They have a slightly different style of singing, but no doubt there is a quality to Phil's voice that is very much like Peter's. I wonder if it is a coincidence, or something that rubbed off onto Phil somehow. However, I can't quite imagine Phil doing Peter's bizarre, rambling agricultural poetry at the start of "I can't dance".

The level of effort that went into creating the Sledgehammer video was beyond insane.
No CGI. No compositing. No AfterEffects. No computers.
Everything painstakingly created in-camera using stop-motion, with Peter Gabriel making small adjustments to his facial expressions and body poses for each snap of the camera under studio lights. Sittingstill while a makeup artist repainted the white clouds on his blue face for the next shot.
Amazing to watch, but completely, totally insane.

One of the best pop songs ever written. I love when people find out how fucking great Peter Gabriel is. To answer the music writing question, he composes all of his songs, but he employs a core group of musicians to execute ideas on the other instruments (common stalwarts are Tony Levin, David Rhodes, Larry Fast, Jerry Marotta, Robert Fripp, Manu Katche, etc.).
All his albums, especially the first 5, have such distinct sounds, each one different from the next. Each one crafted with the utmost care. It's rare to have had complete control over your sound for your entire career, but he did it. He was consistently on the cutting edge of music technology, being one of the first artists to incorporate the first digital sampler, The Fairlight CMI, into his music and recordings.
I can go on about this for hours, but the point is: Peter Gabriel is great and more people should know that. And know this...Peter Gabriel wipes the floor with Phil Collins.

Tony Levin on bass. He brings crazy groove to the songs. Peter Gabriel had a rotating cast of musicians with him, some closer to the core of his project. He brought in a ton of musical influences and musicians from around the world to record and perform with him. Combined with impeccable production, artistry and performance and you get a body of work unlike anything else.

Bass Line is the world's greatest G Gordon Liddy impersonator, Tony Levin. A force in his own right. Drums are Manu Katche, IIR.

  • @RubesGoodBrainCoffee
    @RubesGoodBrainCoffee 4 года назад +22

Tony Levin is on bass. One of his trademarks is playing something called the Chapman Stick, which is a wild looking instrument. You should Google it to look it up.
    .
Peter Gabriel was one of the founders of Genesis. They went through three drummers before finding Phil Collins. Collins' drumming elevated them to a whole new level. When Gabriel left in 1975, they auditioned -- mostly by listening to tapes -- around 400 singers, but they couldn't find one that they liked.
    .
Finally, once they found a guy and when they got into the studio to record, they realized that he wouldn't work out either. Eventually, Phil offered to give it a try. They were skeptical, because although he had a pleasant voice, they couldn't see him singing anything more powerful. They recorded him on one song and it seemed to work. Then they tried another and another until they finally finished the album! When they got ready for the tour, though, they started looking for singers again and then realized that they were just repeating the process. They had to find themselves another drummer instead, and the rest is history.
    .
Gabriel and Collins' voices are very similar. Steve Hackett, their guitarist, said it was like automatically having double vocal tracks when they harmonized together.
My recommendation as a great place to start with early Genesis: The studio version of 'Firth of Fifth.'
    .
This was a fun reaction. Thanks!

As good an album as "So" is, it was a let-down from Gabriel's previous two records, from 1980 and 1982. They were challenging albums and very exciting and novel.

Peter Gabriel was the original singer for Genesis, from the late 1960s to the mid 70s. He was renowned for his stage appearance and costumes, as well as his voice, writing, and arranging.
Phil Collins was Genesis’ drummer. When Gabriel left the band in the mid-70s, after failing to find a suitable vocalist, Collins volunteered/was volunteered to take over as vocalist. He was also still the drummer. His range and tone are very close to Gabriel’s. He was known to have a voice, and had been something of a child star (He played the Artful Dodger in the 60s film version of Oliver).
After Genesis, Gabriel became, and still is, a solo artist, recording and touring under his own name. He uses session musicians (the crème de la crème of them) for recording and touring.
The most frequent member of this ‘pick-up’ band is the bass player Tony Levin. He is a phenomenally inventive and skilled musician, and his style is unmistakable. He was also the first bassist to venture forth with the ‘Chapman Stick’, a multi stringed instrument with both bass and guitar strings in sets, played by hammering the strings down on the frets with both hands. He also uses a three string bass from time to time, which he often plays with short ‘drum sticks’ attached to the fingers of his right ‘plucking’ hand. Plus your usual range of 4 and 5 string basses (I’m unaware of him ever having played a 6 or more stringed bass apart from the ‘Stick’).

Peter Gabriel (as others told you) was the Original Frontman of GENESIS!! Phil Collins joined the band after their 3rd album as the Drummer and provided some background vocals. Phil Collins took over the vocals and handed his sticks to Chester Bennington upon the release of the album "Trick of the Tail" after Peter's departure! And Yes, they sound similar, Peter taught Phil Well!! However, you can hear the difference if you pay very close attention!! Keep Rockin

Peter was the lead singer of Genesis when Phil Collins was their drummer. Then Peter left in 1975 and Phil got to be the lead singer of the band. At the beginning, specially when Phil was singing the songs that previously had been sung by Peter, everybody said that their voices where very similar, but then Phil started to find his own voice, so it is funny how you (and many other people I’ve seen) pick up on the similarity of their voices, when I particularly can’t see it when they are singing their own songs (not songs that have been sung by both, I mean).

Yo! Where are your Phil Collins songs. His videos are great but live is best.....especially with Genesis.

    Good reaction.
This is my most favourite video of all time. PG is one of my favourite artists too and for me, his peak was his solo career from the period mid-80s to mid-90s, including, of course, this classic.
I love how the video symbolically begins and ends with depicting the start and end of life (fertilisation and embryo growth, then later PG sitting down in the chair to 'sleep' and then 'rising up' into the stars and waving goodbye), and continues the motif of reproduction and innuendo/imagery throughout, but also has hilarious visuals like the chicken dance, the vegetable face, and so on!
Also, it was a clever choice to use stop motion and claymation rather than the CGI of the time (as used, for example, in Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" which was only a year before this song, but looks so dated in comparison). As a result, the only bit that looks dated is the section where PG and the dancing girls/crowd are, with clothes and hairstyles clearly of the 80s.
PG's solo career is worth a deep-dive for a lot of great tracks and creative videos, including "Shock The Monkey", "Games Without Frontiers", "Big Time", "Steam" and "Digging In The Dirt". He also did great duets with Kate Bush ("Don't Give Up") and Sinead O'Connor ("Blood Of Eden").
If you find you like his work, his live performances are also a must. The whole Secret World Live tour from the early 1990s is brilliant and my personal favourite. The whole thing is on here at ruclips.net/video/6z-fevPXOTs/видео.html , but if you like it, do support the man by getting the DVD or download.
The entire crew look like they had such a great time, the (then) new singer Paula Cole was fantastic as the female lead on some iconic PG songs in place of Kate Bush and Sinead O'Connor, and as a backing singer too.
PG is one of my favourite artists for his lyrical and musical genius and the creativity of many of his video ("Sledgehammer" being one of the best IMO)

When I saw the song title I started laughing. I knew there would be an eyebrow raised, haha. Peter was extremely creative. Billy Ocean is another amazing artist, but his video for Loverboy is even way out there than Sledge Hammer. I have to close my eyes when I listen to it. His voice is out of this world, and I love his music. Check him out.

Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel were both vocals for genesis but Phil Collins was better known so people assume all of their songs were sung by Phil Collins but a lot of them were actually sang by Peter Gabriel.

The music video was created by Aardman Productions. They are famous for their work on the stop motion animation for the movie "Chicken Run" and also Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep.
The scene in this music video with the fish was Peter's least favorite part. They used REAL fish. Peter had to lay down face up and have a huge plate glass panel over top of him with the fish positioned on top of the glass. Under those hot studio lights, the fish got very ripe smelling. If you look closely, you'll see Peter's reaction to the bad smelling fish in that footage.
Peter's 2 daughters appear in the video, as well. They are the 2 young girls who are sitting on a wooden stool for a split second around 5:00 to 5:02.
It's funny you should mention that Peter sounds like Phil Collins. Both were members of the Progressive rock band Genesis (Peter being one of the co-founders). The band's manager, Tony Smith, said that Phil sounds more like Peter than Peter ever did (back in 1976), when Phil took over as lead singer after Peter left the band.

An amazing observation about Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins. As you now know Peter was the lead singer while Phil was the Drummer but when Peter went solo Phil stepped forward in the Band to sing b4 he, too, eventually went solo.

Great song and reaction. I remember watching this video premiere on MTV, in the Eighties and it was a total trip. Shock the Monkey is another great, wild song by PG.
If you're looking for a R&R Hall of Fame group to react to, please react to Yes. They have many great songs, including one of their first and greatest hits, Roundabout. Please, Jay, from another Jay, react to Roundabout. You'll love it!

Yes, Peter Gabriel was the main creative force and frontman for Genesis in its first years when it was one of the most adveturous prog-rock bands out there... till he left for a solo career. Phil Collins was originally Genesis' drummer, and moved over to the singing role. But without Gabriel's way prog-rock songwriting, Genesis changed format to a more pop outfit. And yes, their singing voices definitely can sound similar at times ,,, but such different content! Even this funk soul number Gabriel does here, he has to get all wacky with it in the lyrics and the video. And I love him for it. :-D

Check out Big Time by him. He was a former member of Genesis with Phil Collins, Anthony Phillips, Tony Banks And Johnathan King Who first named the band in 1969. I think they were around from 1968-2007 and some where around the mid nineties Phil left.🎸👍

Check out Genesis "Follow You Follow Me" from about 1978. It was on the album "A Trick of the Tail". Genesis was considered a progressive rock group. Phil Collins was the drummer. I remember it was often heard playing late in evening in my college dormatory. A great song to zone out to at the end of a day.

Actually, it was on their album '...and then there were three...' It's essentially a Mike Rutherford composition, although the other two contributed, too. Mike's a great songwriter, as well. All of them were. Phil Collins was actually the last one to the songwriting party, because he was hired primarily to be a drummer. When Genesis started, however, they had no intention of performing their own songs. The only reason why they did was that they quickly discovered that no one else would perform them!

In my life. Iv'e never met any one that doesn't love this album. The only ones are those whom have not ever heard it. This Sh1t is gold from end to end. But then every one involved with this album were pro's. Even though it was very experimental, they all had something to give. The far cowboy country friends, as well as my spiked nose metal head friends and many more, love the (even if they won't admit it ) Can't help but to do a little wiggle in their seat to this. The production was ace. And that bass, was from Tony Levin. One of the best production bassists ever. Love that you liked this. There is a lot more gold from this album.
