The Eagles admitted their favorite band was SD, and when SD lyrics mentioned "...turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" on Royal Scam's "Everything you did", the next year the Eagles released mega-hit Hotel California which mentions "...they stab it with their STEELY knives..."
IMO, the album Royal Scam is as good as Aja. They are different. But with songs like Kid Char, Green Earrings, Haitian Divorce and The Caves... Wow. All are great.

The instrument you refer to at 2:09 is called the guiro, a hand-held wooden block or cylinder with ridges carved into it, so you can drag a stick over to make a rhythmic pulse. Very popular in latin and Afro Cuban music. And if you really want to hear Steely Dan at their best (especially the bass and drums) listen to their songs "Josie" and "Peg".

The song is about vices such as doing drugs where the subject of the song continues to return to the same dark world again and again, over and over. Try another Steely Dan song named "Black Cow." What's astonishing about this song is that it basically introduced Steely Dan. This was their first "hit". This musically, lyrically complex song, with an impossibly elaborate percussion arrangement, and a preposterous electric sitar solo, followed by a ridiculous keyboard solo, with an Old West motif, played with Caribbean rhythms, was essentially their DEBUT!

It thrills me to no end to see young people checking out this old music!!, old for us oldsters, new for you young people. We were young or younger when we heard it, and were also impressed and hooked , and reeled in!, do pay attention to the lyrics, this one is a reference to Vegas, and this song is from the 1970's, so that part, "you find yourself in Vegas with a "Handle" in your hand", is what they use to call "one armed bandit ", they still call'em slot machines, but back in the day in order to play one you had to pull the lever down, of course after you deposited some coins, which you don't have to do anymore, everything is paper.
They're still bandits, cause they still rob your wallet, unless you hit.,lol. And the name yeah, I know, ohh by the by, its a naughty name, huh,.look it up, don't know they chose that name I swear, everybody wants to be unique, different, I still haven't figured out why the Psychedelic Furs chose that,(yeah thats the name,.no lie), good music though. 😁, keep going, enjoy, Godspeed, Peace ✌

ALSO look up the bands name STEELY DAN and what It means...😜🤣😂🤣 ! Their lyrics are very descriptive and evocative. AND YES Sade ! But she took her page out of Steely Dans book. So MANY fabulous songs and albums ....boy are you in for a treat. I remember being in 8th grade when the songs Deacon Blues and FM came out. I couldn’t get enough. The Gaucho and Aja albums are a MUST . Gaucho in particular non stop perfection. You need to listen to Black Cow, Bad Sneakers, (Dirty Work, and Reelin in the Years both from the same album as Do it Again) Don’t take Me Alive, Dr Wu, I.G.Y., I Got the News, Aja, Pretzel Logic off the album with the same title . My Old School, Kid Charlemagne (this song in particular is all about drugs. But so are many of their other songs. Get the lyrics and read them). Their lyrics are so well written. I wish I could write like Donald and Walter ...there are no real definitive answers out there about who wrote which lyrics. They are both geniuses ! Enjoy 😉

You're right, it is a sitar! They used the best session musicians.

Denny Dias played the electric sitar. Becker and Fagen joined HIS band. So he is not a hired session musician on this album.

I bought Aja upon it's release and it stayed on my turntable forever! And one of the few albums I still listen to in it's entirety.

The music for testing your headphones and speakers! Steely Dan is one of top 10 groups of last 50 years, and studio musicians made most of the sounds that Fagen and Becker arranged. . They knew what the end result should be and kept experimenting until they got it. I like your channel. Request FM for your next review.

That percussion instrument... You might be thinking of a Güiro. A hollow gourd you scrape with a stick. I think it's a cabasa, with the metal beads you twist in your hand.
