No CGI, No green screen, this was filmed. With a camera. Frame by frame, and his lips had to sync with the music the whole way through, this is next level dedication. I remember being blown away when this came out.

Unfortunately, in modern times people more more have accepted and got too accustomed to mediocrity and lack of originality, it is almost an expectation now. I am a musician and when I learn songs from pre-early 2000's back to the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and on, there was so much variety and creativity and talent. Now one can learn 4 chords and know about 90% of the music today. Same chords, same progressions, same generic melodies, same boring song structures, the only difference between songs is the key it is in and the type of singing voice.

MTV was like five years old and Peter Gabriel immediately elevated the art of the music video with Sledgehammer. He's still an amazing performer and creator. He's just amazing.

I don't think any of us realized just how special a time we were living in at the time. Those first 3-4 years on MTV was one of the most creative periods ever. You had a brand new format and artists were trying EVERYTHING. Every week there was something brand new, never seen before. I would come home from school in 8th grade, turn on MTV and it would stay on all evening until I went to bed. The 5 VJ's were like friends. The next day at school were would talk about any new videos that debuted the night before. We just took for granted it would always be that way.

Bands like three dog night, Chicago, Doobie Brothers and so many more were playing every instrument. The great thing about these videos from the 80's is that the music video was still in its infancy as an art form and it was literally "anything goes" and creativity was through the roof. So many memorable videos from that era!
As a teenager at the time I was fascinated with videos and how well they worked with the song. Some, like this one, fit the music so perfectly that 30-some years down the road you can't hear the song without the video playing in your head.

I tlked to Peter about this video one day, he told me that his part took a whole week to do and he hat to get a seperate phone line installed in his office just answer calls aon who made the video! He is a really nice guy, the compasny I worked for designed his studio at Ford, near Bath in Somerset. The girls in the office would ask him for autographs and he would spend time chatting to anybody and everybody in the place. He would just hang around talking until he was due to go and consult with the architects about the design. They made a model of the new studio out of stiff card and you could lift of the roof and look inside to the details. He was in his VW Golf GTI waiting to turn onto the main road the day I talked to him about this video, he didn't bother moving until we had concluded the converstaion and then he said goodbye and we went our seperate ways. Nice guy. I knew the Ardmans studio in Bristol and watched them doing the Wallace and Gromit movie, an intensive, time consuming art. They did this video.

‘Solsbury Hill’ was his first solo hit, and is loosely about his frame of mind leading up to leaving Genesis. Watch the video of it on his channel that is cut together from films of him playing it in concert over a span of 40 years... it’s 4 minutes of sheer joy. And the bass player (Tony Levin, a musical genius in his own right) doesn’t appear to age a day. Another great one, though PG didn’t write it, is “The Book of Love.” Deeply profound lyrics.

I would like to add that when people say they don’t make music like this anymore, you have to remember we’re listening to the best of the best. There was plenty of crap made back in the day as well (and that applies to whenever “back in the day” is for you). And so in another couple of decades we’ll be listening to the top, massive, hits of today and saying the same thing (“Uptown Funk”, anyone?).
There’ll always be great music. Thanks, Jamal, for bringing the older stuff back for those of us who remember when it was new and for those of you for whom it’s new now.

What I absolutely love about this video is it's authenticity. Back then there was no CGI so everything on screen was hand-made and after my 20th+ watch I'm still speechless and amazed by this work of art. 👌🔥

When we watched this in the 80's, we were sitting their with our mouth open. We can't believe one can make such wonderful things in a music video. It made it to MOMA even and was long on the lists of best MVs ever. (Think it still is) Nowadays we have teenagers who are doing such things at home. I like how you still have respect for what Peter Gabriel did. And his song is even good without the video. Please also check out Genesis' "Jesus he knows me"- this is fun too.

Love Peter Gabriel and LOVE this album. Next, Red Rain! Every song on So was awesome, but Red Rain is just amazing. Big Time is fun too. Don't Give Up is a duet with Kate Bush that will choke you up and bring tears to your eyes. In Your Eyes with Youssou N'Dour is also great. I saw this tour at my favorite venue ( Merriweather Post Pavillion - outdoors in Columbia MD). Youssou N'Dour and his band opened (they're from Senegal) and he was amazing! Then Peter and his band came on and played for about 2+ hours. He did the crowd-surfing thing with a wireless mic for Lay Your Hands on Me (must give his security guys ulcers!) that was unbelievable! Then for the encore, Youssou N'Dour and his entire band came back on stage and they played another hour plus with both bands (about 30 people). Best concert I ever saw, and I've seen a lot of concerts.
Also, it would be worth your while to head to Wikipedia to read about this song and video. It was pretty groundbreaking at the time and won a lot of awards.
Thanks and more Peter Gabriel please! Be well and stay safe.
    Peace from SF

+1 for Red Rain! Turn it up loud, The intro is amazing! Peter did some amazing performance art when I saw him do this song live. He laid curled up on the stage in total darkness and was "discovered" by some alien-looking "creatures" with glowing eyes. They recoiled in surprise as he began to awaken. And then an amazing Red Rain effect. Brilliant!

Vincent Schmitt their most pop albums are Little Creatures and True Stories, the earlier albuns are more experimental. The last one, Naked, is practically a world music album. Regarding videos, I recommend “Nothing but flowers”, “Once in a lifetime”, “And she was”, “Love for sale”, everything from the live album “Stop making sense”, mainly “Psycho Killer”. And, last but not least, “Wild wild life”, that contains scenes from David Byrne’s movie: “True Stories”.
