When ever I listen to this song my neighbors get to listen too!
Lmao 😆
Definitely one of their best and most underrated song!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️☮️🎤🎼🎸🎹
Steely Dan is the real deal! Intelligent yet very soulful music!
"Multitude of different genres blended into one song" is about as good of a capsule description you can get for Steely Dan.
Their music always has the most original feel to it, that's why it's still standing the test of time and finding another new generation of fans.
Great song! You can never go wrong with Steely Dan!
Here’s a further explanation of what it means in addition to what you read Jay. That was a great explanation of what SD’s music is. High class, no expenses spared and it always leaves you wanting more. 🔥
Bodhisattva is a human who has reached enlightenment, as the Buddha did, and can leave physical existence behind, but chooses to remain in human form to help others achieve freedom
Simple as the lyrics are, I've always thought it was a bit of a love song that they jazzed up to make up for not saying much; just a guy who has maybe had a moment of enlightenment, telling his girl how he's going to give it all up (sell my house in town) and be with her to make her happy (let me be the sparkle in your china, etc.).
Maybe overly optimistic on my part, and with it being SD I've never known how much I'd trust the guy to be telling the truth anyway, but hey there's my $0.02
@@missbelled6700 Hey I think you're on the right track with your interpretation and it makes sense.
Well what a GREAT GUY Bodhisattva is!
Man, that assessment you made about them put it all into words. They are the epitome of sophisticated. When I was in 8th grade, I got the 45 of “Ricky Don’t Lose That Number”. I played it on my cheap turntable till the needle went bad and messed up the record. The rest for me is history. They’re just so damned great.
This song is absolutely sick. Thanks, Jay.
If you get into Steely Dan, it's a rabbit hole which you will never escape.
You totally nailed it! Steely Dan is at whole other level. A Bodhisattva is an enlightened being who vows to stay with humanity until until all become enlightened
Another great reaction. When other rock bands relax at home, they listen to Steely Dan.
This entire album is amazing, one of the soundtracks of my HS days - we always wondered about the picture on the back of the album of the band members in a studio, which had a mysterious hand/arm reaching out to the mixing board.
If I recall, the song was a spoof of the Eastern meditation craze that was all the rage back then. Much like The Beatles did years earlier when they soured on yogi/guru Maharishi and his B.S.
Jay, for some reason, I decided to listen to each of your Steely Dan reactions tonight. I am really happy i did. Your analogy to the fine restaurant is right on. Ambience, food, wait staff, all performing well. But, it's an expensive place. For a listener to Steely Dan, the high price is your TIME. You have to take time to listen to what Steely Dan is saying. And Bro....you paid the price and got the reward.
I got my reward by watching your Steely Dan vids tonight. Thank you,
Ken
Love that analogy, J, that’s good (The fine dining restaurant that is worth it). Good pick-up on the 50s similarity and thanks for that research on Bodhisattva. I knew he was something like that but you gave me more specifics. Totally agree about them, the amount of quality tunes they have is just ultra elite.
LOVE your Steely Dan analogy to a high-end restaurant, and getting more than you paid for. My deserted island band.
Steely Dan had a multi-album run obsessing over the idea of a high class losers or 70s lounging failures, you hear it very plainly on Deacon Blues. But on this one in particular it's their classic American loser/loafer basically trying to get easy enlightenment - we all kind of know those people that jump from philosophy to philosophy, one day they're big into the healing power of crystals, the next day they're into CrossFit, they're looking for something to give them meaning and purpose without trying to earn it at all. I believe Fagen described it as a quick fix.
That's why he's asking for Bodhisattva too show him the shine of his Japan and sparkle of his China - he just wants that far east hippie meditation given to him without effort.
A boshusattva is someone that has attained enlightenment, but stayed active in the world to help others achieve enightenment.
Sanskrit
Your gut felt reaction was a perfect embodiment of both the song and the album title. Thanks, bruh.
Nice pickup on that 50’s rock n roll inspired point you made.
Bodi-sa-va An enlightened person.
Patrick Swayze played Bodi the enlightened one in the movie Point Break.
I wouldn't have known the definition of Bodhisattva if I had not watched your video. Up until now, I just like listening to the song.
Fantastic reaction! I've listen to this song 100 times but heard it for the first time during your reaction.
I just love your comments! They are thoughtful and intelligent! Thanks.
This song is a great example of one thing I really appreciate about SD, they use a lot of different instruments in a way that isn't overwhelming and allows you to not only appreciate each instrument but understand how they contribute to the whole song. It's like a music appreciation lesson in every song.
They also use less reverb which makes it easier to hear every instrument more clearly. It’s what gives Steely Dan music that clean sound.
Love your reactions, Jay. 20 years after Gaucho (the title cut being their swan song and sadly the most misinterpreted song they ever did) Fagen and Becker reunited and swept the Grammys with the album Two Against Nature. Though Cousin Dupree won for best song, the title cut is my favorite, rife with percusions and multiple tempos and lyrics that are are downright evil. After hearing it you'll have to calm down with the absolute smoothness of Jack of Speed, another gem. The album is way ignored. You'll be diving into the deep end of the pool. Promise.
Nice reaction.....Pure rock-jazz talent!
Yeah bro you understand their aesthetic. Props.
Another well done, thoughtful analysis. Good job! :)
A Bodhisattva is a human who has reached enlightenment, like the Buddha.
A very good and well-thought-out reaction.
Bodhisattva - Wikipedia
bodhisattva from en.m.wikipedia.org
In Mahayana Buddhism, a bodhisattva refers to anyone who has generated bodhicitta, a spontaneous wish and compassionate mind to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
A bodhisattva is a spiritual seeker who has achieved nirvana but hangs around with mooks like us to show us a better way.
A Kobe Steak in Hong Kong ~ You Got it Man! Steely Dan.. A five star Michelin Restaurant! Great Vid Man.. Bodhisattva (:
When this song came out it was just after the free love Esalen-EST-Moonie-Hare Krishna-Rajneesh era of new age self improvement workshops, spiritual awakening retreats, hippies turning into yuppies, et al - the song was commenting on the commercialism associated with most of it.
Enjoyed your reaction and the curiosity it evoked. 😊
I still can't believe I got to see this band live in Virginia Beach right b4 Walter Becker passed. A high class act throughout! Great reaction. Timeless music....never grows old.
Steely Dan! It's so worth it! 😊
Its a standard fifties boogie beat , but the virtuosity of the instrumentation kicks this up to some serious next level shit !
Oh I love this song. I hope I recommended it to you awhile ago. Love the groove. Yeah very hard to pronounce. My other fav is THE FEZ
I think it is awesome such a high end world class band is named after an adult toy!
Aw, so sweet
jay, great reaction, you really know and appreciate what it takes to make great music. Steely Dan are the epitamy of professionalism when it comes to music.. and you acknowledge it and appreciate it. Awesome my man.
Liked your comments brother you know your music!!!
you said it - musicianship!
Love Steely Dan. One of those one of a kind, genuis bands. King Of The World is my fav, but I recommend this for first timers! Insane beat
Great reaction, man! The Moog synth sounds are so pleasing to the ears. "The Fez" is another uniquely SD song, with a Moog melody, in the middle part of it.
Bodhisattva (BO-HES-TAV-AH) means to bow or hold in deep respect, much like KAUTAU (cow-ta-ow). Example: People who are Muslim pray 3x's daily, facing towards Mecca, and KAUTAUING in deep respect on thier knees. Spirtully it is really beautiful. Loved your review.
This song rules!
Awesome! Great work. ✌
One of the best examples of lead guitar ever. Underrated, but absolutely incredible.
“Knowledge is power!” Keep digging with these guys. 🤟🏻✌🏻
Summarized on point!
They are so good, imagine, I forgot about this one. Played this record so many times, this song actually got stuck on this one and skipped skipped...forgot about that too!
You just gave the most intuitive reaction I’ve seen in the new phenomenon of reaction videos. Obviously, you’re a smart guy with a good ear. If I could make a suggestion, check Mercenary Territory from Little Feat’s live LP, Waiting For Columbus. Listen for Lenny Pickett’s (Tower Of Power, musical director for SNL) sax solo. Incendiary fire. The song percolates, the bass leads into the sax. Exquisite live music. Check you out.
Any song off of Two Against Nature is a must do.
Another fantastic reaction/analysis of the Dan, thanks for doing this! If you got the time there's a video of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang performing this...real cute...😁
The next track on this Countdown To Ecstasy album is another great song worth listening to called Razor Boy. The slide guitar by Jeff " Skunk " Baxter is phenomenal, as also the xylophone by Victor Feldman. The album is from 1973
Perfection.
WE ALL ARE ON THE BODHISATTVA JOURNEY TO ACHIEVE OUR BUDDHA NATURE.
A bodhisattva is a saint who lives life to benefit others rather than seek personal Nirvana. Short version. It's sanskrit/hindu/Buddhist.
The guitar part in the middle seems inspired by Les Paul. (Starts at 4:41)
I always got the sense they were trying to top the guitar harmony they’d done on Reeling in the Years, and I think they pulled it off!👍🏼🎸😎
My best friend, and drummer in the band i'm in, we always try to hit each other with songs that the other can't play ( I play guitar), usually unsuccessfully, but when he hit me with this, I struggled with it for months on end. The solo is just hard. But great.
Starting to get a feel for what you like. Getting back to Chicago; their seventh album has a track named Aire. Terry Kath does an amazing solo in the middle, but the rest of the song has everything I think you value: musicianship, production, etc. I spend a lot of time listening to SD and early Chicago.
Saw them do this on a tv. show. Wow mind blown !!!
You will never go wrong with Steely Dan as far as I'm concerned never heard of bad song
Do HAITIAN DIVORCE!
No doubt. He will enjoy the Reggae feel and funny story.
Exactly, George. And the talkbox guitar is pretty sweet, too.
Soulful Elegance
Listen to the live version. It was the B side for Hey Nineteen
Perfect Analogy. As usual .
IMELDA MAY with JEFF BECK- IMELDA MAY/JEFF BECK "REMEMBER"- IMELDA MAY -BE THE FIRST BRUH
These guys were genius level & studio Gods, IMHO. Bodhisattva, in Buddhism, basically is an enlightened soul who stays involved in helping to eliminate human suffering out of compassion. Just a guess, tho. lol
And the restaurant has a six month wait for a reservation.
The GOAT band? Quite possibly...
Black Friday next...
"Bodhisattva" is from Sanskrit, an ancient language of India.
For some reason this song gets left out of the reactions, but it's fire.
Please do My Rival by Steely Dan
Steely Dan wrote this song to make fun of the Beatles who went to India to study religion.
(in Mahayana Buddhism) a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings. That's Bodhisattva.
"Get off my channel with that shit"
I always laugh.
you need to do a steely dan album reaction for patreon
Hey Jah...i paid requested zoom by Commodores April 1st...any ideas when u think u get to it?
Steely Dan was.... all concept
Can't go wrong with anything from Steely Dan. Hey look further into what the term BODHISATTVA means, you'll be intrigued. Have you tried listening to the band YES??
Duuuude, it's kinda like nirvana for Buddhists.
Hey, I messaged you the links for my patreon request, did you get it?
Man, the lyrics are pretty sparse in this but this song still paints pretty pictures in my head.
That's the wrong pronunciations, but you'll hear it in the song . I believe it's a Chinese or Japanese God.
Gated reverb wtf? Dude you're almost a decade early :D
Hear my intro!
Decorum is not the same as decor.
