When real musicians get off work, they listen to Steely Dan.
This song makes a grown man cry. Has so much feel. I heard this as a little kid when this first came out and it blew my mind. Just great music.
I LOVE to watch a musician with great ears discover Aja. Timeless.
Steely Dan is one of the most underrated bands of all time,ALL TIME
Now you see what all the fuss is about with SD. Ahead of their time is an understatement. Aja usually has this effect on most people who hear it for the first time. The more you hear it, the more you’ll hear in it. Great reaction Jay and welcome to the Dan Fan Club. Thank you for doing this!
It seems they are still ahead of their time...what other band has topped this to this day?
Donald Fagen - lead vocals, synthesizer, police whistle
Steve Gadd - drums
Victor Feldman - percussion, vibraphone
Chuck Rainey - bass guitar
Walter Becker, Denny Dias and Larry Carlton - guitars
Michael Omartian - piano
Joe Sample - electric piano
Wayne Shorter - tenor saxophone
Timothy B. Schmit - backing vocals
11 card carrying Legends on this track. Murderers row.
@@joeday4293 Absolutely!
@@joeday4293 No doubt about it....
They had great fortune that people like Wayne Shorter of Miles Davis Band and Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius on Bass played on spme of their biggest successes. They often used the world famous Bernard Purdie on drums...his half-time shuffle is the stuff of legend. He played on more ht albums than i have years left. Jeff Porcaro played drums on the Katy Lied LP and Gaucho, if i'm not mistaken.
Point is, they had their choice of the Cream of the Crop Musicians that wanted to work with them...Franks Zappa did much the same, but quite different music. Oh, and @Tom D Denny Diaz (founding member, too) played all the solo parts in the guitar work -dude has beautiful Legato on all his runs and scalar moves.
@@kilgoretrout3966 Jeff Porcaro plays on the Pretzel Logic album as well
They were perfectionists and it shows in every song they do. Every song is different and it's like going on a new adventure. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
So true!
I know this song and the album for over forty years and it still gives me goosepomps everytime I hear it.
Back in my day, when this album was released, it was the benchmark for testing great stereo components, speakers and the like. Awesome stuff here. As well, my being a drummer, the fills on this particular song are top notch...
The dan is not just a band , theDan is an aestetic. All albums deserve your attention. All works of art and science.spectacular engineering and craftsmanship. Enjoy 3cheers from Canada. A Dan fan .
Patricia Hopey, totalmente de acuerdo contigo, los Steely Dan son en sí una Obra Maestra.
The Aja album is been considered under professional musicians as the best produced album in every genre jazz pop fusion ever made another one is the Nightfly from Donald Fagen 1982 first digital recording !
The drummer just slays on this song. 🥁
Nothing like the reaction during that moment when Gadd comes in hot on the drums. Always priceless.
That's the legendary, iconic, GREAT Wayne shorter on tenor sax, who started with the likes of Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan and Miles Davis as both a sideman and leader, and then became the powerful sound behind Weather report with Jaco Pastorius and others. Becker and Fagen attracted some of the finest session players on the planet.
Hell, he turned them down multiple times lol.
I feel this is one of the best piece of music ever created.
You identify instruments better than I could ever do. How did you come about this knowledge? Musical family?
Love this band. This was my cultured jams. Got me into jazz fusion heavily, at the ripe age of 17. Glad you liked the spice on this track.
You’re one of the best reaction hosts on RUclips, honestly. You’re genuinely interested in music, clearly know your instruments, and like to educate and culture yourself through music. It’s one of the more enjoyable parts of watching your channel. And you make your videos about the music itself, about the exploration, discovery of it. A lot of other reaction channels make it a narcissistic display - who can act more “blown away” by the music and who can post the most outrageous facial expression in their video thumbnail. I look forward to your videos, I mute most of the other channels. Props for promoting good music the right way, making it about education and culture. Respect brother.
One of the greatest bands of all time...truth!
I shake my head in disbelief at Steve Gadd's drum solos.....damnnnn
The perfect album, like it literally couldn’t have been any better produced. So clean and pro and smooth throughout
Love seeing younger people hear what I got to hear back in the day. This came out when I was a college sophomore, still one of my fav albums of all time!!!
Their music is an awakening. It is spiritual. It is the embodiment of style, taste, timing, arrangement, quality and class, but the one thing it doesn't do is discriminate for it's there for all to enjoy. Their music is me and I am their music.
Steely Dan cared about one thing......
high quality story telling.. and perfection 🥁🎸😎🎹🎷🎺
Wayne Shorter's sax' playing has me in tears, every time.
Your next recommended Steely Dan song: “FM (No Static at All)”
Already on my channel brotha
@@jayrahvisions Man, not only did you already do that song, but I see that I watched and even commented. The mind is the first to go when you getting old! I’m still loving your reactions though, no matter how senile I get. Thanks for keeping it real.
@@kylebakke594 😄 #Facts 🤷🏽♀️
The gold standard in production quality.
I think it was Denny Dias doing the fills and leads when you asked about the guitarist. 3 guitarists are credited on the track. Chuck Rainey on bass the jazz legend Wayne Shorter does the amazing tenor solo, and Steve Gadd on drums.
It's an amazing song and an amazing recording with so many great performances.
One of the greatest drummers around, you’ll grow to love those drum breaks kid
True masters of their instruments.
Aja is the best pop/jazz progressive song ever. I get goosebumps whenever I hear it. The solo’s are part of the fantasy! A planet called AJa!
This song is just a masterpiece. That is one of the best drum solos ever IMO. Starts out serene and smooth then hits you with the great Wayne Shorter on sax and Steve Gaad blowing up his drums. One of the most perfectly produced albums of all times.
Everybody on this song are the top of the top!..The cream of the crop!..Pretty damn near impossible to get any better than this line-up.
You may have to start keeping track of how many times during any song you make the "stink face" while enjoying the sound. I have been listening to Steely Dan for 50 years, and I still get that reaction. Tells you how good it really is.
Every album Steely Dan did was top-notch from start to finish. One of my favorite bands of all time. Donald Fagen is just unbelievable with his talent.
One of the best albums ever put out for production value
Jay, I love watching your reactions! I realize that many people just listen to music and their enjoyment comes from the overall feel of the song. But, I breakdown songs into much smaller bites just like you do! There are SO MANY elements, or layers if you will! Thanks, brother, keep up the great job!
Steve Gadd's drumming in this song is epic...!!!!!
I have heard this song hundreds of times since it first released. I still get enthralled with it every time I hear it. That, and hearing something new I hadn’t noticed before so many, many times. Glad you got to enjoy the experience of listening to this one. Definitely a great!
Sonically perfect!!! Steely Dan the perfectionist!
If you haven’t yet “kid charlemagne “ by steely dan Great song with an interesting story✌️
Damn the ‘80 were fun😀
With a guitar solo by Larry Carlton that will curdle the milk in your refrigerator.

@@troysaylors8884 hehheh!
70's bro.
And just when you thought the song couldnt get any better they bring in the sax two thirds of the way through then add those drums! Those freakin' drums! Impeccable musicianship, such an amazing blending of music! My favorite song by The Dan!!!
Pretty much my reaction first time I heard this back in the 70s. So many great players on their albums. But Steve Gadd especially killed it and Wayne Shorter is a musical God of his generation. All of their stuff needs to be heard.
The most incredible drum fill and outro I think I’ve ever heard. Steve Gadd- respect!
Welcome to Dan Land, my friend. This entire album is their masterpiece.
You will love all their stuff- you’re so musical. You’ll also go nuts for fusion band Snarky Puppy. ( Lingus is amazing. )
When I first heard the Steve Gadd drum solos in this song, my life changed. I saved money cleaning dog cages at a pet store for weeks to buy this album. Total right move! I got HOURS and HOURS of enjoyment out of this album!
I appreciate and dig your reactions. You've landed on the Gold Standard of all of popular music. There's nothing to compare with Steely Dan in terms of the quality, precision, genius and everything else in the music itself - before or after. The bar they set - no one else has reached that level with the consistency the Dan achieved. The album Aja is top of a mindblowing pile. Enjoy the epic ride. P.S. Check out Fagen's second solo album Kamakiriad (1993) where he reunited with Walter Becker after their 1980 split. Fire.
Enjoyed your reaction -- you clearly hear, feel, and deeply appreciate music. I grew up with this music, I remember waiting and saving up for the newest album releases by Steely Dan (among many others). They are among the most eclectic and creative musicians I have ever heard, and remain fresh even today based on your reaction and others I've seen. Check out more of their stuff and you will be constantly amazed.
I know this is 2 years old, but so great to see a young man's mind explode from Aja the way all our minds exploded when we first heard it. The exact same way. Good for you :)
Despite its complexity, and unlike most of the other tracks on the album, "Aja" took a very short time to record, which Steely Dan credit to the musicians' ability to learn it quickly, without rehearsals. Denny Dias's guitar work, including a solo, marked the last appearance on a Steely Dan record by any other founding member of the group. On the other hand, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Steve Gadd made their first appearances here. Both play solos during the song's instrumental break that have contributed greatly to its reputation, solos which have been considered among their finest work; Gadd's, the first drum solo in a Steely Dan song, in the song's tag, was recorded in just two takes. Jazz critic Ben Sidran later called the recording session "a moment when ... pop music suddenly took a turn left."
You could spend forever on Steely Dan. They’re THAT good. Please play more. It really doesn’t matter which song you pick. Just anything.
I've been enjoying "AJA" for 43 years... since I was 14... and seeing you enjoy this... joyful.
The impeccable taste and playing of Wayne Shorter. Gorgeous. That is all.
My favorite song on my favorite Steely Dan album amongst so many great tunes and albums by the Kings of production!
Great tune and album from the Great Steely Dan ❤️☝️💫
One of my fav bands since the 70s! There are so many instruments during that break! It's melded so well you wouldn't know it.
The keyboard and percussion deliver. They gold.Smooth is The Dan.No cap!
A truly outstanding display of musicianship.....and a great reaction. SQ was superb because vinyl mastering was the best!
The mash-up of anyone's face when they discover Steely Dan is PRICELESS! I'm an old gal and was grooving to Steely Dan when I was a young girl. It just warms my heart to see young people experience them! Bravo to you for being so open.
J, The album Aja won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical (1977) and received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Should not be surprising, as this is your 7th reaction to them.
Hope you dive into this album more. It is a treasure. Try "Deacon Blues"
That is my favorite Steely Dan song to sit and concentrate on. Other songs might feel more "fun", but this is one you sit and truly *listen* to. And this is possibly my favorite reaction to it. I could see you feeling it. My favorite little thing hidden inside of it, is that to me, one of the instruments sounds like the clomping hooves of the horses at the dude ranch. I love that.
Steely Dan used the best session musicians. Wayne Shorter, from Weather Report, on tenor sax; he's so good!
Steve Gadd just blows the break out of the park! I think this is my fav Steely Dan song.. period. That's saying a lot with all the awesome songs they've crafted.
This is in my top 5 songs of all time. As soon as it begins, I feel some calmness, like within the first 5 seconds. Also, the guitar solo is by Denny Dias who actually was a founding member but for this record was a guest, just like the rest of the crew (besides Donald & Walter).
Great to watch your on=point, deeply felt reactions. You are always so emotionally available, and thanks for that.
Young Man!
It warms my heart to see you online.
It warms my heart to see you reacting to Steely Dan!
Now think about this.... this album was released in September 1977. Let that sink in.
Enjoy the ride!
David G
Loved your reaction, you cannot beat Steely Dan, quality music, fantastic drumming as well.
the late great Wayne Shorter (from Weather Report and Miles Davis) on Sax
You asked. Best. Leo.
Credits adapted from the album liner notes and Donald Breithaupt's book:[12][13]

Victor Feldman - percussion, vibraphone
Chuck Rainey - bass guitar
Walter Becker, Denny Dias and Larry Carlton - guitars
Michael Omartian - piano
Joe Sample - electric piano
Wayne Shorter - tenor saxophone
Timothy B. Schmit - backing vocals
Not only is their production top shelf, the musicianship and chops on any Steely Dan track is the best.
Denny Dias plays the 'Jazzy/Bop' solo guitar phrases @ 4:31-5:05 as well as the final ones @ 5:54 - 6:20. Walter Becker plays those bluesy guitar solo phrases between 5:11 and 5:48. Steve Gadd on Drums, Chuck Rainey on bass. Joe Sample on Fender Rhodes electric piano, Michael Omartian on the acoustic piano, the Rhythm guitars are Larry Carlton. The Marimba is played by multi instrumentalist Victor Feldman. Donald Fagen sings lead and backing vocals, and plays the whistle and the synthesisers (most prominently heard at the end of the tune, on the ending vamp to the final fade out). Wayne Shorter plays the tenor saxophone solo. Timothy B. Schmidt sing backing vocals.
you rock... nice reaction video..great song, great band. Everytime I hear them I realise just how good they are, just so sublime and that's not something I can say about any other band.
I appreciate you man my all time favorite song favorite song best band in the world I loved your reaction you rule
This is too much for some people. But not those who know what it is. Perfection and grace who can funk as good as the very best. Top shelf to say the least. Sounds like Denny Dias on guitar. He plays on "Do it Again" also. Smoother than whiskey. I like it.
Steve Gadd on drums..My favorite drummer of all time..The guy is just perfect every time!
Steely Dan is one of my top 5 favorite groups. Too many greatest tunes that are unique in the rock/jazz genre.
This is a great album. When I want to go back to the 70s in my zone for my ambient condition Steely Dan'll set The Groovy situation. Listening to music 4 unique instrument articulation. Nothing synthetic but organic for sure an old soul born in 74 Just takes a couple time I'll run in it though but when it comes to messing around with Jim it's something you just don't want to do...
It is everything you look for in a musical composition. I bought it upon it's release and couldn't get it off of my turntable for a very very long time.
The whole album is great listen to it all
"Playlist."
But you haven't even heard the drum solo yet. Heh.
This is studio drumming legend Steve Gadd on drums. Three things to know about this drum track: 1) It's the Modern Drummer readers poll performance of the year for 1977. 2) Gadd never heard this song before the day of the session. He had the rest of the band run it down once while he marked the score, then he SIGHTREAD THIS IN ONE TAKE, THE ONLY TIME HE EVER PLAYED THIS SONG BEGINNING TO END. 3) He was so blasted on drugs he didn't even remember recording it. When he heard the playback several weeks later, he said, "That's great - who's the drummer?" "Uh... that's you, Steve." "Wow, I'm a *motherfucker*." 😆😆😆😆
By the way, the complete lineup on this one:
Steely Dan:
Donald Fagen - Vocals, synth, whistle
Walter Becker - rhythm guitar
With:
Denny Dias - guitar (studio legend and founding member)
Larry Carlton - guitar (studio legend)
Victor Feldman - percussion (jazz legend)
Joe Sample - Rhodes piano (jazz legend)
Michael Omartian - piano (jazz/studio legend)
Chuck Rainey - bass (soul/funk/R&B/studio legend, best known for Aretha's "Rock Steady")
Steve Gadd - drums (possibly the greatest session drummer of all, see above)
Wayne Shorter - saxophone (jazz TITAN and I would NOT bullshit you)
Ain't no lie either, Gadd is one of THE best ever!!
Gadd playing drums behind Shorter’s sax solo twice has to be unique in the history of modern music
@Mike Kelly The story as told by "Aja" producer Gary Katz: fivethingsseenandheard.com/tag/steve-gadd/
@@joeday4293 Skunk Baxter also played with them sometimes.
Great reaction, especially the jazz observations. These guys were all about combining jazz with rock/R&B/funk with every song containing at least 1 jaw dropping solo or interlude or both haha! Keep diggin' in you wont be disappointed
I saw Larry Carlton live in 87, in a small theater, in Charlotte. OMFG!
Never really got that much into SD, but I know they are nothing but the best in the business...SO many great tunes from them, several of which are ones that I know better than this tune. Had I known about the killer drums I would have been listening to this one as well LOL!! SHAME on me, what kind of drummer AM I LOL! Great reaction, thanks!!
The horn is famous Blue Note legend Wayne Shorter who played with every jazz giant. A great story about how they got him to play on the song.
Reelin in the years
Ricki dont lose that number.
Bodisattva
Fantastic Steel Dan hits
Fagan and Becker didn't mind space, a chance to emphasize sound and nuance.
Glad to watch this and share it with you. Your knowledge of music is certainly
beyond mine and I enjoy your input. Many can't analyze why they like something,
just an impulse or feel. That's most of us. However, you dial it in and put labels
on the intricacies.
Really appreciate your reactions.
The "samba" drum shuffle at the end never fails to blow my mind.
that is what you call an absolute MASTERPIECE
I'm glad Steely Dan is making a bit of a comeback. You sir, have a good ear. Keep up the good work man.
That might have been the most reaction I have seen for this song. And that is saying something. It always gets an amazed reaction. How could it get anything else?
Multiple eargasm selection.;
simply amazing. for my money, this was their best work. just incredible
The complexity of the chords, the lyrics....AND a referee whistle. BOOM
“Up on the hill they think I’m ok, or so they say”...
One of the best songs- EVER,
I was waiting for your reaction when the sax hit. Didn't disappoint!
These guys looked at the frequency response you could get out of vinyl and said "Sure, fill 'er up." Beautifully composed, you'll often hear of audiophiles using Aja to test a new setup, because it is so pristine has the full range of highs and lows, quiet parts and everything firing all at once...
So smooth and all captured on one of the best recordings ever, so clean. This has been my "test track" for any new audio equipment for many years.
I'm an old dude who didn't appreciate this song or this band when Aja was released. I came around. One of my cats is named Aja. The stink face you make through most of this song is exactly how I feel every time I hear it.
I love this album! I also love every album before this. Steely Dan, were the most incredible force. Enjoy!
The whole suite was basically a showpiece for Shorter and Gadd to blow the minds of everyone until the end of time
