Got to go to one in my hometown. The artists that were there were headliners from around the world and Peter closed the festival with the band you see on the stage. There are no words to describe that day. 🌹

I’ve only seen this twice. This to me is one of the most incredible, magical, inspiring soul feeling videos I have ever witnessed in my 60 yrs on earth. Btw Peter Gabriel is a genius. This song is from the record “So” which is a masterpiece in my opinion. Sorry if I sound hyperbolic but this video moves me every time I watch it. Wow just wow
This performance also moves me every time. It's a celebration of unity and reminds us that we're all connected - we're all African. Then I look at the world around us and despair....

Peter Gabriel was at the forefront of a style that emerged in the lte 80s called 'World Music' that incorporates musical rhythms and melodies from very diverse cultures. This video always nearly moves me to tears - there is so much joy (as well as talent) on this stage! Another unique artist in World Music was the Afro-Celt Sound System - love their stuff!
Produced by Peter Gabriel's label RealWorld. Excellent group to discover... I am thinking of Colossus, Lagan, Eirann, Persistence of memories... the first 3 or 4 albums are absolutely incredible... as the name of the group indicates, it is a mix between Celtic, African and electronic music!!! Very mindblowing !!
Afro-Celt produced a CD-R that you could both listen to on a CD player, or on a computer you could use their samples to make your own songs. I remember playing with that for days on end. No one at the time realized how that would eventually merge with old-fashioned DJing to create modern music performance and DJing.
He has always involved different musical styles of the world into his music, this was not something that people did in the 1970's when he did his 1st solo album after leaving the band genesis. He is involved in UNICEF and did song about Steve Biko who was murdered in South Africa which is worth a listen. He performed it for Nelson Mandela after end of aparteid. I would suggest listening to red rain or solsbury hill next, great reaction
God, I adore Peter Gabriel. For more than 35 years he’s been my favorite artist. This entire concert is pure magic. Every song. Peter has been a champion of human rights throughout his career, and has always worked with different musicians from around the world. The rabbit hole is deep with this one.
This is my favorite version of my all-time favorite song. This song means everything to me. I just saw Peter Gabriel in September 2023 (30 years after this was recorded), and he still performs with the same passion and energy even though he's definitely an old man now at age 73. His voice sounds almost exactly the same, which is amazing considering all the time that has passed. He was 43 here, which isn't exactly young. Unfortunately, he didn't have Youssou N'Dour to sing the part in the West African Wolof language: _Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir_ That translates roughly to "Your eyes, light in, heat in, your eyes, I am inside." It's essentially matching the English lyrics. Peter is from the UK, but this concert was performed in Italy in November 1993.
OOOOOOOOH YES!!!...what a treasure!! this is why we went to concerts in the 80s....even though this was in the early 2000's...PLEASE REACT TO SHAKING THE TREE from same Concert!! ..lighter in the air and much love to you , the kids and the doggie!❤
Peter Gabriel was a pioneering artist who brought 'World Music' to life. You were both right, his music had elements from many different cultural traditions. He was the artist who first stood against the Apartied in South Africa, he brought many artists together to raise awareness which ultimately brought an end to the Human Rights abuses. He wrote the soundtrack for the film 'The Last Temptation of Christ" For that project he explored the music traditions of the middle east. This man is a genius.
I was a tween/teen in the 80s and was a huge Peter Gabriel fan. Of course, this is one of the best songs ever but this performance is unbelievable having the African chorus come in I mean just everything is nothing short of spectacular. One of the most vivid statements for the power of music to join and heal. The way they face each other, they dance in unison (and focus their steps on meeting the earth rather than leaving it like Western dance), the multiple languages, and the pure joy in their expressions and communion…I hope they see this in 500 years and know we understood the assignment even if we didn’t complete it most of the time.
Lots of comments telling you that Peter Gabriel "was the former lead singer of Genesis", then failing to note that Genesis in the Gabriel era was one of the greatest bands, ever, with multiple fabulous songs and albums. They helped create the musical genre known as "progressive rock", which was quite popular in the very late '60's and up throught the late '70's, which looks like before your time. It's never really ever came back into popularity since then, although lots of musically-inclined kids grew up to form their own bands to compose and play progressive rock that received zero radio play and went unloved and unnoticed except by diehard prog fans like myself. Together, these second-generation bands are known as "neo-progressive", in part because they tend to incorporate a bit of the music that had obtained some level of poplularity during their young lives into their progressive compositions. The fun part is that these neo-progressive bands are, for the most part, completely unknown to younger people despite the fact that a lot of them are still touring, playing theater-size venues all over the world, to the coterie of prog fans who still carry that torch. Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, IQ, The Flower Kings, and many others have made tremendous music over the past several decades. You should check them out. Given the banality of what passes for music today, maybe prog is ready for a huge comeback.
Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of Genesis until he went solo. He has had a fantastic solo career. This song,Sledgehammer and Shock the Monkey are all great songs of his.
@@OG_Wakanobi Nah,it was mutual. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album was almost entirely Pete's conceptualization and after having a taste of that much control,he wasn't very interested in giving it back. And the other 4 lads weren't keen on essentially being Pete's back-up band if that was the way it was going to go. So he felt he had outgrown the constraints of being in a band and the band didn't do anything to dissuade him.
Lots of African influence here, that's what you're thinking Asia. Tribal drum rhythms and singing/chanting. Hints of blues/jazz in there too. Amazing musicianship. Peter Gabriel is one of a kind too. Him & Phil Collins both served as lead singers for the band Genisis.
You must do the video with him and Kate Bush "Don't Give Up" - excellent! He has one of my favourite voices in rock. Another great African vibe was when Paul Simon made an album with a South African group. Listen to "Homeless" or "DIamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes".
Peter Gabriel runs Womad which is a world music festival, he has championed African music , I think they were singing Senegalese , you got it spot on both of you .
Wow, 7 months ago....I need to surf more. This is one of my favorite live concert performances...love every song in it..and my taste in music is very wide in range and in depth...keep loving the music and maybe, just maybe it will bring us all together....take care...
Been waiting for this one. The entire Secret World concert movie is a must see. Peter Gabriel was very involved with apartheid in South africa. He uses sounds and instruments from many cultures. The man singing at the very end is Youssou N'Dour and he is singing in his native language of Wolof.
The core of the song is the same as the studio version, but this live interpretation performance is next level amazing. A reaction to the studio version would be good for you 2 to hear. It was used in a memorable scene from the 1989 movie "Say Anything..." Thank you for the reaction. Happy birthday, Paul!
I saw this concert tour live! Beyond any doubt the most uplifting musical event I've ever experienced. The entire "Secret World Live" concert / album is amazing!!
Love watching you two! Just a bit of interesting info…this song was written for Rosanna Arquette, the actress. And so was the song Rosanna by Toto. She must be something special. This song is best known from “the boombox scene” in the 80’s movie called Say Anything with John Cusack. A GenX classic and worth watching in your pajamas with a bowl of popcorn. Keep doing what you’re doing. Watching your reactions to my old songs makes me laugh and you call my attention to so many things in the songs that I hadn’t noticed. Love you both.
The woman singing is Paula Cole who had a popular run in the 90s as a solo artist. She sang Where Have All the Cowboys Gone and won a Grammy. Peter Gabriel sang a song with her on her debut album
Peter Gabriel is one of the all-time great live performers. His concerts deploy spectacle in a brilliantly original way, and he has the musical genius to back up the spectacle. He would be great without it, but it only makes his performances more captivating.
This was during a period when several HUGE artists reached out to International artists to join with them and create music and tour. Gabriel has this African group, Paul Simon did African groups, Sting got some Middle Eastern artists to join him, etc. By doing this they also introduced us here in the Western world to new music styles and artists we would never have known. You need to check out more.
Gabriel promoted WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) and champions music from all areas of the world. He bought Youssou N'Dour (featured here ) from Senegal to many Western peoples notice. Also, special mention here to one of my fav drummers, Manu Katche and the incomparable Tony Levin on bass
It' s called World Music and it's from everywhere. You guys got it. Peter brought this to light starting in the early 90;s. when it come to Peter you are going down a magnificent rabbit hole. Enjoy.
Asia…. This is why live performance videos are so amazing. It’s not just about the lyrics or the guitar. It’s a performance. Words flashing on a screen can’t give you this feeling. It’s the interaction on stage and in the audience. That beyond the music there’s a connection between the artists and the fans. It’s magic🪄🪄🪄. By the way this performance was recorded live in Modena Italy. 1993.
The original album version of this song featured Youssou N'Dour from Senegal in West Africa. He is one of the biggest and most popular singers and musicians from Africa. He has an amazing range and the woman in this video sort of takes his place though the man in African dress next to her takes some of the parts too. I saw Peter in concert in 1986, the year this album, So, came out, and Youssou N'Dour and his band was the opening act and they were phenominal. Then Peter came on and played for 2 hours, and then for the encore, Youssou's entire band joined Peter's band on stage and played this and about 4 or 5 more songs. The concert was 4 hours long and was probably the best live show I've ever seen! Back then Peter still crowd surfed during the song 'Lay Your Hands on Me'. Pretty wild to see a star as big as him dive into the crowd and let people pass him around! And if you want another powerful song from him, try Biko. He wrote that in honor of the South African anti-apartheid activist, Steven Biko, who was beaten to death by SA police. 20,000 people attended his funeral, and made world news, and moved Peter to write the song. Thanks for listening and sharing. Keep going with more PG! Peace from SF
Love his music. One of the best in worldbeat music, world music.. Yall are correct. Describing their music perfectly. Music from all over the world. Africa, European, Caribbean, Native American, Latin, some Asian, etc.
Peter Gabriel has been a proponent of African rights & music for four decades. The man in the dashiki is Youssou N'Dour, a living legend in African music. Oh, and the lady in the sleeveless dress with the amazing voice was Sinead O'Connor. (RIP)
One of my favorite songs! With so much going on, it's easy to not get the lyrics, and they're beautiful. It does have an African influence: "It features Youssou N'Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God."
The singer with the red hat: Papa Wemba a very popular Congo singer and leader of the SAPE movement. Jean Claude Naimro on piano: member of the most popular Caribbean band " Kassav" french west indies band. The drummer is Manu Kaché , a senegal/ french drummer and internationally knowed. Musicians from Africa or Caribbean . Peter Gabriel was the first pop singer to do this , mix all influences, do " world music" in 80's before it's becomes " normal" nowadays.
I always loved Peter Gabriel! His music is timeless! His music is “progressive rock” “new wave” he was with Genesis in the 70s, and became a great solo artist during the 80s, his world music is mostly based on activism for humanity and human rights! You guy’s should listen to another great songs “Biko” and for “Nelson Mandela” his music is pure and real! From the heart and soul! Yes his music is got a lot of African influences! This got to be one of the greatest live performances of the 80s!
Asia and BJ @ the 6min mark....world music beat. the original song had huge drum and percussion on it, with airy ethereal guitar, and the superb bass. All this song needs is the voice, you can put the voice with any other instruments singularly and it would still be a great song. Probably my most favorite song ever.
You probably know by now that Peter Gabriel was the singer of Genesis in the early days and then went solo. I got to see him when he was with Genesis in they're very early days in Pennsylvania where I grew up and then again and Philadelphia at JFK. He's always put on a great show The secret garden is based I think more of African sounds and African bass sounds so that's why it's that drum kind of thing that you hear between his backup vocalist who is actually from Africa. It's amazing the whole tour was great not a bad song in the bunch.
In the 90's he used to do what was called WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) festival. He brought people from all over the world to perform. It came to my city and was one of the best festivals I have ever been to!!!
Wife here..Absolutely beautiful song!!..One of the best song's ever!!..My Husband and I met a famous (hair rocker) Kip Winger... not long ago and we actually started talking about how great Peter Gabriel absolutely is!!..Love the 100 churches singing Line...Amazing..You two always seem so natural and bring a smile to my face!!🥰
Come Talk to Me, Down to Earth, Shaking the Tree, Kiss That Frog...are MUST LISTEN TO songs. All African inspired...and his amazing collaborations with incredible voices and musicians. He is a genius!
My ex and I burned up the dance floor after the wedding, dancing to this, our wedding song, that had only just come out. Before the year was out, I would see him performing it live at an Amnesty International concert at RFK, in Philly, where she was to get her doctorate. I saw him, not we. We were already history in the making, sorry to say. The song was like a pair of bookends, as that was also our last meeting. Freed from having to deal with me, she went on to teach at Harvard and Oxford, so it most not have been all that bad. You would do well to mine the vast catalog of Peter Gabriel tunes and performances, with or without Genesis. "Games Without Frontiers" might be a timely place to continue. Anyway, great review as always. Peace on Earth!
One of my all time favorite songs!!! This is THE SONG playing front the ghetto blaster he's holding up outside the girl he's fallen for/"s window!!! It's been recreated in many movies since in different ways!!! This live version is fantastic and has so much more added and put into the song!!!!! I'm a happy man!! Thank you both!!! 🤗❤✌
This is Peter’s way of representing humanity as one. The assembly of cultures gathered together under the universal language of music. “In Your Eyes” demonstrates the power of unity so many of us strive for and how even though our cultures may be different we are all the same. We are all connected and one in your eyes. ✌️to all
near the end of the song they use an African language called Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God.
Just amazing stuff here. New World Music. It's amazing what human beings can accomplish when you come from pure love.. Peter was was big in fighting the Apartheid movement in Africa Spreading LOVE across the planet.
You guys responded to this wonderful performance EXACTLY the same way I did!! And the late great Papa Wamba added so much soul to this wonderful tune. And don't forget the beautiful voice of Miss Paula Cole!!
This is the highest on my list of "I wish I had been there!" Alas, I have the DVD which is one of the most entertaining concerts and best sounding DVD concerts. As at least one other commenter mentioned, 'Shakin' the Tree' from the same concert is just as awesome and smile inducing. Really enjoy listening to music with yall- Thanks!
Hi ,Peter was with Genesis in the 70’s and has made some amazing music right the way through his life so talented but not just that he’s a decent human being , he cares , nice reaction to an uplifting song from you both 👍
Universal, exactly. This is a kind of songs that lifts up your spirits and makes you want to become one with the whole universe. Actually, I wonder if there are similar songs, creating that same atmosphere, in the world music genre ? If anyone has suggestions, I'd be interested to discover.
I have always thought that Parachute Club "Rise Up" was such a song. Toronto at the time it was made was THE world's most multicultural city, with HALF of its 2M residents born in another country, and most of the million Canadians not born in the city. The song reflects the struggle to become a people by intention. And we did, for a time.
The African guy singing was the late, great Papa Wemba, who sang music until the moment he died, suffering a heart attack on stage. RIP. I saw Peter Gabriel on this tour, and many more. He was the gateway drug to my deep passion for world music. Dig in. There is so much to explore!
The language they switched to midway into the song is Wolof. His drummer, Manu Katché and his good friend Youssou N'dour are from Senegal where Wolof is one of the main languages. Although, Papa Wemba is Congolese so he might have been singing some Congolese. Peter Gabriel has been a champion of world music and dance for decades, and was a strong voice in the fight to end apartheid.
@@kwanshiyin He’s a wonderful drummer, right up there with the best there is, and particularly adept at African rhythms that Peter Gabriel has adopted. His by-play with Tony Levin on bass gives the music such soul and vibrancy.
I've only had the privilege of seeing Peter Gabriel live three times: Twice for the "So" tour, and once for "Secret World", this tour. Each time was a revelation. He used to end concerts with "Biko" and then started ending concerts with this song. Both are amazing and both transport you to places you never realized you NEEDED to go. Live participation in this one leaves you in tears of joy and you KNOW that you and everyone else there experienced something you'll never forget.
Happy birthday Paul! I love this performance, thanks for requesting it. When I was 20, I used this song as part of my 1st communion ceremony. I substituted the word Love for Lord. I am now 66. Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins both are alumni of Genesis. They are both G.O.A.TS. This choir/musicians was from one of the African nations.👍🏾👋🏾👵🏿💞💞
I've been reading quite a few commentaries and I agree with nearly all of them. But one more thing that must be said is that Peter Gabriel's song "Biko" is one legacy song. It was played on pirate radio in South Africa during the Apartheid years. And usually, Gabriel closed his shows with it... a very powerful song.
The man in the red hat is Congolese musician Papa Wemba and his band comes up for the final dance.
The tune is African influenced, and Gabriel has been a champion of world music for years now. Amazing!
spot on.
West African! They are singing in the main language of Senegal.
Pete,David Byrne and Brian Eno and Mick Fleetwood were all on that trip well before it finally blew up in popularity thanks to Paul Simon's Graceland album.

And the other 4 lads weren't keen on essentially being Pete's back-up band if that was the way it was going to go. So he felt he had outgrown the constraints of being in a band and the band didn't do anything to dissuade him.
"Hi There!" BIG TIME is also a great song :-)
So glad you picked the live version. So emotional & beautiful.
Been waiting for this one. The entire Secret World concert movie is a must see. Peter Gabriel was very involved with apartheid in South africa. He uses sounds and instruments from many cultures. The man singing at the very end is Youssou N'Dour and he is singing in his native language of Wolof.
Youssou N'Dour (Senegal) is on album version !!
For this concert, it was Papa Wemba (Belgium Congo, now Democratic Republic of Congo)
@@franckgrandis2956 i seen Youssou N'Dour tour with him in 1987 and 1988 on the amnesty int'l human rights now.
He was involved in standing against apartheid. You make it sound like he supported it.
@@ugadawgs1990 I reread my comment and I can see how someone would think that. Yes, he was AGAINST apartheid. Thank you for pointing that out to me.
The core of the song is the same as the studio version, but this live interpretation performance is next level amazing. A reaction to the studio version would be good for you 2 to hear. It was used in a memorable scene from the 1989 movie "Say Anything..." Thank you for the reaction. Happy birthday, Paul!
This is so West Africa! I used to live in Mali, hypnotic rhythms, haunting melodies, birthplace of Reggae! Peace y'all
I saw this concert tour live! Beyond any doubt the most uplifting musical event I've ever experienced. The entire "Secret World Live" concert / album is amazing!!
Pure Quality On Top Of Pure Quality With Added Pure Quality.
Asia & BJ, his "Solsbury Hill" and "Games Without Frontiers" are next for you. In Your Eyes is his best song imo!
I would say all three you named are my favorites, along with Biko...even though it makes me cry.
ABSOLUTELY 💯
Wife here..Yyyyyaaasss absolutely...
Solsbury Hill live is fantastic...
Totally agree with these suggestions. Those are his 3 best, IMO. Absolutely love Solsbury Hill!
Definitely a lot of African influence in Peter Gabriel's later music, and he collaborated with many African musicians.
Damn right!
Peter Gabriel has been a proponent of African rights & music for four decades. The man in the dashiki is Youssou N'Dour, a living legend in African music. Oh, and the lady in the sleeveless dress with the amazing voice was Sinead O'Connor. (RIP)
One of the coolest songs ever. There are a few videos that break down the beat, etc. Well worth the research
I saw Peter Gabriel twice when he brought his WOMAD tour around in the 1990s, and again at Woodstock 94. His shows were epic.
This was our wedding song back in 1992! There's a lot of talent on that stage.
Yes the end of the song is sung in an African language. Ironically this song is sung by a guy who has some of the most beautiful eyes I've seen
Peter Gabriel. One of the greatest ever frontmen and singers.
The happiness in this song and the band shows how the world should be. No hate..just love and togetherness. Peters live shows are amazing
It's 100% multicultural Asia, Peter always makes space for diversity in his music and it's incredible
African also. The violinist is Indian. Most others African.
@@brianyoungberg9904 I was referring to Asia the lady whose reacting not Asia the continent lol🤣🤣
I still like peter gabriel today i follow him since 83
Shaking The Tree is another great one from the same concert!
The whole show is worth watching. Lucky I saw it in person.
A stupendous video. I think it’s called World Beat or World Music, all cultures coming together to make music.
What a show to see live was one I will never forget fun times !
"How music brings people together"... I was thinking the exact same thing 2 seconds before you said it. You're damn right, man.
This is Peter’s way of representing humanity as one. The assembly of cultures gathered together under the universal language of music. “In Your Eyes” demonstrates the power of unity so many of us strive for and how even though our cultures may be different we are all the same. We are all connected and one in your eyes. ✌️to all
One of the best Live performances i've ever seen.
One of the best live performances ever!👍🏻❤️☮️
African music is a huge influence on Peter Gabriel. This entire album really
I think I have heard the term "World Music" used for this type of music. Feel good, uplifting. Hope we see more Peter Gabriel down the line.
YES!!! African influenced... Africa is the core of music.
near the end of the song they use an African language called Wolof.
Here you go! Lots to hear from him!
Hi ,Peter was with Genesis in the 70’s and has made some amazing music right the way through his life so talented but not just that he’s a decent human being , he cares , nice reaction to an uplifting song from you both 👍
Asia is Right!!! Africa...African South African music...She is right!!!!
Universal, exactly. This is a kind of songs that lifts up your spirits and makes you want to become one with the whole universe. Actually, I wonder if there are similar songs, creating that same atmosphere, in the world music genre ? If anyone has suggestions, I'd be interested to discover.
How about this? ruclips.net/video/LXmhuNVAFfw/видео.html (the last one is an absolute mayhem)
This is from Studio ghibli anniversary concert. The choir simply breathtaking: ruclips.net/video/1KPqWlluUcI/видео.html
Last two entries from Yann Tiersen: ruclips.net/video/TBOdQVR6r7o/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/hb1O4oPJ2TY/видео.html
Going sto see him in bergen Norway 2023 What a party...
The African guy singing was the late, great Papa Wemba, who sang music until the moment he died, suffering a heart attack on stage. RIP. I saw Peter Gabriel on this tour, and many more. He was the gateway drug to my deep passion for world music. Dig in. There is so much to explore!
Peter has spent many years in Africa which is the vibe you're getting. He's all about human rights. You should listen to Biko. Another great tune
Just astounding. Peter Gabriel is so good. And this is greatness. African music is so joy-filled!
Impossible to watch this without ending up with a smile on your face.
Many Katché is French of Ivorian extraction.
@@TheMudman2010 I stand corrected, thank you. He was identified as Senegalese in an interview I read about the tour.
@@kwanshiyin He’s a wonderful drummer, right up there with the best there is, and particularly adept at African rhythms that Peter Gabriel has adopted. His by-play with Tony Levin on bass gives the music such soul and vibrancy.
The lady with the fantastic backing vocals is Paula Cole.. A fantastic artist in her own right along with a who's who of international musicians.
"Shaking the tree" from the same concert is another great song.
Peter founded WOMAD a movement to publicise world music, it's been one of his defining successes.
I was lucky enough to see WOMAD tour that year and Peter and this band closed the festival. I will NEVER forget!!!
The joy of being as if we're children again ♥️
