Maddy you are so right that this is a song for the world. This live performance is the absolute best ever that I have seen. Peter and his great ensemble of musicians knew this exact performance was going to be special. Incredible that with all the dancing, hopping and movements, Peter not once missed a note or breath. This is the epitome of perfection on an epic scale of proportions.

Of course also the drum solo from Manu Katche, one of the best drummers in history and the iconic Tony Levin, the hole life bassist for Peter Gabriel’s solo career, but also the bassist of one of the most important progressive bands: King Crimson.

This song had a double life. It appeared on his 1986 Album So. Released as a single in the US, it charted No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart and No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Its second life came in 1989, when it was featured in the John Cusack film "Say Anything...," which is iconic for the scene where a heartbroken Lloyd holds a boombox over his head outside his girlfriend's window and plays this song. Peter Gabriale commented on it: "It definitely gave [the song] a second life because now it's so often parodied in comedy shows, and it is one of the modern-day Romeo and Juliet balcony clichés. I've talked to John Cusack about that. We're trapped together in a minuscule moment of contemporary culture."[25] In October 2012, as Gabriel played the first few bars of the song during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, Cusack walked onto the stage, handed him a boombox, and took a bow before quickly walking off again. Cameron Crowe was also present at the concert and later tweeted, "Peter Gabriel and John Cusack are on stage together at the Hollywood Bowl tonight. Won't forget that... ever."

Peter himself said that he wanted this song to be open for interpretation and that it could be a religious song or a love song. So it's not specifically about Jesus, but rather about the love everyone's carrying inside of them, regardless of it being the love of a god or a love for a partner or just the love from human to human. So it's basically just about love. What that love is, that's up to you.

Great vibes. Gabriel is spiritual, but not religious. Though he doesn't hesitate to use religious symbols and themes in his compositions, so you may be correct. But I think it is more general about elevating our spirit. It could also be about a special love in his life. Regardless, joyous vibrations. Peter Gabriel worked hard to bring 'world music' to the West. Very selfless and still performing.

I like your comment that it looked like he had the United Nations on stage. After Genesis split up and he and Phil Collins went separate ways, his first album--which featured Kate Bush as backup singer for this song I'm about to mention, by the by--featgured a great song called "Games without Frontiers," a play on words of Doctors Without Borders, though based on the European gameshow "Jeux Sans Frontieres" that pitted teams from different towns in separate countries against each other, and featured the chorus words, "War without Tears." He has done work with Amnesty International, and as his career progressed, like David Byrne of the Talking Heads he worked increasingly with artists from the Third World, including UN Children Education Fund (UNICEF)'s celebrity ambassador Youssou N'Dour. "In Your Eyes" is my favorite film of his, though, which featured prominently in the Cameron Crowe's coming-of-age teen romance film with John Cusack, "Say Anything."

We can thank folks like Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and the Beatles for exposing Western culture to World Music. Many big musical acts never look beyond their own shores.

The song was about the eyes of actress Rosanna Arquette, whom he was dating at the time. The song Rosanna by Toto was also dedicated to her. She dated a member of that band also. Check out Toto - Rosanna (40 Tours Around The Sun).

Yes, There are rumors that the American actress and film director Rosanna Arquette inspired the song. It’s said that Gabriel wrote it while he and Arquette were romantically involved. However, Gabriel has never confirmed that she was the inspiration for the song.
Being influenced by world music, Peter Gabriel has mentioned in several interviews that the lyrics of “In Your Eyes,” which are inspired by African traditions, can refer to either a romantic relationship between a man and a woman or a divine relationship between an individual and their God

God bless you dear for your interpretation of this song. Even if it were written for his girlfriend as others would see it. "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." Right... Jesus himself even confirms by way of asking "Who is it that you say I am?" In response to those who would ask him who he was. ❤️✌️

So that keyboard player has a "mullet" suit on... I was wondering about a Jesus reference as well. "Eyes of fire..." in Revelation. I sure felt a nice jolt of " the joy of the Lord" on this one! " Unspeakable & full of glory" as the scripture says...
