I always loved Caress and could never understand all the hate. No it isn't a smooth ride, but I think that's part of its beauty. It gave the listener a taste of what to expect now the band had "their sound". Again, nice reaction.

I love this song so much. The fact that it is loosely based on Ayn Rand's Anthem, Overture with riffs (and cannons!) from the 1812 Overture, Neil's drums in Priests, Alex's sweet guitar in Discovery, and Geddy's angelic voice sprinkled here and there. I cry every time during Discovery and Soliloquy. This song formed my music tastes for the rest of my life when I was young.

I think that it's a mistake to assume that the complex time signature we find in Rush tracks is something "easy" and "natural" for them. Some time ago I watched an interview with Neil Peart where he was explaining exactly this. At the time he said that when they compose a new song usually they have to work each part alone and the hardest job of all is to make one part to flow to the next part seamlessly because the complexity of time signature and such. I remember that he said how it is hard for himself to achieve the perfect result and things not sound sloppy. In short, I believe that more than their incredible quality as musicians, there is a LOT of hard work in each track.

I love the happiness that is implicit in this record! And of course, Alex guitars are insane. Ever!

This was the really first Rush song that caught me. It was in 1984, the year that "Grace Under Pressure" was released.

Alex lifeson has never been a shred type of guitar player like dime bag or ZACH.. but he carved out his own style and some of the stuff he played is so iconic you remember it forever You don’t have to be Steve Vai or Satriani to touch people’s ears and their heart like rush has done for 45 years

I love rush every single album… not exactly the kind of music you wanna put on the stereo if you got a chick over at the house.. girls don’t seem to dig rush like musicians do… I don’t know why that is.. when I was dating my wife I would try to put on farewell to Kings and she was like what the fuck… she learned

People that aren’t really aware of Tommy Bullen should check out his discography. He played with some jazz drummers on some fusion albums that actually inspired Jeff Beck to do blow by blow matter of fact, Tommy’s last gig before he died, was opening for Jeff Beck in Miami. There’s a picture of them backstage with guitars sitting together.

It’s a shame, a guy that’s good looking like that and so talented that can sing and play the guitar and write music and lyrics has to die in his prime of 25 years old that just sucks and it’s happened way too many times there’s just no telling where some of these guys that died young would be right now. Think about that Tommy Bo and Randy Rhodes. The list goes on Jimi Hendrix

I think Phil Collins played drums on either teaser or this album and he had a lot of great players that he played with or played for

Deep Purple come taste the band from either 75 or 76 was the first album I bought with my own money when it came out I think it was 12 or 13 years old but Tommy Bolin I’ve been a big fan of his ever since he’s the reason, I played the guitar to think of the genres that he went through from 20 to 25 and five years. He did more work across the board from jazz to funk to rock to sort of heavy metal more so than any guitar player I can think of…. I wonder what he would be doing today

It’s certainly up there among Rush’s best tracks. I think I read in the Album by Album book on Rush, Martin Popoff said Cygnus x-1 just didn’t work. Yes it did and then to be followed by Hemispheres, fuck it worked, it worked amazingly.

Something I never really got about Alex's soloing until I was older was how unique it is. Usually when I hear a solo I personally put it into 1 of 2 categories. Noodling, or Structured. Noodling solos are solos that are very loose and chaotic, and they don't tend to impress me as often as structured solos, which I consider to be more melodic, and very tight on the timing. Alex somehow manages to sit perfectly on the line between them, which is something that I consider very rare in most of the music I hear.

I was thankfully able to see them 4 times! Wish I had seen them more... they are amazing!

RUSH is so incredibly TIGHT when they play live. It is amazing to me. They absolutely just NAIL it. I was so fortunate to have been able to see the 18 times in my life. Always the best show on Earth, ALWAYS! .. the ONLY glitch I had ever seen was at a concert back in the 80's, they used to open a lot of their shows with The Spirit of Radio, and as soon as Alex hit the first bend of his guitar solo in that song, his string broke. He was not pleased and threw his guitar to a stage hand while his guitar tech scrambled for a replacement. But even then, even when his solo got mucked up because of it, they didn't miss a beat. It was incredible. And Alex came back into the song absolutely PERFECTLY on the first note after what would have been the solo. I have never seen a band ever be able to do that so incredibly flawlessly like that. It was absolutely the least amount of disruption to the song that you could ever do. Jaw dropping!

What about Alex?

This is my favorite track on the album, barely beating out Middletown Dreams. And the live version from Cleveland on the Time Machine tour is the absolute pinnacle.

This is a song I loved from the beginning, for the first time I heard it. Now it's even better. I notice things I didn't before. Incredible. This and Marathon and Territories are amazing pieces of work from an unbelievable band.

so many of us kids learned to play in 7/8 before we learned how to count it.

Thought you were going to the end with Rush! What happened?

I had the privilege of seeing them 14 times. From 1976: All The Worlds A Stage tour to their last tour. Just a moving experience always. 🤩

This is kind of why I quit listening to radio music around 1991, there wasn't much that could top the 1980's progressive rock. This was one of my last vinyl albums that I ever purchased, and the clarity and silkiness was at the very top, then most record companies quit making any vinyl and moved to Compact CD only. Glad you did the reaction on this, I could see it in your eyes that you really enjoyed this one!
