If you like “jazzy” style rock then you’ve come to the right place. Steely Dan is so unique, they are just in a league of their own and you won’t find a bad song by them. They never phoned it in, ultimate studio perfectionists.

Steely Dan has so many different sounds. Probably the best production of all time in the later albums as well. They hired legendary session musicians and only released the cream. Possibly the most sampled band as well.

I was 20 when this album came out and I thought this jazzy rock was the coolest thing I’d ever heard. Little did I know everything by Steely Dan was going to be the coolest thing I ever heard.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are two perfectionist’s and have created some of the finest recorded music you will ever hear! Takes them months to make an album, not days or weeks! They might go through several session guitarists to play a particular solo until they get their approval, that goes for drummers, horns, backup singers, etc.

Steely Dan is a rabbit hole that would amaze Alice. This song is about addiction and addictive behaviors, and how we as humans find comfort in them, even if those behaviors are negative ones. All SD songs should be reacted to with a lyric video. SD is smart, funny, ironic, adult and occasionally obscure and complex. Also, every song is played at a high level. Try "Black Cow" next, then "Peg", "Kid Charlemagne", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", the entire "Aja" album, "Hey Nineteen", "The Fez", "Green Earrings", "Reelin' In The Years", "Babylon Sisters", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Don't Take Me Alive", "My Old School", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", and "Doctor Wu". There are many more because there's really no band SD song.

Steely Dan and Pink Floyd are two of my favorite bands from when I was in college. Thanks for playing them. Here's something I don't think I've seen any other reactors do.... from the band that was second only to the Beatles in US record sales, I think. They were among the first to integrate brass with rock, and were probably the most successful. They also had one of the best early lead guitarists of that time, though he died young and many don't know him now; Terry Kath.
Search YT for chicago 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood 1970..... you won't be disappointed.

Oh pleeeaaassssseee pretty please . You will have your sensory level want more and more. Chicago was my 2nd favorite band of the 60s 70s growing up. I loved the brass as a teen. Never heard this sound from "rock" band. I really didn't consider them rock. You will understand when you listen to their rabbit hole. Terry kath on guitar and the others. One of a kind., hurry hurry and do it!!!

Rock and jazz fused together was/is called Fusion. It started in the late 60's with the short lived band Sweetwater.
Sweetwater was the first band to play at Woodstock. Unfortunately they broke up because the lead singer, Nancy, was in a car accident in. Glendale CA, where she and the band is from. She was hit by a drunk driver and ended up in coma and incubated. The incubator affected her voice box so she couldn't speak more than whisper. It took her years to speak normally and eventually sing again. I saw Sweetwater in 2000. It was wonderful.

Like Pink Floyd, Steely Dan have lots of really good music!..."Do It Again" was their first, of a dozen radio hits, and a hundred deep cuts, like..."Dirty Work"..."Bodhisattva"..."Night By Night"..."Black Friday"..."Kid Charlemegne"..."Black Cow"..."Peg"..."Deacon Blue"..."FM"..."Hey, Nineteen"...and quite a few more...

If you love music that is well composed, played by excellent musicians and almost mind-expanding, then immerse yourself in the YES universe.
For newcomers, I recommend the album Fragile (1971) and the track Roudabout. The composition of the band has been very changeable over the decades, one of the members should always be there in one piece, namely lead singer Jon Anderson.
    Have fun discovering

another deep rabbit hole to go down with Steely Dan. Excellent stuff...excellent musicianship, great production and writing. almost always 'jazzy'....almost. so many things to check out but if i were to have to pick a couple....'AJA"...that is mindblowingly good...... and 'Kid Charlamaign' ...that one is about the 'mad chemist' and sound guy and benefactor for the gratefule dead . Owsley Stanley. Owsley produced a large portion of the acid that was going around in the 60's and was apparently QUITE good at it ...;O). anyway....great song and a RIDICULOUS bass line...

Rock, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Reggae, Middle Eastern Vibes, Asian Vibes, what have I left off? These two guys were born to bring these amazing tunes to fruition and with some of the greatest musicians and backing vocalists of the time. Check out how the music frequently belies the lyrics, often dark and moody. You'll find yourself groovin' and dancing to a tune about drug addiction (Kid Charlemagne) and asking yourself, "Is this f'in song about a post apocalyptical future ( King of the World)?" Happy Steely trails!

So doing this tune is exactly what I like, PRE-AJA Steely Dan, in other words, Rock Music, not that yuppie turd known as AJA. Nice review of one of my FAVE SD songs.
