@@paulblack9878 Same, exactly. Even with the turbo, I think Mazda is trying to make it more a budget luxury car than a hot hatch unfortunately. I do think its interior beats every other car here, and exterior every car but the mustang. (Although I am very biased)
@octogintillion ya, the interior and a few other things are probably better. It's more sport luxory than sport. Gotta make tradeoffs to keep it in that price range. They probably decided they couldn't compete with a really cheap/reliable car like the corolla and couldn't make it sportier than say a mustang so their trying to create their own sport luxory at a lower price. Even if its not super fast like it. Has a bit of everything for 33k, fancy, fast and reliable.
@@octogintillion They absolutely are. I love Mazda but their brand direction is caught in a weird duality of trying to have the best driving vehicle in each segment but also not committing to making a performance car apart from the Miata, and defining a Miata as that is a bit of a stretch.
@@lectorj gentle pushback, the starting point of both Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla are within $1,500 of each other MSRP, with the Mazdas naturally aspirated 2.5 making a good bunch more power than Corolla. It's just their range includes another half step up performance wise with the turbo model. Just not a full step to the gr Corolla/ Honda Civic type r/wrx. But like was covered, I do enjoy my interior when I'm stuck in traffic, And it's not like you can go 95 mph through the twisty mountain roads around me anyway. The problem is I don't have the discipline to walk into a Ford dealer and say "yes, I want the 4 banger with the base interior." I'm leaving with a 5.0, stupidly bloated interior and a staggering monthly payment for the next 72 months.
This edit was INSANE guys …. hopping out of the Elantra N while still in a drag race was just max flex mode by your editors. Great work as always Hagerty! Now put the RCF up against that Mustang, I’d love to see that matchup.
Jason is the reason I bought a GR86, and I absolutely love it. Really hope you got DTS some seat time in that car, I can't believe he hasn't driven one!
I'll take the GR86 just like Jason. Pure driving experience, no turbos, no automatic, FR layout, attainable lightweight sports car, what more do you want.
I test drove it. It is great but needs a touch more power. Even if it just had variable valve timing for a different cam setup it would have made a difference. I couldn't drop my hard earned cash for an engine so boring. A turbo would be perfect.
agreed... in reality most guys will not launch their cars like that many times throughout ownership. having the best balanced car will give more smiles per mile
@@calvinallan2208 the funny part is the stang wouldn't hang if it didn't have the highest power rating, 10-speed auto and the upgraded tire package. All that, yet the mustang would be called a "Sports car." Hyundai is just really making some waves since the Japanese counterparts sort of gave up on fun and affordable cars.
Crazy how the Mini was quirky and fun in the 2000s and now it's become boring and bloated. Just look at it next to these cars at 1:19, it's anything but miniature.
10:36 - The Mazda 3 appears to not be in sport mode - and yes it actually makes a pretty significant difference in this car. The shift points are much more aggressive and it stays in the powerband a lot better. Could probably cut a few tenths of a second if it was in the right mode. in some other drag races here on RUclips, the 3 Turbo sometimes beats the WRX and Golf R in the right conditions. It's just harder to unlock the potential because of all the tech and a relatively clumsy old transmission standing in the way.
That is what I thought too. I've seen several reviews of the Mazda 3 where the reviewer apparently didn't know about sport mode and complained that it felt sluggish. I almost yell at the screen "turn on sport mode!". I wasn't expecting it to do super well, but the torque and AWD should have given it a better start off the line.
@@tellyawhatmate it is a soft box, but that's a good thing. Not for the driving enthusiast but for the daily driver. The Mazda3 is actually pretty excellent at everything except the track stuff and it's one of the best non-ZF gearboxes out there. They drive really well and still give some feedback despite having really softened up for this current generation. That said, I really do wish they had a more 'pure' spec of the 3, with a manual mated to their turbo and AWD driveline.
The times are set after several instrumented tries, before the shots for camera are recorded. Don't trust what you see on the screen to be the exact way they got the times. I'm sure they put every car in the best possible mode. The times they got here are better than advertised by Mazda, and consistent with other publications; even when other testers got slightly better times, it wouldn't have changed the placement in the leaderboard here.
I traded in my ‘21 Mazda 3 Turbo hatch just over a week ago for a ‘24 CT4 V Blackwing. The 3 was a great daily hatch, and given this line up and results, I’d still pick it again. It was the best mix of good enough performance with the closest to luxury interior in the segment. It’s only let down was the transmission, it’s geared to be smoother and give the illusion of a larger engine, so it’s not very sporty despite its engine’s numbers. If Mazda had a manual that could handle the torque, it would completely change the demeanor of the car.
A tune CHANGES THE ENTIRETY of these cars. It's unfortunate they use the SUV transmission shifting points but good fuel and a tune have shown consistently 50+ WHP gains. That car is a true sleeper with a proper adjustment
@@fakenews4734I agree, but all of these cars make mad power with a tune, the gti will make 370-400whp with a e85 tune and no hardware, and will beat a brand new 5.0. Elantra N similar deal and wrx, I can’t speak for the ford though.
@@markcoopers1930 Yeah they aren’t cheap (the car or house). I do miss the 360 camera of the Mazda 3, I’m worried I’m going to beat up the carbon fiber on this. The 3 is optioned so well, you’ve got a great car until you find a Blackwing for yourself.
What a fun group of cars!! Love them all. I am happy to see the oft-forgotten Mini Cooper S show up and hold its own, even if it is happiest on a twisty road, and it was honestly quicker than I expected. However, I am sad to see that it weighs 300+ lbs more than my 2013. I'll be hanging onto my car and its 6-speed manual transmission for as long as I can, but I am glad to see a fun and relatively affordable group of cars tested here (including some other cars that offer a choice of transmission!). Great video, love the humor as always.
It's also the only one that can do heavy duty tracking out of the factory. It's really a circuit built car which doesn't exist in America no more. This is why Hyundai is so successful overseas with the N series.
The Elantra N is a beast, but it's hard to deny how absurd the EcoBoost is. The loss of the manual in a RWD turbo coupe is sad, but I can't imagine they were making that many sales. The GR86 is always my personal favorite, though. From what I've seen, they're actually a bit underrated in power on paper. 213~ whp average of nearly 40 cars dyno'd with 15% drivetrain loss points to ~250hp crank. Seeing it struggle to match the turbo torque on launch but catch up as it gets rolling makes sense in that case. I'm glad to see naturally aspirated cars keep up with their turbo counterparts. Makes me wish we could've seen the miata in here as well, as they supposedly get pretty similar times to 60 and the quarter mile. Great video as always!
I bet if it had stickier tires, it would have been much closer too. That wheelspin killed it in the launch considering how much lighter it is than the other cars.
Miata would have taken last place but yes they should have put it in here. Edit: Sorry, the Mazda 3 T would have taken last place still given it's issues this day.
@@bearclaw5115 It certainly would have, but would be fun to include it anyway, just to see where it stands. It would have beaten the hypothetical Civic Si that they excluded, but not by a ton.
the elantra N launches pretty poorly stock, its a FWD car vs the RWD EcoBoost, it wheel hops REALLY bad. Swap in stiffer engine mount bushings and you can shave a whole 1 sec on your 0-60, completely removing all wheel hop. Id like to see the comparison vs the EcoBoost then. But at that point its a modified car and you could argue if its a fair comparison or not (speaking from experience as an Elantra N owner, the stiffer bushings where the single best modification I've done to the car, vastly increases engine response and removes all wheel hop, and shaved 1 second off my tested 0-60)
I drive a 21 Mazda 3 turbo awd premium plus. It may not be the fastest in this bunch, but it's quick enough for me. What really sold me was the leather interior, the HUD, the killer sound system, the heated power seats, the soft touch materials everywhere, etc, etc, etc. The cabin is just one sweet-ass place to spend my commute or a long road trip. Anywho, I really like mine.
For the better part of a decade Mazda has been my go to default for suggesting a new car to people. Not the bargain of a Hyundai or the power house in any measure but the interiors are genuinely nice and compared to anyone they are trying the hardest to make a good car.
@@syaieya You nailed it with those two brands. Hyundai's N line, especially the Elantra, has a stranglehold on affordable performance. But Mazda has its own ideas of what a 'great car' is, and they try their best to produce it. @JoshuaTootell I remember back in the day lotta guys switching out their manuals for automatics with B&M quick shifters. But it was mostly about the street speed and not the driving experience. In lots of daily traffic a manual can get a bit tiring depending on the vehicle but is much more engaging on open roads and one lane hill country.

That’s why the only Mustang I have from the G6 family is the EB PP I bought 4/15. I sold to my son to buy a GT PP, then a GT350 and then a GT500 CFTP. I sold them all and then bought back the EB PP and have made it a dedicated track car. Overachiever motor and yes the best handling since it has the least weight over the front tires. Wider wheels/tires, larger intercooler, and added an engine oil cooler as heat mitigation is inadequate for track use otherwise. Not as fast as the 5.0s on the straights, however under braking and cornering… ❤
I used to own a 2016 EB mustang. My best time with the 6R80 , not a PP but with grippy tires /93 octn, 0-60: 5.5 sec , 1/4 mi 13.9 sec at 100.4 mph. Now it is a full second quicker to 60 mph, and a bit over 1/2 sec quicker to the 1/4 mi. Best Ive seen the new EB trap is 103 mph. What an improvement!!
@M4B21S88 'how about the people that own the MT versions of these cars and want to see how they compare, say to a Mustang? etc...' For some reason your reply to me doesn't show up in the comments. My point wasn't an apples to apples comparison, it's that they arbitrarily apply standards/rules at whim, and then ignore them in the next breath. If a car only has an auto tranny, bring it. I never said rule out the Mustang or any other car because they only make an auto version. I said if a car has both transmissions available (and they have access to both) bring them both. Remove the doubt in the audiences mind.
The fact that despite the Elantra N coming in second it was traveling 3 miles faster than the Stang is bananas! Imagine if there was a roll race between the 2?
Weight is weight. Thing is though that 3mph advantage might get smaller when you remove the wheel hoppy launch. This happens alot in drag races where the car that spins up on launch winds up with a higher trap speed and slower ET. They will be close though.(obviously)

It definitely is. Also, Mazda is probably not completely truthful with the whole more power with premium fuel.
And if you care about things like blind spot monitoring Mazda has more of those standard than Toyota.

9:31 The WRX launch is a crime against clutchmanity got me😂😂
10:36 - The Mazda 3 appears to not be in sport mode - and yes it actually makes a pretty significant difference in this car. The shift points are much more aggressive and it stays in the powerband a lot better. Could probably cut a few tenths of a second if it was in the right mode. in some other drag races here on RUclips, the 3 Turbo sometimes beats the WRX and Golf R in the right conditions. It's just harder to unlock the potential because of all the tech and a relatively clumsy old transmission standing in the way.
huge oversight on their end
That is what I thought too. I've seen several reviews of the Mazda 3 where the reviewer apparently didn't know about sport mode and complained that it felt sluggish. I almost yell at the screen "turn on sport mode!". I wasn't expecting it to do super well, but the torque and AWD should have given it a better start off the line.
@@krudmuphinstudioz the gearbox lets it down. Its soft
I too have been eyeing the ct4 BW as an eventual replacement for my mazda3 turbo.
But house prices don't seem to be coming down....

@@raydoherty5419 funny that the engine in the mustang is "most likely" the mazdaspeed turbo engine that they aquired the rights for.
@ I get wanting the noise of the V8 but this is a very quick car.
@@jonander111it is not related tot hat engine at all. Like please do some quick googling it’s not hard to answer questions these days instead of just say passion blurbs lol

Robert Sanders... you are the man! Amazing work!
It's crazy that a Type R isn't on this list. Shows how crazy the market has gone.
@@MrLense the worst part is Honda's build quality doesn't match its price range, absolutely crazy times we live in
Elantra n is basically 95% of a type R for much less money.
The FL5 is like over 50k CAD and about 55k here in Europe. Absolutely insane.
It also amazes me that WRX is not far behind Type R even tho it's not a STi or as powerful as the last gen JDM spec (WRX VAG JDM spec has 296 hp and 400 Nm of torque), please Subaru, please release WRX STi for the VB generation
That type r is 50k😭
Awesome video, Power to the people's cars😂❤.
Jason you nailed it with this one, for me Hyundai N is still the hero ❤❤❤
Excellent production quality as usual, and Jason is always fun to watch. I wasn't surprised by the Mazda, I knew the only-adequate 6-speed auto would doom it before a wheel turned.
The production quality is amazing
Hyundai Elantra N would win the roll from 30 mph on up
The Hyundai lost, end of story. Had it been the Mustang GT, the Hyundai wouldn't know which way the Mustang went 😂😂😂
@BruceKent00 The Hyundai would walk the Mustang from any roll speed end of story, and the Mustang lost because it is over $35k so it's disqualified.
@TxChristopher the video is about the quarter mile, the Mustang won, the Hyundai went home crying along with all its fangirls like you.
@@TxChristopherto be fair, hardly any of these cars can be bought for under 35k. (Maybe the mazda3 only).
I guess the benefit of the mustang here is that it’s American built, a more common car vs the others (supply vs demand), thus maybe youll get more incentives from Ford dealers to sell.
You can't get any of these cars in Germany for that price. Not even the Golf. Reimported GTIs are cheaper
How is that possible? Are they build in us or something
Im sorry but that is dumb. It shouldn't be cheaper to get a car made in Germany for less when it has to be brought back into the country.
check the prices for GR86 in the Netherlands... Last time I've checked official price was 65k+ eur
@@Mc_Whitty Taxes? In france, because of the "high" CO2 emissions, GR86 would endure a 55000$ tax (you read it right). Of course it's not sold anymore. Stupid politicians.
Check the power on it and the quallity it is not the same...Vw always makes better home cars then around them Ive bought from Austria the doors inside had so much airbags but where the same packet as mine home..I would say thats it ..why you dont have an R model 310 hp and In Europe has it i talk about mk7 model!
Jason is just the best journalist
I think the elantra N is filling the gap of mitsubishi evo. miss the evo
I honestly hadn't thought about it that way, but it kinda is. If they offered the N in AWD, boy, that would be quite a package.
100% i missed on the Evo back in 2009 and got an e92 and when i saw the Elantra and heard it knew that i wont be making this mistake so i bought it two weeks back and really impressed. Corolla/Yaris are of GTIs and Golf R
Currently own an evo 8 and a 2025 gr corolla. They are kin to each other virtually in every way. The gr corolla is a true evo successor with it being one of the most raw cars out of the box. Wrx has become way too neutered since 15 MY
Yeah, no. Very different breeds. The GRolla is closest to a modern Evo.
@@acerimmer8338 agreed.
9:28 I know Jason cringed when he heard himself say “clutchmanity” 😂
I believe the Miata is very close to the BRZ/GR86.
@davepaturno4290 They should have had a MX5 here too.
@autochatter Agreed
The Miata with LSD is $5k+ more than GR86 which puts it over $35k
I loooove you sound tests, you let us hear not only the engine but the starting motor, this is sublime, love your channel
Wow that Ecoboost is quick. And for a few bucks more you can have a Mustang GT. Very impressed with the Ford.
by "a few more bucks" you mean $10,000?
@@yimpyoi9808 right!! Its no longer a “few grand” more.
Or Buy used V8 for same price..
@@xninja2369 exactly. for $30k you can get tons of used v8 cars that will probably have more power than a new mustang gt and actually be able to put it down.
@@yimpyoi9808 But you need to super careful , specially with V8 ,you need to check engine , head gasket , look for oil leakage , brake & suspension &, worn out tires see previous repair record and so on..
Because they could be used rough you don't wanna get in problem later ..
Me personally I would rather buy used Honda / Miata for daily + Hellcat / corvette for fun .
( If I could buy sadly non of these car brands are available in my country 😭 and import tax is 125%)
Hagerty better hold on to Jason Camisa for dear life because he is the only thing keeping this brand relevant
Where is the only sportcar I would buy for under 35k ? Miata !
It’s in my garage! I daily a 2024 ND3 Miata Club and it was an easy choice for me! I am looking hard at the Mazda3 as a replacement for my wife’s 2012 Honda Accord, which is and has been an amazing car!
I'm always looking forward to a video with Jason. He just gets it to the point and never fails to make me laugh. Plus, he always has Randy in as well. What a legend and yet another nice guy.
14:25 - Elantra N would definitely give the mustang a run for its money with a dct
Yea, and give that Ford ecoboost a little tune and the results are the same. Ford built a awesome affordable Mustang that's for sure
@@G_WOLF the Elantra N also either had regular gas in it or wasn’t “octane learned”. It only showed 15 psi turbo on both tests and that car can do 20 with 91/93 gas.
"...heading out in search of new head gaskets" ☠️😂☠️
Crazy an ecoboost mustang is as fast as a mid 2000s super car
Absolutely love what Hyundai’s been doing since 2018-19 with the introduction of the N Series.
Never thought I’d ever become a fan of Hyundai but after almost a year of owning one…. Here I am!
Let's go Hyundai!! Proud owner of an i30 Fastback N line here. No I don't wanna feed a full blown N model
You should, the N is a blast
@Droolboy Elantra N is surprisingly economical at 60mph highway speeds (36mpg) only does 31mpg at 85mph highway though.
LOL that fart sound when shoving Randy back into the mustang 11:25
The Mazda was not even on my radar until now. That's a properly understated car, I'm sure with a downpipe, intercooler and tune it would be an absolute riot.
Just so you know, lot of people here in the comments mention less-than-optimal gear ratios for a could-be hothatch. Kinda sad to see it being held back by the transmission. I also like the looks of that car, tho. This exact white + black sometimes parks next to my GTI, when the neighbour finds that spot free 🙂.
BTW, chiptuned GTI with proper traction control setting is a whole 'nother beast than what we had here. Emissions compliance hits that car hard.
@Nikko780 ThrottleHouse did a drag race with the mazda3 and they couldn't get consistent results with it. Every other race the ecu would pull timing for some reason or another. I'm wary.
Reminded me of the old 80s Car and Driver issues I used to consume when I was growing up. Loved this!
He can definitely convert car fans into car AC's ... beautifully put together piece of art
Air conditioners? anti christ? alternating currents?

The price of a new GTI in Germany is $51,000. 1:58
Whoaaa u r getting scammed by ur own country company thinking innocent German will buy it thinking they are patriot 😱.same reason why jeeps and ford are so expensive nowadays nearly over 100 k for a rubicon😂and they wonder why their cars sits on lot for 700 +days. We ain't fool.

$100 000 в России. Трехлетний с пробегом из Кореи 🌚
My local US dealer had them listed in the mid 40s
Jason, you're one of the best! Love the way you guys present everything. Keep them coming !
I think if you make a this well put together, edited and overall enjoyable show, then it shouldn't be a big hassle to convert the units to metric (like the weight of the vehicle). I know that americans tend to think that there is no one else on this planet than them but still, majority uses metric system.
I wish they would have had DCT and DSG cars too and also done roll races.
Yep. I don't want the 'what if' situation.
The title is fastest cars you can get for $35,000. Several of them don't have a manual available and yet they are here. Bring manual, auto and DCT versions of cars that have them available.
If you can also get a Miata under $35K it should have been here too.
@@lazarushernandez5827Miata has 0 straight line speed but is a wonderful car that I’m sure they didn’t want to embarrass that way and skew the message of the Miata.
@@LafemmebearMusic I get that, but in the same vein Jason is going off on the manual transmission. The GR86 has a similar mission as the Miata, yet it's here.
