Steely Dan's history is very interesting, it was started by Becker and Fagen during college, it became a band, then it just became the original two plus amazing studio artists. There are a lot interesting characters and details to their transformations, definitely worth reading about. This album came out when I was in High School, and I particularly liked the Latin rhythm of this song back then. I still love it 50 years later.

It’s amazing that back in the early 70’s you could have a single with over a minute intro before the first verse even starts, PLUS extended guitar and keyboard solos. That would NEVER happen in today’s rigid radio formats. There’s almost a slight stylistic homage to The Doors here, but tighter and more sophisticated. I’m sure Jim Morrison would’ve dug Steely Dan.

Harri on your musical journey your going to find that Steely Dan is the most sampled band you’ll hear, but if you go deep into the Steely Dan rabbit hole you’ll forever be hooked on them, listen to Black Cow next and take from there , you’ll never be the same! Be Safe and be well

The guy with the curly red hair isn't singing the lead. He was only with them for a while. This was the album audio combined with footage from a TV appearance. The solo you hear is on a Coral Electric Sitar, and not the guitar they are showing. There is a short history of the band called "Steely Dan : More Than Just A Band " on Y.Tube., and an even better one about the recording of the Aja album, which goes into the history of the band, and dissects songs using the original multitrack tapes. They started as a band, and progressed to a duo with top notch studio musicians. The group was named after a dildo in the William Burroughs novel Naked Lunch.

Hi Harri.....Helene here: Steeley Dan is often described as a fusion of rock, jazz and funk. It’s a really “sophisticated” sound......What you’d want for the soundtrack for a fancy cocktail party. This song if off of their first album, Can’t Buy a Thrill, which was released in 1972. Their sound was unique and different from everything else out there at that time. These days, it’s often placed in the sub-genre of “yacht rock”. Sounds kinda dissing, like they’re calling it “soft rock”, but I think, again, they mean it’s sophisticated and SMOOTH....This is a wonderful rabbit hole, Harri......if you dig this vibe, then you’re in for a treat. There are so many great songs and several wonderful albums...especially AJA and Can’t Buy a Thrill.

Steely Dan is Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, two musical geniuses who hired every top musician in the world to play for them. They are known for Production Perfection.
They do sarcastic social statements and make references to historical events. They are unique unto themselves, and have a wide range of Great Songs. All of AJA, all of The Royal Scam
Steely Dan is a Chrome Dildo, referenced from the book Naked Lunch. Listen to "The Fez" you will Love It.

It's worth mentioning that the guy playing the conga (bongo?) drums, (in the video), is Skunk Baxter... a very accomplished guitarist probably more well known for his work with the Doobie Bros but certainly a big part of early Steely Dan. I think he played guitar on the studio version of this song... not percussion. It's possible he did both.

Oh by the way... Michael McDonald from The Doobie Brothers is often found on backing vocals too!

This group, Steely Dan, is a deep well of tasty stuff. You won't be the same.
This video does not belong with this particular recording. The recording you played is the original "studio" recorded version with Donald Fagan singing lead, from the album. The vid is from a live concert in '73 with David Palmer singing lead. He left the group in 1974-ish.

The Do It Again/Billie Jean medley was by a studio group called Club House. I thought it was pretty cool at the time. There was another version by another group that was popular in other parts of the world, but in my neck of the woods the Club House version was the one that was popular.

Interesting. The video does not match the audio. This the studio version of the song. The video was a very early live performance. The singer in the video is David Palmer, who was only with the band on the first album. They weren’t sure about Donald Fagen as the vocalist. But people loved his sound, so Palmer went away.
