Good Saturday morning to the lovely Maddy! I'm having a cup of coffee and looking forward to this reaction. Mickey Thomas is an amazing singer who later joined Jefferson Starship, which morphed into just Starship. "Jane","Find Your Way Back","Miracles", " Sara" and "We Built This City" are but a few of their successes. I hope everyone has a great weekend! ✌️☮️🤙🤟👊💯❤
You are spot on, my friend, about Mickey's phenomenal pipes and those great Jefferson Starship/Starship songs, except for one thing. It was another amazing singer, Marty Balin, who sang lead vocals on Miracles. 🙂
@drewmosko7194 No argument with what you have said, my friend. I can see how it would seem that I was inferring that Mickey sang lead on Miracles. That was not my intention, I was simply listing some of the collective band's hits. And, to be fair, Grace Slick sang co-lead with Mickey on most. Thanks for the comment. ✌️☮️
Those big red letters look like The Midnight Special. Elvin plays the red guitar. Mickey Thomas later sang lead for Starship, on "Jane" and many other hits. I saw him live with Jefferson Airplane in the 2000's, and he can sing a razor-line!
Thats Elvin Bishop on Lead Guitar....Mickey Thomas lead vocals...love this version as well as original studio version, the two sounding somewhat different...cheers for the company...
Mickey Thomas on lead vocals hit every note just right, and so did Reni Slais on backing vocals, they could not have been more "on" than this performance 👍😁
A great song written by Elvin Bishop and sung by Mickey Thomas and Reni Slais on the Midnight Special television show.Elvin has been around for a long time playing a great blues guitar and usually singing his songs, but he thought this one was better with Mickey singing it.I saw this performed live in concert in Tulsa,Oklahoma, where Elvin was living at the time..
Elvin with red guitar, Johnny V. (Vernazza) playing white one. Great song, great performances by all, love the studio track too, loved jamming this. ❤️ 😊
Elvin Bishop along with Mike Bloomfield were in the "Paul Butterfield Blues Band" influential in the blues scene from the mid-sixties, they came out of Chicago listening to the blues greats on the south side. Two great guitarists in one band.
I’m here for one of my all-time favorite songs. Vocalist Mickey Thomas, most famously of Starship, has always been one of my top male vocalists. Met him once back in the 80’s. Unassuming, cool dude. And he’s still got his pipes at 74! Still able to sing this in the same key today.
Thanks for playing my request. 😊 I always like to think with this song that the protagonist is reformed after finding the girl he really loves, and leaves his player days behind him. It might be wishful thinking but it‘s always good to be positive! You definitely seemed to enjoy this song more than the Skid Row one I requested last time.
Hey, Maddy. This show is the Midnight Special. During that time, many music acts came on this show in the middle if the night to perform. It was like having a concert in your home every week. And all you needed was a television set. American Bandstand was more of a Top 4o recorded program, like Soul Train. The difference being that Midnight Special was live. Checkout tge Native American group called Redbone. Their hit COME AND GET YOUR LOVE is good. AC/DC plays SIN CITY. Peter Frampton performs his biggest hit DO YOU FEEL LIKE WE DO? And the Bee Gees team up with the great Chuck Berry for some on REELIN' AND ROCKIN'. You would have loved growing up with thus music in the 197o's as I did. The decade went from the dying 6o's, the singer-songwriters, disco, hard rock, soft rock, progressive rock, punk rock, Southern rock, real R&B, New Wave, Soul, and country. We would welcomed you with open arms. Keep going and enjoy the music.
Also when I seen him in San Francisco the Elvin Bishop group they were supposed to open up for Lynyrd Skynyrd and Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't show up because of some hassle with the producer and he played five encores for us
Ha, yes, I noticed you aren't stopping, but I do think that Mickey Thomas and I don't know her name but I've seen this video several times and she's really amazing too, but man that's just a tour de force in singing. But as I said in another comment in here, Jane by Jefferson starship, that's Mickey Thomas once again taking the lead on it like he did in this video and oh my God, it's just so well put together and his singing is just incredible
The song was written by Elvin Bishop on guitar but he felt his voice was too rough for this song, so he asked his backup singer at the time (1975) Mickey Thomas to sing it, and the rest is history. Mickey was married twice and is currently still married to his second wife since 2006.
Being an older man listening to music all my life, I believe in the story of love women hold the upper hand. Most songs written about love especially the blues is the woman breaking the heart of the guy, leaving alone, with a broken dream and a broken heart. So, ladies please be careful we put on a strong image, but our hearts are just as fragile has yours.
Hi Maddy! Before watching this, I watched your reaction to Jefferson Starship's "Miracles", cuz the singer is the same person, Mickey Thomas. The bassist is Elvin Bishop. Although I've known about Jefferson Starship, I never knew about Elvin Bishop till I bought the Guardians Of The Galaxy Soundtrack, which has this song (great soundtrack btw). In the '60s, there was a band called Jefferson Airplane. In the '70s, they changed their name to Jefferson Starship. Mickey joined them in '79. In the '80s, they changed their name to Starship
To double down on some of that, I remember that the Jefferson Airplane stuff was iconic, but I was so young. But it stayed popular for so long, Find Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, etc. And then the first time I ever started having a girlfriend was in the summer between my 9th and 10th grade years, and she was a year older than me, but we played so much cool vinyl at her place in that summertime. And her sister was there, who was in my grade, and her boyfriend who was on the wrestling team, then friends would sometimes aggregate there as well,. We had so much fun and one of the many things that was in heavy rotation were so many songs in a row by Jefferson Starship. So we always kind of thought of the Jefferson Airplane stuff as being fun things from childhood but belonging to a slightly older generation, whereas Jefferson Starship was for us. But, I'm not sure Maddie if you have reacted to the Jefferson Starship song Jane, but it's Mickey Thomas, and it's just a tour de force. I remember I loved it immediately when I heard it on the radio, and I ran out and bought the single initially. And then I figured out how to play the various parts and stuff but dang, I didn't even understand what a good singer he was when I was that young. I knew I liked it and that it was powerful and that it was an amazing thing and it became very popular and all that but, as I got older and played in bands and sing and stuff, I could never get tired of listening to Jane. There's just so much there, and his vocal performance alone to me is just masterful.
Midnight special was big. I remember being at parties when some current, popular group or comedian was going to be on. The music would be turned down, tv turned on and those interested would huddle around the tv and watch! Thanks for that memory Maddy and you all!
One of my first concerts I ever went to was when I was 16 in 1973 and saw Elvin Bishop and Stoneground at Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City, California. Jo Baker sang with Elvin too. Such a great concert. Love Elvin!
This is an interesting band where the name of the band (Elvin Bishop) is the guy playing the guitar. Micky Thomas is the really cool singer. Micky later joined Jefferson Starship where he sang "We Built This City", Sara and others. Micky hales from my home state of Georgia. Maddy, will you marry me?
That was a episode of a show called Midnight Special that would feature popular bands/singers in the 70. This singer became a member of Jefferson Starship.
Mickey Thomas is just singing a song, fabulously I will add, that was written by Elvin Bishop on lead guitar. Not all songs are meant to be taken as actual experiences☺️
Maddoe, there were two music shows fri and sat nites. The Midnight Special on fri. Don Kirschmers rock concert sats at midnight. This looks like the midnight special
And then(lead singer) Mickey Thomas went on to sing for Jefferson Airplane/Starship ..listen to " Jane" by Jefferson Starship, he's rocking those lead vocals HARD
Love some Elvin Bishop. Love this song but this has always been my favorite version. Mickey really lets it rip on the vocals in this performance. He's such a great singer. Elvin is the fella playing the lead guitar. On the majority of his songs he sang the lead vocals and Mickey sang backup. But Elvin has a rough voice with nowhere near the range of Thomas, so it was an excellent choice to let Mickey sing this particular song. If you want to hear Elvin sing check out Strutting My Stuff or Traveling Shoes. Excellent tunes also.
I know I’m late to the party, but I have to say that Sarah Dash and Nona Hendrix more than held their own singing WITH Patti LaBell. To really feel the depths of the group dynamic, try listening to their version of the Cole Porter standard “Ms. Otis Regrets “. You won’t regret it.😊
Hola Maddy; Nuevamente te saludo desde las lejanías tierras australes de Chile 🇨🇱 . Gracias por reaccionar a la música maravillosa que jamás debe morir .un afectuoso saludo todo corazón ♥️
You were asking if this was the show “American Bandstand”. It wasn’t. That was a Sunday? morning show. This is “The Midnight Special” which was either Friday or Saturday night. Late!
Yup, it was Elvin's band, and there was no question that Mickey Thomas was going to get a better gig soon, between his unearthly voice and good looks (especially when you contrast him with the oh, let's just say not-as-handsome Elvin Bishop. (In Charlie Daniels' classic "The South's Gonna Do It Again," about all the great southern rock and blues acts, Charlie says "Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay/He ain't good lookin' but he sure can play.")
6:18 Now, Now, Maddy. I was just like the lyrics until I hit 51, and settled down with ease....But honestly, I started trying to be a 1-woman guy at around 43. It's just that every date had that " He's a player" suspicion vibe going and no matter how hard I tried, couldn't get their trust. I think it was my prior... mmm sleepover count ( 63? please dont' hate me) ..but I pride myself on never lying, so when they'd ask me, what was I supposed to do? Great reaction to a great song! ( And yes, 15 years later Me and Lucy are still blissfully married )
That's amazing how you just NAILED it. Despite your reservations. But you got it exactly - The girl he wrote this song about (Susan) and he were happily married three months later with both families present. They hardly spend a moment apart from one another. And 9 months after their wedding day, they gave birth to their 1st son (of three at this date along with four beautious daughters), who they named Elven. It's almost too good to be true.
One of the finest vocalist ever. Mickey Thomas
I'll second that emotion.
Ahh to be 14 again staying up watching The Midnight Special! The 70’s were the greatest years to be young!!
One of the best live performances I've ever seen.
Good Saturday morning to the lovely Maddy! I'm having a cup of coffee and looking forward to this reaction. Need more angels like you.
Just love when youngins finally hear our music.....................
Ahh...the 70s were so special. Just a feeling of freedom amid economic uncertainty, living day to day listening to all this great music.
Those big red letters look like The Midnight Special. Elvin plays the red guitar. Mickey Thomas later sang lead for Starship, on "Jane" and many other hits. I saw him live with Jefferson Airplane in the 2000's, and he can sing a razor-line!
Always liked this tune. Flashing straight back to high school days in 1975 . Special times. What an era!
Thats Elvin Bishop on Lead Guitar....Mickey Thomas lead vocals...love this version as well as original studio version, the two sounding somewhat different...cheers for the company...
And no, that's not Mrs. Joe Cocker as backing vocalist.
Mickey Thomas on lead vocals hit every note just right, and so did Reni Slais on backing vocals, they could not have been more "on" than this performance 👍😁
Such a beautiful and soulful song!!! Love Elvin Bishop!! Wonderful reaction Hun!! 🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️

This performance was from the Midnight Special.
Dick Clark didn't come out at night.

Only on New Years rocking Eve😂
1 of my all-time favorites. had a friend when we did karaoke he would sing this and blow the roof off, jaws on the floor!!!!
This was always one of my favorite songs
Classic song released 1976 and was used in the first Guardians Of The Galaxy movie, kind of revived it for a bit. Great reaction Maddy!
I always associate it with Summer of Sam (1999), great use of the song.
I seen him perform with starship many times and he still plays at Epcot every year. I believe what a voice still oh my gosh thank you
Thanks for playing my request. 😊 I always like to think with this song that the protagonist is reformed after finding the girl he really loves, and leaves his player days behind him. Mickey Thomas sang lead for a lot of Jefferson Starship songs, but the lead singer for “Miracles” was the late-great Marty Balin.
He now plays with Jefferson Starship! He's the lead vocalist on their song "Jane".
Yes, he hits note I didn't know existed in "Jane" !
Midnight special was big. I remember being at parties when some current, popular group or comedian was going to be on. The music would be turned down, tv turned on and those interested would huddle around the tv and watch! Thanks for that memory Maddy and you all!
Did you notice how great of a singer he is? Not a mention.
The great Mickey Thomas on vocals, Elvin Bishop is the guitar player and band leader
Absolutely one of the most iconic songs to come from the 70s!
Not from "American Bandstand", this was performed on another show called "The Midnight Special." The lead singer had a lot of SOUL!!!
One of my first concerts I ever went to was when I was 16 in 1973 and saw Elvin Bishop and Stoneground at Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City, California. Jo Baker sang with Elvin too. Such a great concert. Love Elvin!
Elvin is the guitarist in case you didn’t know 🎸
She asked if this was American Bandstand, no The Midnight Special
@@dannysoule7977 yep, good ole Wolfman Jack 👍
Not the typical Elvin Bishop style, either. He's usually out struttin' his stuff with little miss slick titty boom.
Oh this will be good! Here we go!
Awesome cool jam yeah, Elvin Bishop on guitar 🎸 Mickey on vocals 🎸🎤🥁👌😎🤘
Guardians of the Galaxy has brought back so many good songs to the spotlight. Peace, Love!!
I've always liked Elvin Bishop's music. Great beer-sippin', porch sittin', watermelon stealin' music!
Elvin Bishop is one of the the true great blues guitarists.
I've known Elvin Bishop since his days with the Butterfield Blues Band in the mid-60s. My goodness what a band.

saw them live at Knotts Berry Farm of all places back in the day =) they rocked. Elvin was dead on guitarist.
The great Mickey Thomas on vocals. Later with Jefferson Starship.
Midnight Special I think. Lots of great talent on this show,
It think this is a song about transformation, from a player to a man humbled by true love.
That was a episode of a show called Midnight Special that would feature popular bands/singers in the 70. This singer became a member of Jefferson Starship.
Oooh
Elvin is the guitarist, Mickey sings and was a backup singer
I've caught Mickey Thomas in concert a couple times about 5-6 years ago and his voice is still perfection.
Mick of Starship?
Yes.
The show was called, "The Midnight Special". Very popular in the 70s.
Great song, love it, love you !!
Mickey Thomas is just singing a song, fabulously I will add, that was written by Elvin Bishop on lead guitar. Not all songs are meant to be taken as actual experiences☺️
Midnight Special, not American Bandstand (AB). AB's live performances often included audience dancing.

Sorry! I meant "Traveling Shoes"!
Elvin Bishop played with Wet Willie and does his own thing too. Great entertainer and guitar player.
This was either from Don Kirschner's Rock Concert or the Midnight Special. Great song
It's just a song, it's not real life! Doesn't mean he really did that. But how did you like his singing, his voice?
A song that coul have been written by man or woman. Sooner or later we find the one we cant live without. ❤
He is the lead singer of Jefferson Starship. Find a song called "Find Your Way Back" and do that one too.
