In this episode, we race the two most powerful American production cars in history, the 1234-hp Lucid Air Sapphire and the 1025-hp Dodge Challenger SRT D170.
The first race takes place on regular asphalt, with our standard weather-corrected numbers. With the help of veteran drag racer, we achieve the quickest 0-60 and ¼-mile times ever seen from a Challenger. But is that enough to beat the Sapphire?
Either way, the Demon’s Mickey Thompson drag radials aren’t meant for an unprepped surface, so we leave Willow Springs and head to the Famoso Drag Strip to race on “glue” - the VHT-prepped surface.
Here, Tom Bailey’s experience launching the Challenger pays dividends as we try to recreate Dodge’s claimed 8.91-second quarter-mile run and dethrone the Lucid. Will it work?
Let’s fight about it.

An awd challenger demon would beat the lucid?
@@someonecalledeulogio2280 not without significantly more power. You have additional drivetrain loss with AWD and the Demon is already the underdog in the power department.
Yup I said that when Dodge first ran the 170 in public. No one is gonna be able to get that time that Dodge got in a 170. It's gonna take 170 attempts to do so. 😅
Already watched demonology spank a plaid .
To my knowledge, this is the only proper third-party test of the Dodge Demon on a drag strip - hat's off Jason & co for making this happen!! Also, makes the 8.9s Dodge claim *really* hard to believe. RWD is hard!
I think the question now becomes: Is a Lucid Air Sapphire towing a Dodge Demon faster in the quarter mile than a Dodge Demon?
Dodge's 8.9 claim was with a single seat spec car, which the one in this video wasn't, and with MUCH better density altitude and track prep. You know as well as anyone that DA can make or break an ICE car and not all "track prep" is equal. You could tell it still wasn't hooking by the in-car shots showing intense wheel hop and it wasn't pulling the wheels up anywhere near as high or as far as what a lot of the other ones do. I've seen stock ones almost trip the 60ft timers with the back tires. It takes very low DA and excellent track prep on the factory tires or going up a size in the rear to get a D170 to dead hook. There are privately owned stock D170s running in the 8.8-9.2 range either on the factory rubber or with a wheel/tire swap. With all that said, Tom Bailey is a phenomenal driver and the Lucid is an incredible car, no doubt about either of those.
@@kkellywv ^^ This. It's all about the DA, which doesn't give any advantage to an EV. I've not found where/what track the 8.91 time was set, but I guarantee it wasn't California in the summer. More likely Detroit in the fall.
they post 8,9 because they excluded the rollout time. and RWD with less horsepower and torque will always lose to AWD with more horsepower and instant torque.
@@upshifter5316 I have a picture of the actual slip. It was South Georgia Motorsports Park December 2nd 2022 at 10:12am. 1.24 60ft, 8.912 @ 151.17. They did a LOT of testing over a long time at multiple locations and that particular day at SGMP yielded the published run.
The 170 in its name refers to how many runs needed to achieve the advertised 8.9 second 1/4 mile time
way way more than 170
They call it the Demon because it can only perforrm these numbers in your dreams, not real life.
Might wanna watch demonology. He gets those times, all the time. U people clearly dont know what a driver mod is. He beat the plaid 3 out of 3 times. Yet this guy best time was a 10.1 😂😂 yea OK.
Not a single street legal Demon 170 exists that does under 9 seconds quarter mile. That is simply not possible on street legal tires, not that the Demon would do it with pre-heated drag tires on superglued tarmac either. I doubt it
If you want sub 9 seconds 1/4 mile times on street legal tires you need a rocket engine.
@@G82Wattsyall always come with these bullshit excuses 😂 the man driving in this video is a professional drag racer as well. Dodges suck at launching, and they're especially worthless on a non prepped surface. The fact still remains that anyone can get a lucid to run 9.0, you need a favor from the gods to get your demon to do it, though.
What people fail to mention is that the Lucid doesn't even have drag tires or a parachute.

Same here. At least i now know why it used to be a thing, before accurate timing. Total b.ll..ks nowadays
It’s why offset exists in drag cars. Effectively you can cheat the timing a little by having one wheel a couple of inches further forward than the other.

Increased DA does in fact give the advantage to the EV. The higher the DA the more slippery the car is (less resistance). This is why EVs click off the best times up in the tracks much “higher up”.
Track prep want good enough or he wasn’t on e85. No reason a demon 170 would be that slow when they run low 9’a routinely in every other video
@@Freddy_Confettidudes leaving on footbrake or something even on pump gas that car should've never seen a 10 unless he's like 5000+ feet up
The editing is what really elevates these videos; while the automobiles are interesting, the way they were put together is flawless.
The best edumacation and entertainment comes from Jason Cammisa. What a pearler of an episode.
keep on mind that every track is different (temprature, air quality, and so on) so the car needs to be tune for that track because it was not hoocking properly. nice video

I knew the EV would beat ICE but I didn’t know what rollout was. Now I do. Thanks!
If I could base my purchase of a vehicle solely on this video, the Lucid got it in the first 2 seconds of the first race. That launch was crazy!
Editing/Capture/Production is so good on these vids.
I just gada say.... the way this video is put together is beautiful!! The spokesman is able to walk next to Tom Bailey as he is going 120mph, which is brilliant and very entertaining! I couldn't stop watching this video even if I wanted to!! My hats are off to the entire crew who put this video together! BROVO!!
This is just CRAZY-- unreal
Again reminder that this is a full sized family sedan that is crushing this purpose-built drag car.
@@ElectricGlider2016 one other thing to remember is it is limited heavily purpose built. There are people running 7’s at 170-180 mph in Hellcats that don’t have to meet California emissions standards. These are Hellcats with good enough manners to drive to work everyday. It can be done. Lots of boost and good fuel. Less restriction. It will never be possible to get the full potential and remain 50 state legal. I’m glad I live in a state that doesn’t test for any of that.
@@ElectricGlider2016 yeah I love dodge challengers and they are one of my favorite cars but they need so much prep and arnt as good as people say they are. But they are still really good
Reminder that it’s literally an electric car awd and the demon needs more prep
@@davidbaker2778 Your glad to be all in pollution and life killing warming? Wow.
@@davidbaker2778 Is there a tire company that makes a tire I don't know about that can handle 1000hp 7 second runs and drive to work everyday? Or has it become a norm to go run 7 second at the 1/4 and then change wheels and tires , adjust suspension and upload a different tune ? You seriously cant argue that a 7 second hellcat is even a decent daily driver. Whereas the sapphire is a true street , everyday car that also happens to basically obliterate anything on wheels. I'm all about sleepers and functional race cars but that is nonsense. I don't even like electric cars but nobody can deny sapphire is the ultimate daily to serve gapplebe's.
The videos you roll out are just so high quality and your explanation of how the drag race lighting system or laser system works was very educational. Very high quality content.
Quite frankly, i love the presentation on this, the humor is great and the theatrics are on point! Now that the praises are out of the way, lets get down to facts. A fuel burning engine can NEVER beat an electric engine on equal ground because simply put, the fuel burning engine needs to rev to produce torque, but the electric engine can and will produce all the torque you want from a standstill if you give it 100% of the battery power it requires to do so. In this case, the fact that the electric powered car had 4wd and the fuel engine car had only rwd biases the results even more and gave the clear win to the Lucid even before anything started. That being said, don't get me wrong... I still have my hair standing upright hearing that supercharger whine from the Dodge while the lucid impresses me but makes me yawn... I'll still take the smiles per gallon any day over the 3 quarter miles worth and you have to wait 4 hours to get back home. On top of that just for good measure, i still prefer the smell of race gas compared to heated electronics any day also, but that might be just me. A car or any vehicle is always about the driver and the experience, nobody actually gives a fudgesicle about the numbers unless they are buying a car for just... well, the numbers in their wallet. The real enthusiasts buy a car for the pleasure of driving and owning it, not for ink on paper and nothing else. Feel free to disagree with me, but i stand my ground and won't budge an inch no matter what you say. These things can't be quantified with just numbers and are a "user experience" type of deal no matter how people get heated about not wanting to have an open mind on things they don't like.
My favorite part of 1/8+ drag racing... "It's just water on the tires"... They always get someone sucking on it...
does dodge have evidence of that 8.9? I think we'd all like to see it
Fake evidence.. It can do 8.9 with modified 1500+ whp
To be fair, this was in Famosa. Famosa is known for it's terrible DA. I have a friend that goes there, he lives in Bakersfield. It's 600+ feet above sea level and the average DA of over 3000ft most of the time. Just for reference, you can search DA online and on 7/10/2024 at 4pm, Famosa had a DA of 4400ft about sea level. General rule is, for every 1000ft, a car loses 3% of it's power. To hit that 9.7 time, it was probably late in the evening when the DA dropped a little bit.

I'm very impressed with how you all put this video together and by having a true drag and drive legend like Tom Bailey as part of it. I don't think he would've been involved unless he thought things were being done right.
Get somebody like Herman over on the demonology channel that can drive the 170. Would be really interesting then.
Like the cars or not, that's pretty impressive that both cars survived all of that abuse on a sticky surface and didn't break. I'm pretty sure a lot of other production cars would have blown something up in the same conditions.

That lucid is obnoxiously fast. Pair that with its near prodigious handling system (cammisa goes more in depth about that department in a carmudgeon show episode where he calls it the best handling car ever) and you get a car I desperately want.
He didn't say it was the best handling car, but it was an EV that responded to driver inputs flawlessly. His description of the Lucid Air Sapphire is the car was able to do exactly what he wanted to do to the point it felt like the car was reading his mind. This does not mean it can outdo a 911 GT3RS, but it does mean it's an amazing driver's car
@@user-tt6wm2pu6z He says it's the best handling sedan, and says it may be the best-handling car outright. These are the opening words of his IG review: "Verdict Lucid Air Sapphire: the best-handling sedan in the history of the world. Or maybe the best-handling car, period. I've had three days to try to think of anything better, and I can't." @@mobiusflammel9372 Has he driven the new Taycan Turbo S though? Somehow I doubt the Lucid is better handling than a Porsche that smashed the previous EV Nurburgring record while having less power than the Plaid.
