This performance (ending song of the concert) of 'In Your Eyes' is taken from Peter Gabriel's 'Secret World Live' concert film and features the late, great Papa Wemba. Female voice belongs to amazing Paula Cole. This 1993 live show was filmed across two nights (16 & 17 November) at the Palasport Nuovo in Modena, Italy. The Secret World Live tour itself was in support of Peter’s sixth solo album, US. And guess what? Tomorrow night I'll attend Peter Gabriel's concert in Copenhagen, Denmark. Lucky me! 🙂
You were thinking of Lionel Ritchie's song All Night Long. At the end it gets very upbeat and Jamaican. It might even be the same drum pattern as well. So good ear on ya.
Peter Gabriel did a lot of work towards popularizing "World Music", both by incorporating it into his own songs, and by featuring international artists on his tours. The studio version of this song features Youssou N'Dour, one of the most famous African musicians of all time. Gabriel also founded the WOMAD world music festival. I was lucky enough to see him in 2004 as part of the "Growing Up" tour, and he was accompanied by an artist from Uzbekistan, Sevara Nazarkhan. As well as being the opening act, she joined him for "In Your Eyes" and was his partner for the duet "Don't Give Up". Beautiful. Cheers, Britt. I love your positivity.
Paula Cole, the backing singer, is best known for singing "I Don't Want to Wait", which became the theme tune for Dawson's Creek. Her song "Feelin Love" is fantastic.
Paula replaced Sinead O'Connor in the Secret World tour and lifted things to new heights in my opinion. I still get chills when she hits her top notes.
I’ve seen more than 30 reactions to this magical perfomance, and this reaction is up there among the very best. Love how you let yourself be immersed in the music, emotions and spirutual artistery! It’s in your eyes! ❤ The African language is wollof, spoken in Senegal. Home to Youssou N’Dour, who perfomed this song with Peter in the first tour after the So album release in 1986.
The Secret World Live tour was indeed 'magical.' He was delving into world music at that time and was masterful at it, and Paula was amazing, as well. Every song in this performance is super 🔥
Britt… Peter Gabriel has always been pushing the limits of Experimental/Psychedelic Rock from his time with Genesis ( Live version of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway), his band is comprised of many talented musicians from all over the globe, many from Africa as influenced in this song…You should really check out his song “Biko”, a moving tribute to South African Activist Steven Biko…
This is my all-time favorite love song. The idea of someone saying "I see the doorway of a thousand churches, the resolution of all my fruitless searches in your eyes" I mean-- 🤯🥺😍 Does it get better than that?! PS, the movie scene featuring this song spawned a million teenage boys to hold boom boxes. 😉 IYKYK
The female singer is Paula Cole who had two big hits in the 90s, "I Don't Want To Wait" (which became the Dawson's Creek theme) and "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone". She still performs and also is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour is the one singing in his home dialect near the end. And Papa Wemba and his band are featured. The hourglass-shaped instrument is called a talking drum. Several years after its release "In Your Eyes" became a hit again when it was featured in one of the most iconic film scenes of the 1990s in the movie Say Anything.
I'm 65 years old and only now starting to appreciate Peter Gabriel's creativity and musical inventiveness. I'll been watching this music video, his live concerts and listening to the "So" album over and over. It's always fresh and never gets old. Thanks for reacting to this BrittReacts.
hahahaha I'm 66 & also realizing what an incredible talent he is. I saw him live in 1983 with David Bowie and The Tubes, and did not appreciate what an incredible performance I was seeing. I was there for Bowie (Serious Moonlight Tour).
I love watching you react to this music. I saw Peter first when he came to Seattle in the 70s, and followed him ever since. He has 3 Lps that are considered "World Music" and much is neuvo African that you and some of your fans may like. Many people have failed to find it here in America because they don't know where to look. They are all listed under the name "Afrocelt Soundsystem". My favorite of the 3 is #3. React and spread the joy. I'm impressed with your ability to be one with music and demonstrate your feelings. Keep up the great work and hold on to that friendliness...
It really has that freedom vibe. Peter was the frontman in Genesis from 1969 to 1975 and even then he started doing theatrical things on stage. He left the band in 1975 to do his own material.
Britt, I love watching your reactions. You are beautiful, intelligent, emotional and energetic. You actually get the lyrics of songs. This is one of my favorite videos. I’ve watched it maybe 100 times. Keep up the incredible work young lady. I’m an old lady now, lol, but have been a rock DJ since ‘80. Age is just a number. Our hearts and souls stay young through music. ☮️❤️🎧
The Secret World Tour was a spiritual gathering. Tony Levin as bassist and Manu Katche as your rhytmn section is immense. Amazing! Paula Cole, Papa Wemba all poured their soul's into this performance. It features Youssou N'Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God.
I have seen this concert, for the second time in this tour, the following day, in Southern France and it was as good as shown on this video (extracted from the "Secret World Live"). it was actually the very best concert of the many I have seen. There were 2 stages, one square and one round (masculinity and femininity). The scenography (by Robert Lepage and Peter Gabriel) was exceptional; a phone boot coming up from the ground, a treadmill on which Peter had loaded a giant suitcase containing the members of the band, a tree coming up from the ground and of course the dome,. The choreography is inspired by tribal dances of Western Africa. Papa Wemba and Molokai did the opening and came back for the first encore. PS. I had already seen a concert of Peter on the same tour 3-4 months earlier, in the Netherlands. The talented Joy Askew was on keyboards and backing vocals (so no Paula Cole and no Jean-Claude Naimro), and the supporting artist was Ayub Ogada.
Peter brought this to the WOMAD festival that came to my town and did a set at the end of the show. I got to check off Peter on my bucket list. WOMAD brought so many great acts that you would never get to see on your own. Too many to list. Just incredible, the whole festival!!
There once was a girl in my life. When she laughed or smiled, her eyes would light up, and that moment always put me in such a happy place. Every time i hear or play this song, it takes me back to those happy moments.
I love the entire video of this concert. Still gives me goose bumps when Paula come in on this track. The way she holds that note and then goes up and off. Brilliant. Peter Gabriel always surrounds himself with master musicians. The music is sublime.
The third time Paula Cole performed in this show...one rehearsal and a tour stop in Germany. 4 days before she'd been sitting on her couch in San Francisco. God Touched this Night.
Best Live Performances: Mary J Blige and U2 - “One Love” Queen - Wembley 1986 George Michaels and Elton John - “Don’t Let the Sun Go down on Me” Bruce Springsteen Live in Milan AC/DC Live in Rio Tina Tuner Farewell Tour Tears for Fears - “Everyone Wants to Rule the World” Live On Howard Stern
I knew you'd love this. If I ever don't feel right with the world, I watch this video, and just like you, I can't stop dancing in my chair, and the beat makes me tap on my desk with both hands, and in 10 minutes, the universe is beautiful and back in sync again. Love it!
A perfect reaction to a perfect performance. Peter Gabriel was heavily influenced by African music and promoted many African Musicians. I defy anyone not to start moving to the rhythm!!
This song typifies Peters ability to blend many international influences. That piano riff, that reminded you of Lionel Ritchie "All Night Long", is commonly found in Afro-Cuban music. So there's a cross-pollination of influence there, Africa and the Caribbean. I can't recall which language they change to, but it is an African language. I want to say that it's the same language the guy with the really "cutting" voice was signing in, or at least from the same region. In fact that chant they were doing was the inspirational catalyst for this song, as i loosely translates to the connection that people feel when they see the light in the eyes of someone else.
It's an African language. Not sure if this singer is from the same country as the original singer Youssou N'door who is Senegalese! Been listening to Peter Gabriel since the 1970's. Love him. Love all the African influences and his campaign against Apartheid! ❤
I am fortunate enough to have attended every Peter Gabriel tour since the “security“ album tour, secret world was one of my favorites, the recent tour was amazing! Let’s face it. Every Peter Gabriel performance is amazing.
All Night Long by Lionel Ritchie is the song you were comparing this to, and it is a great song as well. A Peter Gabriel show will leave you with more energy after the show than before. Truly a treasure to the global music scene.
@@G_Demolished I also performed a percussion ensemble that a friend of mine in college arranged for All Night Long, along with an arrangement of Late in the Evening by Paul Simon. I can recognize those 2 songs anywhere.
Peter Gabriel has long been a very inventive musician and performer, he was a founding member of Genesis in 1967 leaving after their album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in 1975, moving Phil Collins from drums and backup vocals to lead vocals and drums. Genesis is another band well worth exploring. Peter has a plethora of live performances, nearly all being some of the best performances and music you will ever experience, the live videos for Growing Up Live, Secret World, the duet Peter Gabriel with Paula Cole HD Don't Give Up, Peter Gabriel - HD Signal to Noise from Growing Up Live (sottotitoli italiano)- a pure wall of music, and his exploration of classical/orchestral music such as his the video for his cover of the David Bowie song Heroes (Live in Verona 2010) about the Berlin Wall -a truly phenomenal track are just a few.
Loved this song ever since it was first released - the original version is on Peter's album 'So' which is magnificent. It's grown over the years in live performances and this recording is wonderful. Enjoyed your reaction.
The 1st Time I saw Peter on his own was at the Bottom Line in NYC, He came out with a totally shaved head, And had a Teddy Bear, Put it on the Piano, And Sang to All the people with Cancer, "Me and My Teddy Bear, We Got No Hair , But We Don"t Care".
Thanks for the memories. This was from the Secret World Tour , which I was fortunate to witness when he came to Los Angeles in 1992. This video was recorded in Italy. You loved it in video, just imagine see it live. He’s coming in October to Los Angeles again
Hey Brit, I was lucky enough to have witnessed this masterpiece of a show in London, Wembley and you’re right more than just a show more like an event, my absolute favourite from this show was when he performed SECRET WORLD and at the end all the band disappeared into a suitcase. The lady with the amazing voice is an artist in her own right her name is Paula Cole and best remembered for the theme song to Dawsons Creak a popular show in the 90s. Paula only toured with Peter for this year the role now is done by his own daughter Melanie.
And underneath it all, Manu Katche the drummer is absolutely killing it. I'm still shocked that Peter let him get away with playing like that on a "pop hit" lol. Bold
Britt, it's always an enjoyable experience to spend an enchanting few minutes sharing well loved music with you. Peter began his professional music path in 1965, this concert was part of his world tour in 1993/1994, All those decades later he is still producing new music and currently touring an, as yet unreleased, new album at the age of 73. Less energetic but no less charismatic, intelligent, searching, inclusive, inventive whilst remaining humble and often self-deprecating with dry humour. He has always known how to put on a spectacular show for the huge arenas, and mixed art, performance and music throughout his career.
Paula Cole is the amazing female vocalist performing with Gabriel. She's a musician and vocalist he actually plucked from the Berkley School of Music to be part of his band. Paula had a successful solo career abd a big single with I Don't Want To Wat
Oh my goodness, I had this concert on VHS when I was a teen. I must have watched it 100 times. I highly recommend the entire concert if you have the time some day.
As you said, Peter Gabriel is an experience. Every member of his band are legends in theusic industry and have successfully careers of theur own, then they come together snd combine all of that on stage. When I heard he was touring again after all of these years I instantlt bought tickets and am counting the Days until he is in Dallas on Oct 19.
One of my favorite music videos of all time! This tour has some great videos. Try Shaking the Tree, either live from this tour, you get more Paula Cole, or the album version.
Gabriel is pretty eclectic, and I think it's great. He's always trying new things, exploring different types of music and sounds, and helps expose his fans to new things. He's got a unique quality to is voice, too. Funny talking about the facade. A lot of older folks reach a point where they don't bother with pretense any more. Sometimes it's funny, but I think that's part of what wisdom is - not wasting time pretending to be someone you're not. That Lionel Ritchie song you're thinking of is "All Night Long".
i spent some time in Toronto, in the summer of '82. went to every concert that was in town. Peter Gabriel was one of them, the 'shock the monkey' tour.
its about JOY. celebrating joy and love. it’s that simple, that pure. all those great thoughts and feelings you’re having? exactly why this tour is a legend. musicians from around the world, crafting and performing one of the most successful and beautiful fusions of western and African pop♥️ >> from same concert you must see Shaking the Tree you’ll love it equally.
The female vocalist is Paula Cole. She was fairly popular at the time of this concert. She faded from the limelight , not sure if she still makes music.
The Secret World Tour travelled and performed in 1993 & 1994. I believe this video is from the concert at Modena, Italy in 1994. With Manu Katche on Drums, Jean Claude Naimro (in the Tux & Shorts), Papa Wemba (RIP - in the red hat), Malakai, Shankar (double electric violin), Tony Levin & David Rhodes (guitars), Paula Cole with the amazing voice, and others. The line up changed throughout the tour. This song was usually an encore along with his song Biko - You should listen to that too - Papa Wemba was Congolese so that was most likely the language he was singing in. Such an uplifting song: Love, I get so lost sometimes Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart When I want to run away, I drive off in my car But whichever way I go I come back to the place you are All my instincts, they return The grand façade, so soon will burn Without a noise, without my pride I reach out from the inside In your eyes The light, the heat (in your eyes) I am complete (in your eyes) I see the doorway (in your eyes) To a thousand churches (in your eyes) The resolution (in your eyes) Of all the fruitless searches (in your eyes) Oh, I see the light and the heat (in your eyes) Oh, I wanna be that complete (in your eyes) I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes Love, I don't like to see so much pain So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away I get so tired working so hard for our survival I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive And all my instincts they return And the grand façade, so soon will burn Without a noise, without my pride I reach out from the inside In your eyes (your eyes, your eyes) In your eyes In your eyes The light, the heat (in your eyes) I am complete (in your eyes) I see the doorway To a thousand churches (in your eyes) The resolution (in your eyes) Of all the fruitless searches Oh, I see the light and the heat (in your eyes) Oh, I wanna be that complete (in your eyes) I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes In your eyes In your eyes In your eyes Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir
From the same concert I highly recommend the song that you don't hear much about but is amazing in my opinion. Check out Shaking the Tree! It just has a vibe! It's actually about women taking charge against the male establishment, from what I have learned. Also very tribal and African influence. The performance is also very entertaining with him and the whole band.
I love this performance so much! Back in the DAY day, my gf at the time put this song on a mix tape she made for me, (the studio version) and I thought it was the most amazing song ever, and that she felt that way about me? Swoon and a half.
saw this live in orlando in 1992 or 1993..he did something theatrical on every single song during the concert. had a square and circular stage in the center with a conveyer belt/track connecting them. magical concert, nothing i have seen has ever measured up to that experience.
The African language used in the song is Wolof which is one of the native languages of Senegal and Gambia.
Lingala is sang by Papa Wemba the congolese
This performance (ending song of the concert) of 'In Your Eyes' is taken from Peter Gabriel's 'Secret World Live' concert film and features the late, great Papa Wemba.

@@Fwhole I will. Hyped already. My third PG concert.
::gasp:: So lucky!!!
This is a perennial RUclips reactor favourite, and rightly so. It speaks to a world we wish we inhabited rather than the one we find ourselves in.
VERY well said! Symbolic of what we COULD be as a people...
I second that...very well said.
It’s a love song about his wife. But it has a duel meaning. It was written that way on purpose. But the primary is about his wife.

Feelin Love is one of the raunchiest and most awesome songs!
@@calipidgious It really, really is.
Her first album, “Harbinger,” is ridiculously underrated. And Peter Gabriel shows up on her song “Hush, Hush, Hush.”

This entire concert is absolutely amazing. Thanks for the reaction.
The girl hitting the high note at the beginning is Paula Cole, who has released several records of her own.

Bold
Peter was a musician’s musician. He wasn’t about cookie cutter parts.
"In your eyes, I see the doorway to a thousand churches; the resolution of all the fruitless searches."
That's heavy shit, right there.
One of my favorite music videos of all time! This tour has some great videos. Try Shaking the Tree, either live from this tour, you get more Paula Cole, or the album version.
One of my favorite recorded live performances EVER! Thanks for doing this one!
Peter Gabriel was one of them, the 'shock the monkey' tour.
its about JOY.
celebrating joy and love.
it’s that simple, that pure.
all those great thoughts and feelings you’re having? exactly why this tour is a legend.
musicians from around the world, crafting and performing one of the most successful and beautiful fusions of western and African pop♥️
>> from same concert you must see Shaking the Tree you’ll love it equally.
"Shake the Tree' from the same concert is a quite wonderful performance! Take time time to enjoy the complete concert for yourself!!!
This performance is just joy and love broadcasting to the universe.
The female vocalist is Paula Cole. She was fairly popular at the time of this concert. She faded from the limelight , not sure if she still makes music.
My favorite male artist...his live shows are always great!!!!
Such an uplifting song:
Love, I get so lost sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away, I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are
All my instincts, they return
The grand façade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light, the heat (in your eyes)
I am complete (in your eyes)
I see the doorway (in your eyes)
To a thousand churches (in your eyes)
The resolution (in your eyes)
Of all the fruitless searches (in your eyes)
Oh, I see the light and the heat (in your eyes)
Oh, I wanna be that complete (in your eyes)
I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
And all my instincts they return
And the grand façade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes (your eyes, your eyes)
In your eyes
In your eyes
The light, the heat (in your eyes)
I am complete (in your eyes)
I see the doorway
To a thousand churches (in your eyes)
The resolution (in your eyes)
Of all the fruitless searches
Oh, I see the light and the heat (in your eyes)
Oh, I wanna be that complete (in your eyes)
I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
In your eyes
In your eyes
In your eyes

Very Caribbean sound. Great reaction / review. (As always)💯
As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
A great song and tremendous performance.
Such a great song. Such a great collaboration.
This song was such an anthem of the 80s. Peter Gabriel is an icon.
Lionel Ritchie - All night long. I got ya.
I think this is my favorite song and my favorite performance of it
My favorite is red rain. Played the drums to this soooo many times. Great piece.
The bass voice and violinist is Lakshmi Shankar. He commissioned the building of a double-necked violin that he is playing here.
One of his many masterpieces
One of my favorite songs from my youth.
One of the most magical performances...
San Jacinto, Family Snapshot, Games Without Frontiers. My favorite Pete Gabriel songs.
This song is magic. I call it a joyous celebration. I wrote that before you called it a jubilee. Pretty much the same impression...
on of those songs that could go on for ever......
The concert is to be seen, heard and felt
There is a version of Solsbury Hill where he rides a bike on stage - you would enjoy it
❤..... Peter Gabriel is so so Beautifully Fantastic Soothing to the Core🥂🍾 thank you BriTT 😉♥️🇿🇦
Youssou N'Dour collaborated with Peter Gabriel writing the lyrics in the Senegalese Wolof language. They also wrote "Shaking the Tree" together.
