Holy smokes it feels good getting lost in good music! So nice to check out and get lost for a while. Insane production here and I'm looking forward to more of it.
KEY WORD,GOOD MUSIC!🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Steely Dan and Rush are untouchable in what they do, no one comes close !!!!
I agree. They both have the rare ability to play with incredible muscianship while writing songs that are accessible to the average listener.
@Zoey The Savannah me too!
Steely Dan's secret? The host of great session players they brought in to play on almost every album.
Quality players, quality production.
Glad you are enjoying the Dan. It’s a deep rabbit hole bro, they literally don’t have a bad song. They put so much time and thought into every song on every album.
Love their musicianship so much and their cynical and often funny lyrics are some of the best in music. It only gets better the more you listen.
Jazz-rock bands like Steely Dan make some of the best music ever. The melodies, the beats, and the flow of the songs are flawless.
Recommended: Dirty Work, Reeling In The Years, Bodhisattva, My Old School, Your Gold Teeth, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Doctor Wu, Any Major Dude Will Tell You.....the list goes on and on.....
...YES to all the above recommendations. My Old School keeps on building and building up. so many layers in their music. Reeling, Dirty Work, Rikki, all songs you will add to your permanent playlist. Peace to you on the path...
How did I miss this reaction? Somebody slap me please!
PLEASE PLEASE react to "Don't Take Me Alive"
Just wait till you get to the guitar heavy Steely Dan stuff. It's so incredibly strong. Try Reeling in the years, and then Bhodisattva, and then anything from The Royal Scam. Guitar heaven.
First solo is an Electric Sitar played By Denny Diaz I believe
One hallmark of SD is they pass the groove around like a joint.
Their production is as good as it gets! I didn't realize how good until I listened with headphones. I was into hard rock as a kid and never really gave this band the attention they deserve! Now at 59 I can't believe how good they really are and wish I had been more open minded like your being! Better late than never I guess. I enjoyed your reaction, have subscribed and looking forward to more.
Steely Dan is next level appreciation... Been a fan for literally decades!! You're young and healthy, it'll pass you by before you know it. Another great song by them is "Aja", from the Aja album...
The drum solo within the Aja track will blow you away especially within the context of the rest of the song.
Yes, more Steely Dan please 😊 You can’t go wrong, but you can go extra right. I suggest Here at the western world, Your gold teeth II and The Boston Rag
Good suggestions!
Steely Dan is my all time favorite group.
Analog recording with great microphones. The keyboard sounds like a Hammond with a Leslie speaker but in reality it was a cheap electric keyboard. This is just classic jazzy rock at it’s finest. I grew up with this band and thrilled that the young have rediscovered it.😎✌️
I know it's been 3 months, but it's fun to watch a newbie to Steely Dan go down that rabbit hole.
I heard it said years ago that they are the band other bands listen to when they are at home
They are my fav to listen to at work
Yea!!!! More Steely Dan. Ready to fall down this Rabbit hole. 🙏🏾 Praying you feel better. 😉 Gotta make it thru Fly By Night Album. 😏🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Steely Dan's first song, on their first album, and their first hit. Next comes "Reeling In The Years" which is their second hit, and in the RRHOF.
It's good to find a reactor that appreciates good sound production, it's what Steely Dan is know for. The 2 guys Dona'd Fagen (vocals, keyboards) and Walter Becker (guitar) were the only members, hey hired studio musicians to play their songs. There's a You Tube video on the making of their album "Aja" and they talk about how they hired 7 or 8 different guitarists to do the solo for 1 song, They spent a week just trying to get that guitar part recorded.
Their music is excellent, I'll watch any reaction you do to their music. Recommendations: Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Reelin' in the Years, Josie, Bodhisattva, Hey Nineteen, Peg.
You are impressed because of the quality and style of their music. No one comes close. Hope you get better soon!
These guys can do it all!!
Can't buy a thrill was a fantastic Debut album for Steely Dan. Reeling in the years, Dirty Work, Midnight Cruiser are all great cuts as well, but really the whole album is good. Steely Dan is one of those Bands like Rush that have very few if any Duds! They are so talented, so musically gifted, that crappy music just didn't get released. SD, like Rush, is a wonderful Rabbit hole to explore! RUclipsr DramasydETV is currently doing what you are doing with Rush and beginning with the first album and going through them in chronological order. He's up to the Aja album (Black Cow is the opener) Fantastic ride! They don't have half the albums Rush has but it's worth doing at some point. The deep cuts make it so worthwhile!
Well said! They just don’t put out a bad product. Such perfectionists! Their whole catalog, including Fagen and Becker’s solo works are absolute top tier
Steely Dan is a ‘sound’ treatment for COVID-19. Nice reaction, hope you’re feeling better soon.
i love soso much this song! discovered this band a year ago, it's simply so good!
Sorry you’ve caught the corona bug. Glad you’ve caught the Steely Dan bug! I could easily list 50 great SD songs, but I’ll keep it to a handful. Try any of the following next:
“Green Earrings”
“Rikki Don’t Lose That Number “
“Aja”
“Night By Night”
“Your Gold Teeth”
“Kid Charlemagne”
I have thought for years that this is easily one of the top 5 sitar or guitar or whatever solos or even songs in general ever laid to vinyl..thx for being a great commenter...glad you got to this one...one of the best ever...so many little touches of jazzy guitar perfection..superb almost unsurpassed minimalist badass arrangement
Hi from the UK, hope your feeling better. Your Steely Dan reactions came up on my newsfeed and I sub'd straight away, love the Dan ❤. I also love Floyd, Zeppelin & Cream and will always listen to any reactions to them.
I agree about the lyrics, first listen should always be about the overall effect the song has on you.
Great comments mate. Get well soon. More Steely Dan please .
This is Steely Dan's very first track on their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill, when they had a formal band. Fagen & Becker were just 24 and 22 when this was released. Just brilliant and classic. The first guitar solo is actually an electric sitar performed by Denny Diaz. As a guitarist, you will find a lot to love among their 70+ song catalog. Their lyrics portray sexual predation, revenge, drug addiction, murder, and every other sin imaginable. Enjoy the ride.
Got the Covid right now, too. Loved your take on Do It Again!
Dude, you are going to get so deep into Steely Dan that you won’t be able to come up. Their catalog of exception work is beyond the pale.
AJA is a masterpiece!
Too many to list hear, but start listening and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about!
Hope your health is restored!
The Dan never ever disappoint 🙌
You should take your own advice and do a complete listen of the "Aja" album. I dare ya. There is also a YT documentary less than an hour long you can watch on the making of the "Aja" album which will give you better insight to their production standards. You won't regret it.
FM by Steely Dan is a classic...
Yessss
Save Aja for the last.....that's the masterpiece.
Jimmy Page (yep, that one), described the guitar on Reelin In The Years as his favourite solo
Oh get well soon dude!
Oh, there you are! Good to have you back!
Nice choice, by the way. Put some Steely Dan on a dart board and play whatever you hit.
Can't go wrong!
Killer musicianship, killer production, amazing songwriting. Check out “Babylon Sisters”, “FM” and “Peg” for starters. And “Kid Charlemaine”, too.
Or just pick any track from any of their albums and you'll be fine. As I think you've discovered, from your limited exposure to Steely Dan - there are no wrong answers! Also, hoping for a speedy recovery from Covid.
Hope you get through the virus without severe complications. Also, I just subscribed.
As a guitarist, you should definitely check out Kid Charlemagne & Don't Take Me Alive. For production you must hear the title cut of Aja, often considered as the masterpiece of Steely Dan.
From the Great Album-Cant buy a Chill. Love the dark background.
Check out "Home at Last" from the Dan, you will dig it my friend.
I would highly recommend Movin On by Bob James and Earl Klugh on the album Cool. Mr. Klugh is one of my favorite jazz guitarist.
Go on to Wikipedia and look up albums released in 1972 and you’ll find that there’s a lot of easy listening music there. 1972 was a very chill time. I was only five but my older brothers and sisters had just about every album from 1972 between the six of them they all had at least one of the albums that were produced in 1972 and it was such a chill time
Graduated H.S. in '72. They were always one of my favorites and still are. They are perfection!
No loops in those days, musicians playing music live! Brilliant
Green Earrings by the Dan. Chuck Raney on bass killing it.
👍
A great song by SD about addiction, addictive behavior, and how we as human indulge in such negative behaviors because it's comforting, familiar, or necessary to our personality. More please. The entire Aja album is a good start. SD songs are better appreciated with lyric videos. Also listen to "Reelin' In The Years" and "Dirty Work", their two other big hits from this album.
If you want to follow Steely Dan: Start with this song and next do another one from this album: Reelin in the years. Next go to My old school (for added horns) and then to the Aja album: Peg, Bhodisattva, Aja then Deacon blues and Ricki don't lose that number. This song is about addictions and repeating mistakes: Violence, sex and gambling.....and we do it again (repeat the same mistakes) even though we don't want to.
So good that even the rona can’t kill the magic.
more steely dan more views :)
If you are looking for Production, "Dark Side of the Moon", 1973!
Hope you're feeling better by now. Please listen to the title track on the Aja album. Based on this review and your review of Black Cow, it will blow you away.
You said "Holy cow" lol! Any reference to "Black Cow"? Lmao!
AJA next please! Now there's some production for you! 😍🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
That was an electric SITAR solo you heard, BTW, not a guitar.
Check out ONLY A FOOL WOULD SAY THAT
believe you'd dig it too
I like watching your reaction and listening to your commentary but's kind of strange that you played Steely Dan on the Rush channel. :) You've got a lot to offer... keep branching out.
I love Steely Dan, but you asked for other suggestions, so here goes. Please take a moment to listen to Beth Hart. She’s quite possibly the best female blues singers of all time. Her voice is sweet, melodic, smoky, powerful, raspy, and just plain mesmerizing. Also anything she does with guitarist Joe Bonomassa is simply amazing. Thanks for your consideration.
Take a listen to Thomas Dolby “Flat Earth, please!!
Interesting, I just went through your videos and you only listened to 2 Steely Dan songs. Such a shame because they were the most amazing band to grace this earth. No other musicians were perfectionist like them.
I know amazing isn't it..... hey been a while need to do aja.
They sounded the same live....Thats it with classic bands.....
I'm a bass player. Ya gotta listen close but the bass player is a monster. Take loads of vitamin C and vitamin A. My friend has Covid19. She has the headaches and now has horrible insomnia Get better
ANYTHING BY STEELY DAN IS FAB NO SUCK MUSIC
TRY KID CHARLEMAGNE LARRY CARLTON WILL UPSET YOU SUCH GREAT GUITAR.
AJA,DR WU, ANY ALBUM ALL GOOD.
FEEL BETTER
FORGOT FM BY ALL MEANS
If you're a guitarist that isn't familiar with Steely Dan's full catalog you're doing yourself a disservice. It will change your musical worldview for the better.
