That's the beauty of Rush. They're just good songs. I could never get into Dream Theater (although I love Portnoy with Richie Kotzen in Winery Dogs) because their music immediately sounds complicated just for the sake of being complicated. Whereas with Rush it's only later you realize they changed keys three times and went through 5 different time signatures.
Same

Exactly! Rush make accessible complicated music. That is NOT easy.
This album is one of the reasons why they are referred to as The Holy Trinity and The High Priests of Progressive Metal. Geddy Lee once stated that the solo on this track was one of the strangest that Alex ever played but was also a work of pure genius. I’m so happy you are enjoying your journey.
As I've made mention before be prepared to be taken to places you never knew existed 🤯 And with each listen you'll realize holy crap yot just got RUSHIFIED again 🤘💯🤘
This is probably my favorite guitar solo. Not just Alex, or Rush, but FAVORITE, period.
Alex rarely worked out solos
Beforehand, he just went for
It!! That’s what makes Alex so
Good because it was just off
The cuff… better late than
Never to be a member of the
Family!!😎
Rush odd times don't feel odd though! Solo all fire!
RUSH-is a genre all its own, and THAT was one of their goals/purposes when they started, whether they realized it or not. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎹
Producer: How many time signatures in this song?
Rush: All of them 😂
We’ll technically 5/4 and 4/4 for this one
@@elitedrumlessons6174 note to self: drummers don't understand humor 🙄
The big key to Alex's tone in this era is having a dirty amp blended with a crystal clean amp with chorus and delay. Also, the guitar he's using in this track is his early 80s 52 reissue Telecaster
First off, I'm not going to include you in these remarks because this is, I believe, the first time I have heard you use the term "genre" but I have to ask, why do so many people appear to need the ability to place an artist or band into a particular genre? The genre label is just another way to pigeonhole musicians and I don't understand what good comes from that. All genres, every pigeonhole, does nothing more than restrict an artist to a particular style. That focus on genre, once it gets into your album buying, puts YOU into a pigeonhole. You end up buying albums that are safely in your "comfort zone" (the decision made by the players, producers and/or engineers on prospective purchases). While you may avoid artists who you know will have a small chance of pleasing you, you are also depriving yourself of the thrill of discovery, of finding something new, of adding one more artist to your list of who to look for, who to collect.
The only place that genre may be of legitimate use is in the organisation of a music store but, even there, you can browse outside of your usual choices.
This has now gone on for much too long. Just be aware of your habits so that you don't become chained to them. 😎🇨🇦🇫🇮✌️
When this album came out in '84, I heard an interview where Alex said he tried a more chordal approach to GUP, like in the guitar solo in Kid Gloves.
One of my favorite Alex solos, too.
If ever there was A genre made for one band....
Prog Rock = Rush 👑
This is in Alex’s own top 3 solos
Great commentary. Thanks! You are spot on about Rush’s intricate synergy and “time signatures.” Alex is a uniquely talented and creative guitarist, one who is well-respected by top professional guitarist. He creates a unique richness of sound that is unpredictably perfect.
This solo is filthy!
Tim, I knew you would love that song! It's killer and Rush didn't play it live after the G/P tour. Damn good/great song, tho! But, in terms of "unexpected" music....dude...the NEXT song will take you on a freaking RIDE! You will be amazed at how weird and cool and crazy it is! Woo!!
This was the first album I ever purchased. Brings back a lot of good memories. Beginning to end just fantastic. The flow from song to song is incredible. Something we have lost in the digital age.
Love your reactions, and the part-two ,comments...Awesome as always...thanks, Todd from Ohio...
You have to do Power Windows !!!! I've been watching and waiting on your channel in this Rush journey so I can see you react to Power windows.... Don't give up now bro!!!!!!!
Everytime I watch a Rush reaction, and especially yours since you are walking through all of them, I say the same thing: "this is my favorite album." But this album, this is my favorite -- the tone and feel is just so positive and they are putting together so many different styles and techniques... Rush in the 80's are at the height of their powers.
I’m loving Power Windows right now but I love 80s Rush. None of those albums are bad for a much derided version of Rush.
Rush has a ton of waltzes but we never notice.
Great breakdown of a great song. Love to see your reaction to Alex’s solo on the Rio version of Dreamline.
Absolutely love this solo, but......the solo in Grand Designs has stuck with me for 30 plus years and its coming up on the next album. Hope you like it!
Dude if you love this tune THAT much (you're far from alone), you're gonna cream your BVDs for Between the Wheels.
Compare Kid Gloves to the Police's Spirits in the Material World -- Verses are off-kilter stumbling grooves where the message is about disconnection, and the choruses are straight ahead realizations that we're all connected by that disconnection.
It gets better. If you go to limelight just after the guitar solo, Alex and Geddy are in 3/4 WHILE Neil is in 4/4. How about 2 time signatures at the same freaking time?!?!
It's a buzz saw
That's Rush 😅🤘🤘🤘
This is one of their more underrated songs. Great lyrics, great musicianship and great melody. This album is iconic in the prog/rock canon!
❤👍🎶
