There are no bad Steely Dan songs.
#Facts 🤷🏾♀️
100% True. The quality of their recordings and the level of musicianship is outstanding.
The only bad one was when Smash Mouth covered this song!
Amen to that. Each Steely Dan track is a gem...explore them all man, you're sure to discover at least 8 or 9 new favorite songs!
yeah...I noticed that too...never heard a bad Steely Dan Song
This is a deep and outstanding rabbit hole to explore....Steely Dan is class and funk....brilliant stuff.
One of my fav Steely Dan tunes 👍
It’s perfection and grace
Once you hear Steely Dan, you will DO IT AGAIN....Reelin in the years, Peg, Hey 19....rabbit hole. This song is about the vices: violence, sex and gambling and how they reel you in to do it again...
Reelin in the years is my favorite.
Good ear. Its an electric sitar and that's Denny Dias playing. The musicianship of this group is always top notch.
agreed and also their production is exceptional, sound quality and mixing sounds 20 years ahead of it's time
Victor Feldman on percussion. There wasn't much he couldn't do.
@@craigedwards2940 Really? That's fascinating! I have a record by Victor Feldman, but I had no idea he played on Steely Dan records.
Yup, a guitar with buzzy sitar strings, also featured on Stevie Wonder's Signed Sealed Delivered.
Man, doesn't he tear that up? Thanks for the friendly, thoughtful reaction.
Looks like the Steely Dan rabbit hole has caught another victim. Not a single bad song in their catalog.
Definitely a band’s band. Jimmy Page has stated that his all-time favorite guitar solo is from Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years.”
High praise from an icon.
The Eagles admitted their favorite band was SD, and when SD lyrics mentioned "...turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" on Royal Scam's "Everything you did", the next year the Eagles released mega-hit Hotel California which mentions "...they stab it with their STEELY knives..."
IMO, the album Royal Scam is as good as Aja. They are different. But with songs like Kid Char, Green Earrings, Haitian Divorce and The Caves... Wow. All are great.
Ken Kitchen I didn’t know any of that. Thank you!
The instrument you refer to at 2:09 is called the guiro, a hand-held wooden block or cylinder with ridges carved into it, so you can drag a stick over to make a rhythmic pulse. Very popular in latin and Afro Cuban music. And if you really want to hear Steely Dan at their best (especially the bass and drums) listen to their songs "Josie" and "Peg".
My dad went to Mexico and came back with a guiro. It was shaped like a fish.
I have heard it referred to as a"fish."
My grandfathers is shaped like a fish, and it still sounds good. :)
The gourd wrapped in shells, or steel marble chains is a cabassa. Thin both guiro and cabassa, maracas. Basically all the toys 😺🐙🏴
All the years I've been jamming to this song I never noticed the similarity to Smooth Operator before you pointed it out!.....very intuitive!!
Same here, hehe.
Damn! That was the first thing I noticed
Michael Jackson's' Billie Jean has samples of this song.. There is a remix with both songs out there to compare.
@@joepereira1205 I think you're wrong....there might be a remix that sounds like Billie Jean, but I heard Darryl Hall once say that
MJ told him he got the groove for Billie Jean from "I Can't Go For That"....but there were no actual samples in the song
@@George-gk5bu I'm aware of that.....I wasn't insinuating they ripped it off....(nor do I think Sade ripped it off)
I like your reaction - you understand the music and your appreciation for the music shows!
These guys are notorious studio perfectionists. You’ll not find many better.
Two of the most unique bands of the 70's were Steely Dan and Supertramp they both had dozens of hits stretching into the 80's
The song is about vices such as doing drugs where the subject of the song continues to return to the same dark world again and again, over and over. Try another Steely Dan song named "Black Cow." It was a hip hop sample, which you've likely heard before. It is the epitome of smooth! It's just plain smooth and an intoxicating song. Trust me.
That solo was an electric Sitar
A great reaction for a great band! Some of my favourites are, "Kid Charlemagne", "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", "Rikki Don't Loose That Number", and "Reelin' In The Years".
Reeling & Rikki some old school SD. 😊But PEG is my Jam! Kid & Hey 19 I love to sing the backup vocals to! 🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Deacon blues also
Welcome to the rabbit hole that will become your Steely Dan addiction......
Gotta love that smooth 70's vibe and jazz fusion background. Intricate layers of sound
Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Kid Charlemagne, Black Cow
yeh man Rikki dont lose that number is a great tune
Kanye, De La Soul, Ice Cube, Lord Tariq to name a few. Man soo many hip hop and rap songs have Steely Dan samples. Truth! React to Black Cow please!
He's gonna freak out as he recognizes sample after sample after sample.... 🤣😂🤣 Steely Dan! ☺ I'm here for it! 😉🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Yeah. Black cow = Uptown, Baby.
Try also, Don’t Take Me Alive, Reelin’ In the Years, Peg, Boddhisattva, FM.
All Yacht Bangers. Lol
Sampling...the lazy man's way to "create" a song. Pathetic.
You could do Steely Dan reactions for three weeks straight and never find a bad song. They were the ultimate 70's band, and every single recording was a slice of perfection. Too bad they couldn't transition to MTV (that is, too bad for MTV).
What's astonishing about this song is that it basically introduced Steely Dan. This was their first "hit". This musically, lyrically complex song, with an impossibly elaborate percussion arrangement, and a preposterous electric sitar solo, followed by a ridiculous keyboard solo, with an Old West motif, played with Caribbean rhythms, was essentially their DEBUT!
Jesus Christ!
Kid Charlamagne, My Old School, Josie, Reeling In the years, Don't Take Me Alive, FM,..................So many good songs. Check out Steely Dan Wikipedia. 2 Music Geniuses who employed countless studio musicians to get the sound they wanted.
I like the way you take it all in--the rhythm section, the percussion details, the solos... good ear to know that was an electric sitar. They have so many good songs--I envy you getting to hear them for the first time!
from that same album check out "Reelin' in the years" and "Dirty Work"
Anything from their album AJA !
There's plenty of Steely Dan you'll enjoy.
Consider that this track was recorded over 47 years ago. Still sounds fresh and relevant. You will find that many beats from this group have been sampled over the years. Try Black Cow, Kid Charlemagne, Bodhisattva. Very diverse group - always top talent used.
Cabasa. The shaky sound is the Cabasa.
I like your reviews and commentary Bro. shout out from Philly
It thrills me to no end to see young people checking out this old music!!, old for us oldsters, new for you young people. We were young or younger when we heard it, and were also impressed and hooked , and reeled in!, do pay attention to the lyrics, this one is a reference to Vegas, and this song is from the 1970's, so that part, "you find yourself in Vegas with a "Handle" in your hand", is what they use to call "one armed bandit ", they still call'em slot machines, but back in the day in order to play one you had to pull the lever down, of course after you deposited some coins, which you don't have to do anymore, everything is paper.
They're still bandits, cause they still rob your wallet, unless you hit.,lol. And the name yeah, I know, ohh by the by, its a naughty name, huh,.look it up, don't know they chose that name I swear, everybody wants to be unique, different, I still haven't figured out why the Psychedelic Furs chose that,(yeah thats the name,.no lie), good music though. 😁, keep going, enjoy, Godspeed, Peace ✌
Subbed to this young brotha.. you seem to know instruments.lotta folks don't know anything about instruments.not a bad thing.just helps enjoying different music. xox Be Blessed ,Be Safe Out There
Welcome to the Steelhead family!
"Peg", "My Old School", "Deacon Blues"............... Sooooooooooooooo good.
You have no idea where this all goes LOL, you will love it
FM, Babylon Sisters, Dirty Work, My Old School, just as a start...
Best Steely Dan Tune Ever!
Don't Take Me Alive!!!
Your unashamed ability to just hear the music for what it is earned my subscribe. Keep it up Cool Breeze.
Anyone that reviews and likes Steely Dan is a person whose channel I SUBSCRIBE to. Thank you.
me too.
100 % skip all recommendations and listen to their song “green earrings” iim telling your mind can not handle it. Too good its insane that they could write a sing that clean. Every song they made was 100% but just trust me
That's my favorite SD song and I have been a fan for over 40 years. Green Earrings is always in heavy rotation on my playlist.
Steely Dan, so many great songs! The music from the 70’s is varied and all good
There is no nothing better than rock´n roll
This Band is dope. One of the most hip hop sampled bands. Probably top 5, if not number 1.
Yes, the production values on ALL their songs were definitely A#1!!! They were studio aces! The other major Steely Dan songs to get with are:
Reelin' in the Years; and
Rikki Don't Lose That Number
Marimba and oh yeah, that sitar (created in India) solo! This is an electric.
I absolutely love Steely Dan, as you dig deeper you might recognize some songs because popular rap music frequently samples them. I recommend Kid Charlemagne, Peg, Reelin' In The Years, Hey Nineteen, Dirty Work, Black Cow.
I know...I know...Steely Dan are Dope!!! When I first heard them on the radio in the70's the groove the beat....the instruments....that guitar playing...mmmmmm....Excellent...and that instrument is called "The Fish."
Steely Dan are the greatest jazz/rock band who ever played music. So many absolute classic tracks, it's almost impossible to recommend any in particular, but here are a few...'Peg'...'King Charlemagne' ...'Aja'...'Deacon Blues'...'Show-Business Kids'...'My Old School'...'Reelin' In The Years'...'Ricky Don't Lose That Number'...'Fez'.
God bless Walter Becker, so sadly missed.
6:10 -Wow, not too many people these days knows what a theremin is... Actually that sound is a Yamaha YC-30 organ. It was a cheap solid state organ from the early seventies that had something called a portamento ribbon on it. You would slide back and forth on it and it would give that warbley sound. It was not a very popular organ and I think this the only hit record that ever had one on it... ruclips.net/video/75UP-geklns/видео.html
I thought Donny Osmond played it on "Crazy Horses" to get the whinnying sound... 🤣😂
@@kathynicholson103 Wow !!! Never saw that one:
ruclips.net/video/yiNnDpIW918/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
@@frankmarsh1159 Maybe not a "hit", but I jammed to it as a child. Maybe I was just excited to see Donny looking a little wild!
👍
Agree. And the electric piano is a Wurlitzer-which was popular then- but sounds different from the Fender Rhodes. (I have 2 Rhoads and would like to find a Wurly.)
You just can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
I was the very first person on my block to buy this album when it first came out.
Jamel_aka_jamal and Tre Narcisse have gone down this rabbit hole. Neither has yet to hit a bad song. Several have had significant samples. Kanye sampled them.
Awesome, always loved Steele Dan, Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Another classic rock song
Black Cow, FM, Aja, Babylon Sister, Kid Charlemagne, Deacon Blues, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Pretzel Logic and Don't Take Me Alive are Steely Dan favorites of mine. Thanks in advance for considering reacting to any or al of them!
I really like your knowledge of music and the different instruments...👍👌....makes your reactions deeper and more thoughtful!!!.....😃💥....makes me appreciate your reaction more!...excellent job, my friend!!....keep up the great work!!...😁👍
God bless, appreciate ya watchin 🙏
Never heard Stealy Dan? Ohhh, you're in a for a treat! They're one of those "everyone loves or hates them" bands, and I love'em. Not a single bad song in the bunch!
Steely Dan for the most part can be labeled as SMOOTH.
Steely Dan is one of my top 3 favorite bands. Cool smooth jazz ROCK ! Listen close to the lyrics from their other songs.lots of drugs in there.. 😜🤣😂. ALSO look up the bands name STEELY DAN and what It means...😜🤣😂🤣 ! Their lyrics are very descriptive and evocative. AND YES Sade ! But she took her page out of Steely Dans book. So MANY fabulous songs and albums ....boy are you in for a treat. I remember being in 8th grade when the songs Deacon Blues and FM came out. I couldn’t get enough. The Gaucho and Aja albums are a MUST . Gaucho in particular non stop perfection. You need to listen to Black Cow, Bad Sneakers, (Dirty Work, and Reelin in the Years both from the same album as Do it Again) Don’t take Me Alive, Dr Wu, I.G.Y., I Got the News, Aja, Pretzel Logic off the album with the same title . My Old School, Kid Charlemagne (this song in particular is all about drugs. But so are many of their other songs. Get the lyrics and read them). Their lyrics are so well written. I wish I could write like Donald and Walter ...there are no real definitive answers out there about who wrote which lyrics. They are both geniuses ! Enjoy 😉
STEELY DAN, "DO IT AGAIN". WELCOME TOO GROOVY MUSIC.... GREAT REACTION
Grew up with Steely Dan❤️ RIP Walter Becker...
music is what unites. thank you for your reaction. these guys are brilliant
Liked and subscribed. Thank you very much. After loving this song for decades you pointed a few things out to me I never noticed before.
"Hey Nineteen" is really good, but this is one of the tightest bands you will ever listen to. It is all good. Nope. It's all GREAT!
There is more great music out there than any single one of us will ever hear in eighty five lifetimes. Show me more of what you come up with, please. :)
Watching u listen to the greats, is like sitting with a friend who has never heard the music of my youth. U make me laugh, smile and ya always put me in a good mood. 🦋✌🦋
Steely Dan songs never end ... they just lead you to anorher story 💯
Love this song...this great band has several good songs!
Classic Steely Dan. They were unique forever.
Love me some Stealy Dan. Thanks for sharing 😊
One of my favorite songs. Playing the shit out of that guitar. Damn.
Steely Dan's - Black Cow, Reelin' In the Years, Hey Nineteen, Rikki Don't Lose That number, and Peg!
SO THIS IS BASICALLY 2 EXCELLENT MUSICIANS ( DONALD FAGAN AND WALTER BECKER ) AND THEN THEY FILLED IN WITH SESSION PLAYERS ON THEIR ALBUMS. SO MANYYYYY GR8 SONGS JAY, I'M SURE YOU'VE HEARD A FEW ON THE RADIO: PEG, JOSIE, REELIN IN THE YEARS, ETC. ETC.! :)
steely dan is life bro. 'reelin in the years' 'night by night'
I've never heard that extended version before. Totally cool the way the bass lets loose at the end.
Another awesome Steely Dan song is Any Major Dude.
That's great driving music! Especially loud! Thanks!
Haitian Divorce and Show Biz Kids are masterpieces. My Old School is close.
yep
It's a Coral guitar (electric sitar) I love that sound
Have now come to the conclusion that this is about the best wild ass guitar solo ever.
Listen to all the diversity in this tune. Superior musicians.
Steely Dan music is top notch production wise. Need to check out Peg, Hey Nineteen, Rikki don’t lose that number, Deacon Blues & FM.
You'll never go wrong listening to Steely Dan. It's always about the music and the stellar solos.
The percussion instrument is guiro, combined with congas playing the tumbayo rhythm, it's one of the few basic conga patterns every working drummer could use knowing :)
Haha, you get it!
Kid charlemagne and peg will get you hooked.
I love that you seem to really know about music on your reactions. I appreciate the way you think and enjoy music. Look forward to watching more of your videos.
You're right, it is a sitar! They used the best session musicians.
An electric sitar.
Denny Dias played the electric sitar. Becker and Fagen joined HIS band. So he is not a hired session musician on this album.
I bought Aja upon it's release and it stayed on my turntable forever! And one of the few albums I still listen to in it's entirety.
The music for testing your headphones and speakers! Steely Dan is one of top 10 groups of last 50 years, and studio musicians made most of the sounds that Fagen and Becker arranged. . They knew what the end result should be and kept experimenting until they got it. I like your channel. Request FM for your next review.
That percussion instrument... You might be thinking of a Güiro. A hollow gourd you scrape with a stick. I think it's a cabasa, with the metal beads you twist in your hand.
You have just begun your journey into a rock/jazz supergroup
Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands. Their production is legendary
The main electric piano part was played on a Wurlitzer 200A. Awesome sound.
Steely Dan is epic! They groove on soooo many songs. True musicians!
Here's another 10 now do it again!
I see you makin that funk face! Yes! Groovin!😁
Listening to Steely Dan is like going on an adventure. Every song is different and you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.
You have no idea how much you have to look forward to.
Show Biz Kids. Nuff said!
Listen to Black Cow, it will blow your hip hop mind.
You seem to be a natural at interpreting music. Like your style and observations. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Canada
Happy to join this review group..Steely Dan got the best musicians in to perform their perfect songs. They were so talented.✌
The "Smoothest Music" of the 70s. These are a must. "Deacon Blues", "Hey Nineteen, "FM", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" This list will grown as more people post.
music from another dimension , to fly......... yes
