I had the pleasure of seeing this tour in-person in Largo, MD (near DC.) It was increible -- I also saw him on the So tour in 1986 (I'm 50 -- so I was 16 when So came out) and it was magic. There are two stages -- round/female and square/male. This song was on the round stage. And crossing the gap between these two is a conveyor belt. Plus, Manu Katche is in the top 5 drummers in the world. One thing to note about this live version -- he added two sections - at the beginning "Accepting all I've done and said/I want to stand and stare again." Those were added after the original release of So in 1986. There's a studio version of the new arrangement as well. The low bass voice was a recording of singer Ronnie Bright. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Bright Anyway, thank you for your reaction and insight.

Such a great example of Gabriel's (and others) "World Music" movement. Beautiful. Many of those dance movements can be traced to indigenous peoples. Not just random motions
I didn't know that. But the dancing here reminds me of what Ladysmith Black Mambazo did on stage. (P.S. to Jamel...react to some LBM if you can. "Lindelani" is a good song to start with if you can find it without its unseemly association with Michael Jackson.)

Peter Gabriel was one of the greatest showmen of his generation. I'd put him up there with Freddie Mercury and David Bowie in terms of being a complete package, not just an incredible songwriter and performer, but also understanding the need for a good amount of theatricality during a live performance. Watch him on the tour he did with Sting in 2016 was a life-changing experience, and one of my biggest regrets in life is that I didn't learn to really appreciate him until after the Secret World tour, so all I have of that tour is the video recording. That said -- if you get a chance to check out the song Secret World from the same tour, it's one of my favorites.
Definitely a favorite concert artist. I first saw him back in the late 70s after he left Genisis. I think I saw every one of his tours. I was never disappointed.
I’ve seen Peter Gabriel on tour a few times...Brilliant is a excellent choice of words to describe him! Once back in the 80 ‘s at a show, he fell into the audience ( on purpose 😊) and “ crowd surfed” 😳 I still have a piece of his shirt! 😂❤️
Peter Gabriel figured out WAY back in his Genesis days that overwhelming your senses with layers of audio, layers of visual images, could shape the emotional energy in the room. What you see here is a man/band/artist at the peak of his powers. 30 years of life experience making music and performing. He is phenomenal, its very hard not to get lost in it.
In 1987, Peter Gabriel’s album “SO” took me through a hospital stay. My brother brought me a Sony Walkman and the “SO” cassette. I must have listened to that tape 20 times during my stay, I loved it so much! His duo with Kate Bush, “Don’t Give Up” meant so much to me with what I going through. Thanks!!
The chick doing background vocals is Paula Cole. She had the hits "Where Have All The Cowboy's Gone" and "I Don't Wanna Wait" which is also this theme song to "Dawson's Creek"
Paula Cole is an absolute treasure of a human being. I think she was only 17 when they did this tour. The albums she later released were fire. I had the privilege of seeing her live twice, and both times my jaw was on the floor. Truly a gem. Peter was instrumental in her discovery, as he was for many artists around the world.
Love your shirt. Now, Peter Gabriel is a good human. When he performs this song he proves that the world can be a better place. A true celebration of love, music and dance
Yes it reminded me of Paul Simon's Graceland album.. what's amazing is this concert was recorded on the Secret World Tour 1994.. the sound was exceptional even then.
This was my favorite song ever recorded before I heard Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah." This is such a poetic, searing, spiritual piece of music. And Peter Gabriel's delivery both in this version and the studio version are so heartfelt. If you haven't done so already, you would enjoy reacting to Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up."
This song, this version and live performance almost takes on a spiritual transcendence, it is spectacular. The original version on the album "SO" is fantastic but this is what seeing a live performance is all about
I find i really miss your appreciation for the music & your gentle soul when I don't watch for awhile. I LOVE this live version of In Your Eyes To this day, it is still my favorite song by Peter Gabriel. Stay safe Jamel.
This is one of those performances like The Band's "The Last Waltz" and (one of your favorites) the Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" in which there is magic in a bottle being caught on film. There's no bad songs. It's uplifting and exhilarating all the way through.
Peter got inspired by african culture and melt it in his music. You have to hear Biko,Shacking the tree,Rythm of the heat,Intruder,Solsbury hill...All in live version!
I tell everyone , get the DVD . Secret World Live , if you've never seen it. Sit and watch it, when you're done you will be in awe of what you've just seen . I was never a huge fan of Peter Gabriel , and I stumbled across secret world and watched it. I was blown away , it was like a religious experience just to watch. I couldn't imagine being at that SHOW.
Peter Gabriel is one of those performers over the span of a long career who I can say puts on some of the best shows ever. I have seen countless shows and artists in my life but Peter stands out among the most memorable.
Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting all helped to introduce us to the beauty and talent of World Music, performing with big starts from Africa that we had never heard of before and opening our eyes to new rhythms, chord progressions, and languages
I hadn’t seen this performance since the concert. Gods light was shooting through all 15,000 that night. It was the most spiritual experience of my life. Everyone in every nation needs to watch this and love one another.
He's talking about humanity in the lyrics... Like you Jamel. Peter was the first person to really promote what we now call World Music and you can see a lot of the musicians in the band there. In fact he started to first world music festival WOMAD. I went to see Peter 7 years ago and to be in the audience when he did this song was just mesmerising.
Yes! I'm so glad you listened to this one! Please do Blood of Eden or Come Talk To Me from this same live concert (Secret World). The vocals are unbelievable!
As others have mentioned, the young woman singing is Paula Cole. And yes, she is an amazing singer in her own right. This song has always been amazing and this live version is by far the best version. Much of the musical influence from this song came from African influence and fits perfectly in this song. To me, this song is a song of hope. Seeing people looking into their eyes without judgement. Just love for your fellow human being no matter where we come from. We are all human and deep down inside, the vast majority of the world is good. We all want the same thing. Music is the universal language. No matter our differences, we can all come together and have a shared experience for a few hours and all of our differences fade away and mean nothing. If we could only hold on to that feeling, the world would be a much better place. Love and respect your fellow human being. We are much closer than we are apart. If we could harness that and put it into action. That continues to be my hope. Thank you for the reaction Jamel. As usual, always great. Stay safe my friend.

Such a great example of Gabriel's (and others) "World Music" movement. Beautiful. Many of those dance movements can be traced to indigenous peoples. Not just random motions
I miss the world music channels on cable TV in the 90’s. I got to experience so many artists I would not have heard of otherwise.
@@agresticumbra Me too.
I didn't know that. But the dancing here reminds me of what Ladysmith Black Mambazo did on stage. (P.S. to Jamel...react to some LBM if you can. "Lindelani" is a good song to start with if you can find it without its unseemly association with Michael Jackson.)
@@revsharkie I'm not all that familiar w/ LBM. But I know they covered "Biko" by Gabriel. Check out this link. All in the time period & Spirit of this "World Music" Genre. Gabriel was very influential in bringing out "World Music". So cool! So fascinating! ruclips.net/video/r7X9zeK0zyQ/видео.html
Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest musicians, ever. He is white, but that is not his fault.
He is a GENIUS. Fact.
Not his fault that he’s where? wtf? You take that racism and hit the bricks.
Peter Gabriel is brilliant in concert - I saw him three times during his Back to Back tour a few years ago.
You can't even classify it as a concert.
More like a Music and theatrical experience.
I cant believe my eyes....i have been waiting for this reaction...Wooohooo
Peter Gabriel figured out WAY back in his Genesis days that overwhelming your senses with layers of audio, layers of visual images, could shape the emotional energy in the room. What you see here is a man/band/artist at the peak of his powers. 30 years of life experience making music and performing. He is phenomenal, its very hard not to get lost in it.
Such beauty is almost unbeleivable. Peter is a strange wonder. God bless him.
peter gabriel is one of those singers that with his tones & inflections could sing the phonebook and make you move
In 1987, Peter Gabriel’s album “SO” took me through a hospital stay. My brother brought me a Sony Walkman and the “SO” cassette.
I must have listened to that tape 20 times during my stay, I loved it so much!
His duo with Kate Bush, “Don’t Give Up”
meant so much to me with what I going through.
Thanks!!
This song brings me to tears.
This is a celebration of life and diversity. I love it! #thebipolartruth
Song is about human kind! We are all one in your eyes!
The chick doing background vocals is Paula Cole. She had the hits "Where Have All The Cowboy's Gone" and "I Don't Wanna Wait" which is also this theme song to "Dawson's Creek"
This is blowing my mind
And lungs to her toenails!
I absolutely adore her take on "Don't Give Up" from this show.
@@nathanfreeman681 This is from Peter Gabriel's 1993 Secret World tour. Paula Cole was born in 1968 so she is either 24 or 25 here.
I want to stand and stare again, in your eyes.❤❤❤
Also, look up Youssou N’Dour. He’s a Senegalese singer who does vocals for this song. He’s INCREDIBLE!!!
Líi was the soundtrack of my time in Dakar! Absolutely amazing musician.
I love Youssou N'Dour!
A great voice on the studio version. Papa Wemba is filling the role well here.
I was going to recommend Youssou N'dour. He's one of my favorite singers. Check out his song "Birima".
Both versions are excellent.
You need to listen to "Biko" from the same concert. Peter Gabriel had all the musicians from S. Africa
You need to watch that whole concert , incredible show
This video moves me every time I watch it. Thanks for your reaction, Jamel.
Love your shirt. Now, Peter Gabriel is a good human. When he performs this song
he proves that the world can be a better place.
One of the top 100 songs ever written imo
Greatest song EVER!!!
Let it guide you to who YOU really are
Peter got inspired by african culture and melt it in his music. You have to hear Biko,Shacking the tree,Rythm of the heat,Intruder,Solsbury hill...All in live version!
The album version of the song is good, but this live version just elevates it to a whole different level.
By far my favorite version. Just moves everything in me.
Athens 87 is also excellent.
This is a great version -- Peter Gabriel is such an imaginative showman.
How can you NOT smile watching this...how can you not dance!
It's a real joy to see a brother listening to this song and these artists and being at a lose for words as the rest of us were.
This entire concert was awesome.
This touched my heart, it made me cry. Thank you Jamel.

You have to be dead inside not to feel when hearing this. What a great decade for music.... we were so fortunate.
Peter Gabriel is one of those performers over the span of a long career who I can say puts on some of the best shows ever.
I have seen countless shows and artists in my life but Peter stands out among the most memorable.
Look at the smile on your face...this performance does this to me too, every time I see it...its a mystical experience...just love the whole vibe.
Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting all helped to introduce us to the beauty and talent of World Music, performing with big starts from Africa that we had never heard of before and opening our eyes to new rhythms, chord progressions, and languages
Everyone living in 2020 needs to watch this right now, every day.
Too busy building a time machine to get the f**k out of 2020. When I finish it, I will comply. ;)
I hadn’t seen this performance since the concert. Gods light was shooting through all 15,000 that night. It was the most spiritual experience of my life. Everyone in every nation needs to watch this and love one another.
Happy 2021!
THIS IS MY FAV SONG FROM HIM AND MY FAV PERFORMANCE! THIS SONG IS SO DEEP
This was the song John Cusak's held up boombox was playing in the movie "Say Anything".
Wow! Zoomed right to that moment and what a trip it was. Tears, even. So nostalgic right now it hurts. xo
He has so many greats. "Blood of Eden" always gets me.
Peter Gabriel gives out such a positive life force. Have been a fan since I was a child.
This is lovely performance, everyone having fun being happy.
Very deep song! Personally, my favorite! Peter Gabrielle is in my top 5 most talented of all time!😊
This gave my whole body the chills.
Music is healing.
Namaste 🙏🏼
💜💫✌🏼🎵
Stay safe my friend.
is she's really paula cole?
wow
One of the most beautiful songs ever created.
We were at that concert it was amazing and that song was our wedding song.
OMG I love this song. Peter Gabriel is a legend! Paula Cole is incredible!
You would enjoy his whole concert. He has so many talented people around him.
