I never get tired of hearing this song and love watching reactions to it. Peter Gabriel is a musical genius who pushed a lot of boundaries. His music is timeless. Thanks for reacting to this.
For a drummer like myself, what also stands out for me is the magnificient work of Manu Katché here, one of my favourite drummers (he's done great work for example with Sting as well). Just some super-tasty licks and fills everywhere, so rythmically intricate yet totally in the pocket, and it always feels effortless and never takes away the shine from anyone else. It always just adds to the whole, and his drumming becomes an absolutely necessary part of the performance. Whenever i see Manu Katché on drums, it's always exciting!
Yep. He seems to be feeding something special into is soul. His phrasing is all his own and he glides through songs so dynamically. He never steps on toes and always serves the music with flavor. He's something to behold.
Yes yes! He’s so magnificently cocky. I watched an interview where the bandleader, can’t recall who, asked him almost audition style if Manu thought he could learn and handle the parts. Manu was almost incredulous in the retelling, saying something like “of course I can. That’s why I’m here and not someone else, for heaven’s sake.” And he backs it up. I think most of the verse is just hat and kick right? But then the chorus hits and those glorious off beat tom placements. So gorgeous. And then the subtle little rolls in the climax outro. A master.
@@loadedorygun I head that when Sting was first looking for the right drummer for his solo album, they sat for dinner together, and Sting asked him why he would be the best man for the job. Manu picked up the cutlery from the table and drummed something on the table or whatever was in front of him. It was so good that Sting decided to invite him on the spot to be the drummer.
One thing I really love about this specific performance is that it takes this passionate, intimate song... maintains that feel... but at the same time becomes this community, collaborative vibe.
I've gone to many concerts, especially in the 80s & 90s. Peter Gabriel ALWAYS did the most creative, brilliant shows of anyone. Great music, yes...but also amazing production...a true stage show. I always left in a great mood.
The composition and production, second to none. The lyrics are inspirational and the talent from singing to drums to keys to bass, guitar, violin is amazing. And lets not forget the perfected energy of the dace. One of the greatest song/performances I've ever seen. One cannot be sad after this. Bonita!
I never tire of watching this awe-inspiring performance by Peter Gabriel and this incredible cast of artists backing him up. What's most impressive is how they maintain their vocals while performing these beautiful dance moves throughout the length of the song.
Paula Cole is the female singer's name. She's done gorgeous solo work. Lots of hits back then. She's glorious!😊 ❤ Love this entire performance. The love, the energy, sharing the stage so beautifully. It always makes me feel so good! I'm glad you got to see and hear it. Delightful reaction with some awesome insights. ❤ Thank you!
...and this was only her third or fourth show with Peter Gabriel. She was a music student who'd worked with one of Peter's recoding guys, and when Sinead O'Connor had to leave the tour because of a family emergency, she got a call. She was in Europe 2 days later and rehearsing. The rest, as they say, is history.
Paula Cole released her first solo album, “Harbinger,” just after finishing up this 1994 tour with Peter Gabriel. In fact, she was soon on the road again in 1995, opening for Sarah McLachlan (I saw her in Philadelphia in March). It’s too bad that her label, Imago, folded soon after that album was released; it got virtually no press or airplay. It’s very powerful; her song “I Am So Ordinary” will break your heart. (BTW, Sarah McLachlan got a lot of industry pushback for having a female opening act; traditional wisdom said that a female headliner needed a male opening act. This became her inspiration for starting the Lilith Fair.) On her second album, “This Fire,” she had 2 hit singles: “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and “I Don’t Wanna Wait” (the theme song for the series “Dawson’s Creek). But those aren’t the best songs on the album. “Feelin’ Love” is *the* steamiest song you will ever hear, and Peter Gabriel does a guest duet on “Hush Hush Hush.” She won a couple Grammys, including Best New Artist, and was the first woman nominated for Producer of the Year.
Absolutely right. This whole concert is one of the best I've seen (though sadly I was not there in person). Peter Gabriel is a great musician and Paula Cole was excellent here as the female lead singer. She was standing in for Sinead O'Connor at short notice, yet killed it. You can see great chemistry between everyone on stage, they were all enjoying themselves and that electricity comes across in every number.
I've probably seen this live performance at least 100 times and I always get chills/goosebumps and a tear in my eye. Arguably, one of Peter's best live performances ever recorded. GREAT CHOICE!!
Someone might have mentioned this already but Paula Cole was a last minute stand in for Sinnead O’Conner! She got up there with that already well rehearsed band with I think about four days notice. Here is a quote about it from a bio about her: “Her status is enhanced by the fact that she was brought into that tour at extremely short notice by way of a blunt ‘take it or leave it but I have to know now’ voice message left on her phone by Gabriel, when Sinéad O’Connor abruptly stood down from it, flying thousands of miles through the night to Germany at the drop of a hat and with barely any vocal rehearsal, never mind for the complex staging and dance scenes. She went on to turn in repeated performances that rank with the very best there is.”
Shortly after this tour, Paula Cole had a big selling album called "This Fire". There were some great songs on it. "I don't want to wait- Where have all the cowboys gone- Carmine"
Very nice reaction, by the way the lights in the audience are not part of the show but added later by someone. I saw Paula Cole in the 90's that gal can sing. If you want to hear more of her, "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone" and "I Dont Want to Wait" were her 2 biggest songs.
Hello Beautiful ! I Love Your reaction! Peter Gabriel has so much music to offer. -From a long time ago , until recent. And this song is infectious!!! ..and the core of the band : Manu Katche (drums) Tony Levin (Bass) David Rhodes (guitar) + Paula Cole + Jean Claude (at that time) makes this version AMAZING. Thank You..
If you wanna know more about Peter Gabriel, Emma, look for the progressive rock band Genesis from the begining . He was the lead vocal until 1975. Thanks for reacting to this music. You're the best!
This song and this performance is so special. It never fails to warm my heart. But one thing I also think about every time I watch this video is how fit these musicians -- especially the vocalists -- need to be in. Singing while jumping around on stage and not sounding out of breath, you need to be in really good shape.
Peter Gabriel is a fantastic artist, and this concert - "Secret World Live" - is one of the best I've ever seen. He was one of the pioneers of bringing what is called 'world music' (primarily native African, Middle Eastern and South American influenced sounds) to the USA and UK, and this track reflects some of that sound and energy. Do check out his back catalogue, including songs like "Mercy Street", "Games Without Frontiers", "Solsbury Hill", "Don't Give Up" (duet with Kate Bush), "Blood of Eden" (duet with Sinead O'Connor), "Digging In The Dirt" and some of his more amusing songs like "Sledgehammer", "Big Time" and "Kiss That Frog".
Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest. I love every song on his albums 'So' and 'Steam'. And many of his other works. His voice is unique. You won't be disappointed if you dive deeper into his music.
That tour was amazing - my favorite performance from it was "Shaking the Tree" - something I try to share every year on International Woman's Day, for which the song was written.
Did anyone notice who was playing bass on this tour? Tony Levin of King Crimson. One of the greatest. I'm going to see him in two weeks for the BEAT tour. He'll be playing with Danny Carey of Tool, Steve Vai, and Adrian Belew of King Crimson. They'll be playing 80's King Crimson music. I can't wait
On the Secret World Tour Peter used In Your Eyes as one of the encores. That’s why so many musicians are on stage. Back then he had supporting acts, usually musicians from his world music label Real World.
I should have been more specific. Blood of Eden, Don't Give Up, and Come Talk to Me, from the Peter Gabriel concert Secret World Live featuring the same Paula Cole. Just so special.
Emma be the first reactor on the block, to react to " Shakin The Tree" from the same performance.. you will not be disappointed. ❤..fingers crossed in hopes you continue this epic concert.
Peter is fab, he was lead singer of Genesis before embarking on his solo career. You need to check out "Solsbury Hill", his 1st breakout hit. It has lots and lots of energy to it.
Such a joyous song, such a joyous vibe. The subtle, tasteful quality comes from his work with Genesis. He was the original lead singer for them. Now if you would like something completely different from Mr. Gabriel try 'Sledgehammer' or maybe 'Shock the Monkey'. The award-winning videos are amazing. He has many wonderful songs and released an album just last year called i/o.
Thank you Emma, for another truly wonderful/heartfelt/passionate reaction, and I can I just say I liked your bopping( I hope this is right word, I don't want to cause offence) in your chair; Live is always for the best for both raw emotion and interaction and no covering up any mistakes; Emma always delivers an in-depth, fascinating take using her Musical background to pinpoint various aspects producing the overall sound; This relates to the mood/tone/colour and the rasping vocals and changes in cadence; The Backing Singers were great and enhanced the Song, and everyone on Stage seemed to be having a blast; A fusion of differing styles producing a great whole; So thanks once again Emma for helping to expand the types of music for me to listen too. 🥰🥰💙❤🤟👏👍✌🙆♂👩🎤.
The song is a ton of fun and I really enjoyed your reaction! If you haven't already heard/reacted to it, I would recommend Peter Gabriel's Salisbury Hill. It is one of my favorites and a very moving song.

This is an iconic ballad from the 80’s. From his album So. Featured in the movie Say Anything. It’s beautiful. It was everywhere. The music video was always on MTV. There are so many great performances of this song to choose from. This song hits right at the center of my heart every time.
Wonderful reaction and appraisal, thank you! The girl is Paula Cole, and she joined this tour hurriedly A FEW DAYS before this video was shot, with just ONE REHEARSAL before the tour started! Please react to Don't Give Up from the same concert, where Paula takes Kate Bush's part in the duet but makes it totally her own.
you can hear lots more of the girl singer, Paula Cole, she has several albums released after this concert. From the very first, she did the unconventional with a very strong voice, no doubt what got Peter's attention. Probably one of the best live performances recorded ever. Peter is a magician, and the musicians on this stage are truly world class.
Paul, I couldn't agree more. Every time this video comes on tears come to my eyes. This song/video is so gorgeous.
He certainly knows how to put a band together. The sheer talent on display is next level. Their energy and joyfulness is infectious.
I never get tired of hearing this song and love watching reactions to it. Peter Gabriel is a musical genius who pushed a lot of boundaries. His music is timeless. Thanks for reacting to this.
My favorite of her songs is "Me".
The whole concert is amazing and Paula Cole did a fantastic job!

My favorite concert ever.

This is my all time favorite song. It meant so much to me back in high school and college. and still love it today. Thanks for getting to it.
Fantastic. It's impossible to mistake Peter Gabriel's unique voice for anyone else. All the singers had amazing vocal performances in this video.
I’ve always loved this performance. They did a wonderful job working the audience in the round.

One of my favourite songs. I love almost every live version as much as each other.
Each version has a different group of world musicians, and each one is beautiful and interesting in its own way.
A legendary live performance by Peter Gabriel.
This is the most amazing version of this song. I have this in my personal favorites!! I was so excited to see you react to this!

I love watching reactions to this performance because everyone is amazed when Paula Cole chimes in haha. Great reaction Emma.
Emma is an angel 😍
I think this was one of Peter's greatest adverts for World Music, his passion and fantastically executed.
Peter Gabriel the King. In your company he gets even better . Thank you. Cheers from a finn in Sweden ❤🎉

So Beautiful
This is 1995, the year before , I was lucky enough to see Peter Gabriel at WOODSTOCK 94. He always sounds perfect.
Another later "world music" song of Peter's is "WHEN YOU"RE FALLING".
I saw Peter Gabriel on his So Tour. It was one of the best show I've attended. Emma!!! ❤️🥰😍💘
If you want to see more of the female singer in this same concert, try the duet Blood of Eden.

Damn good aye it, From Dudley uk
As you stopped to comment as the piece was beginning, I had to think, just wait. It becomes completely astounding.
If you’re ever down, play this video and you can’t help but be in a better mood
