan while using top studio aces to complete the songs.Aja is the album where the production is top shelf.Any song from that is good “Peg” “Deacon Blues” pick any track
Enjoying your reactions!!
You ight dude.👍You're listening to the lyrics, but still feeling and jamming to the music. That's a rare thing in here. (I'll never understand how someone's body remains still while good music is playing😃)
Only problem with this song...I can never get it LOUD enough, LOL. A classic!!
One of the members is also a member of the Doobie Bros.. He also has a solo career. Michael McDonald..yep that was awesome to know.. We had some if the greatest music back in the 70's and 80's...
Love to watch video music reactions and came across your video for one of my favorite groups way back when...ok, in my day, lol. Anyway this song does no justice as to who and what Steely Dan can do. Give yourself a sensation, listen to album ( I’m really dating myself here) Aja. Any song will do because the are all brilliant . Many studio musicians on this album like Wayne Shorter, Joe sample, Steve Gadd, Larry Carlton. How about that for some name dropping. Enjoy...Namaste 🙏🏼
Dr. Wu, Aja, Deacon Blues, Gold Teeth II
Steely Dan used some of the best studio musicians there were at the time, and it shows up in their recordings.
Kid Charlemagne, Reelin' in the Years, Dirty Work - all great Steely Dan tracks to check out.
this is really really worth checking out : Bat Chain Puller - by Captain Beefheart - from the album Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) (1978)
.. it's a purely individual style - at times plays with rhythm, words, tones .. a welcome change from standard electric band products
Love this song so much
You started at exactly the right place - the first song on the first album ...
That's a Wurlitzer electric piano, though, not a Rhodes ...
John Nichols I was going to say "not a Rhodes." That and the Wurlitzer have distinctively different sounds.
Don't take me,alive. And kid Charlemagne. guitar excellence
At the end of that docu, they film a final take on a complex section of a song. It took a very long time to get these things together, very complex, and the concentration of all these musicians, reading charts, with all these little nuances, all have to be there perfect, and still sound natural and like it was just improvised. And they get it, right down to this final little keyboard tag at the end -- and the look on these guy's faces -- very cool -- very cool - master musicians getting it right
Great song!! You have a lot of excellent songs by them to react to...Aja, Rikki don`t loose that number, Deacon blues, Black cow, etc
In a famous novel by heroin addict William Borroughs, "Naked Lunch", which is a hallucinogenic narrative, there is a Dildo by that name, Steely Dan - thus the name. I think they must have been really stoned when they decided on that. This was a unique band because it was only two guys who wrote the songs, did the arrangements, and they brought in the best musicians in the country to play, and in their great album Aja, they would bring dudes in to play until they got the sound they wanted: and they were getting sax players from Miles Davis' original band to play on that record; they had drummers who had played with every body who was anybody. If you are into recording, you have to see this docu on the recording of Aja, with all kinds of footage about the actual musicians there contributing licks, and their experiences. But two brilliant dudes, really, to write all these songs, and the arrangements, most of the solos, etc. But the musicians they played with - a million dollar band man. Could never afford to employ them on the road. Check this out - a lesson in recording. It wasn't just one song, but their entire method and approach and they were able to attract these great musicians to play with them. ruclips.net/video/8sdMV9TzMkc/видео.html
You should do "Josie" from Aja, or let's just say, All of Can't Buy A Thrill, and AJA, and The Royal Scam, for starters
Ha! You were talking over one of the coolest electric sitar solos ever!
Great reaction vids. So many Steely Dan songs to go! Aja album, The Royal Scam album, Gaucho album, Donald Fagen’s Nightfly album, is a good start.
AAAAAAHHHH! Damn I was trying to remember the name of this song so I could suggest it...excellent song.
God I love fagan.
Great reaction...! Hey Nineteen & Josie, plz... =)
Welcome to the rabbit hole...even if you don’t do more reActions, keep listening.
Whenever someone asks where the name Steely Dan comes from, then you know that they already know the answer
I DJ’d in a club here in the 80’s. I would put Billy Jean (M.J. album cut) on the turntable, mix it with the 12” instrumental of the same song so I could lay this song under it with Billy Jeans beat/rhythm. Didn’t hardly have to change speed, songs are very similar!
Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. They audition different studio musicians for each song. They are mad scientists of music
Gotta love The Dan.
Totally agree with the Marvin ref. Y’gotta realize that this was created during Gaye’s heyday... the influences were free-flowing back in the 60’ and 70’s.
Il ove this channel! And I Love steely dan
Deacon Blues is my favorite Steely Dan song
Back in the day when I was singing in a band, sometimes what we would do with the vocals is due to tracks of the same vocals. It was a pretty cool effect. And it's kind of fun to sing along with yourself. LOL
Steely Dan were two guys, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They were perfectionists. They were famous for hiring and firing musicians, sometimes daily to get the sounds they wanted. Til they got it right
You have good observations, like the double lead. That happened when a producer overlaid two different takes on the lead vocals. Might have been accidental, I don’t recall. But it’s very effective.
Back in the day they were sometimes referred to as jazz pop.
Funny you ask about their name! You’ll reach a loss of innocence when you find out! Anyway thanks for playing it. Tons of stuff from them you will enjoy .
I hit the subscribe button because you're going down the Steely Dan rabbit hole. ;-)
Can't Buy A Thrill is probably Steely Dan's most primitive offering as an album and it is still more sophisticated than any other pop offering at the time.
so many great steely dan songs. Dr;.Wu, Aja, Black Cow, Your Gold Teeth II, Caves of Altamira, Babylon Sisters, Peg, Haitian Divorce.. Pick one any one.
Damn when I grew up listening to music EVERYBODY played an Intrument
Steely Dan is like the composite character name of this group
"Steely Dan" was Walter Becker & Donald Fagen, but after they stopped touring & focused on studio recording they had many GREAT musicians to help them on their albums. The term "steely dan" will warrant a Google search, as I'd rather not repeat it in mixed company.
Like your style. Clean, clear, great instincts, no fluff, positive.
Steely Dan are in a class by themselves. Please check out Babylon Sisters and Home at last. The shuffle king Bernard Purdie on drums. Stunning.
Love this
Black Friday is a banger
Listen to the WHOLE album The Royal Scam-
Night by Night
Love the reaction.
Since you seem to dig a little led zeppelin I cannot recommend strongly enough the songs "WHEN THE LEVEE BREAK" and "HEY. HEY, WHAT CAN I DO". some incredible music by an INCREDIBLE band. Peace to you and yours. ~Dave
A popular "adult toy" at the time was called Steely Dan. I read that's where there got the name.
Led Zeppelin 'Gallows Pole'
I freakin love the music that was out when I was a kid.
Trying to come up with some phenomenal suggestions.
💜
Had it turned up all the way and still couldn't hear it ... Anyone else have the same problem? You're gonna love the Steely Dan rabbit hole ... Have fun! If you haven't already, check out ANYTHING Bob Seger ... Night Moves ... Turn the Page ... Against the Wind ... You'll Accompany Me ... Like a Rock ... You won't be disappointed ...
I love the Dan!
