Great reaction and commentary!! I know this particular song, sounds completely different from what we expect from Rush...but as you go further into their catalog, then you'll see that it was kind of a "seed", for future musical expressions. Roll The Bones is where you'll see this song's influence. Look forward to seeing more Rush.

I never cared for this song until a few years ago. Every time I hear it I find myself pumping up the volume when it’s just the drums and the slap bass. I love when it drops down on this huge chords!

I just listen to the bass in the fade out. Compression and and a touch of chorus along with the best bass player on the planet.

It's a drum solo with irresponsibly funky music and Cold War lyrics. I like fun, and this is a fun song.

Yes, it was odd, but I still liked it for what it was. Only thing I missed was more Alex. The stuff that was really so odd to me was the Big Band kind of sounds.
Drumming changes always kept me interested in this song as much as Geddy's bass playing.
The outro funk and singing I loved too.
It's a yes song for me, but no surprise there.

I love this track, just for that begining groove that they start with & keeping bringing back, (I See Red).
I could have done without the other breaks in the song & just kept building on the I See Red groove. I do like the break that has the oriental sound.
But over all I really dig it.
    Keep going.

Team Yes for me, no bad songs from Rush. I just love some of their songs more than others. 😁

This song was amazing the times I saw them perform it live. I always liked it--even though it was definitely out of place on the album. The drums are captivating...and foreshadow some of Neil's musical excursions to come.

Beautiful piece of music. Not at all out of place, so cool. Little like Vital Signs. One of the coolest songs they've ever done.

I was a senior in high school when this album was released. Being that Rush only blessed us with 8 to 10 new songs every 12 to 18 months, every song was a gem to the cherished. Perspectives changed overtime about some songs or albums definitely, but the sheer joy of indulging in your favorite bands new music........wow. Something I was able to do through 2012's Clockwork Angel's album.

Looking at the comments I'm confused 😑 song is bult around a drum based solo - its is anything but a filler - I get there's alot of guitarist in the thread that ain't feeling cause no solo but maybe cause me as a drummer see this is a very complex arrangement that definitely fits with the them vibe of the CD 😎 Its an advanced keyboard composition complimented with an aggressive bass line that's part of Geddy's bass & keys musical journey - this song is classic Rush !!!

I love Red Lenses and i think Rush is just always playing 4D chess and is so far ahead that they know this album was different than anything else that this song does make sense in that context

The groove in the verse is really nice .. after that, it is disjointed and confusing. One of Rush's weirder tunes for sure.

  • @integraleric

I agree. It always seemed a bit out of place. The bridge to the chorus sounds a lot like The Human League's "Don't You Want Me, Baby?".

Red Lenses is better than Dog Years and Tai Shan, so I'm good with it. It was definitely a "filler" song where they indulged themselves. I wouldn't like the album as a whole any more than I do if it wasn't there.

It sounds to me like they had 2
    Separate Ideas for songs
    Fleshed out, then they decided
To throw them together into 1
    Song… They probably did that
    More than we realize!!

To keep it all in context bands like ACDC were outselling Rush so it really doesn't bode well for people's appreciation 4 Talent lyrics Superior arrangement talents of these 3 guys. And yes even the worst Rush song is far superior to most other bands best songs musically, they were never a band that would write good time songs about coming of age or getting lucky in the backseat. It wasn't everyone's music cuz people refuse to think

This was always my least favorite song on the album. However, how many other artist's best songs aren't as good as Rush's worst songs? Either way, this song quickly passed and Between The Wheels came on and made me forget about it. LOL

For me, the second side was always the weaker of the two. And this song contributed to my opinion on that. Good track, but FAR from my favourite. It doesn't have the 'hook, riff or easy meter to sing' like so many other better tracks. Hey, they can't all be winners!!
